In this paper we consider the Euler-Poisson system (describing a plasma made of ions with a negligible ion temperature) on the Sobolev spaces $H^s(\R^3)$, $s > 5/2$. Using a geometric approach we show that for any time $T > 0$ the corresponding solution map, $(ρ_0,u_0) \mapsto (ρ(T),u(T))$, is nowhere locally uniformly continuous. On the other hand it turns out that the trajectories of the ions are analytic curves in $\R^3$.
In this paper we study the weighted Gevrey class regularity of Euler equation in the whole space R 3. We first establish the local existence of Euler equation in weighted Sobolev space, then obtain the weighted Gevrey regularity of Euler equation. We will use the weighted Sobolev-Gevrey space method to obtain the results of Gevrey regularity of Euler equation, and the use of the property of singular operator in the estimate of the pressure term is the improvement of our work.
We consider the incompressible Euler equations on ${\mathbb R}^d$, where $d \in \{ 2,3 \}$. We prove that: (a) In Lagrangian coordinates the equations are locally well-posed in spaces with fixed real-analyticity radius (more generally, a fixed Gevrey-class radius). (b) In Lagrangian coordinates the equations are well-posed in highly anisotropic spaces, e.g.~Gevrey-class regularity in the label $a_1$ and Sobolev regularity in the labels $a_2,...,a_d$. (c) In Eulerian coordinates both results (a) and (b) above are false.
We give sufficient conditions on the regularity of solutions to the inhomogeneous incompressible Euler and the compressible isentropic Euler systems in order for the energy to be conserved. Our strategy relies on commutator estimates similar to those employed by P. Constantin et al. for the homogeneous incompressible Euler equations.
In this note, we construct solutions to the 2D Euler equations which belong to the Yudovich class but lose $W^{1,p}$ regularity continuously with time.
The main purpose of this paper is to provide an effective procedure to study rigorously the relationship between unipolar and bipolar Euler-Poisson system in the perspective of mass. Based on the fact that the mass of an electron is far less than that of an ion, we amplify this property by letting $m_e/m_i\rightarrow 0$ and using two different singular limits to illustrate it, which are zero-electron mass limit and infinity-ion mass limit. We use the method of asymptotic expansion to handle the problem and find that the limiting process from bipolar to unipolar system is actually the process o…
In this paper, the finite time blow-up of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for full Euler-Poisson equations and isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with repulsive forces or attractive forces in high dimensions $(n\geq3)$ is proved for a large class of initial data. It is not required that the initial data has compact support or contains vacuum in any finite regions.
This paper studies the two-dimensional Euler-Poisson equations associated with either attractive or repulsive forces. We mainly study the Riccati system that governs the flow's gradient. Under a suitable condition, it is shown that the Euler-Poisson system admits global smooth solutions for a large set of initial configurations. This paper is a continuation of our former work [8].
We improve the recent result of Chae & Tadmor in [Comm. Math. Sci. 6(3) (2008) 785-789], proving a one-sided threshold condition which leads to finite-time breakdown of the Euler-Poisson equations in arbitrary dimension n.
We consider the Euler equations in a three-dimensional Gevrey-class bounded domain. Using Lagrangian coordinates we obtain the Gevrey-class persistence of the solution, up to the boundary, with an explicit estimate on the rate of decay of the Gevrey-class regularity radius.
Consider the scaling $\varepsilon^{1/2}(x-Vt)\to x,\ \varepsilon^{3/2}t\to t$ in the Euler-Poisson system for ion-acoustic waves \eqref{equ1}. We establish that as $\varepsilon\to 0$, the solutions to such Euler-Poisson system converge globally in time to the solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation.
We prove shock formation for 3D Euler-Poisson system for electron fluid plasma. The shock solution we construct is of large initial data, also compactly supported during the lifespan. In addition, the blowup time and location can be computed explicitly.
We prove that small smooth irrotational but charged perturbations of a constant background are global and go back to equilibrium in the 3D electron Euler-Poissson equation.
We consider the (repulsive) Euler-Poisson system for the electrons in two dimensions and prove that small smooth perturbations of a constant background exist for all time and remain smooth (never develop shocks). This extends to 2D the work of Guo.
The SBV regularity of weak entropy solutions to the Burgers-Poisson equation is considered. We show that the derivative of a solution consists of only the absolutely continuous part and the jump part.
We consider the three-dimensional incompressible free-boundary Euler equations in a bounded domain and with surface tension. Using Lagrangian coordinates, we establish a priori estimates for solutions with minimal regularity assumptions on the initial data.
We prove the finite time blow-up for $C^1$ solutions to the Euler-Poisson equations in $\Bbb R^n$, $n\geq 1$, with/without background density for initial data satisfying suitable conditions. We also find a sufficient condition for the initial data such that $C^3$ solution breaks down in finite time for the compressible Euler equations for polytropic gas flows.
