In this paper we study a parametrised non-cooperative symmetric semi-linear elliptic system on a sphere. Assuming that there exist critical orbits of the potential, we study the structure of the sets of solutions of the system. In particular, using the equivariant Rabinowitz Alternative we formulate sufficient conditions for a bifurcation of unbounded sets of solutions.
In this paper we provide a simple proof of a Carleman estimate for a second order elliptic operator $P$ with Lipschitz leading coefficients. We apply such a Carleman estimate to derive a three sphere inequality for solutions to equation $Pu=0$
We prove the concavity of classical solutions to a wide class of degenerate elliptic differential equations on strictly convex domains of the unit sphere. The proof employs a suitable two-point maximum principle, a technique which originates in works of Korevaar, Kawohl and Kennington for equations on Euclidean domains. We emphasize that no differentiability of the differential operator is needed, but only some monotonicity and concavity properties.
We show that any general semilinear elliptic problem with Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions in an annulus A in R^2m ;m >1, invariant by the action of a certain symmetry group can be reduced to a nonhomogenous similar problem in an annulus D in R^(m+1), invariant by another related symmetry. We apply this result to prove the existence of positive and sign changing solutions of a singularly perturbed elliptic problem in A which concentrate on one or two (m-1) dimensional spheres. We also prove that the Morse indices of these solutions tend to infinity as the parameter of concentration ten…
We prove a sharp three sphere inequality for solutions to third order perturbations of a product of two second order elliptic operators with real coefficients. Then we derive various kinds of quantitative estimates of unique continuation for the anisotropic plate equation. Among these, we prove a stability estimate for the Cauchy problem for such an equation and we illustrate some applications to the size estimates of an unknown inclusion made of different material that might be present in the plate. The paper is self-contained and the Carleman estimate, from which the sharp three sphere inequ…
Let $A=\{x\in \R^{2m} : 0< a< |x| <b\}$ be an annulus. Consider the following singularly perturbed elliptic problem on $A$ \begin{equation} \begin{array}{lll} -\eps^2{\De u} + |x|^ηu = |x|^ηu^p, &\mbox{\qquad in} A \notag u>0 &\mbox{\qquad in} A u = 0 &\mbox{\qquad on} \partial A \end{array} %\label{a1} \end{equation} $1<p<2^*-1$. We shall prove the existence of a positive solution $u_\eps$ which concentrates on two different orthogonal spheres of dimension $(m-1)$ as $\eps\to 0$. We achieve this by studying a reduced problem on an annular domain in $\R^{m+1}$ and analyzing the profile of a tw…
We consider some nonlinear elliptic equations on ${\mathbb R}^n$ and ${\mathbb S}^n$. By the method of moving spheres, we obtain the symmetry properties of solutions and some nonexistence results. Moreover, by the global bifurcation theory, we obtain a multiplicity result for a class of semilinear elliptic equations.
In this work we systematically derive the governing equations of supersonic conical flow by projecting the 3D Euler equations onto the unit sphere. These equations result from taking the assumption of conical invariance on the 3D flow field. Under this assumption, the compressible Euler equations reduce to a system defined on the surface of the unit sphere. This compressible flow problem has been successfully used to study steady supersonic flow past cones of arbitrary cross section by reducing the number of spatial dimensions from 3 down to 2 while still capturing many of the relevant 3D effe…
Given a Riemannian compact manifold (M,g) of dimension n>4, we have proven in [1] under some conditions that the equation : Pg(u) = Bu +Au2+Cu (1) where Pg is the GJMS-operator, n = dim(M) > 2k, A, B and C are smooth positive functions on M, p > 1 and 2] denotes the critical Sobolev admits twodistinct positive solutions. The proof of this result is essentially based on the given smooth function ' > 0 with norm k'kPg = 1 fulfilling some conditions ( see Theorem 3 in [1]). In this note we construct an example of such function on the unit standard sphere (Sn; h). Con- sequently the conditions of …
We consider the supercritical Lane-Emden problem $$(P_\eps)\qquad -Δv= |v|^{p_\eps-1} v \ \hbox{in}\ \mathcal{A} ,\quad u=0\ \hbox{on}\ \partial\mathcal{A} $$ where $\mathcal A$ is an annulus in $\rr^{2m},$ $m\ge2$ and $p_\eps={(m+1)+2\over(m+1)-2}-\eps$, $\eps>0.$ We prove the existence of positive and sign changing solutions of $(P_\eps)$ concentrating and blowing-up, as $\eps\to0$, on $(m-1)-$dimensional spheres. Using a reduction method (see Ruf-Srikanth (2010) J. Eur. Math. Soc. and Pacella-Srikanth (2012) arXiv:1210.0782)we transform problem $(P_\eps)$ into a nonhomogeneous problem in an…
The goal of this paper is to study how the symmetry of the spherical domain influences solutions of elliptic equations on such domain. The method pursued is a variant of the moving plane method, discovered by Alexandrov (1962) and used for differential equations by Gidas, Ni and Nirenberg (1979). We obtain a reflectional symmetry result with respect to maxima and minima of solutions.
