Symmetry and Asymmetry: The Method of Moving Spheres

We consider some nonlinear elliptic equations on ${\mathbb R}^n$ and ${\mathbb S}^n$. By the method of moving spheres, we obtain the symmetry properties of solutions and some nonexistence results. Moreover, by the global bifurcation theory, we obtain a multiplicity result for a class of semilinear elliptic equations.

Direct Method of Moving Spheres on Fractional Order Equations

In this paper, we introduce a direct method of moving spheres for the nonlocal fractional Laplacian $(-\triangle)^{α/2}$ for $0<α<2$, in which a key ingredient is the narrow region maximum principle. As immediate applications, we classify the non-negative solutions for a semilinear equation involving the fractional Laplacian in $\mathbb{R}^n$; we prove a non-existence result for prescribing $Q_α$ curvature equation on $\mathbb{S}^n$; then by combining the direct method of moving planes and moving spheres, we establish a Liouville type theorem on the half Euclidean space. On the derivation of a Stokes-Brinkman problem from Stokes equations around a random array of moving spheres

We consider the Stokes system in $\mathbb R^3,$ deprived of $N$ spheres of radius $1/N,$ completed by constant boundary conditions on the spheres. This problem models the instantaneous response of a viscous fluid to an immersed cloud of moving solid spheres. We assume that the centers of the spheres and the boundary conditions are given randomly and we compute the asymptotic behavior of solutions when the parameter $N$ diverges. Under the assumption that the distribution of spheres/centers is chaotic, we prove convergence in mean to the solution of a Stokes-Brinkman problem.

Inverse moving source problems in electrodynamics

This paper is concerned with the uniqueness on two inverse moving source problems in electrodynamics with partial boundary data. We show that (1) if the temporal source function is compactly supported, then the spatial source profile function or the orbit function can be uniquely determined by the tangential trace of the electric field measured on part of a sphere, (2) if the temporal function is given by a Dirac distribution, then the impulsive time point and the source location can be uniquely determined at four receivers on a sphere.

On Time-Periodic Bifurcation of a Sphere Moving under Gravity in a Navier-Stokes Liquid

We provide sufficient conditions for the occurrence of time-periodic Hopf bifurcation for the coupled system constituted by a rigid sphere, $\mathscr S$, freely moving under gravity in a Navier-Stokes liquid. Since the region of flow is unbounded (namely, the whole space outside $\mathscr S$), the main difficulty consists in finding the appropriate functional setting where general theory may apply. A symmetry property for elliptic equations on the sphere

The goal of this paper is to study how the symmetry of the spherical domain influences solutions of elliptic equations on such domain. The method pursued is a variant of the moving plane method, discovered by Alexandrov (1962) and used for differential equations by Gidas, Ni and Nirenberg (1979). We obtain a reflectional symmetry result with respect to maxima and minima of solutions.
