We classify positive solutions to a class of quasilinear equations with Neumann or Robin boundary conditions in convex domains. Our main tool is an integral formula involving the trace of some relevant quantities for the problem. Under a suitable condition on the nonlinearity, a relevant consequence of our results is that we can extend to weak solutions a celebrated result obtained for stable solutions by Casten and Holland and by Matano.
This paper deals with an existence and uniqueness result of the weak solution for a quasilinear elliptic PDE with nonlinear Robin boundary conditions. This problem is defined on a domain whose boundary is the union of two disjoint surfaces.where a Dirichelet condition is prescribed on the exterior boundary and a nonlinear Robin condition on the interior one.To achieve that, we use the theory of monotone operators
We prove Hölder continuity up to the boundary for solutions of quasi-linear degenerate elliptic problems in divergence form, not necessarily of variational type, on Lipschitz domains with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions. This includes the $p$-Laplace operator for all $p \in (1,\infty)$, but also operators with unbounded coefficients. Based on the elliptic result we show that the corresponding parabolic problem is well-posed in the space $C(\barΩ)$ provided that the coefficients satisfy a mild monotonicity condition. More precisely, we show that the realization of the elliptic operator in…
We provide a general approach to the classification results of stable solutions of (possibly nonlinear) elliptic problems with Robin conditions. The method is based on a geometric formula of Poincaré type, which is inspired by a classical work of Sternberg and Zumbrun and which gives an accurate description of the curvatures of the level sets of the stable solutions. {F}rom this, we show that the stable solutions of a quasilinear problem with Neumann data are necessarily constant. As a byproduct of this, we obtain an alternative proof of a celebrated result of Casten and Holland, and Matano. I…
We establish the multiplicity of positive solutions to a quasilinear Neumann problem in expanding balls and hemispheres with critical exponent in the boundary condition.
According to the Schwarz symmetry principle, every harmonic function vanishing on a real analytic curve has an odd continuation, while a harmonic function satisfying homogeneous Neumann condition has the even continuation. There are different generalizations of the Schwarz symmetry principle. Most of them are dealing with homogeneous conditions and the Dirichlet case. Using a technique of Dirichlet to Neumann and Robin to Neumann operators, we derive reflection formulae for nonhomogeneous Neumann and Robin conditions from a reflection formula subject to a nonhomogeneous Dirichlet condition.
In this paper, we prove almost global existence of solutions to certain quasilinear wave equations with quadratic nonlinearities in infinite homogeneous waveguides with Neumann boundary conditions. We use a Galerkin method to expand the Laplacian of the compact base in terms of its eigenfunctions. For those terms corresponding to zero modes, we obtain decay using analogs of estimates of Klainerman and Sideris. For the nonzero modes, estimates for Klein-Gordon equations, which provide better decay, are available.
We investigate the measure of nodal sets for Robin and Neumann eigenfunctions in the domain and on the boundary of the domain. A polynomial upper bound for the interior nodal sets is obtained for Robin eigenfunctions in the smooth domain. For the analytic domain, the sharp upper bounds of the interior nodal sets was shown for Robin eigenfunctions. More importantly, we obtain the sharp upper bounds for the boundary nodal sets of Neumann eigenfunctions with new quantitative global Carleman estimates. Furthermore, the sharp doubling inequality and vanishing order of Robin eigenfunctions on the bo…
In the first part of this article we deal with the existence of at least three non-trivial weak solutions of a nonlocal problem with nonstandard growth involving a nonlocal Robin type boundary condition. The second part of the article is devoted to study eigenvalues and minimizers of several nonlocal problems for the fractional $g-$Laplacian $(-Δ_g)^s$ with different boundary conditions, namely, Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin.
In this paper we study the shape of least-energy solutions to a singularly perturbed quasilinear problem with homogeneous Neumann boundary condition. We use an intrinsic variation method to show that at limit, the global maximum point of least-energy solutions goes to a point on the boundary faster than the linear rate and this point on the boundary approaches to a point where the mean curvature of the boundary achieves its maximum. We also give a complete proof of exponential decay of least-energy solutions.

In this paper, we develop some properties of the $a_{x,y}(.)$-Neumann derivative for the fractional $a_{x,y}(.)$-Laplacian operator. Therefore we prove the basic proprieties of the correspondent function spaces. In the second part of this paper, by means of Ekeland's variational principal and direct variational approach, we prove the existence of weak solutions for a nonlocal problem with nonhomogeneous Neumann and Robin boundary condition.