It is well known that the Euler vortex patch in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ will remain regular if it is regular enough initially. In bounded domains, the regularity theory for patch solutions is less complete. We study here the Euler vortex patch in a disk. We prove global in time regularity by providing the upper bound of the growth of curvature of the patch boundary. For a special symmetric scenario, we construct an example of double exponential curvature growth, showing that such upper bound is qualitatively sharp.
We prove a local regularity result for distributional solutions of the Poisson's equation with $L^p$ data. We use a very short argument based on Weyl's lemma and Riesz-Fréchet representation theorem.
We prove the unique existence of supersonic solutions of the Euler- Poisson system for potential flow in a three-dimensional rectangular cylinder when prescribing the velocity and the strength of electric field at the entrance. Overall, the main framework is similar to [1], but there are several technical differences to be taken care of vary carefully. And, it is our main goal to treat all the technical differences occurring when one considers a three dimensional supersonic solution of the steady Euler-Poisson system.
In this work, we study the behavior of blow-up solutions to the multidimensional restricted Euler--Poisson equations which are the localized version of the full Euler--Poisson system. We provide necessary conditions for the existence of finite-time blow-up solutions in terms of the initial data, and describe the asymptotic behavior of the solutions near blow up times. We also identify a rich set of the initial data which yields global bounded solutions.
Given any solution $u$ of the Euler equations which is assumed to have some regularity in space - in terms of Besov norms, natural in this context - we show by interpolation methods that it enjoys a corresponding regularity in time and that the associated pressure $p$ is twice as regular as $u$. This generalizes a recent result by Isett [16] (see also Colombo and De Rosa [8]), which covers the case of Hölder spaces.
In "Global regularity for vortex patches" (Commun. Math. Phys. 1993), Bertozzi and Constantin formulate the vortex patch problem in the level-set framework and prove a priori estimates for this active scalar equation. By extending the tools used to prove these estimates, we construct solutions and show propagation of higher Hölder regularity. This constitutes a proof of the regularity of vortex patches, carried out solely in the level-set framework.
We construct a special $C^{1,α}$ blow up solution to the three dimensional system modeling electro-hydrodynamics, which is strongly coupled with incompressible Euler equation and Nernst-Planck-Poisson equation. Our construction lies on the framework established in Elgindi [11] and relies on a special solution to variant spherical Laplacian.

We study a Euler-Bernoulli beam equation with localized discontinuous structural damping. As our main result, we prove that the associated $C_0$-semigroup $(S(t))_{t\geq0}$ is of Gevrey class $δ>24$ for $t>0$, hence immediately differentiable. Moreover, we show that $(S(t))_{t\geq0}$ is exponentially stable.
We establish unique existence and stability of subsonic potential flow for steady Euler-Poisson system in a multidimensional nozzle of a finite length when prescribing the electric potential difference on non-insulated boundary from a fixed point at the exit, and prescribing the pressure at the exit of the nozzle. The Euler-Poisson system for subsonic potential flow can be reduced to a nonlinear elliptic system of second order. In this paper, we develop a technique to achieve a priori $C^{1,\alp}$ estimates of solutions to a quasi-linear second order elliptic system with mixed boundary conditi…
We derive an explicit formula for global weak solutions of the one dimensional system of pressure-less Euler-Poisson equations. Our variational formulation is an extension of the well-known formula for entropy solutions of the scalar inviscid Burgers' equation: since the characteristics of the Euler-Poisson equations are parabolas, the representation of their weak solution takes the form of a "quadratic" version of the celebrated Lax-Oleinik variational formula. Three cases are considered. (i) The variational formula recovers the "sticky particle" solution in the attractive case; (ii) It repre…
This paper proves the existence of variational rotating solutions to the compressible non-isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with prescribed total mass. This extends the result of the isentropic case [Auchmuty and Beals, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 1971] to the non-isentropic case. Compared with the previous result of variational rotating solutions in non-isentropic case [Wu, Journal of Differential Equations, 2015], to keep the constraint of a prescribed finite total mass, the author establishes a new variational structure the non-isentropic Euler-Poisson equations.
The Euler-Poisson equations model rotating gaseous stars. Numerous efforts have been made to establish existence and properties of the rotating star solutions. Recent interests in extrasolar planet structures require extension of the model to include a inner rocky core together with its own gravitational potential. In this paper, we discuss various extensions of the classical rotating star results to incorporate a solid core.
We study the regularity of the $p$-Poisson equation $$ Δ_p u = h, \quad h\in L^q $$ in the plane. In the case $p>2$ and $2<q<\infty$ we obtain the sharp Hölder exponent for the gradient. In the other cases we come arbitrarily close to the sharp exponent.
We show the continuity of the flow map for quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic systems with general right--hand sides in different functional setting, including weighted Sobolev spaces $H_{s,δ}$. An essential tool to achieve the continuity of the flow map is a low regularity energy estimate. We then apply these results to the Euler--Poisson system which describes various systems of physical interests.
