This paper presents some sufficient conditions for the validity of the comparison principle for the weak solutions of non - cooperative weakly coupled systems of elliptic second-order PDEs.
We investigate qualitative properties of positive singular solutions of some elliptic systems in bounded and unbounded domains. We deduce symmetry and monotonicity properties via the moving plane procedure. Moreover, in the unbounded case, we study some cooperative elliptic systems involving critical nonlinearities in $\mathbb{R}^n$.
In this article we study the symmetry breaking phenomenon of solutions of noncooperative elliptic systems. We apply the degree for G-invariant strongly indefinite functionals to obtain simultaneously a symmetry breaking and a global bifurcation phenomenon.
In this paper we prove symmetry results for classical solutions of nonlinear cooperative elliptic systems in a ball or in annulus in $\RN$, $N \geq 2 $. More precisely we prove that solutions having Morse index $j \leq N $ are foliated Schwarz symmetric if the nonlinearity is convex and a full coupling condition is satisfied along the solution.
We obtain symmetry results for solutions of an elliptic system of equation possessing a cooperative structure. The domain in which the problem is set may possess "holes" or "small vacancies" (measured in terms of capacity) along which the solution may diverge. The method of proof relies on the moving plane technique, which needs to be suitably adapted here to take care of the complications arising from the vacancies in the domain and the analytic structure of the elliptic system.
In this paper we prove symmetry results for classical solutions of nonlinear cooperative elliptic systems in a ball or in annulus in R^N, with N greather or equal than 2. More precisely we prove that solutions having Morse index j smaller than N are foliated Schwarz symmetric if the nonlinearity has a convex derivative and a full coupling condition is satisfied along the solution.
In this paper we prove symmetry results for classical solutions of semilinear cooperative elliptic systems in R^N, or in the exterior of a ball. We consider the case of fully coupled systems and nonlinearities which are either convex or have a convex derivative. The solutions are shown to be foliated Schwarz symmetric if a bound on their Morse index holds. As a consequence of the symmetry results we also obtain some nonexistence theorems.
We study here the behavior of the solutions to a $2\times 2$ semi-linear cooperative system involving Schr\" odinger operators (considered in its variational form): $$LU:=(-Δ+ q(x))U = AU+μU + F(x,U) \quad{\rm in}\ \mathbb{R}^N$$ $$U(x)_{|x|\rightarrow \infty} \rightarrow 0$$ where $q$ is a continuous positive potential tending to $+\infty$ at infinity; $μ$ is a real parameter varying near the principal eigenvalue of the system; $U$ is a column vector with components $u_1$ and $u_2$ and $A$ is a square cooperative matrix with constant coefficient. $F$ is a column vector with components $f_1$ a…
The purpose of this paper is to study properties of continua (closed connected sets) of nontrivial solutions of non-cooperative elliptic systems considered on geodesic balls in $S^n$. In particular, we have shown that if the geodesic ball is a hemisphere, then these continua are unbounded. It is also shown that the phenomenon of global symmetry-breaking bifurcation of such solutions occurs. Since the problem is variational and SO(n)-symmetric, we apply the techniques of equivariant bifurcation theory to prove the main results of this article. As the topological tool we use the degree theory fo…
In this paper we deal with the cubic Schrödinger system $ -Δu_i = \sum_{j=1}^n β_{ij}u_j^2 u_i$, $u_1,\dots,u_n \geq 0$ in $\mathbb{R}^N (N\leq 3)$, where $β=(β_{i,j})_{ij}$ is a symmetric matrix with real coefficients and $β_{ii}\geq 0$ for every $i=1,\ldots,n$. We analyse the existence and nonexistence of nontrivial solutions in connection with the properties of the matrix $β$, and provide a complete characterization in dimensions $N=1,2$. Extensions to more general power-type nonlinearities are given.
