We are concerned with the critical threshold phenomena in the Restricted Euler (RE) equations. Using the spectral and trace dynamics we identify the critical thresholds for 3D and the 4D restricted Euler equations. It is well known that the 3D RE solutions blow up. Projected on the 3-sphere, the set of initial eigenvalues which give rise to bounded stable solutions is reduced to a single point, which confirms that 3D RE blowup is generic. In contrast, we identify a surprisingly rich set of the initial spectrum on the 4-sphere which yields global smooth solutions; thus, 4D regularity is generic.
In this paper we study the weighted Gevrey class regularity of Euler equation in the whole space R 3. We first establish the local existence of Euler equation in weighted Sobolev space, then obtain the weighted Gevrey regularity of Euler equation. We will use the weighted Sobolev-Gevrey space method to obtain the results of Gevrey regularity of Euler equation, and the use of the property of singular operator in the estimate of the pressure term is the improvement of our work.
We consider the incompressible Euler equations on ${\mathbb R}^d$, where $d \in \{ 2,3 \}$. We prove that: (a) In Lagrangian coordinates the equations are locally well-posed in spaces with fixed real-analyticity radius (more generally, a fixed Gevrey-class radius). (b) In Lagrangian coordinates the equations are well-posed in highly anisotropic spaces, e.g.~Gevrey-class regularity in the label $a_1$ and Sobolev regularity in the labels $a_2,...,a_d$. (c) In Eulerian coordinates both results (a) and (b) above are false.
We give sufficient conditions on the regularity of solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Euler and the compressible isentropic Euler systems in order for the energy to be conserved. Our strategy relies on commutator estimates similar to those employed by P. Constantin et al. for the homogeneous incompressible Euler equations.
In this note, we construct solutions to the 2D Euler equations which belong to the Yudovich class but lose $W^{1,p}$ regularity continuously with time.
We consider the Euler equations in a three-dimensional Gevrey-class bounded domain. Using Lagrangian coordinates we obtain the Gevrey-class persistence of the solution, up to the boundary, with an explicit estimate on the rate of decay of the Gevrey-class regularity radius.
We consider the three-dimensional incompressible free-boundary Euler equations in a bounded domain and with surface tension. Using Lagrangian coordinates, we establish a priori estimates for solutions with minimal regularity assumptions on the initial data.
It is well known that the Euler vortex patch in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ will remain regular if it is regular enough initially. In bounded domains, the regularity theory for patch solutions is less complete. We study here the Euler vortex patch in a disk. We prove global in time regularity by providing the upper bound of the growth of curvature of the patch boundary. For a special symmetric scenario, we construct an example of double exponential curvature growth, showing that such upper bound is qualitatively sharp.
Given any solution $u$ of the Euler equations which is assumed to have some regularity in space - in terms of Besov norms, natural in this context - we show by interpolation methods that it enjoys a corresponding regularity in time and that the associated pressure $p$ is twice as regular as $u$. This generalizes a recent result by Isett [16] (see also Colombo and De Rosa [8]), which covers the case of Hölder spaces.
In "Global regularity for vortex patches" (Commun. Math. Phys. 1993), Bertozzi and Constantin formulate the vortex patch problem in the level-set framework and prove a priori estimates for this active scalar equation. By extending the tools used to prove these estimates, we construct solutions and show propagation of higher Hölder regularity. This constitutes a proof of the regularity of vortex patches, carried out solely in the level-set framework.
We study a Euler-Bernoulli beam equation with localized discontinuous structural damping. As our main result, we prove that the associated $C_0$-semigroup $(S(t))_{t\geq0}$ is of Gevrey class $δ>24$ for $t>0$, hence immediately differentiable. Moreover, we show that $(S(t))_{t\geq0}$ is exponentially stable.
It is well known that the Euler vortex patch in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ will remain regular if it is regular enough initially. In bounded domains, the regularity theory for patch solutions is less complete. In this paper, we study Euler vortex patches in a general smooth bounded domain. We prove global in time regularity by providing an upper bound on the growth of curvature of the patch boundary. For a special symmetric scenario, we construct an example of double exponential curvature growth, showing that our upper bound is qualitatively sharp.
