In this article we study the existence, continuation and bifurcation from infinity of nonconstant solutions for a nonlinear Neumann problem. We apply the Leray-Schauder degree and the degree for SO(2)-equivariant gradient operators defined by the second author.
We consider elliptic equations in planar domains with mixed boundary conditions of Dirichlet-Neumann type. Sharp asymptotic expansions of the solutions and unique continuation properties from the Dirichlet-Neumann junction are proved.
In this paper we develop a monotonicity formula for elliptic systems with Neumann boundary coupling, proving unique continuation and classification of blow-up profiles. As an application, we obtain strong unique continuation for some fourth order equations and higher order fractional problems.
We derive local asymptotics of solutions to second order elliptic equations at the edge of a $(N-1)$-dimensional crack, with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions prescribed on both sides of the crack. A combination of blow-up analysis and monotonicity arguments provides a classification of all possible asymptotic homogeneities of solutions at the crack's tip, together with a a strong unique continuation principle.
We consider an elliptic equation in a cone, endowed with (possibly inhomogeneous) Neumann conditions. The operator and the forcing terms can also allow non-Lipschitz singularities at the vertex of the cone. In this setting, we provide unique continuation results, both in terms of interior and boundary points. The proof relies on a suitable Almgren-type frequency formula with remainders. As a byproduct, we obtain classification results for blow-up limits.
We consider the sublinear problem \begin {equation*} \left\{\begin{array}{r c l c} -Δu & = &|u|^{q-2}u & \textrm{in }Ω, \\ u_n & = & 0 & \textrm{on }\partialΩ,\end{array}\right. \end {equation*} where $Ω\subset \real^N$ is a bounded domain, and $1 \leq q < 2$. For $q=1$, $|u|^{q-2}u$ will be identified with $\sgn(u)$. We establish a variational principle for least energy nodal solutions, and we investigate their qualitative properties. In particular, we show that they satisfy a unique continuation property (their zero set is Lebesgue-negligible). Moreover, if $Ω$ is radial, then least energy n…
In this paper, we establish a globally quantitative estimate of unique continuation at one time point for solutions of parabolic equations with Neumann boundary conditions in bounded domains. Our proof is mainly based on Carleman commutator estimates and a global frequency function argument, which is motivated from a recent work [5]. As an application, we obtain an observability inequality from measurable sets in time for all solutions of the above equations.
In this paper we analyze some properties of a sixth order elliptic operator arising in the framework of the strain gradient linear elasticity theory for nanoplates in flexural deformation. We first rigorously deduce the weak formulation of the underlying Neumann problem as well as its well posedness. Under some suitable smoothness assumptions on the coefficients and on the geometry we derive interior and boundary regularity estimates for the solution of the Neumann problem. Finally, for the case of isotropic materials, we obtain new Strong Unique Continuation results in the interior, in the fo…
This article contains a new discussion for the generalized fractional Cauchy-type problem involving Hilfer-Katugampola-type fractional derivative. We study an existence and continuation of its solution. Firstly, we establish a new theorems of local existence. Then, we deduce a continuation theorems for a general fractional differential equations. By applying continuation theorems deduced in this article, we present several global existence results. Moreover, the examples are given to illustrate our main results.
The aim of this article is to prove an "almost" global existence result for some semilinear wave equations in the plane outside a bounded convex obstacle with the Neumann boundary condition.
We establish the existence and uniqueness of variational solution to the nonlinear Neumann boundary problem for the $p^{th}$-Sub-Laplacian associated to a system of Hörmander vector fields
In this paper, we prove two unique continuation results for second order elliptic equations with Robin boundary conditions on $C^{1,1}$ domains. The first one is a sharp vanishing order estimate of Robin problems with Lipschitz coefficients and differentiable, sign-changing potentials. This generalizes the result for the "Robin eigenfunctions" in [26], which deals with the case with constant potentials. The second result is a unique continuation result from the boundary -- any non-trivial solution cannot vanish at infinite order from the boundary or vanish on an open subset on the boundary. Su…
We provide a counterexample of Wente's inequality in the context of Neumann boundary conditions. We will also show that Wente's estimates fails for general boundary conditions of Robin type.
We develop some properties of the $p-$Neumann derivative for the fractional $p-$Laplacian in bounded domains with general $p>1$. In particular, we prove the existence of a diverging sequence of eigenvalues and we introduce the evolution problem associated to such operators, studying the basic properties of solutions. Finally, we study a nonlinear problem with source in absence of the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition.
