We lay the foundations for a theory of quasi-categories in a monoidal category $\mathcal{V}$ replacing $\mathrm{Set}$, aimed at realising weak enrichment in the category $S\mathcal{V}$ of simplicial objects in $\mathcal{V}$. To accomodate non-cartesian monoidal products, we make use of an ambient category $S_{\otimes}\mathcal{V}$ of templicial - or 'tensor-simplicial' - objects in $\mathcal{V}$, which are certain colax monoidal functors following Leinster. Inspired by the description of the categorification functor due to Dugger and Spivak, we construct a templicial analogue of the homotopy coherent nerve functor which goes from $S\mathcal{V}$-enriched categories to templicial objects. We show that an $S\mathcal{V}$-enriched category whose underlying simplicial category is locally Kan, is turned into a quasi-category in $\mathcal{V}$ by this nerve functor.
We introduce, for \(\C\) a regular Cartesian Reedy category a model category whose fibrant objects are an analogue of quasicategories enriched in simplicial presheaves on \(C\). We then develop a coherent realization and nerve for this model structure and demonstrate using an enriched version of the necklaces of Dugger and Spivak that our model category is Quillen-equivalent to the category of categories enriched in simplicial presheaves on \(\C\). We then show that for any Cartesian-closed left-Bousfield localization of the category of simplicial presheaves on \(\C\), the coherent nerve and r…
We give a direct proof that middle mapping spaces in coherent nerves of Kan enriched categories have the same homotopy type as the original mapping spaces.
This paper continues the development of a simplicial theory of weak omega-categories, by studying categories which are enriched in weak complicial sets. These complicial Gray-categories generalise both the Kan complex enriched categories of homotopy theory and the Gray-categories of weak 3-category theory. We derive a simplicial nerve construction, which is closely related to Cordier and Porter's homotopy coherent nerve, and show that this faithfully represents complicial Gray-categories as weak complicial sets. The category of weak complicial sets may itself be canonically enriched to a compl…
Many monoidal-type objects are known to be classified by maps from the Catalan simplicial set $\mathbb{C}$ to various nerves of categories and higher categories. There are, for example, three different nerves of the 2-category of categories $\mathsf{Cat}$ with the property that maps from $\mathbb{C}$ into them are in one to one correspondence with strict monoidal, monoidal, and skew monoidal categories. In this last case, the classification result can be understood as justifying the definition of skew monoidal categories intrinsically in terms of the structure of $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper, w…
It is well-known that the category of small dg categories dgCat, though it is monoidal, does not form a monoidal model category. In this paper we construct a monoidal model structure on the category of pointed curved coalgebras ptdCoa* and show that the Quillen equivalence relating it to dgCat is monoidal. We also show that dgCat is a ptdCoa*-enriched model category. As a consequence, the homotopy category of dgCat is closed monoidal and is equivalent as a closed monoidal category to the homotopy category of ptdCoa*. In particular, this gives a conceptual construction of a derived internal hom…
The subject of this paper is a nerve construction for bicategories introduced by Leinster, which defines a fully faithful functor from the category of bicategories and normal pseudofunctors to the category of presheaves over Joyal's category $Θ_2$. We prove that the nerve of a bicategory is a $2$-quasi-category (a model for $(\infty,2)$-categories due to Ara), and moreover that the nerve functor restricts to the right part of a Quillen equivalence between Lack's model structure for bicategories and a Bousfield localisation of Ara's model structure for $2$-quasi-categories. We deduce that Lack'…
Any tricategory characteristically has associated various simplicial or pseudo-simplicial objects. This paper explores the relationship amongst three of them: the pseudo-simplicial bicategory so-called Grothendieck nerve of the tricategory, the simplicial bicategory termed its Segal nerve, and the simplicial set called its Street geometric nerve, and it proves the fact that the geometric realizations of all of these possible candidate 'nerves of the tricategory' are homotopy equivalent. Our results provide coherence for all reasonable extensions to tricategories of Quillen's definition of the …