In this article, we prove existence results of positive solutions for the following nonlinear elliptic problem with gradient terms: \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{\begin{array}{l@{\quad }l} (-Δ)^αu=f(x,u,v,\nabla u, \nabla v) &{\rm in}\,\,Ω,\\ (-Δ)^αv=g(x,u,v,\nabla u, \nabla v) &{\rm in}\,\,Ω,\\ u=v=0\,\,&{\rm in}\,\,\R^N\setminusΩ, \end{array} \right. \end{eqnarray*} where $(-Δ)^α$ denotes the fractional Laplacian and $ Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $ \R^N $. It shown that under some assumptions on $ f $ and $ g $, the problem has at least one positive solution $(u,v)$. Our proof is based on th…
Inspired by so many possible applications of this class of problems, we seek solution for non-cooperative elliptic systems of two Schrodinger equations. General conditions are assumed under the potentials, which produces convenient spectral properties on the elliptic operator concerned, hence the non-cooperation characterizes it as a strongly indefinite problem. An Abstract Linking Theorem developed previously by the first two authors is the main tool, since variational approach is applied. Furthermore, super and asymptotically quadratic nonlinearities are considered.
We study the elliptic system \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -Δu_1 - κ_1u_1 = μ_1|u_1|^{p-2}u_1 + λα|u_1|^{α-2}|u_2|^βu_1, \\ -Δu_2 - κ_2u_2 = μ_2|u_2|^{p-2}u_2 + λβ|u_1|^α|u_2|^{β-2}u_2, \\ u_1,u_2\in D^{1,2}_0(Ω), \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq 3$, $κ_1,κ_2\in\mathbb{R}$, $μ_1,μ_2,λ>0$, $α,β>1$, and $α+ β= p\le 2^*:=\frac{2N}{N-2}$. For $p\in (2,2^*)$ we establish the existence of a ground state and of a prescribed number of fully nontrivial solutions to this system for $λ$ sufficiently large. If $p=2^*$ and $κ_1,κ_2>0$ we establish the ex…
Liouville theorems for scaling invariant nonlinear elliptic systems (saying that the system does not possess nontrivial entire solutions) guarantee a priori estimates of solutions of related, more general systems. Assume that $p=2q+3>1$ is Sobolev subritical, $n\le3$ and $β\in{\mathbb R}$. We first prove a Liouville theorem for the system $$\left.\begin{aligned} -Δu &=|u|^{2q+2}u+β|v|^{q+2}|u|^q u, \\ -Δv &=|v|^{2q+2}v+β|u|^{q+2}|v|^q v, \end{aligned}\ \right\} \quad\hbox{in}\quad {\mathbb R}^n,$$ in the class of radial functions $(u,v)$ such that the number of nodal domains of $u,v,u-v,u+v$ i…
We are concerned with the sign of the solutions of non-cooperative systems when the parameter varies near a principal eigenvalue of the system. With this aim we give precise estimates of the validity interval for the Antimaximum Principle for an equation and an example. We apply these results to a non-cooperative system. Finally a counterexample shows that our hypotheses are necessary. The Maximum Principle remains true only for a restricted positive cone.
This paper classifies the set of supersolutions of a general class of periodic-parabolic problems in the presence of a positive supersolution. From this result we characterize the positivity of the underlying resolvent operator through the positivity of the associated principal eigenvalue and the existence of a positive strict supersolution. Lastly, this (scalar) characterization is used to characterize the strong maximum principle for a class of periodic-parabolic systems of cooperative type under arbitrary boundary conditions of mixed type.
We consider general linear non-degenerate weakly-coupled cooperative elliptic systems and study certain monotonicity properties of the generalized principal eigenvalue in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with respect to the potential. It is shown that monotonicity on the right is equivalent to the recurrence property of the twisted operator which is, in turn, equivalent to the minimal growth property at infinity of the principal eigenfunctions. The strict monotonicity property of the principal eigenvalue is shown to be equivalent with the exponential stability of the twisted operators. An equivalence between th…
In this paper we study a parametrised non-cooperative symmetric semi-linear elliptic system on a sphere. Assuming that there exist critical orbits of the potential, we study the structure of the sets of solutions of the system. In particular, using the equivariant Rabinowitz Alternative we formulate sufficient conditions for a bifurcation of unbounded sets of solutions.