We consider a family of non-local evolution equations including the $0-$Holm-Staley equation. We show that the family considered does not posses compactly supported solutions as long as the initial data is non-trivial. Also, we prove different unique continuation results for the solutions of the family studied. In addition, some special solutions, such as peakons and kinks, are studied and their dynamics are analyzed. Persistence properties of the solutions are also investigated as well as we describe the scenario for the global existence of solutions of the $0-$Holm-Staley equation. In partic…
We show the existence and multiplicity of concentrating solutions to a pure Neumann slightly supercritical problem in a ball. This is the first existence result for this kind of problems in the supercritical regime. Since the solutions must satisfy a compatibility condition of zero average, all of them have to change sign. Our proofs are based on a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction argument which incorporates the zero-average condition using suitable symmetries. Our approach also guarantees the existence and multiplicity of solutions to subcritical Neumann problems in annuli. More general symmetric d…
We investigate the Westervelt equation with several versions of nonlinear damping and lower order damping terms and Neumann as well as absorbing boundary conditions. We prove local in time existence of weak solutions under the assumption that the initial and boundary data are sufficiently small. Additionally, we prove local well-posedness in the case of spatially varying $L^{\infty}$ coefficients, a model relevant in high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) applications.
In this paper, we prove almost global existence of solutions to certain quasilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities in infinite homogeneous waveguides with Neumann boundary conditions. We use a Galerkin method to expand the Laplacian of the compact base in terms of its eigenfunctions. For those terms corresponding to zero modes, we obtain decay using analogs of estimates of Klainerman and Sideris. For the nonzero modes, estimates for Klein-Gordon equations, which provide better decay, are available.
In this note we consider a semilinear elliptic equation in $B_R$ with the nonlinear boundary condition, where $B_R$ is a ball of radius $R$. Under certain conditions, we establish a sufficient condition on the non-existence of solutions provided that $R$ is sufficiently large. The main argument is based on applying the asymptotic analysis to the equation with respect to $R\gg1$.
We prove the existence of a principal eigenvalue associated to the $\infty$-Laplacian plus lower order terms and the Neumann boundary condition in a bounded smooth domain. As an application we get uniqueness and existence results for the Neumann problem and a decay estimate for viscosity solutions of the Neumann evolution problem.
We classify positive solutions to a class of quasilinear equations with Neumann or Robin boundary conditions in convex domains. Our main tool is an integral formula involving the trace of some relevant quantities for the problem. Under a suitable condition on the nonlinearity, a relevant consequence of our results is that we can extend to weak solutions a celebrated result obtained for stable solutions by Casten and Holland and by Matano.
We prove that the defocusing quintic wave equation, with Neumann boundary conditions, is globally wellposed on $H^1_N(Ω) \times L^2(Ω)$ for any smooth (compact) domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^3$. The proof relies on one hand on $L^p$ estimates for the spectral projector by Smith and Sogge, and on the other hand on a precise analysis of the boundary value problem, which turns out to be much more delicate than in the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions.
We prove that uniqueness for the Calderón problem on a Riemannian manifold with boundary follows from a hypothetical unique continuation property for the elliptic operator $Δ+V+(Λ^{1}_{t}-q)\otimes (Λ^{2}_{t}-q)$ defined on $\partial\mathcal{M}^{2}\times [0,1]$ where $V$ and $q$ are potentials and $Λ^{i}_{t}$ is a Dirichlet-Neumann operator at depth $t$. This is done by showing that the difference of two Dirichlet-Neumann maps is equal to the Neumann boundary values of the solution to an inhomogeneous equation for said operator, where the source term is a measure supported on the diagonal of $…
In this paper we show the existence of two principal eigenvalues associated to general non-convex fully nonlinear elliptic operators with Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded $C^2$ domain. We study these objects and we establish some of their basic properties. Finally, Lipschitz regularity, uniqueness and existence results for the solution of the Neumann problem are given.
In this article we study an inverse problem for the space-time fractional parabolic operator $(\partial_t-Δ)^s+Q$ with $0<s<1$ in any space dimension. We uniquely determine the unknown bounded potential $Q$ from infinitely many exterior Dirichlet-to-Neumann type measurements. This relies on Runge approximation and the dual global weak unique continuation properties of the equation under consideration. In discussing weak unique continuation of our operator, a main feature of our argument relies on a Carleman estimate for the associated fractional parabolic Caffarelli-Silvestre extension. Furthe…
In this paper we are going to show the existence of a nontrivial solution to the following model problem, $\{\begin{array}{lll} - Δ(u) = 2uln(1+u^2)+\frac{|u|^2}{1+u^2}2u+usin(u) {a.e. on} Ω \frac{\partial u}{\partial η} = 0 {a.e. on} \partial Ω. \end{array} \}$ As one can see the right hand side is superlinear. But we can not use an Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition in order to obtain that the corresponding energy functional satisfies (PS) condition. However, it follows that the energy functional satisfies the Cerami (PS) condition.
