We compare the solutions of two Poisson problems in a spherical shell with Robin boundary conditions, one with given data, and one where the data has been cap symmetrized. When the Robin parameters are nonnegative, we show that the solution to the symmetrized problem has larger (increasing) convex means. We prove similar results on balls. We also prove a comparison principle on generalized cylinders with mixed boundary conditions (Neumann and Robin).
It is shown that globally positive solutions of a linear second order parabolic partial differential equation on a bounded domain, with Robin boundary conditions, are unique up to multiplication by a positive constant.
In this paper we consider PDE's problems involving the anisotropic Laplacian operator, with Robin boundary conditions. By means of Talenti techniques, widely used in the last decades, we prove a comparison result between the solutions of the above-mentioned problems and the solutions of the symmetrized ones. As a consequence of these results, a Bossel-Daners type inequality can be shown in dimension 2.
This paper deals with an existence and uniqueness result of the weak solution for a quasilinear elliptic PDE with nonlinear Robin boundary conditions. This problem is defined on a domain whose boundary is the union of two disjoint surfaces.where a Dirichelet condition is prescribed on the exterior boundary and a nonlinear Robin condition on the interior one.To achieve that, we use the theory of monotone operators
The main objective of this paper is analysis of the initial-boundary value problems for the linear and semilinear time-fractional diffusion equations with a uniformly elliptic spatial differential operator of the second order and the Caputo type fractional derivative acting in the fractional Sobolev spaces. The boundary conditions are formulated in form of the homogeneous Neumann or Robin conditions. First we deal with the uniqueness and existence of the solutions to these initial-boundary value problems. Then we show a positivity property for the solutions and derive the corresponding compari…
Fluorescent Optical Tomography (FOT) is a new bio-medical imaging method with wider industrial applications. It is currently intensely researched since it is very precise and with no side effects for humans, as it uses non-ionising red and infrared light. Mathematically, FOT can be modelled as an inverse parameter identification problem, associated with a coupled elliptic system with Robin boundary conditions. Herein we utilise novel methods of Calculus of Variations in $L^\infty$ to lay the mathematical foundations of FOT which we pose as a PDE-constrained minimisation problem in $L^p$ and $L…
According to the Schwarz symmetry principle, every harmonic function vanishing on a real analytic curve has an odd continuation, while a harmonic function satisfying homogeneous Neumann condition has the even continuation. There are different generalizations of the Schwarz symmetry principle. Most of them are dealing with homogeneous conditions and the Dirichlet case. Using a technique of Dirichlet to Neumann and Robin to Neumann operators, we derive reflection formulae for nonhomogeneous Neumann and Robin conditions from a reflection formula subject to a nonhomogeneous Dirichlet condition.
In this paper, we study second-order and fourth-order elliptic problems which include not only a Poisson equation in the bulk but also an inhomogeneous Laplace--Beltrami equation on the boundary of the domain. The bulk and the surface PDE are coupled by a boundary condition that is either of Dirichlet or Robin type. We point out that both the Dirichlet and the Robin type boundary condition can be handled simultaneously through our formalism without having to change the framework. Moreover, we investigate the eigenvalue problems associated with these second-order and fourth-order elliptic syste…
We are concerned with fully nonlinear possibly degenerate elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) with superlinear terms with respect to $Du$. We prove several comparison principles among viscosity solutions which may be unbounded under some polynomial-type growth conditions. Our main result applies to PDEs with convex superlinear terms but we also obtain some results in nonconvex cases. Applications to monotone systems of PDEs are given.
We give full boundary extensions to two fundamental estimates in the theory of elliptic PDE, the weak Harnack inequality and the quantitative strong maximum principle, for uniformly elliptic equations in non-divergence form.
In this paper, we introduce a weak maximum principle-based approach to input-to-state stability (ISS) analysis for certain nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) with boundary disturbances. Based on the weak maximum principle, a classical result on the maximum estimate of solutions to linear parabolic PDEs has been extended, which enables the ISS analysis for certain {}{nonlinear} parabolic PDEs with boundary disturbances. To illustrate the application of this method, we establish ISS estimates for a linear reaction-diffusion PDE and a generalized Ginzburg-Landau equation with {}{mixe…
We consider a nonlinear Robin problem driven by the $p$-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential. The reaction term is of arbitrary growth and only conditions near zero are imposed. Using critical point theory together with suitable truncation and perturbation techniques and comparison principles, we show that the problem admits a sequence of distinct smooth nodal solutions converging to zero in $C^1(\overlineΩ)$.
