We say that a projective class in a triangulated category with coproducts is perfect if the corresponding ideal is closed under coproducts of maps. We study perfect projective classes and the associated phantom and cellular towers. Given a perfect generating projective class, we show that every object is isomorphic to the homotopy colimit of a cellular tower associated to that object. Using this result and the Neeman's Freyd--style representability theorem we give a new proof of Brown Representability Theorem.
We give a characterisation of those local not necessary commutative rings, for which the category of projective modules admits a triangulation with the identity as translation functor. By "admits a triangulation" we mean that the category can be given the structure of a triangulated category that satisfies the standard set of axioms including the octahedral axiom.
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a triangulated category with a proper class $ξ$ of triangles. Asadollahi and Salarian introduced and studied $ξ$-Gorenstein projective and $ξ$-Gorenstein injective objects, and developed Gorenstein homological algebra in $\mathcal{C}$. In this paper, we further study Gorenstein homological properties for a triangulated category. First, we discuss the stability of $ξ$-Gorenstein projective objects, and show that the subcategory $\mathcal{GP}(ξ)$ of all $ξ$-Gorenstein projective objects has a strong stability. That is, an iteration of the procedure used to define the $ξ$-Gor…
This is a companion paper of arXiv:1901.09461, where different notions of dimension for triangulated categories are discussed. Here we compute dimensions for some examples of triangulated categories and thus illustrate and motivate material from loc. cit. Our examples include path algebras of finite ordered quivers, orbifold projective lines, some tensor powers of path algebras in Dynkin quivers of type A and categories, generated by an exceptional pair.
For a triangulated category with products we develop a method for constructing a nice set of cogenerators, allowing us to prove a formal criterion in order to satisfy Brown representability for covariant functors. We apply this criterion for showing that both homotopy category of projective modules and homotopy category of projective objects in a category of functors from a small category to a module category satisfy this kind of representability. In particular, homotopy category of projective complexes satisfies Brown representability for covariant functors.
The paper contains general results on the uniqueness of a DG enhancement for triangulated categories. As a consequence we obtain such uniqueness for the unbounded categories of quasi-coherent sheaves, for the triangulated categories of perfect complexes, and for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on quasi-projective schemes. If a scheme is projective then we also prove a strong uniqueness for the triangulated category of perfect complexes and for the bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves. These results directly imply that fully faithful functors from the bounded derive…
Let $R$ be any ring with identity. We show that the homotopy category of all acyclic chain complexes of pure-projective $R$-modules is a compactly generated triangulated category. We do this by constructing abelian model structures that put this homotopy category into a recollement with two other compactly generated triangulated categories: The usual derived category of $R$ and the pure derived category of $R$. This also gives a new model for the derived category.
This paper is dedicated to the study of smashing weight structures (one may say that these are weight structures "coherent with arbitrary coproducts"), and the application of their properties to $t$-structures. In particular, we prove that hearts of compactly generated $t$-structures are Grothendieck abelian; this statement strengthens earlier results of several other authors. The central theorem of the paper is as follows: any perfect set of objects of a triangulated category generates a weight structure; we say that weight structures obtained this way are perfectly generated. An important fa…
In this paper we prove that the dimension of the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on a smooth quasi-projective curve is equal to one. We also discuss dimension spectrums of these categories.
In this paper we establish an equivalence between the category of graded D-branes of type B in Landau-Ginzburg models with homogeneous superpotential W and the triangulated category of singularities of the fiber of W over zero. The main result is a theorem that shows that the graded triangulated category of singularities of the cone over a projective variety is connected via a fully faithful functor to the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on the base of the cone. This implies that the category of graded D-branes of type B in Landau-Ginzburg models with homogeneous superpotential W …
Given a triangulated category over a field $K$ and a field extension $L/K$, we investigate how one can construct a triangulated category over $L$. Our approach produces the derived category of the base change scheme $X_L$ if the category one starts with is the bounded derived category of a smooth projective variety $X$ over $K$ and the field extension is finite and Galois. We also investigate how the dimension of a triangulated category behaves under scalar extensions.