We study a multi-objective variational problem of Herglotz' type with cooperative linear coupling. We established the associated Euler-Lagrange equations and the characteristic system for cooperative weakly coupled systems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. We also established the relation of the value functions of this variational problem with the viscosity solutions of cooperative weakly coupled systems of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Comparing to the previous work in stochastic frame, this approach affords a pure deterministic explanation of this problem under more general conditions. We also show…
We prove a comparison principle for weak solutions of elliptic quasilinear equations in divergence form whose ellipticity constants degenerate at every point where $\nabla u \in K$, where $K\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ is a Borel set containing the origin.
We give full boundary extensions to two fundamental estimates in the theory of elliptic PDE, the weak Harnack inequality and the quantitative strong maximum principle, for uniformly elliptic equations in non-divergence form.
In this paper, we prove a maximum principle for the $p$-Laplacian with a sign-changing weight. As an application of this maximum principle, we study the existence of one-sign solutions for a class of quasilinear elliptic problems.
In this paper we develop a detailed study on maximum and comparison principles for a degenerate elliptic system. Explicit lower bounds for principal eigenvalues of this system in terms of the measure of $Ω$ are also proved.
In this paper, we obtain the strong comparison principle and Hopf Lemma for locally Lipschitz viscosity solutions to a class of nonlinear degenerate elliptic operators of the form $\nabla^2 ψ+ L(x,\nabla ψ)$, including the conformal hessian operator.
We prove the validity of maximum principles for a class of fully nonlinear operators on unbounded subdomains $Ω\subset \mathbb R^n$ of cylindrical type. The main structural assumption is the uniform ellipticity of the operator along the bounded directions of $Ω$, with possible degeneracy along the unbounded directions.
In this note we consider boundary point principles for partial differential inequalities of elliptic type. Firstly, we highlight the difference between conditions required to establish classical strong maximum principles and classical boundary point lemmas for second order linear elliptic partial differential inequalities. We highlight this difference by introducing a singular set in the domain where the coefficients of the partial differential inequality need not be defined, and in a neighborhood of which, can blow-up. Secondly, as a consequence, we establish a comparison-type boundary point …
In this paper, we prove the N-barrier maximum principle, which extends the result in [5] from linear diffusion equations to nonlinear diffusion equations, for a wide class of degenerate elliptic systems of porous medium type. The N-barrier maximum principle provides a priori upper and lower bounds of the solutions to the above-mentioned degenerate nonlinear diffusion equations including the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model as a special case. As an application of the N-barrier maximum principle to a coexistence problem in ecology, we show the nonexistence of waves in a three-species degenerate…
We consider the comparison principle for semicontinuous viscosity sub- and supersolutions of second order elliptic equations on the form $F(D^2 w,x) = 0$. A structural condition on the operator is presented that seems to unify the different existing theories. A new result is obtained and the proofs of the classical results are simplified.
We prove extensions of the estimates of Aleksandrov and Bakel$'$man for linear elliptic operators in Euclidean space $\Bbb{R}^{\it n}$ to inhomogeneous terms in $L^q$ spaces for $q < n$. Our estimates depend on restrictions on the ellipticity of the operators determined by certain subcones of the positive cone. We also consider some applications to local pointwise and $L^2$ estimates.
We start in this paper a systematic study of the superpositions of elliptic operators with different orders, mixing classical and fractional scenarios. For concreteness, we focus on the sum of the Laplacian and the fractional Laplacian, and we provide structural results, including existence, maximum principles (both for weak and classical solutions), interior Sobolev regularity and boundary regularity of Lipschitz type.
Maximum Principles on unbounded domains play a crucial rôle in several problems related to linear second-order PDEs of elliptic and parabolic type. In this paper we consider a class of sub-elliptic operators $\mathcal{L}$ in $\mathbb{R}^N$ and we establish some criteria for an unbounded open set to be a Maximum Principle set for $\mathcal{L}$. We extend some classical results related to the Laplacian (by Deny, Hayman and Kennedy) and to the sub-Laplacians on stratified Lie groups (by Bonfiglioli and the second-named author).