We consider a Neumann-Robin spectral problem in a perforated domain $\Omeps$. By homogenization techniques we find the suitable homogenized problem and we discuss the asymptotics of eigenpairs, as the size of the perforation tends to zero. Our results involve an approach based on Višík lemma and the Mosco convergence of eigenspaces. We prove that eigenpairs of our problem converge to eigenpairs of the homogenized problem with rate $\sqrt{\eps}$.
This work studies the initial-boundary value problem of the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the half-plane with initial data in Sobolev spaces and Neumann or Robin boundary data in appropriate Bourgain spaces. It establishes well-posedness in the sense of Hadamard by utilizing the explicit solution formula for the forced linear initial-boundary value problem obtained via Fokas's unified transform, and a contraction mapping argument.
We deal with the existence of weak solutions for a mixed Neumann-Robin-Cauchy problem. The existence results are based on global-in-time estimates of approximating solutions, and the passage to the limit exploits compactness techniques. We investigate explicit estimates for solutions of the parabolic equations with nonhomogeneous boundary conditions and distributional right hand sides. The parabolic equation is of divergence form with discontinuous coefficients. We consider a nonlinear condition on a part of the boundary that the power laws (and the Robin boundary condition) appear as particul…
Boundary value problems for second-order elliptic equations in divergence form, whose nonlinearity is governed by a convex function of non-necessarily power type, are considered. The global boundedness of their solutions is established under boundary conditions of Dirichlet, or Neumann, or Robin type. A decisive role in the results is played by optimal forms of Orlicz-Sobolev embeddings and boundary trace embeddings, which allow for critical growths of the coefficients.
In this paper we present some very recent results regarding existence, uniqueness, and multiplicity of solutions for quasilinear elliptic equations and systems, exhibiting both singular and convective reaction terms. The importance of boundary conditions (Dirichlet, Neumann, or Robin) is also discussed. Existence is achieved via sub-supersolution and truncation techniques, fixed point theory, nonlinear regularity, and set-valued analysis, while uniqueness and multiplicity are obtained by monotonicity arguments.
We consider a class of quasilinear operators on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ and address the question of optimizing the first eigenvalue with respect to the boundary conditions, which are of the Robin-type. We describe the optimizing boundary conditions and establish upper and lower bounds on the respective maximal and minimal eigenvalue.
In this paper, we investigate the critical points of solutions to the prescribed constant mean curvature equation with Neumann and Robin boundary conditions respectively in a bounded smooth convex domain $Ω$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n}(n\geq2)$. Firstly, we show the non-degeneracy and uniqueness of the critical points of solutions in a planar domain by using the local Chen & Huang's comparison technique and the geometric properties of approximate surfaces at the non-degenerate critical points. Secondly, we deduce the uniqueness and non-degeneracy of the critical points of solutions in a rotationally sy…
Uniqueness of the strong positive solution for a general quasilinear elliptic problem with variable exponents and homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions using a generalization of the $p(x)$-Díaz-Saa inequality
Following the previous work [1], we investigate the impact of damping on the oscillation of smooth solutions to some kind of quasilinear wave equations with Robin and Dirichlet boundary condition. By using generalized Riccati transformation and technical inequality method, we give some sufficient conditions to guarantee the oscillation of all smooth solutions. From the results, we conclude that positive damping can ``hold back" oscillation. At last, some examples are presented to confirm our main results.
We establish a spatial gradient maximum principle for classical solutions to the initial and Neumann boundary value problem of some quasilinear parabolic equations on smooth convex domains.
Bounded smooth solutions of the Dirichlet and Neumann problems for a wide variety of quasilinear parabolic equations, including graphical anisotropic mean curvature flows, have gradient bounded in terms of oscillation and elapsed time.
The second eigenvalue of the Robin Laplacian is shown to be maximal for the ball among domains of fixed volume, for negative values of the Robin parameter $α$ in the regime connecting the first nontrivial Neumann and Steklov eigenvalues, and even somewhat beyond the Steklov regime. The result is close to optimal, since the ball is not maximal when $α$ is sufficiently large negative, and the problem admits no maximiser when $α$ is positive.
In this paper we consider two elliptic problems. The first one is a Dirichlet problem while the second is Neumann. We extend all the known results concerning Landesman-Laser conditions by using the Mountain-Pass theorem with the Cerami $(PS)$ condition.