In this paper we study a Neumann problem for the fractional Laplacian, namely \begin{equation}\left\{ \begin{array}{rcll} \varepsilon^{2s}(- Δ)^{s}u + u &=& f(u) \ \ &\mbox{in} \ \ Ω\\ \mathcal{N}_{s}u &=& 0 , \,\, &\text{in} \,\, \mathbb{R}^{N}\backslash Ω\end{array}\right. \end{equation} where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{N}$ is a smooth bounded domain, $N>2s$, $s \in (0,1)$, $\varepsilon > 0$ is a parameter and $\mathcal{N}_{s}$ is the nonlocal normal derivative introduced by Dipierro, Ros-Oton, and Valdinoci. We establish the existence of a nonnegative, non-constant small energy solution $u_{\var…
In this paper we study existence and spectral properties for weak solutions of Neumann and Dirichlet problems associated to second order linear degenerate elliptic partial differential operators $X$, with rough coefficients of the form $$X=-\text{div}(P\nabla )+{\bf HR}+{\bf S^\prime G} +F$$ in a geometric homogeneous space setting where the $n\times n$ matrix function $P=P(x)$ is allowed to degenerate. We give a maximum principle for weak solutions of $Xu\leq 0$ and follow this with a result describing a relationship between compact projection of the degenerate Sobolev space $QH^{1,p}$ into $…
Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\R^n$, $n\ge 3$, $0<m\le\frac{n-2}{n}$, $a_1,a_2,..., a_{i_0}\inΩ$, $δ_0=\min_{1\le i\le i_0}{dist }(a_i,\1Ω)$ and let $Ω_δ=Ω\setminus\cup_{i=1}^{i_0}B_δ(a_i)$ and $\hatΩ=Ω\setminus\{a_1\,...,a_{i_0}\}$. For any $0<δ<δ_0$ we will prove the existence and uniqueness of positive solution of the Neumann problem for the equation $u_t=Δu^m$ in $Ω_δ\times (0,T)$ for some $T>0$. We will prove the existence of singular solutions of this equation in $\hatΩ\times (0,T)$ for some $T>0$ that blow-up at the points $a_1,..., a_{i_0}$.
We prove uniform parabolic Hölder estimates of De Giorgi-Nash-Moser type for sequences of minimizers of the functionals \[ \mathcal{E}_\varepsilon(W) = \int_0^\infty \frac{e^{- t/\varepsilon}}{\varepsilon} \bigg\{ \int_{\mathbb{R}_+^{N+1}} y^a \left( \varepsilon|\partial_t W|^2 + |\nabla W|^2 \right) dX + \int_{\mathbb{R}^N \times\{0\}} Φ(w) dx \bigg\}dt, \qquad \varepsilon \in (0,1) \] where $a \in (-1,1)$ is a fixed parameter, $\mathbb{R}_+^{N+1}$ is the upper half-space and $dX = dxdy$. As a consequence, we deduce the existence and Hölder regularity of weak solutions to a class of weighted …
This paper presents a theoretical discussion as well as novel solution algorithms for problems of scattering on smooth two-dimensional domains under Zaremba boundary conditions for which Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are specified on various portions of the domain boundary. The theoretical basis of the proposed numerical methods, which is provided for the first time in the present contribution, concerns detailed information about the singularity structure of solutions of the Helmholtz operator under boundary conditions of Zaremba type. The new numerical method is based on use of Green funct…
In this work we consider the Neumann problem for the Laplace operator and we prove an existence result in the Hölder spaces and obtain Schauder estimates. According to our knowledge this result is not explicitly proved in the several works devoted to the Schauder theory, where similar theorems are proved in detail for the Dirichlet and oblique derivative problems. Our contribution is to make explicit the existence and the estimate for the Neumann problem.
