In this paper, we prove almost global existence of solutions to certain quasilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities in infinite homogeneous waveguides with Neumann boundary conditions. We use a Galerkin method to expand the Laplacian of the compact base in terms of its eigenfunctions. For those terms corresponding to zero modes, we obtain decay using analogs of estimates of Klainerman and Sideris. For the nonzero modes, estimates for Klein-Gordon equations, which provide better decay, are available.
We establish the multiplicity of positive solutions to a quasilinear Neumann problem in expanding balls and hemispheres with critical exponent in the boundary condition.
We classify positive solutions to a class of quasilinear equations with Neumann or Robin boundary conditions in convex domains. Our main tool is an integral formula involving the trace of some relevant quantities for the problem. Under a suitable condition on the nonlinearity, a relevant consequence of our results is that we can extend to weak solutions a celebrated result obtained for stable solutions by Casten and Holland and by Matano.
In this paper we study the shape of least-energy solutions to a singularly perturbed quasilinear problem with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We use an intrinsic variation method to show that at limit, the global maximum point of least-energy solutions goes to a point on the boundary faster than the linear rate and this point on the boundary approaches to a point where the mean curvature of the boundary achieves its maximum. We also give a complete proof of exponential decay of least-energy solutions.
We provide a general approach to the classification results of stable solutions of (possibly nonlinear) elliptic problems with Robin conditions. The method is based on a geometric formula of Poincaré type, which is inspired by a classical work of Sternberg and Zumbrun and which gives an accurate description of the curvatures of the level sets of the stable solutions. {F}rom this, we show that the stable solutions of a quasilinear problem with Neumann data are necessarily constant. As a byproduct of this, we obtain an alternative proof of a celebrated result of Casten and Holland, and Matano. I…
Uniqueness of the strong positive solution for a general quasilinear elliptic problem with variable exponents and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions using a generalization of the $p(x)$-Díaz-Saa inequality
We establish a spatial gradient maximum principle for classical solutions to the initial and Neumann boundary value problem of some quasilinear parabolic equations on smooth convex domains.
Bounded smooth solutions of the Dirichlet and Neumann problems for a wide variety of quasilinear parabolic equations, including graphical anisotropic mean curvature flows, have gradient bounded in terms of oscillation and elapsed time.
In this paper we consider two elliptic problems. The first one is a Dirichlet problem while the second is Neumann. We extend all the known results concerning Landesman-Laser conditions by using the Mountain-Pass theorem with the Cerami $(PS)$ condition.
In this article, we study the boundary inverse problem of determining the aligned magnetic fiaeld appearing in the magnetic Schrödinger equation in a periodic quantum cylindrical waveguide. Provided that the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map of the magnetic Schrödinger equation. We prove a Holder stability estimate with respect to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, by means of the geometrical optics solutions of the magnetic Schrodinger equation.
The aim of this paper is analyzing existence, multiplicity, and regularity issues for the positive solutions of a Neumann boundary value problem of superlinear indefinite type related to the mean curvature operator with a sublinear potential at infinity.
Boundary value problems for a class of quasilinear elliptic equations, with an Orlicz type growth and L^1 right-hand side are considered. Both Dirichlet and Neumann problems are contemplated. Existence and uniqueness of generalized solutions, as well as their regularity, are established. The case of measure right-hand sides is also analyzed.
In this paper we present some very recent results regarding existence, uniqueness, and multiplicity of solutions for quasilinear elliptic equations and systems, exhibiting both singular and convective reaction terms. The importance of boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, or Robin) is also discussed. Existence is achieved via sub-supersolution and truncation techniques, fixed point theory, nonlinear regularity, and set-valued analysis, while uniqueness and multiplicity are obtained by monotonicity arguments.
The paper is devoted to investigating long time behavior of smooth small data solutions to 3-D quasilinear wave equations outside of compact convex obstacles with Neumann boundary conditions.
We investigate a quasilinear system consisting of the Westervelt equation from nonlinear acoustics and Pennes bioheat equation, subject to Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. The concept of maximal regularity of type $L_p$-$L_q$ is applied to prove local and global well-posedness. Moreover, we show by a parameter trick that the solutions regularize instantaneously. Finally, we compute the equilibria of the system and investigate the long-time behaviour of solutions starting close to equilibria.
We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps given on an arbitrary open non-empty portion of the boundary of a smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$, for classes of semilinear and quasilinear conductivity equations, determines the nonlinear conductivities uniquely. The main ingredient in the proof is a certain $L^1$-density result involving sums of products of gradients of harmonic functions which vanish on a closed proper subset of the boundary.