It is well known that the Euler vortex patch in $\mathbb{R}^{2}$ will remain regular if it is regular enough initially. In bounded domains, the regularity theory for patch solutions is less complete. In this paper, we study Euler vortex patches in a general smooth bounded domain. We prove global in time regularity by providing an upper bound on the growth of curvature of the patch boundary. For a special symmetric scenario, we construct an example of double exponential curvature growth, showing that our upper bound is qualitatively sharp.
We study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson system describing a plasma made of ions and massless electrons. The analysis is achieved in a domain of $\R^3$ and thus extends former results by Cordier and Grenier [Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 25 (2000), pp.~1099--1113], who dealt with the same problem in a one-dimensional domain without boundary.
In this note, we announce new regularity results for some locally integrable distributional solutions to Poisson's equation. This includes, for example, the standard solutions obtained by convolution with the fundamental solution. In particular, our results show that there is no qualitative difference in the regularity of these solutions in the plane and in higher dimensions.
This paper analyzes various schemes for the Euler-Poisson-Boltzmann (EPB) model of plasma physics. This model consists of the pressureless gas dynamics equations coupled with the Poisson equation and where the Boltzmann relation relates the potential to the electron density. If the quasi-neutral assumption is made, the Poisson equation is replaced by the constraint of zero local charge and the model reduces to the Isothermal Compressible Euler (ICE) model. We compare a numerical strategy based on the EPB model to a strategy using a reformulation (called REPB formulation). The REPB scheme captu…
Dissipative hyperbolic systems of \textit{regularity-loss} have been recently received increasing attention. Usually, extra higher regularity is assumed to obtain the optimal decay estimates, in comparison with that for the global-in-time existence of solutions. In this paper, we develop a new frequency-localization time-decay property, which enables us to overcome the technical difficulty and improve the minimal decay-regularity for dissipative systems. As an application, it is shown that the optimal decay rate of $L^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$-$L^2(\mathbb{R}^3)$ is available for Euler-Maxwell equation…
In this work we prove the weighted Gevrey regularity of solutions to the incompressible Euler equation with initial data decaying polynomially at infinity. This is motivated by the well-posedness problem of vertical boundary layer equation for fast rotating fluid. The method presented here is based on the basic weighted $L^2$- estimate, and the main difficulty arises from the estimate on the pressure term due to the appearance of weight function.
The purpose of this note is to give a complete proof of a $C^{0,α}$ regularity result for the pressure for weak solutions of the two-dimensional "incompressible Euler equations" when the fluid velocity enjoys the same type of regularity in a compact simply connected domain with $C^2$ boundary. To accomplish our result we realize that it is compulsory to introduce a new weak formulation for the boundary condition of the pressure which is consistent with, and equivalent to, that of classical solutions.
In this paper, we study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson equation for ions, in a domain with boundary. This is a follow-up to our previous work \cite{GVHKR}, devoted to no-penetration as well as subsonic outflow boundary conditions. We focus here on the case of supersonic outflow velocities. The structure of the boundary layers and the stabilization mechanism are different.
In this paper we consider the incompressible Euler equation on the Sobolev space $H^s(\R^n)$, $s > n/2+1$, and show that for any $T > 0$ its solution map $u_0 \mapsto u(T)$, mapping the initial value to the value at time $T$, is nowhere locally uniformly continuous and nowhere differentiable.
We construct stationary axisymmetric solutions of the Euler-Poisson equations, which govern the internal structure of polytropic gaseous stars, with small constant angular velocity when the adiabatic exponent $γ$ belongs to $(\frac65,\frac32]$. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear integral equation, and is solved by iteration technique. By this method, not only we get the existence, but also we clarify properties of the solutions such as the physical vacuum condition and oblateness of the star surface.
The Euler Poisson equations describe important physical phenomena in many applications such as semiconductor modeling and plasma physics. This paper is to advance our understanding of critical threshold phenomena in such systems in the presence of different forces. We identify critical thresholds in two damped Euler Poisson systems, with and without alignment, both with attractive potential and spatially varying background state. For both systems, we give respective bounds for subcritical and supercritical regions in the space of initial configuration, thereby proving the existence of a critic…
We establish new quantitative estimates for localized finite differences of solutions to the Poisson problem for the fractional Laplace operator with homogeneous Dirichlet conditions of solid type settled in bounded domains satisfying the Lipschitz cone regularity condition. We then apply these estimates to obtain (i)~regularity results for solutions of fractional Poisson problems in Besov spaces; (ii)~quantitative stability estimates for solutions of fractional Poisson problems with respect to domain perturbations; (iii)~quantitative stability estimates for eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of f…
We study one-dimensional Eulerian dynamics with nonlocal alignment interactions, featuring strong short-range alignment, and long-range misalignment. Compared with the well-studied Euler-alignment system, the presence of the misalignment brings different behaviors of the solutions, including the possible creation of vacuum at infinite time, which destabilizes the solutions. We show that with a strongly singular short-range alignment interaction, the solution is globally regular, despite the effect of misalignment.
