Consider the obvious functor from the unbounded derived category of all finitely generated modules over a left noetherian ring $R$ to the unbounded derived category of all modules. We answer the natural question whether this functor defines an equivalence onto the full subcategory of complexes with finitely generated cohomology modules in two special cases. If $R$ is a quasi-Frobenius ring of infinite global dimension, then this functor is not full. If $R$ has finite left global dimension, this functor is an equivalence. We also prove variants of the latter assertion for left coherent rings, for noetherian schemes and for locally noetherian Grothendieck categories.
In this short note we show that under very mild conditions on a functor between exact categories $F:\mathcal{D}\rightarrow\mathcal{E}$ it is possible to derive $F$ at the level of unbounded complexes. We also give applications to deriving functors between $Pro$- and $Ind$- categories.
There exists a canonical functor from the category of fibrant objects of a model category modulo cylinder homotopy to its homotopy category. We show that this functor is faithful under certain conditions, but not in general.
We prove that the notion of Drinfeld center defines a functor from the category of indecomposable multi-tensor categories with morphisms given by bimodules to that of braided tensor categories with morphisms given by monoidal bimodules. Moreover, we apply some ideas from the physics of topological orders to prove that the center functor restricted to indecomposable multi-fusion categories (with additional conditions on the target category) is fully faithful. As byproducts, we provide new proofs to some important known results in fusion categories. In physics, this fully faithful functor gives …
In this work, inspired by some physical intuitions, we define a series of symmetry enriched categories to describe symmetry enriched topological (SET) orders, and define a new tensor product, called the relative tensor product, which describes the stacking of 2+1D SET orders. Then we choose and modify the domain and codomain categories, and manage to make the Drinfeld center a fully faithful symmetric monoidal functor. It turns out that this functor, named the symmetry enriched center functor, provides a precise and rather complete mathematical formulation of the boundary-bulk relation of symm…
Departing from a suitable categorical concept of topogenous orders defined relative to the bifibration of subobjects, this note introduces and studies topogenous orders on faithful and amnestic functors. Amongst other things, it is shown that this approach captures the formal closure operators and leads to the introduction of formal interior operators. Turning to special morphisms relative to the orders introduced, we show that a morphism is strict relative to an order if the order preserves codomains of its cocartesian liftings while a morphism is final if the order reflects domains of its ca…
We study full exact functors between triangulated categories. With some hypotheses on the source category we prove that it admits an orthogonal decomposition into two pieces such that the functor restricted to one of them is zero while the restriction to the other is faithful. In particular, if the source category is either the category of perfect complexes or the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a noetherian scheme supported on a closed connected subscheme, then any non-trivial exact full functor is faithful as well. Finally we show that removing the noetherian hypothesis this …
The notion of geometric nerve of a 2-category (Street, \cite{refstreet}) provides a full and faithful functor if regarded as defined on the category of 2-categories and lax 2-functors. Furthermore, lax 2-natural transformations between lax 2-functors give rise to homotopies between the corresponding simplicial maps. These facts allow us to prove a representation theorem of the general non abelian cohomology of groupoids (classifying non abelian extensions of groupoids) by means of homotopy classes of simplicial maps.
A notion of central importance in categorical topology is that of topological functor. A faithful functor E -> B is called topological if it admits cartesian liftings of all (possibly large) families of arrows; the basic example is the forgetful functor Top -> Set. A topological functor E -> 1 is the same thing as a (large) complete preorder, and the general topological functor E -> B is intuitively thought of as a complete preorder relative to B. We make this intuition precise by considering an enrichment base Q_B such that Q_B-enriched categories are faithful functors into B, and show that, …
We study the transfer of (dual) relative CS-Rickart properties via functors between abelian categories. We consider fully faithful functors as well as adjoint pairs of functors. We give several applications to Grothendieck categories and, in particular, to (graded) module and comodule categories.
We describe a category of undirected graphs which comes equipped with a faithful functor into the category of (colored) modular operads. The associated singular functor from modular operads to presheaves is fully faithful, and its essential image can be classified by a Segal condition. This theorem can be used to recover a related statement, due to André Joyal and Joachim Kock, concerning a larger category of undirected graphs whose functor to modular operads is not just faithful but also full.
