The notion of geometric nerve of a 2-category (Street, \cite{refstreet}) provides a full and faithful functor if regarded as defined on the category of 2-categories and lax 2-functors. Furthermore, lax 2-natural transformations between lax 2-functors give rise to homotopies between the corresponding simplicial maps. These facts allow us to prove a representation theorem of the general non abelian cohomology of groupoids (classifying non abelian extensions of groupoids) by means of homotopy classes of simplicial maps.
We show that the nerve of a strict omega-category can be described algebraically as a simplicial set with additional operations subject to certain identities. The resulting structures are called sets with complicial identities. We also construct an equivalence between the categories of strict omega-categories and of sets with complical identities.
It is known that strict omega-categories are equivalent through the nerve functor to complicial sets and to sets with complicial identities. It follows that complicial sets are equivalent to sets with complicial identities. We discuss these equivalences. In particular we give a conceptual proof that the nerves of omega-categories are complicial sets, and a direct proof that complicial sets are sets with complicial identities.
It is shown that the cubical nerve of a strict omega-category is a sequence of sets with cubical face operations and distinguished subclasses of thin elements satisfying certain thin filler conditions. It is also shown that a sequence of this type is the cubical nerve of a strict omega-category unique up to isomorphism; the cubical nerve functor is therefore an equivalence of categories. The sequences of sets involved are in effect the analogues of cubical T-complexes appropriate for strict omega-categories. Degeneracies are not required in the definition of these sequences, but can in fact be…
We show that the homotopy theory of strict 2-categories embeds in that of $(\infty,2)$-categories in the form of 2-precomplicial sets. More precisely, we construct a nerve-categorification adjunction that is a Quillen pair between Lack's model structure for 2-categories and Riehl-Verity's model structure for 2-complicial sets. Furthermore, we show that Lack's model structure is transferred along this nerve and that the nerve is homotopically fully faithful.
Many monoidal-type objects are known to be classified by maps from the Catalan simplicial set $\mathbb{C}$ to various nerves of categories and higher categories. There are, for example, three different nerves of the 2-category of categories $\mathsf{Cat}$ with the property that maps from $\mathbb{C}$ into them are in one to one correspondence with strict monoidal, monoidal, and skew monoidal categories. In this last case, the classification result can be understood as justifying the definition of skew monoidal categories intrinsically in terms of the structure of $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper, w…
We prove a certain proposition which states a relationship between coverings of small categories and nerves. As its application, we prove that for a covering $\map{P}{E}{B}$ of finite categories, the zeta function of $E$ is the zeta function of $B$ to the number of sheet of $P$. Moreover, we prove the formula $χ(E)=χ(F)χ(B)$ for Euler characteristic of categories and coverings.
For most models of $(\infty,2)$-categories an embedding of the $\infty$-category of 2-categories into that of $(\infty,2)$-categories has been constructed in the form of a nerve construction of some flavor. We prove that all those nerve embeddings induce equivalent functors, modulo change of model. We also show that all the nerve embeddings realize the $\infty$-category of 2-categories as the sub-$\infty$-category of $(\infty,2)$-categories that are local with respect to a certain class of maps.
We give an explicit and purely combinatorial description of the Duskin nerve of any (r+1)-point suspension 2-category, and in particular of any 2-category belonging to Joyal's cell category Theta_2.
We describe a category of undirected graphs which comes equipped with a faithful functor into the category of (colored) modular operads. The associated singular functor from modular operads to presheaves is fully faithful, and its essential image can be classified by a Segal condition. This theorem can be used to recover a related statement, due to André Joyal and Joachim Kock, concerning a larger category of undirected graphs whose functor to modular operads is not just faithful but also full.