We develop a model structure on presheaves of small simplicially enriched categories on a site $\mathscr{C}$, for which the weak equivalences are 'stalkwise' weak equivalences for the Bergner model structure. This model structure is right proper, and can be connected via a zig-zag of Quillen equivalences to local analogues of the Joyal and Rezk model structures. Because the local Bergner model structure is right proper, we can apply Jardine's cocycle categories to study its homotopy category. As an application of the cocycle theory, we describe the maps $[*, X]$ in the homotopy category of the…
We study the *homotopy theory* of $\infty$-categories enriched in the $\infty$-category $sS$ of simplicial spaces. That is, we consider $sS$-enriched $\infty$-categories as presentations of ordinary $\infty$-categories by means of a "local" geometric realization functor $Cat_{sS} \to Cat_\infty$, and we prove that their homotopy theory presents the $\infty$-category of $\infty$-categories, i.e. that this functor induces an equivalence $Cat_{sS} [[ W_{DK}^{-1} ]] \xrightarrow{\sim} Cat_\infty$ from a localization of the $\infty$-category of $sS$-enriched $\infty$-categories. Following Dwyer--Ka…
We introduce the notion of weighted limit in an arbitrary quasi-category, suitably generalizing ordinary limits in a quasi-category, and classical weighted limits in an ordinary category. This is accomplished by generalizing Joyal's approach: we identify a meaningful construction for the quasi-category of weighted cones over a diagram in a quasi-category, whose terminal object is the weighted limit of the considered diagram. When the quasi-category arises as the homotopy coherent nerve of a category enriched over Kan complexes, we use techniques by Riehl-Verity to show that the weighted limit …
Triangulated categories arising in algebra can often be described as the homotopy category of a pretriangulated dg-category, a category enriched in chain complexes with a natural notion of shifts and cones that is accessible with all the machinery of homological algebra. Dg-categories are algebraic models of $\infty$-categories and thus fit into a wide ecosystem of higher-categorical models and translations between them. In this paper we describe an equivalence between two methods to turn a pretriangulated dg-category into a quasicategory. The dg-nerve of a dg-category is a quasicategory whose…
Joyal and Street note in their paper on braided monoidal categories [Braided tensor categories, Advances in Math. 102(1993) 20-78] that the 2-category V-Cat of categories enriched over a braided monoidal category V is not itself braided in any way that is based upon the braiding of V. The exception that they mention is the case in which V is symmetric, which leads to V-Cat being symmetric as well. The symmetry in V-Cat is based upon the symmetry of V. The motivation behind this paper is in part to describe how these facts relating V and V-Cat are in turn related to a categorical analogue of to…
In this paper we construct an analogue of Lurie's "unstraightening" construction that we refer to as the "comprehension construction". Its input is a cocartesian fibration $p \colon E \to B$ between $\infty$-categories together with a third $\infty$-category $A$. The comprehension construction then defines a map from the quasi-category of functors from $A$ to $B$ to the large quasi-category of cocartesian fibrations over $A$ that acts on $f \colon A \to B$ by forming the pullback of $p$ along $f$. To illustrate the versatility of this construction, we define the covariant and contravariant Yon…
This work contributes to clarifying several relationships between certain higher categorical structures and the homotopy type of their classifying spaces. Bicategories (in particular monoidal categories) have well understood simple geometric realizations, and we here deal with homotopy types represented by lax diagrams of bicategories, that is, lax functors to the tricategory of bicategories. In this paper, it is proven that, when a certain bicategorical Grothendieck construction is performed on a lax diagram of bicategories, then the classifying space of the resulting bicategory can be though…
We prove the following generalization of a classical result of Adams: for any pointed and connected topological space $(X,b)$, that is not necessarily simply connected, the cobar construction of the differential graded (dg) coalgebra of normalized singular chains in $X$ with vertices at $b$ is weakly equivalent as a differential graded associative algebra (dga) to the singular chains on the Moore based loop space of $X$ at $b$. We deduce this statement from several more general categorical results of independent interest. We construct a functor $\mathfrak{C}_{\square_c}$ from simplicial sets t…