This work contains the derivation and type analysis of the conical Ideal Magnetohydrodynamic equations. The 3D Ideal MHD equations with Powell source terms, subject to the assumption that the solution is conically invariant, are projected onto a unit sphere using tools from tensor calculus. Conical flows provide valuable insight into supersonic and hypersonic flow past bodies, but are simpler to analyze and solve numerically. Previously, work has been done on conical inviscid flows governed by the Euler equations with great success. It is known that some flight regimes involve flows of ionized…
Given an isoparametric function $f$ on the $n$-dimensional round sphere, we consider functions of the form $u=w\circ f$ to reduce the semilinear elliptic problem \[ -Δ_{g_0}u+λu=λ | u\ | ^{p-1}u\qquad\text{ on }\mathbb{S}^n \] with $λ>0$ and $1<p$, into a singular ODE in $[0,π]$ of the form $w'' + \frac{h(r)}{\sin r} w' + \fracλ{\ell^2}\ (| w|^{p-1}w - w\ )=0$, where $h$ is an strictly decreasing function having exactly one zero in this interval and $\ell$ is a geometric constant. Using a double shooting method, together with a result for oscillating solutions to this kind of ODE, we obtain a …
Let $M$ be a simply connected homogeneous three-manifold with isometry group of dimension $4$, and let $Σ$ be any compact surface of genus zero immersed in $M$ whose mean, extrinsic and Gauss curvatures satisfy a smooth elliptic relation $Φ(H,K_e,K)=0$. In this paper we prove that $Σ$ is a sphere of revolution, provided that the unique inextendible rotational surface $S$ in $M$ that satisfies this equation and touches its rotation axis orthogonally has bounded second fundamental form. In particular, we prove that: (i) any elliptic Weingarten sphere immersed in $\mathbb{H}^2\times \mathbb{R}$ i…
We present a new proof of the sphere covering inequality in the spirit of comparison geometry, and as a byproduct we find another sphere covering inequality which can be viewed as the dual of the original one. We also prove sphere covering inequalities on surfaces satisfying general isoperimetric inequalities, and discuss their applications to elliptic equations with exponential nonlinearities in dimension two. The approach in this paper extends, improves, and unifies several inequalities about solutions of elliptic equations with exponential nonlinearities.
Our main aim is to present a geometrically meaningful formula for the fundamental solutions to a second order sub-elliptic differential equation and to the heat equation associated with a sub-elliptic operator in the sub-Riemannian geometry on the unit sphere $\mathbb S^3$. Our method is based on the Hamiltonian approach, where the corresponding Hamitonian system is solved with mixed boundary conditions. A closed form of the modified action is given. It is a sub-Riemannian invariant and plays the role of a distance on $\mathbb S^3$.
This paper is devoted to sharp interpolation inequalities on the sphere and their proof using flows. The method explains some rigidity results and proves uniqueness in related semilinear elliptic equations. Nonlinear flows allow to cover the interval of exponents ranging from Poincaré to Sobolev inequality, while an intriguing limitation (an upper bound on the exponent) appears in the carré du champ method based on the heat flow. We investigate this limitation, describe a counter-example for exponents which are above the bound, and obtain improvements below.
In this paper we study the concentration profile of various kind of symmetric solutions of some semilinear elliptic problems arising in astrophysics and in diffusion phenomena. Using a reduction method we prove that doubly symmetric positive solutions in a $2m$-dimensional ball must concentrate and blow up on $(m-1)$-spheres as the concentration parameter tends to infinity. We also consider axially symmetric positive solutions in a ball in $\mathbb{R}^N$, $N \geq 3$, and show that concentration and blow up occur on two antipodal points, as the concentration parameter tends to infinity.
