This paper is devoted to a very classical problem that can be summarized as follows: let S be a non singular compact complex surface, f:S --> P^2 a finite morphism having simple branching, B the branch curve: to what extent does B determine f? The problem was first studied by Chisini who proved that B determines S and f, assuming B to have only nodes and cusps as singularities, the degree d of f to be greater than 5, and a very strong hypothesis on the possible degenerations of B, and posed the question if the first or the third hypothesis could be weakened. Recently Kulikov and Nemirovski proved the result for d >= 12, and B having only nodes and cusps as singularities. In this paper we weaken the hypothesis about the singularities of B: we generalize the theorem of Kulikov and Nemirovski for B having only singularities of type {x^n=y^m}, in the additional hypothesis of smoothness for the ramification divisor. Moreover we exhibit a family of counterexamples showing that our additional hypothesis is necessary.
The Chisini conjecture asserts that a generic ramified covering over the complex projective plane of degree at least 5 is uniquely determined by its branch curve. We prove this for degree at least 12 using the work of Kulikov (math-AG/9803144).
Chisini's conjecture asserts that for a cuspidal curve $B\subset \mathbb P^2$ a generic morphism $f$ of a smooth projective surface onto $\mathbb P^2$ of degree $\geq 5$, branched along $B$, is unique up to isomorphism. We prove that if $°f$ is greater than the value of some function depending on the degree, genus, and number of cusps of $B$, then the Chisini conjecture holds for $B$. This inequality holds for many different generic morphisms. In particular, it holds for a generic morphism given by a linear subsystem of the $m$th canonical class for almost all surfaces with ample canonical cla…
It is proved that if $S\subset \mathbb P^N$ is a smooth projective surface and $f:S\to \mathbb P^2$ is a generic linear projection branched over a cuspidal curve $B\subset \mathbb P^2$, then the surface $S$ is determined uniquely up to an isomorphism of $S$ by the curve $B$.
We generalize results of the paper math.AG/9803144, in which Chisini's conjecture on the unique reconstruction of f by the curve B is investigated. For this fibre products of generic coverings are studied. The main inequality bounding the degree of a covering in the case of existence of two nonequivalent coverings with the branch curve B is obtained. This inequality is used for the proof of the Chisini conjecture for m-canonical coverings of surfaces of general type for $m\ge 5$.
In this manuscript we prove that if two cuspidal plane curves have equivalent braid monodromy factorizations, then they are smoothly isotopic in the plane. As a consequence of this and the Chisini conjecture, we obtain that if two discriminant curves (or branch curves in other terminology) of generic projections (to the plane) of surfaces of general type imbedded in a projective space by means of a multiple canonical class have equivalent braid monodromy factorizations, then the surfaces are diffeomorphic (if we consider them as real 4-folds).
We state a version of the crepant resolution conjecture for total ancestor potentials for surface singularities, and reduce the conjecture to the quantum McKay correspondence conjecture of J.Bryan and A.Gholampour and a vanishing conjecture for Hurwitz-Hodge integrals. In particular, for singularities of type A, we prove the conjecture. We also suggest an approach towards a proof for the general cases by Teleman's reconstruction theorem for semisimple cohomological field theories.
The Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture says that for every complex projective algebraic variety $X$ of general type there exists a proper algebraic subvariety of $X$ containing all nonconstant entire holomorphic curves $f:\mathbb{C} \to X$. We construct a compactification of the invariant jet differentials bundle over complex manifolds motivated by an algebraic model of Morin singularities and we develop an iterated residue formula using equivariant localisation for tautological integrals over it. We show that the polynomial GGL conjecture for a generic projective hypersurface of degree $\mathrm{…
A conic bundle is a contraction $X\to Z$ between normal varieties of relative dimension $1$ such that $-K_X$ is relatively ample. We prove a conjecture of Shokurov which predicts that, if $X\to Z$ is a conic bundle such that $X$ has canonical singularities and $Z$ is $\mathbb{Q}$-Gorenstein, then $Z$ is always $\frac{1}{2}$-lc, and the multiplicities of the fibers over codimension $1$ points are bounded from above by $2$. Both values $\frac{1}{2}$ and $2$ are sharp. This is achieved by solving a more general conjecture of Shokurov on singularities of bases of lc-trivial fibrations of relative …
This paper is a sequel to [He7]. There a notion of marking of isolated hypersurface singularities was defined, and a moduli space $M_μ^{mar}$ for marked singularities in one $μ$-homotopy class of isolated hypersurface singularities was established. One can consider it as a global $μ$-constant stratum or as a Teichmüller space for singularities. It comes together with a $μ$-constant monodromy group $G^{mar}\subset G_Z$. Here $G_Z$ is the group of automorphisms of a Milnor lattice which respect the Seifert form. It was conjectured that $M_μ^{mar}$ is connected. This is equivalent to $G^{mar}= G_…
The monodromy conjecture is an umbrella term for several conjectured relationships between poles of zeta functions, monodromy eigenvalues and roots of Bernstein-Sato polynomials in arithmetic geometry and singularity theory. Even the weakest of these relations -- the Denef--Loeser conjecture on topological zeta functions -- is open for surface singularities. We prove it for a wide class of multidimensional singularities that are non-degenerate with respect to their Newton polyhedra, including all such singularities of functions of four variables. A crucial difference from the known case of thr…
In 1982, Yano proposed a conjecture predicting the $b$-exponents of an irreducible plane curve singularity which is generic in its equisingularity class. In this article we prove the conjecture for the case of two Puiseux pairs and monodromy with distinct eigenvalues. The hypothesis on the monodromy implies that the $b$-exponents coincide with the opposite of the roots of the Bernstein polynomial, and we compute the roots of the Bernstein polynomial.