Dissipative hyperbolic systems of \textit{regularity-loss} have been recently received increasing attention. Usually, extra higher regularity is assumed to obtain the optimal decay estimates, in comparison with that for the global-in-time existence of solutions. In this paper, we develop a new frequency-localization time-decay property, which enables us to overcome the technical difficulty and improve the minimal decay-regularity for dissipative systems. As an application, it is shown that the optimal decay rate of $L^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$-$L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$ is available for Euler-Maxwell equation…
In this work we prove the weighted Gevrey regularity of solutions to the incompressible Euler equation with initial data decaying polynomially at infinity. This is motivated by the well-posedness problem of vertical boundary layer equation for fast rotating fluid. The method presented here is based on the basic weighted $L^2$- estimate, and the main difficulty arises from the estimate on the pressure term due to the appearance of weight function.
The purpose of this note is to give a complete proof of a $C^{0,α}$ regularity result for the pressure for weak solutions of the two-dimensional "incompressible Euler equations" when the fluid velocity enjoys the same type of regularity in a compact simply connected domain with $C^2$ boundary. To accomplish our result we realize that it is compulsory to introduce a new weak formulation for the boundary condition of the pressure which is consistent with, and equivalent to, that of classical solutions.
In this paper we consider the incompressible Euler equation on the Sobolev space $H^s(\R^n)$, $s > n/2+1$, and show that for any $T > 0$ its solution map $u_0 \mapsto u(T)$, mapping the initial value to the value at time $T$, is nowhere locally uniformly continuous and nowhere differentiable.
We study one-dimensional Eulerian dynamics with nonlocal alignment interactions, featuring strong short-range alignment, and long-range misalignment. Compared with the well-studied Euler-alignment system, the presence of the misalignment brings different behaviors of the solutions, including the possible creation of vacuum at infinite time, which destabilizes the solutions. We show that with a strongly singular short-range alignment interaction, the solution is globally regular, despite the effect of misalignment.
In 1993, Chemin proved that vorticity possessing negative Holder regularity in directions given by a sufficient family of vector fields (striated regularity) maintains such regularity for all time when measured against the push-forward of those vector fields. Later work of Gamblin and Saint Raymond, and of Danchin, established analogous results in higher dimension. We give an alternative proof of these results, and establish the propagation of striated regularity of the Lagrangian velocity in a positive Holder space.
We consider the vortex patch problem for both the 2-D and 3-D incompressible Euler equations. In 2-D, we prove that for vortex patches with $H^{k-0.5}$ Sobolev-class contour regularity, $k \ge 4$, the velocity field on both sides of the vortex patch boundary has $H^k$ regularity for all time. In 3-D, we establish existence of solutions to the vortex patch problem on a finite-time interval $[0,T]$, and we simultaneously establish the $H^{k-0.5}$ regularity of the two-dimensional vortex patch boundary, as well as the $H^k$ regularity of the velocity fields on both sides of vortex patch boundary,…
In [Isett,13], the first author proposed a strengthening of Onsager's conjecture on the failure of energy conservation for incompressible Euler flows with Hölder regularity not exceeding $1/3$. This stronger form of the conjecture implies that anomalous dissipation will fail for a generic Euler flow with regularity below the Onsager critical space $L_t^\infty B_{3,\infty}^{1/3}$ due to low regularity of the energy profile. In this paper, we establish two theorems that may be viewed as first steps towards establishing the conjectured failure of energy regularity for generic solutions with Hölde…
We consider the 2-D incompressible Euler equations in a bounded domain and show that local weak solutions are exponentially integrable, uniformly in time, under minimal integrability conditions. This is a Serrin-type interior regularity result $$u \in L_{\rm loc}^{2+\varepsilon}(Ω_T) \implies {\rm regularity}$$ for weak solutions in the energy space $L_t^\infty L_x^2$ satisfying appropriate vorticity estimates. The argument is completely local in nature as the result follows from the structural properties of the equation alone, while completely avoiding all sorts of boundary conditions and rel…
In this paper we consider the Euler-Poisson system (describing a plasma made of ions with a negligible ion temperature) on the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R^3)$, $s > 5/2$. Using a geometric approach we show that for any time $T > 0$ the corresponding solution map, $(ρ_0,u_0) \mapsto (ρ(T),u(T))$, is nowhere locally uniformly continuous. On the other hand it turns out that the trajectories of the ions are analytic curves in $\R^3$.
We study a basic plasma physics model--the one-fluid Euler--Poisson system on the square torus, in which a compressible electron fluid flows under its own electrostatic field. In this paper we prove long-term regularity of periodic solutions of this system in 2 spatial dimensions. Our main conclusion is that on a square torus of side length $R$, if the initial data is sufficiently close to a constant solution, then the solution is wellposed for a time at least $R/ε^2(\log R)^{O(1)}$, where $ε$ is the size of the initial data.