Consider the elliptic operator \[ A = - \sum_{k,l=1}^d \partial_k \, c_{kl} \, \partial_l + \sum_{k=1}^d a_k \, \partial_k - \sum_{k=1}^d \partial_k \, b_k + a_0 \] on a bounded connected open set $Ω\subset {\bf R}^d$ with Lipschitz boundary conditions, where $c_{kl} \in L_\infty(Ω,{\bf R})$ and $a_k,b_k,a_0 \in L_\infty(Ω,{\bf C})$, subject to Robin boundary conditions $\partial_νu + β\, {\rm Tr}\, u = 0$, where $β\in L_\infty(\partial Ω, {\bf C})$ is complex valued. Then we show that the kernel of the semigroup generated by $-A$ satisfies Gaussian estimates and Hölder Gaussian estimates. If …
The aim of this paper is analyzing existence, multiplicity, and regularity issues for the positive solutions of a Neumann boundary value problem of superlinear indefinite type related to the mean curvature operator with a sublinear potential at infinity.
Boundary value problems for a class of quasilinear elliptic equations, with an Orlicz type growth and L^1 right-hand side are considered. Both Dirichlet and Neumann problems are contemplated. Existence and uniqueness of generalized solutions, as well as their regularity, are established. The case of measure right-hand sides is also analyzed.
We consider a nonlinear eigenvalue problem under Robin boundary conditions in a domain with (possibly noncompact) smooth boundary. The problem involves a weighted p-Laplacian operator and subcritical nonlinearities satisfying Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz type conditions. Using Morse theory and a cohomological local splitting as in Degiovanni et al. [5], we prove the existence of a nontrivial weak solution for all (real) values of the eigenvalue parameter. Our result is new even in the semilinear case p = 2 and complements some recent results obtained in Autuori et al. [1].
The difference of the resolvents of two Laplacians on a half-space subject to Robin boundary conditions is studied. In general this difference is not compact, but it will be shown that it is compact and even belongs to some Schatten-von-Neumann class, if the coefficients in the boundary condition are sufficiently close to each other in a proper sense. In certain cases the resolvent difference is shown to belong even to the same Schatten-von Neumann class as it is known for the resolvent difference of two Robin Laplacians on a domain with a compact boundary.
We consider a perforated domain $Ω(ε)$ of $\mathbb{R}^2$ with a small hole of size $ε$ and we study the behavior of the solution of a mixed Neumann-Robin problem in $Ω(ε)$ as the size $ε$ of the small hole tends to $0$. In addition to the geometric degeneracy of the problem, the $ε$-dependent Robin condition may degenerate into a Neumann condition for $ε=0$ and the Robin datum may diverge to infinity. Our goal is to analyze the asymptotic behavior of the solutions to the problem as $ε$ tends to $0$ and understand how the boundary condition affects the behavior of the solutions when $ε$ is clos…
The narrow escape problem arises in deriving the asymptotic expansion of the solution of an inhomogeneous mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary value problem. In this paper, we mainly deal with narrow escape problem in a smooth domain connected to a long neck-Dendritic spine shape domain, which has a certain significance in biology. Since the special geometry of dendritic spine, we develop a new model for solving this narrow escape problem which is Neumann-Robin Boundary Model. This model transform spine singular domain to smooth spine head domain by inserting Robin boundary condition to the connec…
The second eigenvalue of the Robin Laplacian is shown to be maximal for the disk among simply-connected planar domains of fixed area when the Robin parameter is scaled by perimeter in the form $α/L(Ω)$, and $α$ lies between $-2π$ and $2π$. Corollaries include Szegő's sharp upper bound on the second eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian under area normalization, and Weinstock's inequality for the first nonzero Steklov eigenvalue for simply-connected domains of given perimeter. The first Robin eigenvalue is maximal, under the same conditions, for the degenerate rectangle. When area normalization o…
The paper is devoted to investigating long time behavior of smooth small data solutions to 3-D quasilinear wave equations outside of compact convex obstacles with Neumann boundary conditions.
We study the asymptotic behavior of the heat content on a compact Riemannian manifold with boundary and with singular specific heat and singular initial temperature distributions imposing Robin boundary conditions. Assuming the existence of a complete asymptotic series we determine the first three terms in that series. In addition to the general setting, the interval is studied in detail as are recursion relations among the coefficients and the relationship between the Dirichlet and Robin settings.
