It is proved that if $S\subset \mathbb P^N$ is a smooth projective surface and $f:S\to \mathbb P^2$ is a generic linear projection branched over a cuspidal curve $B\subset \mathbb P^2$, then the surface $S$ is determined uniquely up to an isomorphism of $S$ by the curve $B$.
The Chisini conjecture asserts that a generic ramified covering over the complex projective plane of degree at least 5 is uniquely determined by its branch curve. We prove this for degree at least 12 using the work of Kulikov (math-AG/9803144).
Chisini's conjecture asserts that for a cuspidal curve $B\subset \mathbb P^2$ a generic morphism $f$ of a smooth projective surface onto $\mathbb P^2$ of degree $\geq 5$, branched along $B$, is unique up to isomorphism. We prove that if $°f$ is greater than the value of some function depending on the degree, genus, and number of cusps of $B$, then the Chisini conjecture holds for $B$. This inequality holds for many different generic morphisms. In particular, it holds for a generic morphism given by a linear subsystem of the $m$th canonical class for almost all surfaces with ample canonical cla…
This paper is devoted to a very classical problem that can be summarized as follows: let S be a non singular compact complex surface, f:S --> P^2 a finite morphism having simple branching, B the branch curve: to what extent does B determine f? The problem was first studied by Chisini who proved that B determines S and f, assuming B to have only nodes and cusps as singularities, the degree d of f to be greater than 5, and a very strong hypothesis on the possible degenerations of B, and posed the question if the first or the third hypothesis could be weakened. Recently Kulikov and Nemirovski pro…
We generalize results of the paper math.AG/9803144, in which Chisini's conjecture on the unique reconstruction of f by the curve B is investigated. For this fibre products of generic coverings are studied. The main inequality bounding the degree of a covering in the case of existence of two nonequivalent coverings with the branch curve B is obtained. This inequality is used for the proof of the Chisini conjecture for m-canonical coverings of surfaces of general type for $m\ge 5$.
Suppose that $C\subset\mathbb P^2$ is a general enough nodal plane curve of degree $>2$, $ν\colon \hat C\to C$ is its normalization, and $π\colon \hat C\to\mathbb P^1$ is a finite morphism simply ramified over the same set of points as a projection $\mathrm{pr}_p\circ ν\colon\hat C \to\mathbb P^1$, where $p\in\mathbb P^2\setminus C$ (if $\mathrm{deg}\, C=3$, one should assume in addition that $\degπ\ne4$). We prove that the morphism $π$ is equivalent to such a projection if and only if it extends to a finite morphism $X\to(\mathbb P^2)^*$ ramified over $C^*$, where $X$ is a smooth surface. As …
In this note, we give an overview of a new technique for studying Brill--Noether curves in projective space via degeneration. In particular, we give a roadmap to the proof of the Maximal Rank Conjecture.
We propose, motivate and give evidence for a relation between the $\mathcal D$-modules of the quantum cohomology of a smooth complex projective manifold $X$ and a projective bundle $\PP(\oplus L_i)$ over $X$.
The Grothendieck--Serre conjecture predicts that every generically trivial torsor under a reductive group scheme $G$ over a regular local ring $R$ is trivial. The mixed characteristic case of the conjecture is widely open. We consider the following setup. Let $A$ be a mixed characteristic DVR, $G$ a reductive group scheme over $A$, $X$ an irreducible smooth projective $A$-scheme, $\mathcal G$ a principal $G$-bundle over $X$. Suppose $\mathcal G$ is generically trivial. We prove that in this case $\mathcal G$ is Zariski locally trivial. This result confirms the conjecture.
Let X be a smooth projective threefold, and let A be an ample line bundle such that $K_X+A$ is nef. We show that if $K_X$ or $-K_X$ is pseudoeffective, the adjoint bundle $K_X+A$ has global sections. We also give a very short proof of the Beltrametti-Sommese conjecture in dimension three, recently proven by Fukuma: if A is an ample line bundle such that $K_X+2A$ is nef, the adjoint bundle $K_X+2A$ has global sections.