Given an action of a finite group on a triangulated category, we investigate under which conditions one can construct a linearised triangulated category using DG-enhancements. In particular, if the group is a finite group of automorphisms of a smooth projective variety and the category is the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves, then our construction produces the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on the smooth quotient variety resp. stack. We also consider the action given by the tensor product with a torsion canonical bundle and the action of a finite group on the category…
We study singularity categories through Gorenstein objects in triangulated categories and silting theory. Let $ω$ be a semi-selforthogonal (or presilting) subcategory of a triangulated category $\mathcal{T}$. We introduce the notion of $ω$-Gorenstein objects, which is far extended version of Gorenstein projective modules and Gorenstein injective modules in triangulated categories. We prove that the stable category $\underline{\mathcal{G}_ω}$, where $\mathcal{G}_ω$ is the subcategory of all $ω$-Gorenstein objects, is a triangulated category and it is, under some conditions, triangle equivalent …
For any ring R we construct two triangulated categories, each admitting a functor from R-modules that sends projective and injective modules to 0. When R is a quasi-Frobenius or Gorenstein ring, these triangulated categories agree with each other and with the usual stable module category. Our stable module categories are homotopy categories of Quillen model structures on the category of R-modules. These model categories involve generalizations of Gorenstein projective and injective modules that we derive by replacing finitely presented modules by modules of type FP-infinity. Along the way, we …
We introduce and develop an analogous of the Auslander-Buchweitz approximation theory (see \cite{AB}) in the context of triangulated categories, by using a version of relative homology in this setting. We also prove several results concerning relative homological algebra in a triangulated category $\T,$ which are based on the behavior of certain subcategories under finiteness of resolutions and vanishing of Hom-spaces. For example: we establish the existence of preenvelopes (and precovers) in certain triangulated subcategories of $\T.$ The results resemble various constructions and results of …
Given an additive category $\mathcal{C}$ and an integer $n\geqslant 2$. We form a new additive category $\mathcal{C}[ε]^n$ consisting of objects $X$ in $\mathcal{C}$ equipped with an endomorphism $ε_X$ satisfying ${ε^n_X}=0$. First, using the descriptions of projective and injective objects in $\mathcal{C}[ε]^n$, we not only establish a connection between Gorenstein flat modules over a ring $R$ and $R[t]/(t^n)$, but also prove that an Artinian algebra $R$ satisfies some homological conjectures if and only if so does $R[t]/(t^n)$. Then we show that the corresponding homotopy category $\K(\mathc…
We study ideal cotorsion pairs associated to weak proper classes of triangles in extension closed subcategories of triangulated categories. This approach allows us to extend the recent ideal approximations theory developed by Fu, Herzog et al. for exact categories in the above mentioned context, and to provide simplified proofs for the ideal versions of some standard results as Salce's Lemma, Wakamatsu's Lemma and Christensen's Ghost Lemma. In the last part of the paper we apply the theory in order to study connections between projective classes (in particular localization or smashing subcateg…
We study the problem of classifying triangulated categories with finite-dimensional morphism spaces and finitely many indecomposables over an algebraically closed field. We obtain a new proof of the following result due to Xiao and Zhu: the Auslander-Reiten quiver of such a category is of the form $\mathbb{Z}Δ/G$ where $Δ$ is a disjoint union of simply laced Dynkin diagrams and $G$ a weakly admissible group of automorphisms of $\mathbb{Z}Δ$. Then we prove that for `most' groups $G$, the category $\T$ is standard, \emph{i.e.} $k$-linearly equivalent to an orbit category $\mathcal{D}^b(\modd kΔ)…
The Adams spectral sequence is available in any triangulated category equipped with a projective or injective class. Higher Toda brackets can also be defined in a triangulated category, as observed by B. Shipley based on J. Cohen's approach for spectra. We provide a family of definitions of higher Toda brackets, show that they are equivalent to Shipley's, and show that they are self-dual. Our main result is that the Adams differential $d_r$ in any Adams spectral sequence can be expressed as an $(r+1)$-fold Toda bracket and as an $r^{\text{th}}$ order cohomology operation. We also show how the …
For a locally presentable abelian category $\mathsf B$ with a projective generator, we construct the projective derived and contraderived model structures on the category of complexes, proving in particular the existence of enough homotopy projective complexes of projective objects. We also show that the derived category $\mathsf D(\mathsf B)$ is generated, as a triangulated category with coproducts, by the projective generator of $\mathsf B$. For a Grothendieck abelian category $\mathsf A$, we construct the injective derived and coderived model structures on complexes. Assuming Vopenka's prin…
We show that a $\mathbb{P}$-object and simple configurations of $\mathbb{P}$-objects have a formal derived endomorphism algebra. Hence the triangulated category (classically) generated by such objects is independent of the ambient triangulated category. We also observe that the category generated by the structure sheaf of a smooth projective variety over the complex numbers only depends on its graded cohomology algebra.