This paper presents a maximum principle-based approach in the establishment of input-to-state stability (ISS) for a class of nonlinear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs) over higher dimensional domains with variable coefficients and different types of nonlinear boundary conditions. Technical development on ISS analysis of the considered systems is detailed, and an example of establishing ISS estimates for a nonlinear parabolic equation with, respectively, a nonlinear Robin boundary condition and a nonlinear Dirichlet boundary condition is provided to illustrate the application of …
We consider degenerated nonlinear PDE of elliptic type: $$ - \mathrm{div}(a(|x|)|\nabla w(x)|^{p-2} \nabla w(x)) + h(|x|,w(x),\langle\nabla w(x),\frac{x}{|x|}\rangle)=ϕ(w(x)), $$ where $x$ belongs to the ball in $\bf{R}^n$. Using the argument based on Opial-type inequalities, we investigate qualitative properties of their radial solutions, like e.g. maximum principles, monotonicity, as well as nonexistence of the nontrivial solutions.
We discuss two distinct minimality principles for general supremal first order functionals for maps and characterise them through solvability of associated second order PDE systems. Specifically, we consider Aronsson's standard notion of absolute minimisers and the concept of $\infty$-minimal maps introduced more recently by the second author. We prove that $C^1$ absolute minimisers characterise a divergence system with parameters probability measures and that $C^2$ $\infty$-minimal maps characterise Aronsson's PDE system. Since in the scalar case these different variational concepts coincide,…
We study the phenomenon of revivals for the linear Schrödinger and Airy equations over a finite interval, by considering several types of non-periodic boundary conditions. In contrast with the case of the linear Schrödinger equation examined recently (which we develop further), we prove that, remarkably, the Airy equation does not generally exhibit revivals even for boundary conditions very close to periodic. We also describe a new, weaker form of revival phenomena, present in the case of certain Robin-type boundary conditions for the linear Schrödinger equation. In this weak revival, the dich…
We introduce a notion of subunit vector field for fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations. We prove that an interior maximum of a viscosity subsolution of such an equation propagates along the trajectories of subunit vector fields. This implies strong maximum and minimum principles when the operator has a family of subunit vector fields satisfying the Hörmander condition. In particular these results hold for a large class of nonlinear subelliptic PDEs in Carnot groups. We prove also a strong comparison principle for degenerate elliptic equations that can be written in Hamilton-Jacobi-Bel…
We develop a new, unified approach to the following two classical questions on elliptic PDE: the strong maximum principle for equations with non-Lipschitz nonlinearities, and the at most exponential decay of solutions in the whole space or exterior domains. Our results apply to divergence and nondivergence operators with locally unbounded lower-order coefficients, in a number of situations where all previous results required bounded ingredients. Our approach, which allows for relatively simple and short proofs, is based on a (weak) Harnack inequality with optimal dependence of the constants in…
By applying Mountain Pass Lemma, Ekeland's and Ricceri's variational principle, Fountain Theorem, we prove the existence and multiplicity of solutions for the following Robin problem \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{array}{cc} -\text{div}\left( a(x)\left\vert \nabla u\right\vert ^{p(x)-2}\nabla u\right) =λb(x)\left\vert u\right\vert ^{q(x)-2}u, & x\in Ω\\ a(x)\left\vert \nabla u\right\vert ^{p(x)-2}\frac{\partial u}{\partial \upsilon }+β(x)\left\vert u\right\vert ^{p(x)-2}u=0, & x\in \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} under some appropriate conditions in the space $W_{a,b}^{1,p(.)…
The diffusion system with time-fractional order derivative is of great importance mathematically due to the nonlocal property of the fractional order derivative, which can be applied to model the physical phenomena with memory effects. We consider an initial-boundary value problem for the time-fractional diffusion equation with inhomogenous Robin boundary condition. Firstly, we show the unique existence of the weak/strong solution based on the eigenfunction expansions, which ensures the well-posedness of the direct problem. Then, we establish the Hopf lemma for time-fractional diffusion operat…
In this article we study a transport-diffusion equation in the framework of the stratified Lie groups. For this equation we will study the existence of the solutions, a maximum principle, a positivity principle and Hölder regularity.