Let $f(\bf z,\bar{\bf z})$ be a strongly mixed homogeneous polynomial of 3 variables $\bf z=(z_1,z_2,z_3)$ of polar degree $q$ with an isolated singularity at the origin. It defines a smooth Riemann surface $C$ in the complex projective space $\mathbb P^2$. The fundamental group of the complement $\mathbb P^2\setminus C$ is cyclic group of order $q$ if $f$ is homogeneous polynomial without $\bar{\bf z}$. We propose a conjecture that this may be even true for mixed homogeneous polynomials by giving several supporting examples.
In 1984, H. Yoshihara conjectured that if two plane irreducible curves have isomorphic complements, they are projectively equivalent, and proved the conjecture for a special family of unicuspidal curves. Recently, J. Blanc gave counterexamples of degree 39 to this conjecture, but none of these is unicuspidal. In this text, we give a new family of counterexamples to the conjecture, all of them being unicuspidal, of degree 4m + 1 for any m \geq 2. In particular, we have counterexamples of degree 9, which seems to be the lowest possible degree.
We collect some results on endomorphisms on projective varieties related with the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture. We discuss certain condition on automorphism groups of projective varieties and positivity conditions on leading real eigendivisors of self-morphisms. We prove Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for endomorphisms on projective bundles on a smooth Fano variety of Picard number one. In the last section, we discuss endomorphisms and augmented base loci of their eigendivisors.
In an earlier paper we conjectured a relation between the quantum $\mathcal D$-modules of a smooth variety $X$ and the projectivisation of a direct sum of line bundles over it. In this paper we prove the conjecture when $X$ is a complete intersection in a toric variety. We also use the conjecture to show that the relations of the small quantum cohomology ring of $X$ that come from differential operators lift to the projective bundle. The basic cohomology relation of the projective bundle deforms to a relation in the small quantum cohomology.
In this paper we study the positivity of the cotangent bundle of projective manifolds. We conjecture that the cotangent bundle is pseudoeffective if and only the manifold has non-zero symmetric differentials. We confirm this conjecture for most projective surfaces that are not of general type.
The following conjecture arose out of discussions between B. Harbourne, J. Roé, C. Cilberto and R. Miranda: for a smooth projective surface $X$ there exists a positive constant $c_X$ such that $h^1(\mathcal O_X(C))\le c_X h^0(\mathcal O_X(C))$ for every prime divisor $C$ on $X$. We show that the conjecture is true for some smooth projective surfaces with Picard number 2.
Let X be a smooth quasi-projective variety over the algebraic closure of the rational number field. We show that the cycle map of the higher Chow group to Deligne cohomology is injective and the higher Hodge cycles are generated by the image of the cycle map as conjectured by Beilinson and Jannsen, if the cycle map to Deligne cohomology is injective and the Hodge conjecture is true for certain smooth projective varieties over the algebraic closure of the rational number field. We also verify the conjecture on the surjectivity in the case of the complement of a union of general hypersurfaces in…
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. A recent conjecture of S. Kovács states that if t\ he $p^{\text{th}}$-exterior power of the tangent bundle $T_X$ contains the $p^{\text{th}}$-exterior power of an ample vector bundle, then $X$ is either a projective space or a smooth quadric hypersurface. This conjecture is appealing since it is a common generalization of Mori's, Wahl's, Andreatt\ a-Wísniewski's, and Araujo-Druel-Kovács's characterizations of these spaces. In this paper I give a proof affirming this conjecture for varieties with Picard number 1.
In this paper, we construct compactifications of $SL_2(\mathbb{C})$-character varieties of $n$-punctured projective line and study the boundary divisor of the compactifications. This study is motivated by the conjecture for the configuration of the boundary divisor, due to C. Simpson. We verify the conjecture for a few examples.
We prove that the non-vanishing conjecture and the log minimal model conjecture for projective log canonical pairs can be reduced to the non-vanishing conjecture for smooth projective varieties such that the boundary divisor is zero.