We consider the problem of minimizing variational integrals defined on \cc{nonlinear} Sobolev spaces of competitors taking values into the sphere. The main novelty is that the underlying energy features a non-uniformly elliptic integrand exhibiting different polynomial growth conditions and no homogeneity. We develop a few intrinsic methods aimed at proving partial regularity of minima and providing techniques for treating larger classes of similar constrained non-uniformly elliptic variational problems. In order to give estimates for the singular sets we use a general family of Hausdorff type…
We compute temperate fundamental solutions of homogeneous differential operators with real-principal type symbols. Via analytic continuation of meromorphic distributions, fundamental solutions for these non-elliptic operators can be constructed in terms of radial averages and invariant distributions on the unit sphere.

We study the problem% \[ -Δv+λv=| v| ^{p-2}v\text{ in }Ω,\text{\qquad}v=0\text{ on $\partialΩ$},\text{ }% \] for $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ and supercritical exponents $p,$ in domains of the form% \[ Ω:=\{(y,z)\in\mathbb{R}^{N-m-1}\times\mathbb{R}^{m+1}:(y,| z| )\inΘ\}, \] where $m\geq1,$ $N-m\geq3,$ and $Θ$ is a bounded domain in $\mathbb{R}% ^{N-m}$ whose closure is contained in $\mathbb{R}^{N-m-1}\times(0,\infty)$. Under some symmetry assumptions on $Θ$, we show that this problem has infinitely many solutions for every $λ$ in an interval which contains $[0,\infty)$ and $p>2$ up to some number which i…
We prove new existence criteria relevant for the non-linear elliptic PDE of the form $Δ_{S^2} u=C-he^{u}$, considered on a two dimensional sphere $S^2$, in the parameter regime $2\leq C<4$. We apply this result, as well as several previously known results valid when $C<2$, to discuss existence of solutions of a particular PDE modelling ocean surface currents.
In this paper we prove non-existence and classification results for elliptic fully nonlinear elliptic degenerate conformal equations on certain subdomains of the sphere with prescribed constant mean curvature along its boundary. We also consider non-degenerate equations. Such subdomains are the hemisphere (or a geodesic ball in $\mathbb{S}^m$), punctured balls and annular domains. Our results extend those of Escobar in when $m\geq 3$, and Hang-Wang and Jimenez in when $m=2$.
We study the real Monge-Ampère equation in two and three dimensions, both from the point of view of the SYZ conjecture, where solutions give rise to semi-flat Calabi-Yau's and in affine differential geometry, where solutions yield parabolic affine sphere hypersurfaces. We find explicit examples, connect the holomorphic function representation to Hitchin's description of special Lagrangian moduli space, and construct the developing map explicitly for a singularity corresponding to the type $I_n$ elliptic fiber (after hyper-Kähler rotation). Following Baues and Cortés, we show that various types…
In this paper we study some fourth order elliptic equation involving the critical Sobolev exponent, related to the prescription of a fourth order conformal invariant on the standard sphere. We use a topological method to prove the existence of at least a solution when the function to be prescribed is close to a constant and a finite dimensional map associated to it has non-zero degree.
We investigate cloaking property of negative-index metamaterials in the time-harmonic electromagnetic setting for the so-called doubly complementary media. These are media consisting of negative-index metamaterials in a shell (plasmonic structure) and positive-index materials in its complement for which the shell is complementary to a part of the core and a part of the exterior of the core-shell structure. We show that an arbitrary object is invisible when it is placed close to a plasmonic structure of a doubly complementary medium as long as its cross section is smaller than a threshold given…
On a smoothly bounded domain $Ω\subset\R{2m}$ we consider a sequence of positive solutions $u_k\stackrel{w}{\rightharpoondown} 0$ in $H^m(Ω)$ to the equation $(-Δ)^m u_k=λ_k u_k e^{mu_k^2}$ subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions, where $0<λ_k\to 0$. Assuming that $$Λ:=\lim_{k\to\infty}\int_Ωu_k(-Δ)^m u_k dx<\infty,$$ we prove that $Λ$ is an integer multiple of $Λ_1:=(2m-1)!\vol(S^{2m})$, the total $Q$-curvature of the standard $2m$-dimensional sphere.
