We prove the unique existence of supersonic solutions of the Euler- Poisson system for potential flow in a three-dimensional rectangular cylinder when prescribing the velocity and the strength of electric field at the entrance. Overall, the main framework is similar to [1], but there are several technical differences to be taken care of vary carefully. And, it is our main goal to treat all the technical differences occurring when one considers a three dimensional supersonic solution of the steady Euler-Poisson system.
This paper focuses on the structure of classical sonic-supersonic solutions near sonic curves for the two-dimensional full Euler equations in gas dynamics. In order to deal with the parabolic degeneracy near the sonic curve, a novel set of dependent and independent variables are introduced to transform the Euler equations into a new system of governing equations which displays a clear regularity-singularity structure. With the help of technical characteristic decompositions, the existence of a local smooth solution for the new system is first established in a weighted metric space by using the…
The well-posedness for the supersonic solutions of the Euler-Poisson system for hydrodynamical model in semiconductor devices and plasmas is studied in this paper. We first reformulate the Euler-Poisson system in the supersonic region into a second order hyperbolic-elliptic coupled system together with several transport equations. One of the key ingredients of the analysis is to obtain the well-posedness of the boundary value problem for the associated linearized hyperbolic-elliptic coupled system, which is achieved via a delicate choice of multiplier to gain energy estimate. The nonlinear str…
Supersonic-sonic patches are ubiquitous in regions of transonic flows and they boil down to a family of degenerate hyperbolic problems in regions surrounded by a streamline, a characteristic curve and a possible sonic curve. This paper establishes the global existence of solutions in a whole supersonic-sonic patch characterized by the two-dimensional full system of steady Euler equations and studies solution behaviors near sonic curves, depending on the proper choice of boundary data extracted from the airfoil problem and related contexts. New characteristic decompositions are developed for th…
In this paper, we study the stability of supersonic contact discontinuity for the two-dimensional steady compressible Euler flows in a finitely long nozzle of varying cross-sections. We formulate the problem as an initial-boundary value problem with the contact discontinuity as a free boundary. To deal with the free boundary value problem, we employ the Lagrangian transformation to straighten the contact discontinuity and then the free boundary value problem becomes a fixed boundary value problem. We develop an iteration scheme and establish some novel estimates of solutions for the first orde…
We study supersonic flow past a convex corner which is surrounded by quiescent gas. When the pressure of the upstream supersonic flow is larger than that of the quiescent gas, there appears a strong rarefaction wave to rarefy the supersonic gas. Meanwhile, a transonic characteristic discontinuity appears to separate the supersonic flow behind the rarefaction wave from the static gas. In this paper, we employ a wave front tracking method to establish structural stability of such a flow pattern under non-smooth perturbations of the upcoming supersonic flow. It is an initial-value/free-boundary p…
For a two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flow past a convex cornered wall with right angle, a characteristic discontinuity (vortex sheet and/or entropy wave) is generated, which separates the supersonic flow from the gas at rest (hence subsonic). We proved that such a transonic characteristic discontinuity is structurally stable under small perturbations of the upstream supersonic flow in $BV$. The existence of a weak entropy solution and Lipschitz continuous free boundary (i.e. characteristic discontinuity) is established. To achieve this, the problem is formulated as a free boundary pro…
In this paper, both structural and dynamical stabilities of steady transonic shock solutions for one-dimensional Euler-Poission system are investigated. First, a steady transonic shock solution with supersonic backgroumd charge is shown to be structurally stable with respect to small perturbations of the background charge, provided that the electric field is positive at the shock location. Second, any steady transonic shock solution with the supersonic background charge is proved to be dynamically and exponentially stable with respect to small perturbation of the initial data, provided the ele…
In this work we systematically derive the governing equations of supersonic conical flow by projecting the 3D Euler equations onto the unit sphere. These equations result from taking the assumption of conical invariance on the 3D flow field. Under this assumption, the compressible Euler equations reduce to a system defined on the surface of the unit sphere. This compressible flow problem has been successfully used to study steady supersonic flow past cones of arbitrary cross section by reducing the number of spatial dimensions from 3 down to 2 while still capturing many of the relevant 3D effe…
Supersonic flows for the two-dimensional (2D) steady full Euler system are studied. We construct a global non-isentropic rotational supersonic flow in a semi-infinite divergent duct. The flow satisfies the slip condition on the walls of the duct, and the state of the flow is given at the inlet of the duct. The solution is constructed by the method of characteristics. The main difficulty for the global existence is that uniform a priori $C^1$ norm estimate of the solution is hard to obtain, especially when the solution tends to vacuum state. We derive a group of characteristic decompositions fo…
We are concerned with the global existence of entropy solutions of the two-dimensional steady Euler equations for an ideal gas, which undergoes a one-step exothermic chemical reaction under the Arrhenius-type kinetics. The reaction rate function $ϕ(T)$ is assumed to have a positive lower bound. We first consider the Cauchy problem (the initial value problem), that is, seek a supersonic downstream reacting flow when the incoming flow is supersonic, and establish the global existence of entropy solutions when the total variation of the initial data is sufficiently small. Then we analyze the prob…
In this paper, we established the global existence of supersonic entropy solutions with a strong contact discontinuity over Lipschitz wall governed by the two-dimensional steady exothermically reacting Euler equations, when the total variation of both initial data and the slope of Lipschitz wall is sufficiently small. Local and global estimates are developed and a modified Glimm-type functional is carefully designed. Next the validation of the quasi-one-dimensional approximation in the domain bounded by the wall and the strong contact discontinuity is rigorous justified by proving that the dif…
In this paper, we study one-dimensional nonhomogeneous isentropic compressible Euler equations with time-periodic boundary conditions. With the aid of the energy methods, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the time-periodic supersonic solutions after some certain time.