We define unbounded twisted complexes and bicomplexes generalising the notion of a (bounded) twisted complex over a DG category [BK90]. These need to be considered relative to another DG category $B$ admitting countable direct sums and shifts. The resulting DG category of unbounded twisted complexes has a fully faithful convolution functor into Mod-$B$ which filters through $B$ if the latter admits change of differential. As an application, we rewrite definitions of $A_{\infty}$-structures in terms of twisted complexes to make them work in an arbitrary monoidal DG category or a DG bicategory.
In this paper, we first construct some complete cotorson pairs on the category $\mathbb{C}_N(\mathcal{G})$ of unbounded $N$-complexes of Grothendieck category $\mathcal{G}$, from two given cotorsion pairs in $\mathcal{G}$. Next as an application, we focus on particular homotopy categories and the existence of adjoint functors between them. These are an $N$-complex version of the results were shown by Neeman in the category of ordinary complexes.
We show that each rigid monoidal category A over a field defines a family of universal tensor categories, which together classify all faithful monoidal functors from A to tensor categories. Each of the universal tensor categories classifies monoidal functors of a given 'homological kernel' and can be realised as a sheaf category, not necessarily on A. This yields a theory of 'local abelian envelope' which completes the notion of monoidal abelian envelopes.
We give a bicategorical version of the main result of A. Masuoka ({Corings and invertible bimodules,} {\em Tsukuba J. Math.} \textbf{13} (1989), 353--362) which proposes a non-commutative version of the fact that for a faithfully flat extension of commutative rings $R \subseteq S$, the relative Picard group $Pic(S/R)$ is isomorphic to the Amitsur 1--cohomology group $H^1(S/R,U)$ with coefficients in the units functor $U$.
We prove that any faithful Frobenius functor between abelian categories preserves the Gorenstein projective dimension of objects. Consequently, it preserves and reflects Gorenstein projective objects. We give conditions on when a Frobenius functor preserves the stable categories of Gorenstein projective objects, the singularity categories and the Gorenstein defect categories, respectively. In the appendix, we give a direct proof of the following known result: for an abelian category with enough projectives and injectives, its global Gorenstein projective dimension coincides with its global Gor…
There are many category-theoretic notions of algebraic theory, including Lawvere theories, monads, PROPs and operads. The first central notion of this thesis is a common generalisation of these, which we call a proto-theory. In order to define models of a proto-theory in a category, we need a way of relating the arities of the proto-theory with the objects of the category. This leads to our second central notion, that of an interpretation of arities, or aritation for short. We show that every aritation gives rise to a semantics functor sending proto-theories to models. In fact this functor alw…
We consider essentially small rigid tensor categories (not necessarily abelian) which have a faithful tensor functor to a category of super vector spaces over a field of characteristic 0. It is shown how to construct for each such tensor category a super Tannakian hull, which is a universal faithful tensor functor to a super Tannakian category over a field of characteristic 0. The construction is analogous to the passage from an integral domain to its field of fractions.
We construct a fully faithful functor from the category of graphs to the category of fields. Using this functor, we resolve a longstanding open problem in computable model theory, by showing that for every nontrivial countable structure S, there exists a countable field F with the same essential computable-model-theoretic properties as S. Along the way, we develop a new "computable category theory," and prove that our functor and its partially-defined inverse (restricted to the categories of countable graphs and countable fields) are computable functors.
In this paper we introduce and investigate the notion of semiseparable functor. One of its first features is that it allows a novel description of separable and naturally full functors in terms of faithful and full functors, respectively. To any semiseparable functor we attach an invariant, given by an idempotent natural transformation, which controls when the functor is separable and yields a characterization of separable functors in terms of (dual) Maschke and conservative functors. We prove that any semiseparable functor admits a canonical factorization as a naturally full functor followed …
In this paper we call generalized lax epimorphism a functor defined on a ring with several objects, with values in an abelian AB5 category, for which the associated restriction functor is fully faithful. We characterize such a functor with the help of a conditioned right cancellation of another, constructed in a canonical way from the initial one. As consequences we deduce a characterization of functors inducing an abelian localization and also a necessary and sufficient condition for a morphism of rings with several objects to induce an equivalence at the level of two localizations of the res…
Owing to the difference in $K$-theory, an example by Dugger and Shipley implies that the equivalence of stable categories of Gorenstein projective modules should not be a Quillen equivalence. We give a sufficient and necessary condition for the Frobenius pair of faithful functors between two abelian categories to be a Quillen equivalence, which is also equivalent to that the Frobenius functors induce mutually inverse equivalences between stable categories of Gorenstein projective objects. We show that the category of Gorenstein projective objects is a Waldhausen category, then Gorenstein $K$-g…
We propose a natural definition of a category of matrix factorizations for nonaffine Landau-Ginzburg models. For any LG-model we construct a fully faithful functor from the category of matrix factorizations defined in this way to the triangulated category of singularities of the corresponding fiber. We also show that this functor is an equivalence if the total space of the LG-model is smooth.
