In this paper, we establish three Arnold-type stability theorems for steady or rotating solutions of the incompressible Euler equation on a sphere. Specifically, we prove that if the stream function of a flow solves a semilinear elliptic equation with a monotone nonlinearity, then, under appropriate conditions, the flow is stable or orbitally stable in the Lyapunov sense. In particular, our theorems apply to degree-2 Rossby-Haurwitz waves. These results are achieved via a variational approach, with the key ingredient being to show that the flows under consideration satisfy the conditions of two Burton-type stability criteria which are established in this paper. As byproducts, we obtain some sharp rigidity results for solutions of semilinear elliptic equations on a sphere.
We study solutions of the equation $$ g_t-g_{tyy} + 4g^2 - 4gg_{yy} = y gg_{yyy}-yg_yg_{yy}, \qquad y\in\mathbb{R},$$ which arises by considering solutions of the Euler-Arnold equation on a contactomorphism group when the stream function is of the form $f(t,x,y,z) = zg(t,y)$. The equation is analogous to both the Camassa-Holm equation and the Proudman-Johnson equation. We write the equation as an ODE in a Banach space to establish local existence, and we describe conditions leading to global existence and conditions leading to blowup in finite time.
The point vortex dynamics in background fields on surfaces is justified as an Euler-Arnold flow in the sense of de Rham currents. We formulate a current-valued solution of the Euler-Arnold equation with a regular-singular decomposition. For the solution, we first prove that, if the singular part of the vorticity is given by a linear combination of delta functions centered at $q_n(t)$ for $n=1,\ldots,N$, $q_n(t)$ is a solution of the point vortex equation. Conversely, we next prove that, if $q_n(t)$ is a solution of the point vortex equation for $n=1,\ldots,N$, there exists a current-valued sol…
We define a right-invariant Riemannian metric on the group of contactomorphisms and study its Euler-Arnold equation. If the metric is associated to the contact form, the Euler-Arnold equation reduces to $m_t + u(m) + (n+2) mE(f) = 0$, in terms of the Reeb field $E$, a stream function $f$, the contact vector field $u$ defined by $f$, and the momentum $m = f - Δf$. Here the equation is considered on a compact manifold $M$ of dimension $2n+1$. When $n=0$ this reduces to the Camassa-Holm equation, and we emphasize the analogy with the higher-order equation. We use the usual momentum conservation l…
We give a sufficient condition for the nonlinear stability of steady flows of a two-dimensional ideal fluid in a bounded multiply-connected domain, which generalizes a stability criterion proved by Arnold in the 1960s. The most important ingredient of the proof is to establish a variational characterization for the steady flow under consideration, which is achieved based on the energy-Casimir method proposed by Arnold, and the supporting functional method introduced by Wolansky and Ghil. Nonlinear stability then follows from a compactness argument related to the variational characterization an…
Sinusoidal flows are an important class of explicit stationary solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations on a flat torus. For such flows, the steam functions are eigenfunctions of the negative Laplacian. In this paper, we prove that any sinusoidal flow related to some least eigenfunction is, up to phase translations, nonlinearly stable under $L^p$ norm of the vorticity for any $1<p<+\infty$, which improves a classical stability result by Arnold based on the energy-Casimir method. The key point of the proof is to distinguish least eigenstates with fixed amplitude from othe…

We construct a family of rotating vortex patches with fixed angular velocity for the two-dimensional Euler equations in a disk. As the vorticity strength goes to infinity, the limit of these rotating vortex patches is a rotating point vortex whose motion is described by the Kirchhoff-Routh equation. The construction is performed by solving a variational problem for the vorticity which is based on an adaption of Arnold's variational principle. We also prove nonlinear orbital stability of the set of maximizers in the variational problem under $L^p$ perturbation when $p\in[{3}/{2},+\infty)$.