The main purpose of this paper is to provide an effective procedure to study rigorously the relationship between unipolar and bipolar Euler-Poisson system in the perspective of mass. Based on the fact that the mass of an electron is far less than that of an ion, we amplify this property by letting $m_e/m_i\rightarrow 0$ and using two different singular limits to illustrate it, which are zero-electron mass limit and infinity-ion mass limit. We use the method of asymptotic expansion to handle the problem and find that the limiting process from bipolar to unipolar system is actually the process o…
In this paper, we study the global existence and asymptotic behavior of classical solutions near vacuum for the initial-boundary value problem modeling isentropic supersonic flows through divergent ducts. The governing equations are the compressible Euler equations with a small parameter, which can be written as a hyperbolic system in terms of the Riemann invariants with a non-dissipative source. We provide a new result for the global existence of classical solutions to initial-boundary value problems of non-dissipative hyperbolic balance laws without the assumption of small data. The work is …
In our previous work, we have established the existence of transonic characteristic discontinuities separating supersonic flows from a static gas in two-dimensional steady compressible Euler flows under a perturbation with small total variation of the incoming supersonic flow over a solid right-wedge. It is a free boundary problem in Eulerian coordinates and, across the free boundary (characteristic discontinuity), the Euler equations are of elliptic-hyperbolic composite-mixed type. In this paper, we further prove that such a transonic characteristic discontinuity solution is unique and $L^1$-…
We construct a supersonic-sonic smooth patch solution for the two dimensional steady Euler equations in gas dynamics. This patch is extracted from the Frankl problem in the study of transonic flow with local supersonic bubble over an airfoil. Based on the methodology of characteristic decompositions, we establish the global existence and regularity of solutions in a partial hodograph coordinate system in terms of angle variables. The original problem is solved by transforming the solution in the partial hodograph plane back to that in the physical plane. Moreover, the uniform regularity of the…
In this paper, the finite time blow-up of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for full Euler-Poisson equations and isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with repulsive forces or attractive forces in high dimensions $(n\geq3)$ is proved for a large class of initial data. It is not required that the initial data has compact support or contains vacuum in any finite regions.
This paper studies the two-dimensional Euler-Poisson equations associated with either attractive or repulsive forces. We mainly study the Riccati system that governs the flow's gradient. Under a suitable condition, it is shown that the Euler-Poisson system admits global smooth solutions for a large set of initial configurations. This paper is a continuation of our former work [8].
We improve the recent result of Chae & Tadmor in [Comm. Math. Sci. 6(3) (2008) 785-789], proving a one-sided threshold condition which leads to finite-time breakdown of the Euler-Poisson equations in arbitrary dimension n.
Consider the scaling $\varepsilon^{1/2}(x-Vt)\to x,\ \varepsilon^{3/2}t\to t$ in the Euler-Poisson system for ion-acoustic waves \eqref{equ1}. We establish that as $\varepsilon\to 0$, the solutions to such Euler-Poisson system converge globally in time to the solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation.
We prove shock formation for 3D Euler-Poisson system for electron fluid plasma. The shock solution we construct is of large initial data, also compactly supported during the lifespan. In addition, the blowup time and location can be computed explicitly.
We prove that small smooth irrotational but charged perturbations of a constant background are global and go back to equilibrium in the 3D electron Euler-Poissson equation.
We consider the (repulsive) Euler-Poisson system for the electrons in two dimensions and prove that small smooth perturbations of a constant background exist for all time and remain smooth (never develop shocks). This extends to 2D the work of Guo.