A class of semi-bounded solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations satisfying either periodic or Dirichlet boundary conditions is examined. For smooth initial data, new blowup criteria in terms of the initial concavity profile is presented and the effects that the boundary conditions have on the global regularity of solutions is discussed. In particular, by deriving a formula for a general solution along Lagrangian trajectories, we describe how periodicity can prevent blow-up. This is as opposed to Dirichlet boundary conditions which, as we will show, allow for the formati…
In this work, we study the behavior of blow-up solutions to the multidimensional restricted Euler--Poisson equations which are the localized version of the full Euler--Poisson system. We provide necessary conditions for the existence of finite-time blow-up solutions in terms of the initial data, and describe the asymptotic behavior of the solutions near blow up times. We also identify a rich set of the initial data which yields global bounded solutions.
The Euler-Poisson-Alignment (EPA) system appears in mathematical biology and is used to model, in a hydrodynamic limit, a set agents interacting through mutual attraction/repulsion as well as alignment forces. We consider one-dimensional EPA system with a class of singular alignment terms as well as natural attraction/repulsion terms. The singularity of the alignment kernel produces an interesting effect regularizing the solutions of the equation and leading to global regularity for wide range of initial data. This was recently observed in the paper by Do, Kiselev, Ryzhik and Tan. Our goal in …
Due to the dissipative structure of \textit{regularity-loss}, extra higher regularity than that for the global-in-time existence is usually imposed to obtain the optimal decay rates of classical solutions to dissipative systems. The aim of this paper is to seek the lowest regularity index for the optimal decay rate of $L^{1}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-$L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Consequently, a notion of minimal decay regularity for dissipative systems of regularity-loss is firstly proposed. To do this, we develop a new time-decay estimate of $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$-$L^{q}(\mathbb{R}^n)$-$L^{r}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ type b…
Euler-Leray data functions of first and second order are defined by first and second order derivatives of the nonlinear spatial part of the incompressible Euler equation operator in Leray projection form applied to Cauchy data. The Lipschitz continuity of these functions for a certain class of strongly regular Cauchy data is sufficient for the existence of global regular upper bounds of incompressible Navier Stokes equation solutions. Global regular upper bounds of global solution branches of the incompressible Euler equation can be obtained for a class of strongly regular Cauchy data, if the …
Temporal regularity of the solution to the incompressible Euler equations in the end-point critical Triebel-Lizorkin space $F^{d+1}_{1, \infty}(\mathbb{R}^d)$
We present an alpha-regularization of the Birkhoff-Rott equation, induced by the two-dimensional Euler-alpha equations, for the vortex sheet dynamics. We show that initially smooth self-avoiding vortex sheet remains smooth for all times under the alpha-regularized dynamics, provided the initial density of vorticity is an integrable function over the curve with respect to the arc-length measure.
For any $ε>0$ we show the existence of continuous periodic weak solutions $v$ of the Euler equations which do not conserve the kinetic energy and belong to the space $L^1_t (C_x^{\frac{1}{3}-ε})$, namely $x\mapsto v (x,t)$ is $(\frac{1}{3}-ε)$-Hölder continuous in space at a.e. time $t$ and the integral $\int [v(\cdot, t)]_{\frac{1}{3}-ε} dt$ is finite. A well-known open conjecture of L. Onsager claims that such solutions exist even in the class $L^\infty_t (C_x^{\frac{1}{3}-ε})$.