The notion of a categorical quotient can be generalized since its standard categorical concept does not recover the expected quotients in certain categories. We present a more general formulation in the form of $\mathcal{F}$-quotients in a category $\mathbf{C}$, which are relativized to a faithful functor $\mathcal{F}\colon \mathbf{C} \to \mathbf{D}$. The isomorphism theorems of universal algebras generalize to this setting, and we additionally find important links between $\mathcal{F}$-quotients in the concrete category of first-order structures, and quotients defined for model-theoretic equi…
In this paper we establish an equivalence between the category of graded D-branes of type B in Landau-Ginzburg models with homogeneous superpotential W and the triangulated category of singularities of the fiber of W over zero. The main result is a theorem that shows that the graded triangulated category of singularities of the cone over a projective variety is connected via a fully faithful functor to the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on the base of the cone. This implies that the category of graded D-branes of type B in Landau-Ginzburg models with homogeneous superpotential W …
Let $U:\mathcal{C}\rightarrow\mathcal{D}$ be a strong monoidal functor between abelian monoidal categories admitting a right adjoint $R$, such that $R$ is exact, faithful and the adjunction $U\dashv R$ is coHopf. Building on the work of Balan, we show that $R$ is separable (resp., special) Frobenius monoidal if and only if $R(\mathbb{1}_{\mathcal{D}})$ is a separable (resp., special) Frobenius algebra in $\mathcal{C}$. If further, $\mathcal{C},\mathcal{D}$ are pivotal (resp., ribbon) categories and $U$ is a pivotal (resp., braided pivotal) functor, then $R$ is a pivotal (resp., ribbon) functor…
We propose definitions of regular and exact (virtual) double categories, proving a number of results which parallel many basic results in the theory of regular and exact categories. We show that any regular virtual double category admits a factorization system which generalizes the factorization of a functor between categories into a bijective-on-objects functor followed by a fully-faithful functor. Finally, we show that our definition of exact double category is equivalent to an axiom proposed by Wood, and very closely related to the "tight Kleisli objects" studied by Garner and Shulman.
The structure of the category of matroids and strong maps is investigated: it has coproducts and equalizers, but not products or coequalizers; there are functors from the categories of graphs and vector spaces, the latter being faithful; there is a functor to the category of geometric lattices, that is nearly full; there are various adjunctions and free constructions on subcategories, inducing a simplification monad; there are two orthogonal factorization systems; some, but not many, combinatorial constructions from matroid theory are functorial.
Making use of Freyd's free abelian category on a preadditive category we show that if $T:D\rightarrow \mathcal{A}$ is a representation of a quiver $D$ in an abelian category $\mathcal{A}$ then there is an abelian category $\mathcal{A} (T)$, a faithful exact functor $F_T: \mathcal{A} (T) \to \mathcal{A}$ and an induced representation $\tilde T: D \to \mathcal{A} (T)$ such that $F_T\tilde T= T$ universally. We then can show that $\mathbb{T}$-motives as well as Nori's motives are given by a certain category of functors on definable categories.