We study thermal insulating of a bounded body $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$. Under a prescribed heat source $f\geq 0$, we consider a model of heat transfer between $Ω$ and the environment determined by convection; this corresponds, before insulation, to Robin boundary conditions. The body is then surrounded by a layer of insulating material of thickness of size $\varepsilon>0$, and whose conductivity is also proportional to $\varepsilon$. This corresponds to the case of a small amount of insulating material, with excellent insulating properties. We then compute the $Γ$-limit of the energy functional…

In this paper, we investigate an initial-boundary-value problem of a reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded domain with a Robin boundary condition and introduce some particular parameters to consider the non-zero flux on the boundary. This problem arises in the study of mosquito populations under the intervention of the population replacement method, where the boundary condition takes into account the inflow and outflow of individuals through the boundary. Using phase-plane analysis, the present paper studies the existence and properties of non-constant steady-state solutions depending on se…
Sparsity plays a central role in recent developments in signal processing, linear algebra, statistics, optimization, and other fields. In these developments, sparsity is promoted through the addition of an $L^1$ norm (or related quantity) as a constraint or penalty in a variational principle. We apply this approach to partial differential equations that come from a variational quantity, either by minimization (to obtain an elliptic PDE) or by gradient flow (to obtain a parabolic PDE). Also, we show that some PDEs can be rewritten in an $L^1$ form, such as the divisible sandpile problem and sig…
We derive a simple criterion that ensures uniqueness, Lipschitz stability and global convergence of Newton's method for the finite dimensional zero-finding problem of a continuously differentiable, pointwise convex and monotonic function. Our criterion merely requires to evaluate the directional derivative of the forward function at finitely many evaluation points and for finitely many directions. We then demonstrate that this result can be used to prove uniqueness, stability and global convergence for an inverse coefficient problem with finitely many measurements. We consider the problem of d…
We derive a comparison principle for a degenerate elliptic partial differential equation without boundary conditions which arises naturally in optimal learning strategies. Our argument is direct and exploits the degeneracy of the differential operator to construct (logarithmically) diverging barriers.
In this note we would like to present "an analysts' point of view" on the Nash-Kuiper theorem and in particular highlight the very close connection to some aspects of turbulence -- a paradigm example of a high-dimensional phenomenon.
A formal methodology for developing variational principles corresponding to a given nonlinear PDE system is discussed. The scheme is demonstrated in the context of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, systems of first-order conservation laws, and systems of Hamilton- Jacobi equations.
This paper concerns Hopf's boundary point lemma, in certain $C^{1,Dini}$-type domains, for a class of singular/degenerate PDE-s, including $p$-Laplacian. Using geometric properties of levels sets for harmonic functions in convex rings, we construct sub-solutions to our equations that play the role of a barrier from below. By comparison principle we then conclude Hopf's lemma.
By applying Ricceri's variational principle, we demonstrate the existence of solutions for the following Robin problem \begin{equation*}\left\{ \begin{array}{cc}-\func{div}\left( ω_{1}(x)\left\vert \nabla u\right\vert^{p(x)-2}\nabla u\right) =λω_{2}(x)f(x,u), & x\in Ω\\ ω_{1}(x)\left\vert \nabla u\right\vert ^{p(x)-2}\frac{\partial u}{ \partial \upsilon }+β(x)\left\vert u\right\vert ^{p(x)-2}u=0, & x\in \partial Ω, \end{array} \right. \end{equation*} in $W_{ω_{1},ω_{2}}^{1,p(.)}\left( Ω\right) $ under some appropriate conditions.
We show that two classically known properties of positive supersolutions of uniformly elliptic PDEs, the boundary point principle (Hopf lemma) and global integrability, can be quantified with respect to each other. We obtain an extension to the boundary of the de Giorgi-Moser weak Harnack inequality, optimal with respect to the norms involved, for equations in divergence form.
Initial-boundary value problems for second order fully nonlinear PDEs with Caputo time fractional derivatives of order less than one are considered in the framework of viscosity solution theory. Associated boundary conditions are Dirichlet and Neumann, and they are considered in the strong sense and the viscosity sense, respectively. By a comparison principle and Perron's method, unique existence for the Cauchy-Dirichlet and Cauchy-Neumann problems are proved.
This paper presents some sufficient conditions for the validity of the comparison principle for the weak solutions of non - cooperative weakly coupled systems of elliptic second-order PDEs.
We prove some Pólya-Szegö type inequalities which involve couples of functions and their rearrangements. Our inequalities reduce to the classical Pólya-Szegö principle when the two functions coincide. As an application, we give a different proof of a comparison result for solutions to Dirichlet boundary value problems for Laplacian equations proved by A. Alvino, G. Trombetti, J. I. Diaz and P. L. Lions.