We provide a complete description of the critical threshold phenomena for the two-dimensional localized Euler-Poisson equations, introduced by the authors in [Liu & Tadmor, Comm. Math Phys., To appear]. Here, the questions of global regularity vs. finite-time breakdown for the 2D Restricted Euler-Poisson solutions are classified in terms of precise explicit formulae, describing a remarkable variety of critical threshold surfaces of initial configurations. In particular, it is shown that the 2D critical thresholds depend on the relative size of three quantities: the initial density, the initial…
On the structure of entropy dissipation and regularity for quasi-entropy solutions to 1d scalar conservation laws and to isentropic Euler system with $γ=3$
This article is concerned in establishing the existence and regularity of solution of semi-hyperbolic patch problem for two-dimensional isentropic Euler equations with van der Waals gas. This type of solution appears in the transonic flow over an airfoil and Guderley reflection and is very common in the numerical solution of Riemann problems. We use the idea of characteristic decomposition and bootstrap method to prove the existence of global smooth solution which is uniformly $C^{1, \frac{1}{2}}$ continuous up to the sonic curve. We also prove that the sonic curve is $C^{1, \frac{1}{2}}$ cont…
Classical vorticity solution branches of the three dimensional incompressible Euler equation are constructed where a velocity component can blow up at some point after finite time for regular data in H2. Furthermore, vorticity can blow up after finite time for data in H2, and there are classical solution branches with regular data which develop weak singularities at some point of space time after finite time. The construction of these time-local solution branches is by viscosity limits of viscosity extensions of time-reversed Euler-type equations. The short time (weak) singularities are then i…
We derive a new formulation of the relativistic Euler equations that exhibits remarkable properties. This new formulation consists of a coupled system of geometric wave, transport, and elliptic equations, sourced by nonlinearities that are null forms relative to the acoustical metric. Our new formulation is well-suited for various applications, in particular for the study of stable shock formation, as it is surveyed in the paper. Moreover, using the new formulation presented here, we establish a local well-posedness result showing that the vorticity and the entropy of the fluid are one degree …
For any positive regularity parameter $β< \frac 12$, we construct non-conservative weak solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations which lie in $H^β$ uniformly in time. In particular, we construct solutions which have an $L^2$-based regularity index \emph{strictly larger} than $\frac 13$, thus deviating from the $H^{\frac{1}{3}}$-regularity corresponding to the Kolmogorov-Obhukov $\frac 53$ power spectrum in the inertial range.
In this work we investigate some regularization properties of the incompressible Euler equations and of the fractional Navier-Stokes equations where the dissipative term is given by $(-Δ)^α$, for a suitable power $α\in (0,\frac{1}{2})$ (the only meaningful range for this result). Assuming that the solution $u \in L^\infty _t(C^θ_x)$ for some $θ\in (0,1)$ we prove that $u \in C^θ_{t,x}$, the pressure $p\in C^{2θ-}_{t,x}$ and the kinetic energy $e \in C^{\frac{2θ}{1-θ}}_t$. This result was obtained for the Euler equations in [Is13] with completely different arguments and we believe that our proo…
In this paper, we study the regularity properties of bounded entropy solutions to the isentropic Euler equations with $γ= 3$. First, we use a blow-up technique to obtain a new trace theorem for all such solutions. Second, we use a modified De Giorgi type iteration on the kinetic formulation to show a new partial regularity result on the Riemann invariants. We are able to conclude that in fact for any bounded entropy solution $u$, the density $ρ$ is almost everywhere upper semicontinuous away from vacuum. To our knowledge, this is the first example of a nonlinear hyperbolic system, which fails …
About thirty years ago we looked for "minimal assumptions" on the data which guarantee that solutions to the $\,2-D\,$ evolution Euler equations in a bounded domain are classical. Classical means here that all the derivatives appearing in the equations and boundary conditions are continuous up to the boundary. Following a well known device, the above problem led us to consider this same regularity problem for the Poisson equation under homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. At this point, one was naturally led to consider the extension of this last problem to more general linear elliptic b…
We prove long-term regularity of solutions of the one-fluid Euler-Maxwell system in 3 spatial dimensions, in the case of small initial data with nontrivial vorticity.
We study a pressureless Euler system with a nonlinear density-dependent alignment term, originating in the Cucker-Smale swarming models. The alignment term is dissipative in the sense that it tends to equilibrate the velocities. Its density dependence is natural: the alignment rate increases in the areas of high density due to species discomfort. The diffusive term has the order of a fractional Laplacian $(-\partial_{xx})^{α/2}$, $α\in (0, 1)$. The corresponding Burgers equation with a linear dissipation of this type develops shocks in a finite time. We show that the alignment nonlinearity enh…
We consider the Euler equations on the two-dimensional torus and construct invariant measures for the dynamics of these equations, concentrated on sufficiently regular Sobolev spaces so that strong solutions are also known to exist. The proof follows the method of Kuksin and we obtain in particular that these measures do not have atoms, excluding trivial invariant measures. Then we prove that almost every initial data with respect to the constructed measures give rise to global solutions for which the growth of the Sobolev norms are at most polynomial. To do this, we rely on an argument of Bou…
In this work we investigate the helicity regularity for weak solutions of the incompressible Euler equations. To prove regularity and conservation of the helicity we will threat the velocity $u$ and its $curl\, u$ as two independent functions and we mainly show that the helicity is a constant of motion assuming $u \in L^{2r}_t(C^θ_x)$ and $curl \,u \in L^κ_t(W^{α,1}_x)$ where $r,κ$ are conjugate Hölder exponents and $2θ+α\geq 1$. Using the same techniques we also show that the helicity has a suitable Hölder regularity even in the range where it is not necessarily constant.