For a supersonic Euler flow past a straight wedge whose vertex angle is less than the extreme angle, there exists a shock-front emanating from the wedge vertex, and the shock-front is usually strong especially when the vertex angle of the wedge is large. In this paper, we establish the $L^1$ well-posedness for two-dimensional steady supersonic Euler flows past a Lipschitz wedge whose boundary slope function has small total variation, when the total variation of the incoming flow is sufficiently small. In this case, the Lipschitz wedge perturbs the flow and the waves reflect after interacting w…
We prove the finite time blow-up for $C^1$ solutions to the Euler-Poisson equations in $\Bbb R^n$, $n\geq 1$, with/without background density for initial data satisfying suitable conditions. We also find a sufficient condition for the initial data such that $C^3$ solution breaks down in finite time for the compressible Euler equations for polytropic gas flows.
We consider the problem of supersonic flow of a Chaplygin gas past a delta wing with a shock or rarefaction wave attached to the leading edges. The flow under study is described by the three-dimensional steady Euler system. In conical coordinates, this problem can be reformulated as a boundary value problem for a nonlinear equation of mixed type. The type of this equation depends fully on the solutions of the problem itself, and thus it cannot be determined in advance. We overcome the difficulty by establishing a crucial Lipschitz estimate, and finally prove the unique existence of the solutio…
In this work, we study the behavior of blow-up solutions to the multidimensional restricted Euler--Poisson equations which are the localized version of the full Euler--Poisson system. We provide necessary conditions for the existence of finite-time blow-up solutions in terms of the initial data, and describe the asymptotic behavior of the solutions near blow up times. We also identify a rich set of the initial data which yields global bounded solutions.
We construct a special $C^{1,α}$ blow up solution to the three dimensional system modeling electro-hydrodynamics, which is strongly coupled with incompressible Euler equation and Nernst-Planck-Poisson equation. Our construction lies on the framework established in Elgindi [11] and relies on a special solution to variant spherical Laplacian.
We establish unique existence and stability of subsonic potential flow for steady Euler-Poisson system in a multidimensional nozzle of a finite length when prescribing the electric potential difference on non-insulated boundary from a fixed point at the exit, and prescribing the pressure at the exit of the nozzle. The Euler-Poisson system for subsonic potential flow can be reduced to a nonlinear elliptic system of second order. In this paper, we develop a technique to achieve a priori $C^{1,\alp}$ estimates of solutions to a quasi-linear second order elliptic system with mixed boundary conditi…
We derive an explicit formula for global weak solutions of the one dimensional system of pressure-less Euler-Poisson equations. Our variational formulation is an extension of the well-known formula for entropy solutions of the scalar inviscid Burgers' equation: since the characteristics of the Euler-Poisson equations are parabolas, the representation of their weak solution takes the form of a "quadratic" version of the celebrated Lax-Oleinik variational formula. Three cases are considered. (i) The variational formula recovers the "sticky particle" solution in the attractive case; (ii) It repre…
This paper proves the existence of variational rotating solutions to the compressible non-isentropic Euler-Poisson equations with prescribed total mass. This extends the result of the isentropic case [Auchmuty and Beals, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 1971] to the non-isentropic case. Compared with the previous result of variational rotating solutions in non-isentropic case [Wu, Journal of Differential Equations, 2015], to keep the constraint of a prescribed finite total mass, the author establishes a new variational structure the non-isentropic Euler-Poisson equations.
The Euler-Poisson equations model rotating gaseous stars. Numerous efforts have been made to establish existence and properties of the rotating star solutions. Recent interests in extrasolar planet structures require extension of the model to include a inner rocky core together with its own gravitational potential. In this paper, we discuss various extensions of the classical rotating star results to incorporate a solid core.
We show the continuity of the flow map for quasilinear symmetric hyperbolic systems with general right--hand sides in different functional setting, including weighted Sobolev spaces $H_{s,δ}$. An essential tool to achieve the continuity of the flow map is a low regularity energy estimate. We then apply these results to the Euler--Poisson system which describes various systems of physical interests.
We study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson system describing a plasma made of ions and massless electrons. The analysis is achieved in a domain of $\R^3$ and thus extends former results by Cordier and Grenier [Comm. Partial Differential Equations, 25 (2000), pp.~1099--1113], who dealt with the same problem in a one-dimensional domain without boundary.
This paper analyzes various schemes for the Euler-Poisson-Boltzmann (EPB) model of plasma physics. This model consists of the pressureless gas dynamics equations coupled with the Poisson equation and where the Boltzmann relation relates the potential to the electron density. If the quasi-neutral assumption is made, the Poisson equation is replaced by the constraint of zero local charge and the model reduces to the Isothermal Compressible Euler (ICE) model. We compare a numerical strategy based on the EPB model to a strategy using a reformulation (called REPB formulation). The REPB scheme captu…
In this paper, we study the quasineutral limit of the isothermal Euler-Poisson equation for ions, in a domain with boundary. This is a follow-up to our previous work \cite{GVHKR}, devoted to no-penetration as well as subsonic outflow boundary conditions. We focus here on the case of supersonic outflow velocities. The structure of the boundary layers and the stabilization mechanism are different.