The goal of this note is to have a systematic approach to generating isoperimetric inequalities from two concrete type of PDEs. We call these PDEs Bellman type because a totally analogous equations happen to rule many sharp estimates for singular integrals in harmonic analysis, and such estimates were obtained with the use of Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman PDE. We show how classical inequalities of Brascamp--Lieb, Prekopa--Leindler, Ehrhard are particular case of this scheme, which allows us to augment the stock of such inequalities. We approach the isoperimetric inequalities as a maximum (minimum)…
The Cahn-Hilliard reaction model, a nonlinear, evolutionary PDE, was introduced to model phase separation in lithium-ion batteries. Using Butler-Volmer kinetics for electrochemical consistency, this model allows lithium-ions to enter the domain via a nonlinear Robin-type boundary condition $\partial_νμ= R(c,μ)$ for the chemical potential $μ$, with $c$, the lithium-ion density. Importantly, $R$ depends exponentially on $μ$. Fixed point methods are applied to obtain existence of regular solutions of the Cahn-Hilliard reaction model in dimension $3,$ allowing for recovery of exponential boundary …
Let $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{N}$ ($N\geq1$) be a smooth bounded domain, $a\in C(\barΩ)$ a sign-changing function, and $0\leq q<1$. We investigate the Robin problem \[ \begin{cases} -Δu=a(x)u^{q} & \mbox{in $Ω$},\\ u\geq0 & \mbox{in $Ω$},\\ \partial_νu=αu & \mbox{on $\partial Ω$}, \end{cases} \] where $α\in\lbrack-\infty,\infty)$ and $ν$ is the unit outward normal to $\partialΩ$. Due to the lack of strong maximum principle structure, this problem may have \textit{dead core} solutions. However, for a large class of weights $a$ we recover a \textit{positivity} property when $q$ is close to $1$, which…
We prove comparison principles for nonlinear potential theories in euclidian spaces in a very straightforward manner from duality and monotonicity. We shall also show how to deduce comparison principles for nonlinear differential operators, a program seemingly different from the first. However, we shall marry these two points of view, for a wide variety of equations, under something called the correspondence principle. In potential theory one is given a constraint set F on the 2-jets of a function, and the boundary of F gives a differential equation. There are many differential operators, suit…
We study the Dirichlet problem for first order hyperbolic quasi-linear functional PDEs on a simply connected bounded domain of $\R^2$, where the domain has an interior outflow set and a mere inflow boundary. While the question of existence of a solution has already been answered in its predecessor, the present paper discusses the uniqueness and continuous dependence on the coefficients of the PDE. Under the assumption that the functional dependence is causal, we are able to derive a contraction principle which is the key to proof uniqueness and continuous dependence. Such a causal functional d…
We present a framework to solve the open problem of formulating the inverse scattering method (ISM) for an integrable PDE on a star-graph. The idea is to map the problem on the graph to a matrix initial-boundary value (IBV) problem and then to extend the unified method of Fokas to such a matrix IBV problem. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation is chosen to illustrate the method. The framework unifies all previously known examples which are recovered as particular cases. The case of general Robin conditions at the vertex is discussed: the notion of linearizable initial-boundary conditions is intr…
We study a class of dissipative PDE's perturbed by an unbounded kick force. Under some natural assumptions, the restrictions of solutions to integer times form a homogeneous Markov process. Assuming that the noise is rough with respect to the space variables and has a non-degenerate law, we prove that the system in question satisfies a large deviation principle in tau-topology. Under some additional hypotheses, we establish a Gallavotti-Cohen type symmetry for the rate function of an entropy production functional and the strict positivity and finiteness of the mean entropy production in the st…
We present a survey of recent results of the functional analysis allowing to solve PDEs in a large class of domains with irregular boundaries. We extend the previously introduced concept of admissible domains with a d-set boundary on the domains with the boundaries on which the measure is not necessarily Ahlfors regular d-measure. This gives a generalization of Rellich-Kondrachov theorem and the compactness of the trace operator, allowing to obtain, as for a regular classical case the unicity/existence of weak solutions of Poisson boundary valued problem with the Robin boundary condition and t…
We consider an integro-differential equation derived from a system of coupled parabolic PDE and an ODE which describes an European option pricing with liquidity shocks. We study the well-posedness and prove comparison principle for the corresponding initial value problem.
We announce a new result which shows that under either Dirichlet, Neumann, or Robin boundary conditions, the corners in a planar domain are a spectral invariant of the Laplacian. For the case of polygonal domains, we show how a locality principle, in the spirit of Kac's "principle of not feeling the boundary" can be used together with calculations of explicit model heat kernels to prove the result. In the process, we prove this locality principle for all three boundary conditions. Albeit previously known for Dirichlet boundary conditions, this appears to be new for Robin and Neumann boundary c…