We consider the inverse problem of recovering an isotropic quasilinear conductivity from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map when the conductivity depends on the solution and its gradient. We show that the conductivity can be recovered on an open subset of small gradients, hence extending a partial result to all real analytic conductivities. We also recover non-analytic conductivities with additional growth assumptions along large gradients. Moreover, the results hold for non-homogeneous conductivities if the non-homogeneous part is assumed known.
In this work we analyze the solutions of a $p$-Laplacian equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions set in a family of rough domains with a nonlinear term concentrated on the boundary. At the limit, we get a nonlinear boundary condition capturing the oscillatory geometry of the strip where the reactions take place.
In this paper we consider an inverse coefficients problem for a quasilinear elliptic equation of divergence form $\nabla\cdot\vec{C}(x,\nabla u(x))=0$, in a bounded smooth domain $Ω$. We assume that $\overrightarrow{C}(x,\vec{p})=γ(x)\vec{p}+\vec{b}(x)|\vec{p}|^2+\mathcal{O}(|\vec{p}|^3)$, by expanding $\overrightarrow{C}(x,\vec{p})$ around $\vec{p}=0$. We give a reconstruction method for $γ$ and $\vec{b}$ from the Dirichlet to Neumann map defined on $\partialΩ$.
In this paper we show uniqueness of the conductivity for the quasilinear Calderón's inverse problem. The nonlinear conductivity depends, in a nonlinear fashion, of the potential itself and its gradient. Under some structural assumptions on the direct problem, a real-valued conductivity allowing a small analytic continuation to the complex plane induces a unique Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DN) map. The method of proof considers some complex-valued, linear test functions based on a point of the boundary of the domain, and a linearization of the DN map placed at these particular set of solutions.
We consider the linear wave equation $V(x) u_{tt}(x, t) - u_{xx}(x, t) = 0$ on $[0, \infty)\times[0, \infty)$ with initial conditions and a nonlinear Neumann boundary condition $u_x(0, t) = (f(u_t(0,t)))_t$ at $x=0$. This problem is an exact reduction of a nonlinear Maxwell problem in electrodynamics. In the case where $f\colon\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}$ is an increasing homeomorphism we study global existence, uniqueness and wellposedness of the initial value problem by the method of characteristics and fixed point methods. We also prove conservation of energy and momentum and discuss why there …
In this work we consider the identifiability of two coefficients $a(u)$ and $c(x)$ in a quasilinear elliptic partial differential equation from observation of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map. We use a linearization procedure due to Isakov [On uniqueness in inverse problems for semilinear parabolic equations. Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, 1993] and special singular solutions to first determine $a(0)$ and $c(x)$ for $x \in Ω$. Based on this partial result, we are then able to determine $a(u)$ for $u \in \mathbb{R}$ by an adjoint approach.
In this paper we prove global and almost global existence theorems for nonlinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities in infinite homogeneous waveguides. We can handle both the case of Dirichlet boundary conditions and Neumann boundary conditions. In the case of Neumann boundary conditions we need to assume a natural nonlinear Neumann condition on the quasilinear terms. The results that we obtain are sharp in terms of the assumptions on the dimensions for the global existence results and in terms of the lifespan for the almost global results. For nonlinear wave equations, in the case w…
We study the boundary exact controllability for the quasilinear wave equation in the higher-dimensional case. Our main tool is the geometric analysis. We derive the existence of long time solutions near an equilibrium, prove the locally exact controllability around the equilibrium under some checkable geometrical conditions. We then establish the globally exact controllability in such a way that the state of the quasilinear wave equation moves from an equilibrium in one location to an equilibrium in another location under some geometrical condition. The Dirichlet action and the Neumann action …
We analyze existence, multiplicity and oscillatory behavior of positive radial solutions to a class of quasilinear equations governed by the Lorentz-Minkowski mean curvature operator. The equation is set in a ball or an annulus of $\mathbb R^N$, is subject to homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, and involves a nonlinear term on which we do not impose any growth condition at infinity. The main tool that we use is the shooting method for ODEs.
We study a nonlinear parametric Neumann problem driven by a nonhomogeneous quasilinear elliptic differential operator $\operatorname{div}(a(x,\nabla u))$, a special case of which is the $p$-Laplacian. The reaction term is a nonlinearity function $f$ which exhibits $(p-1)$-subcritical growth. By using variational methods, we prove a multiplicity result on the existence of weak solutions for such problems. An explicit example of an application is also presented.