This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1503.05523 and arXiv:1605.03934. We extend the classical Harrison-Matlis module category equivalences to a triangulated equivalence between the derived categories of the abelian categories of torsion modules and contramodules over a Matlis domain. This generalizes to the case of any commutative ring $R$ with a fixed multiplicative system $S$ such that the $R$-module $S^{-1}R$ has projective dimension $1$. The latter equivalence connects complexes of $R$-modules with $S$-torsion and $S$-contramodule cohomology modules. It takes a nicer form of an equivalence betw…
Let C be triangulated category and X a cluster tilting subcategory of C. Koenig and Zhu showed that the quotient category C/X is Gorenstein of Gorenstein dimension at most one. The notion of an extriangulated category was introduced by Nakaoka and Palu as a simultaneous generalization of exact categories and triangulated categories. Now let C be extriangulated category with enough projectives and enough injectives, and X a cluster tilting subcategory of C. In this article, we show that under certain conditions the quotient category C/X is Gorenstein of Gorenstein dimension at most one. As an a…
We aim to study Morita theory for tensor triangulated categories. For two finite tensor categories having no projective simple objects, we prove that their stable equivalence induced by an exact $\Bbbk$-linear monoidal functor can be lifted to a tensor equivalence under some certain conditions.
We present a notion of $Δ$-stability and stability filtration in arbitrary categories which is equivalent to the existence of Harder-Narasimhan (HN) sequences on objects. Indeed it is equivalent to the existence of a zero morphism, a partial order on objects, and a collection of some universal sequences. In additive categories embedded in an ambient triangulated category, we could obtain a numerical polynomial or central charge of objects by calculating the Euler characteristic of slope sequences and objects, inducing a partial order and HN sequences. In the case of normal projective surfaces …
Relative theories(=closed subfunctors) are considered in exact, triangulated and extriangulated categories by Dräxler-Reiten-Smalø-Solberg-Keller, Beligiannis and Herschend-Liu-Nakaoka, respectively. We give a construction method of closed subfunctors from given half exact functors which contains existing constructions. Moreover, if an extriangulated category has enough projective objects, then every closed subfunctor is obtained by this construction.
In this article, we study the heart of a cotorsion pairs on an exact category and a triangulated category in a unified meathod, by means of the notion of an extriangulated category. We prove that the heart is abelian, and construct a cohomological functor to the heart. If the extriangulated category has enough projectives, this functor gives an equivalence between the heart and the category of coherent functors over the coheart modulo projectives. We also show how an n-cluster tilting subcategory of an extriangulated category gives rise to a family of cotorsion pairs with equivalent hearts.
We investigate the behavior of singularity categories and stable categories of Gorenstein projective modules along a morphism of rings. The natural context to approach the problem is via change of rings, that is, the classical adjoint triple between the module categories. In particular, we identify conditions on the change of rings to induce functors between the two singularity categories or the two stable categories of Gorenstein projective modules. Moreover, we study this problem at the level of `big singularity categories' in the sense of Krause. Along the way we establish an explicit const…
For an exact category $\mathcal{E}$ with enough projectives and with a $d\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategory, we show that the singularity category of $\mathcal{E}$ admits a $d\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategory. To do this we introduce cluster tilting subcategories of left triangulated categories, and we show that there is a correspondence between cluster tilting subcategories of $\mathcal{E}$ and $\underline{\mathcal{E}}$. We also deduce that the Gorenstein projectives of $\mathcal{E}$ admit a $d\mathbb{Z}$-cluster tilting subcategory under some assumptions. Finally, we compute the $…
Let $\mathcal{E}$ be a weakly idempotent complete exact category with enough injective and projective objects. Assume that $\mathcal{M} \subseteq \mathcal{E}$ is a rigid, contravariantly finite subcategory of $\mathcal{E}$ containing all the injective and projective objects, and stable under taking direct sums and summands. In this paper, $\mathcal{E}$ is equipped with the structure of a prefibration category with cofibrant replacements. As a corollary, we show, using the results of Demonet and Liu in \cite{DL}, that the category of finite presentation modules on the costable category $\overli…
In this paper we give a construction of phantom categories, i.e. admissible triangulated subcategories in bounded derived categories of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties that have trivial Hochschild homology and trivial Grothendieck group. We also prove that these phantom categories are phantoms in a stronger sense, namely, they have trivial K-motives and, hence, all their higher K-groups are trivial too.