Thomason's Homotopy Colimit Theorem has been extended to bicategories and this extension can be adapted, through the delooping principle, to a corresponding theorem for diagrams of monoidal categories. In this version, we show that the homotopy type of the diagram can be also represented by a genuine simplicial set nerve associated with it. This suggests the study of a homotopy colimit theorem, for diagrams $\b$ of braided monoidal categories, by means of a simplicial set {\em nerve of the diagram}. We prove that it is weak homotopy equivalent to the homotopy colimit of the diagram, of simplic…
This paper continues the development of a simplicial theory of weak omega-categories, by studying categories which are enriched in weak complicial sets. These complicial Gray-categories generalise both the Kan complex enriched categories of homotopy theory and the Gray-categories of weak 3-category theory. We derive a simplicial nerve construction, which is closely related to Cordier and Porter's homotopy coherent nerve, and show that this faithfully represents complicial Gray-categories as weak complicial sets. The category of weak complicial sets may itself be canonically enriched to a compl…
In this note we consider partial model categories, by which we mean relative categories that satisfy a weakened version of the model category axioms involving only the weak equivalences. More precisely, a partial model category will be a relative category that has the two out of six property and admits a 3-arrow calculus. We then show that Charles Rezk's result that the simplicial space obtained from a simplicial model category by taking a Reedy fibrant replacement of its simplicial nerve is a complete Segal space also holds for these partial model categories. We also note that conversely ever…
In this article, we develop a general technique for gluing subcategories of $\infty$-categories. We obtain categorical equivalences between simplicial sets associated to certain multisimplicial sets. Such equivalences can be used to construct functors in different contexts. One of our results generalizes Deligne's gluing theory developed in the construction of the extraordinary pushforward operation in étale cohomology of schemes. Our results are applied in subsequent articles to construct Grothendieck's six operations in étale cohomology of Artin stacks.
We functorially associate to each relative $\infty$-category $(R,W)$ a simplicial space $N^R_\infty(R,W)$, called its Rezk nerve (a straightforward generalization of Rezk's "classification diagram" construction for relative categories). We prove the following local and global universal properties of this construction: (i) that the complete Segal space generated by the Rezk nerve $N^R_\infty(R,W)$ is precisely the one corresponding to the localization $R[[W^{-1}]]$; and (ii) that the Rezk nerve functor defines an equivalence $RelCat_\infty [[ W_{BK}^{-1} ]] \xrightarrow{\sim} Cat_\infty$ from a…
The subject of this paper is a nerve construction for bicategories introduced by Leinster, which defines a fully faithful functor from the category of bicategories and normal pseudofunctors to the category of presheaves over Joyal's category $Θ_2$. We prove that the nerve of a bicategory is a $2$-quasi-category (a model for $(\infty,2)$-categories due to Ara), and moreover that the nerve functor restricts to the right part of a Quillen equivalence between Lack's model structure for bicategories and a Bousfield localisation of Ara's model structure for $2$-quasi-categories. We deduce that Lack'…
We describe a Cat-valued nerve of bicategories, which associates to every bicategory a simplicial object in Cat, called the 2-nerve. We define a 2-category NHom whose objects are bicategories and whose 1-cells are normal homomorphisms of bicategories, in such a way that the 2-nerve construction becomes a full embedding of NHom in the 2-category of simplicial objects in Cat. This embedding has a left biadjoint, and we characterize its image. The 2-nerve of a bicategory is always a weak 2-category in the sense of Tamsamani, and we show that NHom is biequivalent to a certain 2-category whose obje…
In this paper we introduce a functor, called the simplicial nerve of an A-infinity category, defined on the category of (small) A-infinity categories with values in simplicial sets. We prove that the simplicial nerve of any A-infinity category is an infinity category. This construction extends functorially the nerve construction for differential graded categories proposed by J.Lurie in Higher Algebra. We prove that if a differential graded category is pretriangulated in the sense of A.I.Bondal-M.Kapranov, then its nerve is a stable infinity category in the sense of J.Lurie.