We prove Hölder continuity up to the boundary for solutions of quasi-linear degenerate elliptic problems in divergence form, not necessarily of variational type, on Lipschitz domains with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. This includes the $p$-Laplace operator for all $p \in (1,\infty)$, but also operators with unbounded coefficients. Based on the elliptic result we show that the corresponding parabolic problem is well-posed in the space $C(\barΩ)$ provided that the coefficients satisfy a mild monotonicity condition. More precisely, we show that the realization of the elliptic operator in…
Quantum waveguide with the shape of planar infinite straight strip and combined Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions on the opposite half-lines of the boundary is considered. The absence of the point as well as of the singular continuous spectrum is proved.
We analyze a family of singular Schrödinger operators describing a Neumann waveguide with a periodic array of singular traps of a $δ'$ type. We show that in the limit when perpendicular size of the guide tends to zero and the $δ'$ interactions are appropriately scaled, the first spectral gap is determined exclusively by geometric properties of the traps.
We consider the unique recovery of a non compactly supported and non periodic perturbation of a Schrödinger operator in an unbounded cylindrical domain, also called waveguide, from boundary measurements. More precisely, we prove recovery of general class of electric potentials from the partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, where the Dirichlet data is supported on slightly more than half of the boundary and the Neumann data is taken on the other half of the boundary. We apply this result in different context including recovery of some general class of coefficients from measurements on a bounded sub…
Modal expansions are useful to understand wave propagation in an infinite electromagnetic transmission line or waveguide. They can also be used to construct generalized Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps that can be used to provide artificial boundary conditions for truncating a computational domain when discretizing the field by finite elements. The modes of a waveguide arise as eigenfunctions of a non-symmetric eigenvalue problem, and the eigenvalues determine the propagation (or decay) of the modes along the waveguide. For the successful use of waveguide modes, it is necessary to know that the modes…
This paper deals with existence and multiplicity of positive solutions for a quasilinear problem with Neumann boundary conditions, set in a ball. The problem admits at least one constant non-zero solution and it involves a nonlinearity that can be supercritical in the sense of Sobolev embeddings. The main tools used are variational techniques and the shooting method for ODE's. These results are contained in [6,3].
For $p>2$, we consider the quasilinear equation $-Δ_p u+|u|^{p-2}u=g(u)$ in the unit ball $B$ of $\mathbb R^N$, with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The assumptions on $g$ are very mild and allow the nonlinearity to be possibly supercritical in the sense of Sobolev embeddings. We prove the existence of a nonconstant, positive, radially nondecreasing solution via variational methods. In the case $g(u)=|u|^{q-2}u$, we detect the asymptotic behavior of these solutions as $q\to\infty$.
We consider the operator $H:= \partial_t -Δ+V$ in 2D or 3D waveguide. With an adapted global Carleman estimate with singular weight functions we give a stability result for the time dependent part of the potential for this particular geometry. Two cases are considered: the bounded waveguide with mixed Dirichlet and Neumann conditions and the open waveguide with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
We consider a waveguide-like domain consisting of two thin straight tubular domains connected through a tiny window. The perpendicular size of this waveguide is of order $\varepsilon$. Under the assumption that the window is appropriately scaled we prove that the Neumann Laplacian on this domain converges in (a kind of) norm resolvent sense as $\varepsilon\to 0$ to a one-dimensional Schrödinger operator corresponding to a $δ'$-interaction of a non-negative strength. We estimate the rate of this convergence, also we prove the convergence of spectra.
We obtain estimates on the continuous dependence on the coefficient for second order non-linear degenerate Neumann type boundary value problems. Our results extend previous work of Cockburn et.al., Jakobsen-Karlsen, and Gripenberg to problems with more general boundary conditions and domains. A new feature here is that we account for the dependence on the boundary conditions. As one application of our continuous dependence results, we derive for the first time the rate of convergence for the vanishing viscosity method for such problems. We also derive new explicit continuous dependence on the …
We consider a parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis system generalizing \[ \begin{cases}\begin{split} & u_t=\nabla\cdot((u+1)^{m-1}\nabla u)-\nabla \cdot(u(u+1)^{σ-1}\nabla v)\\ & 0 = Δv - v + u \end{split}\end{cases} \] in bounded smooth domains $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, $N\ge 3$, and with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We show that *) solutions are global and bounded if $σ<m-\frac{N-2}N$ *) solutions are global if $σ\le 0$ *) close to given radially symmetric functions there are many initial data producing unbounded solutions if $σ>m-\frac{N-2}N$. In particular, if $σ\le 0$ and $σ> m-\frac{…
We derive sharp estimates on the modulus of continuity for solutions of a large class of quasilinear isotropic parabolic equations on smooth metric measure spaces (with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary condition in case the boundary is non-empty). We also derive optimal lower bounds for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of a class of homogeneous quasilinear operators, which include non-variational operators. The main feature is that this class of operators have corresponding one-dimensional operators, which allow sharp comparisons with solutions of one-dimensional equations.