In this work we systematically derive the governing equations of supersonic conical flow by projecting the 3D Euler equations onto the unit sphere. These equations result from taking the assumption of conical invariance on the 3D flow field. Under this assumption, the compressible Euler equations reduce to a system defined on the surface of the unit sphere. This compressible flow problem has been successfully used to study steady supersonic flow past cones of arbitrary cross section by reducing the number of spatial dimensions from 3 down to 2 while still capturing many of the relevant 3D effe…
This article is devoted to stationary solutions of Euler's equation on a rotating sphere, and to their relevance to the dynamics of stratospheric flows in the atmosphere of the outer planets of our solar system and in polar regions of the Earth. For the Euler equation, under appropriate conditions, rigidity results are established, ensuring that the solutions are either zonal or rotated zonal solutions. A natural analogue of Arnold's stability criterion is proved. In both cases, the lowest mode Rossby-Haurwitz stationary solutions (more precisely, those whose stream functions belong to the sum…
The present paper studies the structure of the set of stationary solutions to the incompressible Euler equations on the rotating unit sphere that are near two basic zonal flows: the zonal Rossby-Haurwitz solution of degree 2 and the zonal rigid rotation $Y_1^0$ along the polar axis. We construct a new family of non-zonal steady solutions arbitrarily close in analytic regularity to the second degree zonal Rossby-Haurwitz stream function, for any given rotation of the sphere. This shows that any non-linear inviscid damping to a zonal flow cannot be expected for solutions near this Rossby-Haurwit…
We prove existence of the global attractor of the damped and driven Euler--Bardina equations on the 2D sphere and on arbitrary domains on the sphere and give explicit estimates of its fractal dimension in terms of the physical parameters.
Let $M$ be a compact 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold with smooth boundary and consider the incompressible Euler equation on $M$. In the case that $M$ is the straight periodic channel, the annulus or the disc with the Euclidean metric, it was proved by T. D. Drivas, G. Misiołek, B. Shi, and the second author that all Arnold stable solutions have no conjugate point on the volume-preserving diffeomorphism group ${\mathcal D}_μ^{s}(M)$. They also proposed a question which asks whether this is true or not for any $M$. In this article, we give a partial positive answer. More precisely, we show tha…
For the free probability analogue of Euclidean space endowed with the Gaussian measure we apply the approach of Arnold to derive Euler equations for a Lie algebra of non-commutative vector fields which preserve a certain trace. We extend the equations to vector fields satisfying non-commutative smoothness requirements. We introduce a cyclic vorticity and show that it satisfies a vorticity equation and that it produces a family of conserved quantities.

We are concerned with the critical threshold phenomena in the Restricted Euler (RE) equations. Using the spectral and trace dynamics we identify the critical thresholds for 3D and the 4D restricted Euler equations. It is well known that the 3D RE solutions blow up. Projected on the 3-sphere, the set of initial eigenvalues which give rise to bounded stable solutions is reduced to a single point, which confirms that 3D RE blowup is generic. In contrast, we identify a surprisingly rich set of the initial spectrum on the 4-sphere which yields global smooth solutions; thus, 4D regularity is generic…
This paper studies the Vlasov-Monge-Ampere system (VMA), a fully non-linear version of the Vlasov-Poisson system (VP) where the (real) Monge-Ampere equation substitutes for the usual Poisson equation. This system can be derived as a geometric approximation of the Euler equations of incompressible fluid mechanics in the spirit of Arnold and Ebin. Global existence of weak solutions and local existence of smooth solutions are obtained. Links between the VMA system, the VP system and the Euler equations are established through rigorous asymptotic analysis.
As V. I. Arnold observed in the 1960s, the Euler equations of incompressible fluid flow correspond formally to geodesic equations in a group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms. Working in an Eulerian framework, we study incompressible flows of shapes as critical paths for action (kinetic energy) along transport paths constrained to have characteristic-function densities. The formal geodesic equations for this problem are Euler equations for incompressible, inviscid potential flow of fluid with zero pressure and surface tension on the free boundary. The problem of minimizing this action exhib…

The paper considers the Euler system of PDE on a smooth compact Riemannian manifold of positive curvature without boundary, and the sphere ${\mathbb{S}}^2$ in particular. The paper interprets the Euler equations as a transport problem for the fluid density under dynamics governed by the gradient of the internal energy of the fluid. The paper develops the notion of transport cost in the tangent bundle, and compares its properties with the Wasserstein transportation cost on the manifold. There are applications to the discrete approximation to the Euler equations in the style of Gangbo and Wesdic…
Motivated by recent studies in geophysical and planetary sciences, we investigate the PDE-analytical aspects of time-averages for barotropic, inviscid flows on a fast rotating sphere $S^2$. Of particular interests are the incompressible Euler equations. We prove that the finite-time-average of the solution stays close to a subspace of \emph{longitude-independent zonal flows}. The intial data can be arbitrarily far away from this subspace. Meridional variation of the Coriolis parameter underlies this phenomenon. Our proofs use Riemannian geometric tools, in particular the Hodge Theory.