In this paper, we prove that the statement: ``The (Generalized) Hodge Conjecture holds for codimension-two cycles on a smooth projective variety $X$" is a birationally invariant statement, that is, if the statement is true for $X$, it is also true for all smooth varieties $X'$ which are birationally equivalent to $X$. We also prove the analogous result for 1-cycles. As direct corollaries, the Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimension less than or equal to five, and, the Generalized Hodge Conjecture holds for smooth rational projective manifolds with dimensi…
We show that very general hypersurfaces in odd-dimensional simplicial projective toric varieties verifying a certain combinatorial property satisfy the Hodge conjecture (these include projective spaces). This gives a connection between the Oda conjecture and Hodge conjecture. We also give an explicit criterion which depends on the degree for very general hypersurfaces for the combinatorial condition to be verified.
We prove the arithmetic Hodge index and hard Lefschetz conjectures for the Grassmannian $G=G(2,N)$ parametrizing lines in projective space, for the natural arithmetic Lefschetz operator defined via the Plücker embedding of $G$ in projective space. The analysis of the Hodge index inequalities involves estimates on certain Racah polynomials.
We study the equivariantly perturbed mirror Landau-Ginzburg model of the projective line. We show that the Eynard-Orantin recursion on this model encodes all genus all descendants equivariant Gromov-Witten invariants of the projective line. The non-equivariant limit of this result is the Norbury-Scott conjecture, while by taking large radius limit we recover the Bouchard-Marino conjecture on simple Hurwitz numbers.
Hartshorne's conjecture about vector bundles on projective space states that any rank 2 vector bundle on n-dimensional projective space splits as soon as n is at least 7. Klyachko has shown that Hartshorne's conjecture is true when the vector bundles are torus equivariant. Moreover, recent work of Ilten and Süss generalizes Klyachko's work to the case of a smaller rank torus action on projective space. In this note we give a new, direct proof that torus rank 2 bundles split that avoids a description of the category of torus equivariant vector bundles.
Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity is an important invariant of projective algebraic varieties. A well known conjecture due to Eisenbud and Goto gives a bound for regularity in terms of the codimension and degree. This conjecture is known to be true for curves (Gruson-Lazarsfeld-Peskine) and smooth surfaces (Pinkham, Lazarsfeld), but not in general. The purpose of this paper is to give new bounds for the regularity of smooth varieties in dimensions 3 and 4 that are only slightly worse than the optimal ones suggested by the conjecture. Our method yields new bounds up to dimension 14, but as they ge…
We know that semi-regular sub-varieties satisfy the variational Hodge conjecture i.e., given a family of smooth projective varieties $π:\mathcal{X} \to B$, a special fiber $\mathcal{X}_o$ and a semi-regular subvariety $Z \subset \mathcal{X}_o$, the cohomology class corresponding to $Z$ remains a Hodge class (as $\mathcal{X}_o$ deforms along $B$) if and only if $Z$ remains an algebraic cycle. In this article, we investigate examples of such sub-varieties. In particular, we prove that any smooth projective variety $Z$ of dimension $n$ is a semi-regular sub-variety of a smooth projective hypersur…
In the first part of this paper, we show that the assertion "T_pH_k(X,Q)=G_pH_k(X,Q)" (which is called the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture) is a birationally invariant statement for smooth projective varieties X when p=dim(X)-2 and when p=1. We also establish the Friedlander-Mazur conjecture in certain dimensions. More precisely, for a smooth projective variety X, we show that the topological filtration T_pH_{2p+1}(X,Q) coincides with the geometric filtration G_pH_{2p+1}(X,Q) for all p. (Friedlander and Mazur had previously shown that T_pH_{2p}(X,Q})=G_pH_{2p}(X,Q)). As a corollary, we conclude t…
T. Szemberg proposed in 2001 a generalization to arbitrary varieties of M. Nagata's 1959 open conjecture, which claims that the Seshadri constant of r>9 very general points of the projective plane is maximal. Here we prove that Nagata's original conjecture implies Szemberg's for all smooth surfaces X with an ample divisor L generating its Neron-Severi group and such that L^2 is a square. More generally, we prove that the (n-1)-dimensional Seshadri constant of an ample divisor L on a projective variety X of dimension n at r very general points is bounded below by the product of the (n-1)-dimens…
We prove the finiteness of log pluricanonical representations for projective log canonical pairs with semi-ample log canonical divisor. As a corollary, we obtain that the log canonical divisor of a projective semi log canonical pair is semi-ample if and only if so is the log canonical divisor of its normalization. We also treat many other applications.