Our aim is to compare three nerve functors for strict $n$-categories: the Street nerve, the cellular nerve and the multi-simplicial nerve. We show that these three functors are equivalent in some appropriate sense. In particular, the classes of $n$-categorical weak equivalences that they define coincide: they are the Thomason equivalences. We give two applications of this result: the first one states that a Dyer-Kan-type equivalence for Thomason equivalences is a Thomason equivalence; the second one, fundamental, is the stability of the class of Thomason equivalences under the dualities of the…
The basic data for a skew-monoidal category are the same as for a monoidal category, except that the constraint morphisms are no longer required to be invertible. The constraints are given a specific orientation and satisfy Mac Lane's five axioms. Whilst recent applications justify the use of skew-monoidal structure, they do not give an intrinsic justification for the form the structure takes (the orientation of the constraints and the axioms that they satisfy). This paper provides a perspective on skew-monoidal structure which, amongst other things, makes it quite apparent why this particular…
The most natural notion of a simplicial nerve for a (weak) bicategory was given by Duskin, who showed that a simplicial set is isomorphic to the nerve of a $(2,1)$-category (i.e. a bicategory with invertible $2$-morphisms) if and only if it is a quasicategory which has unique fillers for inner horns of dimension $3$ and greater. Using Duskin's technique, we show how his nerve applies to $(2,1)$-category functors, making it a fully faithful inclusion of $(2,1)$-categories into simplicial sets. Then we consider analogues of this extension of Duskin's result for several different two-dimensional …
In the sixties, Grothendieck developed the theory of pro-objects over a category. The fundamental property of the category $Pro(C)$ is that there is an embedding $C \stackrel{c}{\rightarrow} Pro(C)$, $Pro(C)$ is closed under small cofiltered limits, and these are free in the sense that for any category $E$ closed under small cofiltered limits, pre-composition with $c$ determines an equivalence of categories $Cat(Pro(C),E)_+ \simeq Cat(C,E)$, (the $+$ indicates the full subcategory of the functors that preserve cofiltered limits). In this work we develop a 2-dimensional pro-object theory. Given…
We introduce, for \(\C\) a regular Cartesian Reedy category a model category whose fibrant objects are an analogue of quasicategories enriched in simplicial presheaves on \(C\). We then develop a coherent realization and nerve for this model structure and demonstrate using an enriched version of the necklaces of Dugger and Spivak that our model category is Quillen-equivalent to the category of categories enriched in simplicial presheaves on \(\C\). We then show that for any Cartesian-closed left-Bousfield localization of the category of simplicial presheaves on \(\C\), the coherent nerve and r…
Thick simplices are the nerves of the contractible groupoids obtained by inverting the arrows in the categories [n]. Using explicit expansions of simplicial subsets of the thick simplices, we present a new approach to results of Rezk and of Joyal and Tierney on quasi-categories and their associated Kan complexes of quasi-invertible morphisms.
The nerve of a strict omega-category is a simplicial set with additional structure, making it into a so-called complicial set, and strict omega-categories are in fact equivalent to complicial sets. The nerve functor is represented by a sequence of strict omega-categories, called orientals, which are associated to simplexes. In this paper we give a detailed algebraic description of the morphisms between orientals. The aim is to describe complicial sets algebraically, by operators and equational axioms.
In this paper we prove that various quasi-categories whose objects are $\infty$-categories in a very general sense are complete: admitting limits indexed by all simplicial sets. This result and others of a similar flavor follow from a general theorem in which we characterize the data that is required to define a limit cone in a quasi-category constructed as a homotopy coherent nerve. Since all quasi-categories arise this way up to equivalence, this analysis covers the general case. Namely, we show that quasi-categorical limit cones may be modeled at the point-set level by pseudo homotopy limit…
We present a combinatorial analogue of the nerve theorem for covers of small categories, using the Grothendieck construction. We apply our result to prove the inclusion-exclusion principle for the Euler characteristic of a finite category.
Many definitions of weak n-category have been proposed. It has been widely observed that each of these definitions is of one of two types: algebraic definitions, in which composites and coherence cells are explicitly specified, and non-algebraic definitions, in which a coherent choice of composites and constraint cells is merely required to exist. Relatively few comparisons have been made between definitions, and most of those that have concern the relationship between definitions of just one type. The aim of this thesis is to establish more comparisons, including a comparison between an algeb…
The classifying diagram was defined by Rezk and is a generalization of the nerve of a category; in contrast to the nerve, the classifying diagram of two categories is equivalent if and only if the categories are equivalent. In this paper we prove that the classifying diagram of any category is characterized in terms of classifying spaces of stabilizers of groups. We also prove explicit decompositions of the classifying diagrams for the categories of finite ordered sets, finite dimensional vector spaces, and finite sets in terms of classifying spaces of groups.
This paper corrects a small mistake in a paper of Dwyer-Kan, and uses this to identify homotopy function complexes in a model category with the nerves of certain categories of zig-zags.
We show that the Street nerve of a strict $ω$-category $C$ is a Kan complex (respectively a quasi-category) if and only if the $n$-cells of $C$ for $n\geq 1$ (respectively $n> 1$) are weakly invertible. Moreover, we equip $\mathcal{N}(C)$ with a structure of saturated complicial set where the $n$-simplices correspond to morphisms from the $n^{th}$ oriental to $C$ sending the unique non-trivial $n$-cell of the domain to a weakly invertible cell of $C$.