This article is concerned with the analysis of the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations with a singular pressure law, the so-called hard sphere equation of state. The result is twofold. First, we establish the existence of bounded weak solutions by means of a viscous regularization and refined compensated compactness arguments. Second, we investigate the smooth setting by providing a detailed description of the impact of the singular pressure on the breakdown of the solutions. In this smooth framework, we rigorously justify the singular limit towards the free-congested Euler equations,…
We study stationary homogeneous solutions to the 3D Euler equation. The problem is motivated be recent exclusions of self-similar blowup for Euler and its relation to Onsager conjecture and intermittency. We reveal several new classes of solutions and prove rigidity properties in specific categories of genuinely 3D solutions. In particular, irrotational solutions are characterized by vanishing of the Bernoulli function; and tangential flows are necessarily 2D axisymmetric pure rotations. In several cases solutions are excluded altogether. The arguments reveal geodesic features of the Euler flo…
Existence of a conjugate point in the incompressible Euler flow on a sphere and an ellipsoid is considered. Misiolek (1996) formulated a differential-geometric criterion (we call M-criterion) for the existence of a conjugate point in a fluid flow. In this paper, it is shown that no zonal flow (stationary Euler flow) satisfies M-criterion if the background manifold is a sphere, on the other hand, there are zonal flows satisfy M-criterion if the background manifold is an ellipsoid (even it is sufficiently close to the sphere). The conjugate point is created by the fully nonlinear effect of the i…
In 1966 V.Arnold suggested a group-theoretic approach to ideal hydrodynamics in which the motion of an inviscid incompressible fluid is described as the geodesic flow of the right-invariant $L^2$-metric on the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the flow domain. Here we propose geodesic, group-theoretic, and Hamiltonian frameworks to include fluid flows with vortex sheets. It turns out that the corresponding dynamics is related to a certain groupoid of pairs of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms with common interface. We also develop a general framework for Euler-Arnold equations for …
Following Arnold's geometric interpretation, the Euler equations of an incompressible fluid moving in a domain D are known to be the optimality equation of the minimizing geodesic problem along the group of orientation and volume preserving diffeomorphisms of D. This problem admits a well-established convex relaxation which generates a set of "relaxed", "multi-stream", version of the Euler equations. However, it is unclear that such relaxed equations are appropriate for the initial value problem and the theory of turbulence, due to their lack of well-posedness for most initial data. As an atte…
The group of diffeomorphisms of a compact manifold endowed with the L^2 metric acting on the space of probability densities gives a unifying framework for the incompressible Euler equation and the theory of optimal mass transport. Recently, several authors have extended optimal transport to the space of positive Radon measures where the Wasserstein-Fisher-Rao distance is a natural extension of the classical L^2-Wasserstein distance. In this paper, we show a similar relation between this unbalanced optimal transport problem and the Hdiv right-invariant metric on the group of diffeomorphisms, wh…
In this paper, we construct a new class of blowup solutions with elementary functions to the 3-dimensional compressible or incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. In detail, we obtain a class of global rotational exact solutions for the compressible fluids with $γ>1$:%} [c]{c}% ρ=\max\{\frac{γ-1}{Kγ}[ C^{2}[ x^{2}% +y^{2}+z^{2}-(xy+yz+xz)] -\dot{a}(t)(x+y+z)+b(t)], 0\} ^{\frac{1}{γ-1}} u_{1}=a(t)+C(y-z) u_{2}=a(t)+C(-x+z) u_{3}=a(t)+C(x-y). where a(t)=c_{0}+c_{1}t and b(t)=3c_{0}c_{1}t+{3/2}c_{1}^{2}t^{2}+c_{2}% with $C$, $c_{0}$, $c_{1}$ and $c_{2}$ are arbitrary constants; And the …
Understanding complexity in fluid mechanics is a major problem that has attracted the attention of physicists and mathematicians during the last decades. Using the concept of renormalization in dynamics, we show the existence of a locally dense set $\mathscr G$ of stationary solutions to the Euler equations in $\mathbb R^3$ such that each vector field $X\in \mathscr G$ is universal in the sense that any area preserving diffeomorphism of the disk can be approximated (with arbitrary precision) by the Poincaré map of $X$ at some transverse section. We remark that this universality is approximate …
In this article, we investigate the geometry of a central extension $\widehat{\mathcal D}_μ(S^{2})$ of the group of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the 2-sphere equipped with the $L^{2}$-metric, whose geodesics correspond solutions of the incompressible Euler equation with Coriolis force. In particular, we calculate the Misiolek curvature of this group. This value is related to the existence of a conjugate point and its positivity directly implies the positivity of the sectional curvature.
We consider the classical compressible Euler's Equations in three space dimensions with an arbitrary equation of state, and whose initial data corresponds to a constant state outside a sphere. Under suitable restriction on the size of the initial departure from the constant state, we establish theorems which give a complete description of the maximal development. In particular, the boundary of the domain of the maximal solution contains a singular part where the inverse density of the wave fronts vanishes and the shocks form. We obtain a detailed description of the geometry of this singular bo…