Premetrics and premetrisable spaces have been long studied and their topological interrelationships are well-understood. Consider the category ${\bf Pre}$ of premetric spaces and $ε$-$δ$ continuous functions as morphisms. The absence of the triangle inequality implies that the faithful functor ${\bf Pre} \to {\bf Top}$ - where a premetric space is sent to the topological space it generates - is not full. Moreover, the sequential nature of topological spaces generated from objects in ${\bf Pre}$ indicates that this functor is not surjective on objects either. Developed from work by Flagg and We…
We present a novel approach to the problem of integrating homotopy Lie algebras by representing the Maurer-Cartan space functor with a universal cosimplicial object. This recovers Getzler's original functor but allows us to prove the existence of additional, previously unknown, structures and properties. Namely, we introduce a well-behaved left adjoint functor, we establish functoriality with respect to infinity-morphisms, and we construct a coherent hierarchy of higher Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formulas. Thanks to these tools, we are able to establish the most important results of higher Lie t…
We define notions of regularity and (Barr-)exactness for 2-categories. In fact, we define three notions of regularity and exactness, each based on one of the three canonical ways of factorising a functor in Cat: as (surjective on objects, injective on objects and fully faithful), as (bijective on objects, fully faithful), and as (bijective on objects and full, faithful). The correctness of our notions is justified using the theory of lex colimits introduced by Lack and the second author. Along the way, we develop an abstract theory of regularity and exactness relative to a kernel--quotient fac…
We consider the homotopy category of complexes of projective modules over a Noetherian ring. Truncation at degree zero induces a fully faithful triangle functor from the totally acyclic complexes to the stable derived category. We show that if the ring is either Artin or commutative Noetherian local, then the functor is dense if and only if the ring is Gorenstein. Motivated by this, we define the Gorenstein defect category of the ring, a category which in some sense measures how far the ring is from being Gorenstein.
We show that there exists a canonical functor from the category of strict \infty-groupoids to the category of Grothendieck \infty-groupoids and that this functor is fully faithful. As a main ingredient, we prove that free strict \infty-groupoids on a globular pasting scheme are weakly contractible.
We construct a functor from the category of graphs to the category of groups which is faithful and "almost" full, in the sense that it induces bijections of the Hom sets up to trivial homomorphisms and conjugation in the category of groups. We provide several applications of this construction to localizations (i.e. idempotent functors) in the category of groups and the homotopy category.
It is known that monoidal functors between internal groupoids in the category Grp of groups constitute the bicategory of fractions of the 2-category Grpd(Grp) of internal groupoids, internal functors and internal natural transformations in Grp with respect to weak equivalences. Monoidal functors can be described equivalently by a kind of weak morphisms introduced by B. Noohi under the name of "butter ies". In order to internalize monoidal functors in a wide context, we introduce the notion of internal butterflies between internal crossed modules in a semi-abelian category C, and we show that t…
The goal of the paper is to establish and to investigate a fully faithful embedding of the category of group operads into that of crossed interval groups. For this, we introduce a monoidal structure on the slice of the category of operads over the operad of symmetric groups. Comparing with the monoidal structure on the category of interval sets discussed in the author's previous work, we obtain a monoidal functor connecting these two categories. It will be shown that this actually induces a fully faithful functor on monoid objects and does not change the underlying sets, so we obtain a require…
In this paper, we present new concepts of Ann-categories, Ann-functors, and a transmission of the structure of categories based on Ann-equivalences. We build Ann-category of Pic-funtors and prove that each Ann-category can be faithfully embedded into an almost strictly Ann-category.
Over a field of characteristic zero, we show that the forgetful functor from the homotopy category of commutative dg algebras to the homotopy category of dg associative algebras is faithful. In fact, the induced map of derived mapping spaces gives an injection on all homotopy groups at any basepoint. We prove similar results both for unital and non-unital algebras, and also Koszul dually for the universal enveloping algebra functor from dg Lie algebras to dg associative algebras. An important ingredient is a natural model for these derived mapping spaces as Maurer-Cartan spaces of complete fil…
We describe a fully faithful embedding of the category of (reflexive) globular sets into the category of counital cosymmetric $R$-coalgebras when $R$ is an integral domain. This embedding is a lift of the usual functor of $R$-chains and the extra structure consists of a derived form of cup coproduct. Additionally, we construct a functor from group-like counital cosymmetric \mbox{$R$-coalgebras} to $ω$-categories and use it to connect two fundamental constructions associated to oriented simplices: Steenrod's cup-$i$ coproducts and Street's orientals. The first defines the square operations in t…
In this paper, we give precise mathematical form to the idea of a structure whose data and axioms are faithfully represented by a graphical calculus; some prominent examples are operads, polycategories, properads, and PROPs. Building on the established presentation of such structures as algebras for monads on presheaf categories, we describe a characteristic property of the associated monads---the shapeliness of the title---which says that "any two operations of the same shape agree". An important part of this work is the study of analytic functors between presheaf categories, which are a comm…