We are concerned with fully nonlinear possibly degenerate elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) with superlinear terms with respect to $Du$. We prove several comparison principles among viscosity solutions which may be unbounded under some polynomial-type growth conditions. Our main result applies to PDEs with convex superlinear terms but we also obtain some results in nonconvex cases. Applications to monotone systems of PDEs are given.
We prove results on solvability of nonlinear elliptic partial differential systems of principle type of second order. They are consequences of existence of non-radial solutions for nonlinear partial differential systems of Poisson type. As applications to geometry, we prove the exsitence of local harmonic maps with given tangent plane at a point between any Riemannan manifolds. More generally geometric objects defined by Beltrami-Laplace always exist locally.
We introduce the so-called $d$-concavity, $d \geq 0,$ and prove that the nonsymmetric Monge-Ampère type function of matrix variable is concave in an appropriate unbounded and convex set. We prove also the comparison principle for nonsymmetric Monge-Ampère type equations in the case when they are so-called $δ$-elliptic with respect to compared functions with $0 \leq δ<1$.
In this paper we prove unique continuation principles for some systems of elliptic partial differential equations satisfying a suitable superlinearity condition. As an application, we obtain nonexistence of nontrivial (not necessarily positive) radial solutions for the Lane-Emden system posed in a ball, in the critical and supercritical regimes. Some of our results also apply to general fully nonlinear operators, such as Pucci's extremal operators, being new even for scalar equations.
We introduce a notion of subunit vector field for fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equations. We prove that an interior maximum of a viscosity subsolution of such an equation propagates along the trajectories of subunit vector fields. This implies strong maximum and minimum principles when the operator has a family of subunit vector fields satisfying the Hörmander condition. In particular these results hold for a large class of nonlinear subelliptic PDEs in Carnot groups. We prove also a strong comparison principle for degenerate elliptic equations that can be written in Hamilton-Jacobi-Bel…
We consider degenerated nonlinear PDE of elliptic type: $$ - \mathrm{div}(a(|x|)|\nabla w(x)|^{p-2} \nabla w(x)) + h(|x|,w(x),\langle\nabla w(x),\frac{x}{|x|}\rangle)=ϕ(w(x)), $$ where $x$ belongs to the ball in $\bf{R}^n$. Using the argument based on Opial-type inequalities, we investigate qualitative properties of their radial solutions, like e.g. maximum principles, monotonicity, as well as nonexistence of the nontrivial solutions.
We introduce a new method for proving the nonexistence of positive supersolutions of elliptic inequalities in unbounded domains of $\mathbb{R}^n$. The simplicity and robustness of our maximum principle-based argument provides for its applicability to many elliptic inequalities and systems, including quasilinear operators such as the $p$-Laplacian, and nondivergence form fully nonlinear operators such as Bellman-Isaacs operators. Our method gives new and optimal results in terms of the nonlinear functions appearing in the inequalities, and applies to inequalities holding in the whole space as w…
We establish a comparison principle providing accurate upper bounds for the modulus of vector valued minimizers of an energy functional, associated when the potential is smooth, to elliptic gradient systems. Our assumptions are very mild: we assume that the potential is lower semicontinuous, and satisfies a monotonicity condition in a neighborhood of its minimum. As a consequence, we give a sufficient condition for the existence of dead core regions, where the minimizer is equal to one of the minima of the potential.
A classical counterexample due to E. De Giorgi, shows that the weak maximum principle does not remain true for general linear elliptic differential systems. After that, there are some efforts to establish the weak maximum principle for special elliptic differential systems, but the existing works are addressing only the cases of weakly coupled systems, or almost-diagonal systems, or even some systems coupling in various lower order terms. In this paper, by contrast, we present maximum modulus estimates for weak solutions to two classes of coupled linear elliptic differential systems with diffe…
We investigate positivity sets of nonnegative supersolutions of the fully nonlinear elliptic equations $F(x,u,Du,D^2u)=0$ in $Ω$, where $Ω$ is an open subset of ${\mathbb R}^N$, and the validity of the strong maximum principle for $F(x,u,Du,D^2u)=f$ in $Ω$, with $f\in\text{C}(Ω)$ being nonpositive. We obtain geometric characterizations of positivity sets $\left\{x\inΩ\,:\, u(x)>0\right\}$ of nonnegative supersolutions $u$ and establish the strong maximum principle under some geometric assumption on the set $\left\{x\inΩ\,:\, f(x)=0\right\}$.