Prompted by results of Guardo, Van Tuyl and the second author for lines in projective 3 space, we develop asymptotic upper bounds for the least degree of a homogeneous form vanishing to order at least m on a union of disjoint r dimensional planes in projective n space for n at least 2r+1. These considerations lead to new conjectures that suggest that the well known conjecture of Nagata for points in the projective plane is not sporadic, but rather a special case of a more general phenomenon.
We prove that the product of an Enriques surface and a very general curve of genus at least 1 does not satisfy the integral Hodge conjecture for 1-cycles. This provides the first examples of smooth projective complex threefolds of Kodaira dimension zero for which the integral Hodge conjecture fails, and the first examples of non-algebraic torsion cohomology classes of degree 4 on smooth projective complex threefolds.
We discuss two conjectures by Francesco Severi and Joe Harris about the irreducibility and the dimension of the Hilbert scheme parameterizing smooth projective curves of given degree and genus.
Inspired by their results on the Chow rings of projective K3 surfaces, Beauville and Voisin made the following conjecture: given a projective hyperkaehler manifold, for any algebraic cycle which is a polynomial with rational coefficients of Chern classes of the tangent bundle and line bundles, it is rationally equivalent to zero if and only if it is numerically equivalent to zero. In this paper, we prove the Beauville-Voisin conjecture for generalized Kummer varieties.
Let $f:X\to Y$ be a fibration from a smooth projective 3-fold to a smooth projective curve, over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p >5$. We prove that if the generic fiber $X_η$ has big canonical divisor $K_{X_η}$, then $$κ(X)\geκ(Y) + κ(X_η).$$
The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture says that for every complex projective algebraic variety $X$ of general type there exists a proper algebraic subvariety of $X$ containing all nonconstant entire holomorphic curves $f:\mathbb{C} \to X$. Using equivariant localisation on the Demailly-Semple jet differentials bundle we give an affirmative answer to this conjecture for generic projective hypersurfaces $X \subset \mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of degree $\mathrm{deg}(X) \ge n^{9n}$.
Sommese has conjectured a classification of smooth projective varieties X containing, as an ample divisor, a P^d-bundle Y over a smooth variety Z. This conjecture is known if d>1, if dim(X)<5, or if Z admits a finite morphism to an Abelian variety. We confirm the conjecture if the Picard rank rho(Z)=1, or if Z is not uniruled. In general we reduce the conjecture to a conjectural characterization of projective space: namely that if W is a smooth projective variety, E is an ample vector bundle on W, and Hom(E, T_W) is non-zero, then W is isomorphic to P^n.
We give evidence for a uniformization-type conjecture, that any algebraic variety can be altered into a variety endowed with a tower of smooth fibrations of relative dimension one.
We prove the Nonvanishing conjecture for uniruled projective log canonical pairs of dimension $n$, assuming the Nonvanishing conjecture for smooth projective varieties in dimension $n-1$. We also show that the existence of good minimal models for non-uniruled projective klt pairs in dimension $n$ implies the existence of good minimal models for projective log canonical pairs in dimension $n$.
When the Picard number $ρ(X)=2$, we prove that if either the Kodaira dimension $κ(X)=1$ and $X$ has a negative curve or $X$ has two negative curves, then this conjecture holds for $X$.
In this paper, we prove BG-type inequality conjecture for threefolds in the title. In particular, there exist Bridgeland stability conditions on these threefolds.
The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture says that for every complex projective algebraic variety $X$ of general type there exists a proper algebraic subvariety of $X$ containing all nonconstant entire holomorphic curves $f:\mathbb{C} \to X$. We construct a compactification of the invariant jet differentials bundle over complex manifolds motivated by an algebraic model of Morin singularities and we develop an iterated residue formula using equivariant localisation for tautological integrals over it. We show that the polynomial GGL conjecture for a generic projective hypersurface of degree $\mathrm{…