Given a locally coherent Grothendieck category G, we prove that the homotopy category of complexes of injective objects (also known as the coderived category of G) is compactly generated triangulated. Moreover, the full subcategory of compact objects is none other than D^b(fp G). If G admits a generating set of finitely presentable objects of finite projective dimension, then also the derived category of G is compactly generated and Krause's recollement exists. Our main tools are (a) model theoretic techniques and (b) a systematic study of the pure derived category of an additive finitely acce…
Let $R$ be an artin ring and $Θ=\{Θ(1),Θ(2),\cdots,Θ(n)\}$ be a family of objects in an artin extriangulated $R$-category $(\cal C,\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$ such that $\mathbb{E}(Θ(j),Θ(i))=0$ for all $j\geq i$. In this paper, we show that the class $\cal P(Θ)$ of the $Θ$-projective objects is a precovering class and the class $\cal I(Θ)$ of the $Θ$-injective objects is a preenveloping one in $\cal C$. Furthermore, if $\cal C$ has enough projectives and enough injectives, we show that the subcategory $\cal F(Θ)$ of $Θ$-filtered objects is functorially finite in $\cal C$. As an appliacation, th…
We discuss the following problem: how can an arbitrary Fourier-Mukai transform $ϕ: \mathrm{D}^{\mathrm{b}}( \mathbb{P}^a ) \rightarrow \mathrm{D}^{\mathrm{b}}( \mathbb{P}^b )$ between the bounded derived categories of two projective spaces of dimensions $a$ and $b$ be expressed in explicit terms as an exact functor between the homotopy categories $\mathrm{K}^{\mathrm{b}}( \mathbb{B}^a ) \rightarrow \mathrm{K}^{\mathrm{b}}( \mathbb{B}^b )$ generated by the full strong exceptional sequences of the line bundles $\mathbb{B}^a = \{\mathcal{O}(-a), \dots, \mathcal{O}\}$ and $\mathbb{B}^b = \{\mathca…
Let $(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$ be an extriangulated category with a proper class $ξ$ of $\mathbb{E}$-triangles. The authors introduced and studied $ξ$-$\mathcal{G}$projective and $ξ$-$\mathcal{G}$injective in \cite{HZZ}. In this paper, we discuss Gorenstein homological dimensions for extriangulated categories. More precisely, we first give some characterizations of $ξ$-$\mathcal{G}$projective dimension by using derived functors on $\mathcal{C}$. Second, let $\mathcal{P}(ξ)$ (resp. $\mathcal{I}(ξ)$) be a generating (resp. cogenerating) subcategory of $\mathcal{C}$. We show that the…
We initiate the study of derived functors in the setting of extriangulated categories. By using coends, we adapt Yoneda's theory of higher extensions to this framework. We show that, when there are enough projectives or enough injectives, thus defined extensions agree with the ones defined earlier via projective or injective resolutions. For categories with enough projective or enough injective morphisms, we prove that these are right derived functors of the $\operatorname{Hom}$-bifunctor in either argument. Since $\operatorname{Hom}$ is only half-exact in each argument, it is natural to expec…
In this article, we initiate the study of hereditary extriangulated categories. Many important categories arising in representation theory in connection with various theories of mutation are hereditary extriangulated. Special cases include homotopy categories of 2-term complexes with projective components, which are related to silting mutation, and cluster categories (with relevant relative extriangulated structures) where cluster tilting mutation take place. We prove that there is a theory of irreducible mutation for maximal rigid objects and subcategories in hereditary extriangulated categor…