The classical local Neumann problem is well studied and solutions of this problem lie, in general, in a Sobolev space. In this work, we focus on nonlocal Neumann problems with measurable, nonnegative kernels, whose solutions require less regularity assumptions. For kernels of this kind we formulate and study the weak formulation of the nonlocal Neumann problem and we investigate a nonlocal counterpart of the Sobolev space $H^{1}$ as well as a resulting nonlocal trace space. We further establish, mainly for symmetric kernels, various existence results for the weak solution of the Neumann proble…
We investigate a quasilinear system consisting of the Westervelt equation from nonlinear acoustics and Pennes bioheat equation, subject to Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions. The concept of maximal regularity of type $L_p$-$L_q$ is applied to prove local and global well-posedness. Moreover, we show by a parameter trick that the solutions regularize instantaneously. Finally, we compute the equilibria of the system and investigate the long-time behaviour of solutions starting close to equilibria.
We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann maps given on an arbitrary open non-empty portion of the boundary of a smooth domain in $\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 2$, for classes of semilinear and quasilinear conductivity equations, determines the nonlinear conductivities uniquely. The main ingredient in the proof is a certain $L^1$-density result involving sums of products of gradients of harmonic functions which vanish on a closed proper subset of the boundary.
We consider the inverse problem of recovering an isotropic quasilinear conductivity from the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map when the conductivity depends on the solution and its gradient. We show that the conductivity can be recovered on an open subset of small gradients, hence extending a partial result to all real analytic conductivities. We also recover non-analytic conductivities with additional growth assumptions along large gradients. Moreover, the results hold for non-homogeneous conductivities if the non-homogeneous part is assumed known.
In this note we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the $s$-numbers of the resolvent difference of two generalized self-adjoint, maximal dissipative or maximal accumulative Robin Laplacians on a bounded domain $Ω$ with smooth boundary $\partialΩ$. For this we apply the recently introduced abstract notion of quasi boundary triples and Weyl functions from extension theory of symmetric operators together with Krein type resolvent formulae and well-known eigenvalue asymptotics of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on $\partialΩ$. It will be shown that the resolvent difference of two generalized Rob…
In this paper, we show that equality in Courant's nodal domain theorem can only be reached for a finite number of eigenvalues of the Neumann Laplacian, in the case of an open, bounded and connected set in R n with a C 1,1 boundary. This result is analogous to Pleijel's nodal domain theorem for the Dirichlet Laplacian (1956). It confirms, in all dimensions, a conjecture formulated by Pleijel, which had already been solved by I. Polterovich for a two-dimensional domain with a piecewise-analytic boundary (2009). We also show that the argument and the result extend to a class of Robin boundary con…
In this work we analyze the solutions of a $p$-Laplacian equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions set in a family of rough domains with a nonlinear term concentrated on the boundary. At the limit, we get a nonlinear boundary condition capturing the oscillatory geometry of the strip where the reactions take place.
We compare the solutions of two Poisson problems in a spherical shell with Robin boundary conditions, one with given data, and one where the data has been cap symmetrized. When the Robin parameters are nonnegative, we show that the solution to the symmetrized problem has larger (increasing) convex means. We prove similar results on balls. We also prove a comparison principle on generalized cylinders with mixed boundary conditions (Neumann and Robin).
We provide a counterexample of Wente's inequality in the context of Neumann boundary conditions. We will also show that Wente's estimates fails for general boundary conditions of Robin type.
In this paper we consider an inverse coefficients problem for a quasilinear elliptic equation of divergence form $\nabla\cdot\vec{C}(x,\nabla u(x))=0$, in a bounded smooth domain $Ω$. We assume that $\overrightarrow{C}(x,\vec{p})=γ(x)\vec{p}+\vec{b}(x)|\vec{p}|^2+\mathcal{O}(|\vec{p}|^3)$, by expanding $\overrightarrow{C}(x,\vec{p})$ around $\vec{p}=0$. We give a reconstruction method for $γ$ and $\vec{b}$ from the Dirichlet to Neumann map defined on $\partialΩ$.
In this paper we show uniqueness of the conductivity for the quasilinear Calderón's inverse problem. The nonlinear conductivity depends, in a nonlinear fashion, of the potential itself and its gradient. Under some structural assumptions on the direct problem, a real-valued conductivity allowing a small analytic continuation to the complex plane induces a unique Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DN) map. The method of proof considers some complex-valued, linear test functions based on a point of the boundary of the domain, and a linearization of the DN map placed at these particular set of solutions.
We show how nonlocal boundary conditions of Robin type can be encoded in the pointwise expression of the fractional operator. Notably, the fractional Laplacian of functions satisfying homogeneous nonlocal Neumann conditions can be expressed as a regional operator with a kernel having logarithmic behaviour at the boundary.