The aim of this paper is to apply the modified potential well method and some new differential inequalities to study the asymptotic behavior of solutions to the initial homogeneous $\hbox{Neumann}$ problem of a nonlinear diffusion equation driven by the $p(x)$-\hbox{Laplace} operator. Complete classification of global existence and blow-up in finite time of solutions is given when the initial data satisfies different conditions. Roughly speaking, we obtain a threshold result for the solution to exist globally or to blow up in finite time when the initial energy is subcritical and critical, res…
In this paper we show how to use a Tug-of-War game to obtain existence of a viscosity solution to the infinity laplacian with non-homogeneous mixed boundary conditions. For a Lipschitz and positive function $g$ there exists a viscosity solution of the mixed boundary value problem, $$ \{\begin{array}{ll} \displaystyle -Δ_{\infty}u(x)=0\quad & \text{in} Ω, \displaystyle \frac{\partial u}{\partial n}(x)= g (x)\quad & \text{on} Γ_N, \displaystyle u(x)= 0 \quad & \text{on} Γ_D. \end{array}. $$
We discuss local and global existence and uniqueness for the price formation free boundary model with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions introduced by Lasry & Lions in 2007. The results are based on a transformation of the problem to the heat equation with nonstandard boundary conditions. The free boundary becomes the zero level set of the solution of the heat equation. The transformation allows us to construct an explicit solution and discuss the behavior of the free boundary. Global existence can be verified under certain conditions on the free boundary and examples of non-existence are…
We study the critical Neumann problem \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu = |u|^{2^*-2}u &\text{in }Σ_ω,\\ \quad\frac{\partial u}{\partialν}=0 &\text{on }\partialΣ_ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} in the unbounded cone $Σ_ω:=\{tx:x\inω\text{ and }t>0\}$, where $ω$ is an open connected subset of the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{N-1}$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ with smooth boundary, $N\geq 3$ and $2^*:=\frac{2N}{N-2}$. We assume that some local convexity condition at the boundary of the cone is satisfied. If $ω$ is symmetric with respect to the north pole of $\mathbb{S}^{N-1}$, we establish the existence of a …
We discuss the inverse problem of determining the possible presence of an (n-1)-dimensional crack Σin an n-dimensional body Ωwith n > 2 when the so-called Dirichlet-to-Neumann map is given on the boundary of Ω. In combination with quantitative unique continuation techniques, an optimal single-logarithm stability estimate is proven by using the singular solutions method. Our arguments also apply when the Neumann-to-Dirichlet map or the local versions of the D-N and the N-D map are available.
Let $Ω$ be a smooth bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^{N}$, with $N\geq 5$, $a>0$, $α\geq 0$ and $2^*=\frac{2N}{N-2}$. We show that the the exponent $q=\frac{2(N-1)}{N-2}$ plays a critical role regarding the existence of least energy (or ground state) solutions of the Neumann problem $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu+au=u^{2^*-1}-αu^{q-1}&\mbox{in}\ Ω,\\ u>0&\mbox{in}\ Ω,\\ \frac{\partial u}{\partialν}=0&\mbox{on}\ \partialΩ. \end{array}\right. $$ Namely, we prove that when $q=\frac{2(N-1)}{N-2}$ there exists an $α_{0}>0$ such that the problem has a least energy solution if $α<α_{0}$ and has no leas…
We study the Neumann and Dirichlet problems for the total variation flow in metric measure spaces. We prove existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and study their asymptotic behaviour. Furthermore, in the Neumann problem we provide a notion of solutions which is valid for $L^1$ initial data, as well as prove their existence and uniqueness. Our main tools are the first-order linear differential structure due to Gigli and a version of the Gauss-Green formula.
we study on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary, the problems of existence and multiplicity of solutions to a Neumann problem involving the p-Laplacian operator and critical Sobolev exponents.
We consider the spatially inhomogeneous Landau equation with soft potentials, including the case of Coulomb interactions. First, we establish the existence of solutions for a short time, assuming the initial data is in a fourth-order Sobolev space and has Gaussian decay in the velocity variable (no decay assumptions are made in the spatial variable). Next, we show that the evolution instantaneously spreads mass to every point in its domain. The resulting pointwise lower bounds have a sub-Gaussian rate of decay, which we show is optimal. The proof of mass-spreading is based on a stochastic proc…
In this paper, we establish a global $C^2$ estimates to the Neumann problem for a class of fullly nonlinear elliptic equations. By the method of continuity, we establish the existence theorem of $k$-admissible solutions of the Neumann problems.
In this paper we prove that a singularly perturbed Neumann problem with potentials admits the existence of interior spikes concentrating in maxima and minima of an auxiliary function depending only on the potentials.
In this paper, we establish a priori estimates for a class of fully nonlinear equations with Neumann boundary conditions. By the continuity method, we have obtained the existence theorem for the Neumann problem.
In this paper, we establish global C^2 estimates for a class of mixed Hessian equations with Neumann boundary condition, and obtain the existence theorem of k-admissible solutions for the classical Neumann problem of these mixed Hessian equations.
In the present paper we prove existence results for solutions to nonlinear elliptic Neumann problems whose prototype is \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δ_{p} u -\text{div} (c(x)|u|^{p-2}u)) =f & \text{in}\ Ω, \\ \left( |\nabla u|^{p-2}\nabla u+ c(x)|u|^{p-2}u \right)\cdot\underline n=0 & \text{on}\ \partial Ω\,, \end{cases} \end{equation*} when $f$ is just a summable function. Our approach allows also to deduce a stability result for renormalized solutions and an existence result for operator with a zero order term.
We deal with the existence of weak solutions for a mixed Neumann-Robin-Cauchy problem. The existence results are based on global-in-time estimates of approximating solutions, and the passage to the limit exploits compactness techniques. We investigate explicit estimates for solutions of the parabolic equations with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions and distributional right hand sides. The parabolic equation is of divergence form with discontinuous coefficients. We consider a nonlinear condition on a part of the boundary that the power laws (and the Robin boundary condition) appear as particul…