We consider two-dimensional waveguide with a rectangular obstacle symmetric about the axis of the waveguie. We study the behaviour of the Neumann eigenvalues located below the first threshold when the sides of the obstacle approach the edges of the waveguide. We show that only one of the eigenvalues converge to the first threshold, and the rate of convergence depends on whether the length of the obstacle divided by the width of the waveguide is integer or not.
In this note we investigate spectral properties of a periodic waveguide $Ω^\varepsilon$ ($\varepsilon$ is a small parameter) obtained from a straight strip by attaching an array of $\varepsilon$-periodically distributed identical protuberances having "room-and-passage" geometry. In the current work we consider the operator $\mathcal{A}^\varepsilon=-ρ^\varepsilonΔ_{Ω^\varepsilon}$, where $Δ_{Ω^\varepsilon}$ is the Neumann Laplacian in $Ω^\varepsilon$, the weight $ρ^\varepsilon$ is equal to $1$ everywhere except the union of the "rooms". We will prove that the spectrum of $\mathcal{A}^\varepsilo…
We consider the quasilinear parabolic-parabolic Keller-Segel system $$ u_t=\nabla \cdot (D(u)\nabla u) - \nabla \cdot (S(u)\nabla v), \qquad x\inΩ, \ t>0, v_t=Δv -v + u, x\inΩ, \ t>0, $$ under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\R^n$ with $n\ge 2$. It is proved that if $\frac{S(u)}{D(u)}\le cu^α$ with $α<\frac{2}{n}$ and some constant $c>0$ for all $u>1$ and some further technical conditions are fulfilled, then the classical solutions to the above system are uniformly-in-time bounded. This boundedness result is optimal according to a recent result by th…
We look for nonconstant, positive, radially nondecreasing solutions of the quasilinear equation $-Δ_p u+u^{p-1}=f(u)$ with $p>2$, in the unit ball $B$ of $\mathbb R^N$, subject to homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The assumptions on the nonlinearity $f$ are very mild and allow it to be possibly supercritical in the sense of Sobolev embeddings. The main tools used are the truncation method and a mountain pass-type argument. In the pure power case, i.e., $f(u)=u^{q-1}$, we detect the limit profile of the solutions of the problems as $q\to\infty$.
We consider a waveguide modeled by the Laplacian in a straight planar strip. The Dirichlet boundary condition is taken on the upper boundary, while on the lower boundary we impose periodically alternating Dirichlet and Neumann condition assuming the period of alternation to be small. We study the case when the homogenization gives the Neumann condition instead of the alternating ones. We establish the uniform resolvent convergence and the estimates for the rate of convergence. It is shown that the rate of the convergence can be improved by employing a special boundary corrector. Other results …
This article deals with an initial-boundary value problem for the coupled chemotaxis-haptotaxis system with nonlinear diffusion $$\left\{\begin{array}{ll} u_t=\nabla\cdot( D(u)\nabla u)-χ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla v)- ξ\nabla\cdot(u\nabla w)+μu(1- u-w), x\in Ω, t>0,\\ τv_t=Δv- v +u,\quad x\in Ω, t>0,\\ w_t=- vw,\quad x\in Ω, t>0, \end{array}\right.$$ under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^N(N\geq1)$, where $τ\in\{0,1\}$ and $χ$, $ξ$ and $μ$ are given nonnegative parameters. As far as we know, this situation provides the first {\bf rigorous} result…
In the present contribution, a feedback control law is studied for a quasilinear parabolic equation. First, we prove the well-posedness and some regularity results for the Cauchy-Neumann problem for this equation, modified by adding an extra term which is a multiple of the subdifferential of the distance function from a closed convex set of the space of square-integrable functions. Then, we consider convex sets of obstacle or double-obstacle type and prove rigorously the following property: if the factor in front of the feedback control is sufficiently large, then the solution reaches the conv…