The Catalan simplicial set $\mathbb{C}$ is known to classify skew-monoidal categories in the sense that a map from $\mathbb{C}$ to a suitably defined nerve of $\mathrm{Cat}$ is precisely a skew-monoidal category \cite{Catalan1}. We extend this result to the case of skew monoidales internal to any monoidal bicategory $\mathcal{B}$. We then show that monoidal bicategories themselves are classified by maps from $\mathbb{C}$ to a suitably defined nerve of $\mathrm{Bicat}$ and extend this result to obtain a definition of skew-monoidal bicategory that aligns with existing theory.
We prove the compatibility between the suspension construction and the complicial nerve of $ω$-categories. As a motivating application, we produce a Quillen pair between the models of $(\infty,n)$-categories given by Rezk's complete Segal $Θ_n$-spaces and Verity's $n$-complicial sets.
We construct a cofibrantly generated Quillen model structure on the category of small n-fold categories and prove that it is Quillen equivalent to the standard model structure on the category of simplicial sets. An n-fold functor is a weak equivalence if and only if the diagonal of its n-fold nerve is a weak equivalence of simplicial sets. This is an n-fold analogue to Thomason's Quillen model structure on Cat. We introduce an n-fold Grothendieck construction for multisimplicial sets, and prove that it is a homotopy inverse to the n-fold nerve. As a consequence, we completely prove that the un…
In this paper we obtain several model structures on {\bf DblCat}, the category of small double categories. Our model structures have three sources. We first transfer across a categorification-nerve adjunction. Secondly, we view double categories as internal categories in {\bf Cat} and take as our weak equivalences various internal equivalences defined via Grothendieck topologies. Thirdly, {\bf DblCat} inherits a model structure as a category of algebras over a 2-monad. Some of these model structures coincide and the different points of view give us further results about cofibrant replacements …
We describe a category of Feynman graphs and show how it relates to compact symmetric multicategories (coloured modular operads) just as linear orders relate to categories and rooted trees relate to multicategories. More specifically we obtain the following nerve theorem: compact symmetric multicategories can be characterised as presheaves on the category of Feynman graphs subject to a Segal condition. This text is a write-up of the second-named author's QPL6 talk; a more detailed account of this material will appear elsewhere.
The homotopy coherent nerve from simplicial categories to simplicial sets and its left adjoint C are important to the study of (infinity,1)-categories because they provide a means for comparing two models of their respective homotopy theories, giving a Quillen equivalence between the model structures for quasi-categories and simplicial categories. The functor C also gives a cofibrant replacement for ordinary categories, regarded as trivial simplicial categories. However, the hom-spaces of the simplicial category CX arising from a quasi-category X are not well understood. We show that when X is…
This paper is a rather informal guide to some of the basic theory of 2-categories and bicategories, including notions of limit and colimit, 2-dimensional universal algebra, formal category theory, and nerves of bicategories. As is the way of these things, the choice of topics is somewhat personal. No attempt is made at either rigour or completeness. Nor is it completely introductory: you will not find a definition of bicategory; but then nor will you really need one to read it. In keeping with the philosophy of category theory, the morphisms between bicategories play more of a role than the bi…
We introduce the class of isotypic $2$-representations for finitary $2$-categories and the notion of inflation of $2$-representations. Under some natural assumptions we show that isotypic $2$-representations are equivalent to inflations of cell $2$-representations.
We put a model structure on the category of categories internal to simplicial sets whose weak equivalences are reflected by the nerve functor to bisimplicial sets with Rezk's model structure. This model structure is shown to be Quillen equivalent to Rezk's model structure, thus internal category are another model for $(\infty,1)$-categories.
In this dissertation, we compare the "classical" homology of an $ω$-category (defined as the homology of its Street nerve) with its polygraphic homology. More precisely, we prove that both homologies generally do not coincide and call homologically coherent the particular strict $ω$-categories for which polygraphic homology and homology of the nerve do coincide. The goal pursued is to find abstract and concrete criteria to detect homologically coherent $ω$-categories. For example, we prove that all (small) categories, considered as strict $ω$-categories with unit cells above dimension 1, are h…
This paper explores the relationship amongst the various simplicial and pseudo-simplicial objects characteristically associated to any bicategory C. It proves the fact that the geometric realizations of all of these possible candidate `nerves of C' are homotopy equivalent. Any one of these realizations could therefore be taken as the classifying space BC of the bicategory. Its other major result proves a direct extension of Thomason's `Homotopy Colimit Theorem' to bicategories: When the homotopy colimit construction is carried out on a diagram of spaces obtained by applying the classifying spa…