In this paper, we establish various maximum principles and develop the method of moving planes and the sliding method (on general unbounded domains) for equations involving the uniformly elliptic nonlocal Bellman operator. As a consequence, we derive multiple applications of these maximum principles and the moving planes method. For instance, we prove symmetry, monotonicity and uniqueness results and asymptotic properties for solutions to various equations involving the uniformly elliptic nonlocal Bellman operator in bounded domains, unbounded domains, epigraph or $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. In particul…
We study the fully nonlinear elliptic equation $F(D^2u,Du,u,x) = f$ in a smooth bounded domain $Ω$, under the assumption the nonlinearity $F$ is uniformly elliptic and positively homogeneous. Recently, it has been shown that such operators have two principal "half" eigenvalues, and that the corresponding Dirichlet problem possesses solutions, if both of the principal eigenvalues are positive. In this paper, we prove the existence of solutions of the Dirichlet problem if both principal eigenvalues are negative, provided the "second" eigenvalue is positive, and generalize the anti-maximum princi…
Paper dedicated to qualitative study of the solution of the Zaremba type problem in Lipschitz domain with respect to the elliptic equation in non-divergent form. Main result is Landis type Growth Lemma in spherical layer for Mixed Boundary Value Problem in the class of "admissible domain". Based on the Growth Lemma Phragmén-Lindelöf theorem is proved at junction point of Dirichlet boundary and boundary over which derivative in non-tangential direction is defined.
We characterize the validity of the Maximum Principle in bounded domains for fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic operators in terms of the sign of a suitably defined generalized principal eigenvalue. Here, maximum principle refers to the non-positivity of viscosity subsolutions of the Dirichlet problem. This characterization is derived in terms of a new notion of generalized principal eigenvalue, which is needed because of the possible degeneracy of the operator, admitted in full generality. We further discuss the relations between this notion and other natural generalizations of the classical…
We use an iteration procedure propped up by a a classical form of the maximum principle to show the existence of solutions to a nonlinear Poisson equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. These methods can be applied to the case of special unbounded domains, and can be adapted to show the existence of nontrivial solutions to systems, which we show via some examples.
We give a simple proof of the strong maximum principle for viscosity subsolutions of fully nonlinear elliptic PDEs on the form $$ F(x,u,Du,D^2u) = 0 $$ under suitable structure conditions on the equation allowing for non-Lipschitz growth in the gradient terms. In case of smooth boundaries, we also prove the Hopf lemma, the boundary Harnack inequality and that positive viscosity solutions vanishing on a portion of the boundary are comparable with the distance function near the boundary. Our results apply to weak solutions of an eigenvalue problem for the variable exponent $p$-Laplacian.
By employing the N-barrier method developed in the paper, we establish a new N-barrier maximum principle for diffusive Lotka-Volterra systems of two competing species. As an application of this maximum principle, we show under certain conditions, the existence and nonexistence of traveling waves solutions for systems of three competing species. In addition, new $(1,0,0)$-$(u^{\ast},v^{\ast},0)$ waves are given in terms of the tanh function provided that the parameters satisfy certain conditions.
We present some comparison results for solutions to certain non local elliptic and parabolic problems that involve the fractional Laplacian operator and mixed boundary conditions, given by a zero Dirichlet datum on part of the complementary of the domain and zero Neumann data on the rest. These results represent a non local generalization of a Hopf's lemma for elliptic and parabolic problems with mixed conditions. In particular we prove the non local version of the results obtained by J. Dávila and J. Dávila-L. Dupaigne for the classical case respectively.