It was conjectured that multiplicity of a singularity is bi-Lipschitz invariant. We disprove this conjecture, constructing examples of bi-Lipschitz equivalent complex algebraic singularities with different values of multiplicity.
We show that Yau's conjecture on the inequalities for (n-1)-th Griffiths number and (n-1)-th Hironaka number does not hold for isolated rigid Gorenstein singularities of dimension greater than 2. But his conjecture on the inequality for (n-1)-th Griffiths number is true for irregular singularities.
In this paper we study singularities in arbitrary characteristic. We propose Finite Determination Conjecture for Mather-Jacobian minimal log discrepancies in terms of jet schemes of a singularity. The conjecture is equivalent to the boundedness of the number of the blow-ups to obtain a prime divisor which computes the Mather-Jacobian minimal log discrepancy. We also show that this conjecture yields some basic properties of singularities; e.g. openness of Mather-Jacobian (log) canonical singularities, stability of these singularities under small deformations and lower semi-continuity of Mather-…
In this article, we propose a boundedness conjecture for the regional fundamental group of klt singularities. We prove that this boundedness conjecture, the Zariski closedness of the diminished base locus of $K_X$, and an upper bound for minimal log discrepancies, imply the termination of flips with scaling. We prove the boundedness conjecture in the case of toric singularities, quotient singularites, isolated $3$-fold singularities, and exceptional singularities.
The current work will appear in a Celebratio Mathematica volume in honor of Walter Neumann. We summarize results and methods from our long-time collaboration with Neumann, especially the motivation for the introduction of splice diagrams to define singularities of splice type and splice-quotient singularities. The Casson Invariant Conjecture and Milnor Fiber Conjectures are discussed, as well as some open questions about hypersurface and complete intersection singularities with integral homology sphere link.
We unify and generalize formulas obtained by Campillo, Delgado and Gusein-Zade in their series of articles. Positive results are established for rational and minimally elliptic singularities. By examples and counterexamples we also try to find the `limits' of these identities. Connections with the Seiberg-Witten Invariant Conjecture and Semigroup Density Conjecture are discussed.
We prove the "Gluing Conjecture" on the spectral side of the categorical geometric Langlands correspondence. The key tool is the structure of crystal on the category of singularities, which allows to reduce the conjecture to the question of homological triviality of certain homotopy types. These homotopy types are obtained by gluing from a global version of Springer fibers.
Let $f\colon X\to Z$ be a Mori fibre space. McKernan conjectured that the singularities of $Z$ are bounded in terms of the singularities of $X$. Shokurov generalised this to pairs: let $(X,B)$ be a klt pair and $f\colon X\to Z$ a contraction such that $K_X+B\sim_\R 0/Z$ and that the general fibres of $f$ are Fano type varieties; adjunction for fibre spaces produces a discriminant divisor $B_Z$ and a moduli divisor $M_Z$ on $Z$. it is then conjectured that the singularities of $(Z,B_Z+M_Z)$ are bounded in terms of the singularities of $(X,B)$. We prove Shokurov conjecture when $(F,\Supp B_F)$ b…
The conjecture called algebraic Montgomery-Yang problem is still open for rational $\mathbb{Q}$-homology projective planes with cyclic quotient singularities having ample canonical divisor. All known such surfaces have a special birational behavior called a cascade. In this note, we establish algebraic Montgomery-Yang problem assuming the cascade conjecture, which claims that every rational $\mathbb{Q}$-homology projective planes with quotient singularities having ample canonical divisor admits a cascade.
It is a conjecture of Kollár that a variety $X$ with rational singularities in some open subvariety $U$ has a rationalification; that is, a proper, birational morphism $f: Y \rightarrow X$ such that $Y$ has rational singularities, and which is an isomorphism over $U$. Whether this is true is already unknown in the case of a (normal) threefold with rational singularities along a curve $C$ except at a single point $p \in C$. There is an analogous conjecture for demi-normal varieties $X$, where we must insist that $Y$ has only semi-rational singularities. Our main result is that if a stronger ver…
We prove that the signature of the Milnor fiber of smoothings of a $2$-dimensional isolated complete intersection singularity does not exceed the negative number determined by the geometric genus, the embedding dimension and the number of irreducible components of the exceptional set of the minimal resolution, which implies Durfee's weak conjecture and a partial answer to Kerner--Némethi's conjecture.
We study Ruan's \textit{cohomological crepant resolution conjecture} for orbifolds with transversal ADE singularities. In the $A_n$-case we compute both the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring $H^*_{\rm CR}([Y])$ and the quantum corrected cohomology ring $H^*(Z)(q_1,...,q_n)$. The former is achieved in general, the later up to some additional, technical assumptions. We construct an explicit isomorphism between $H^*_{\rm CR}([Y])$ and $H^*(Z)(-1)$ in the $A_1$-case, verifying Ruan's conjecture. In the $A_n$-case, the family $H^*(Z)(q_1,...,q_n)$ is not defined for $q_1=...=q_n=-1$. This implies that the …
In 1971, Zariski proposed some questions in Theory of Singularities. One of such problems is the so-called, nowadays, Zariski's multiplicity conjecture. In this work, we consider the version of this conjecture for families. We answer positively Zariski's multiplicity conjecture for a special class of non-isolated singularities.
In 1982, Tamaki Yano proposed a conjecture predicting the set of b-exponents of an irreducible plane curve singularity germ which is generic in its equisingularity class. In \cite{ACLM-Yano2} we proved the conjecture for the case in which the germ has two Puiseux pairs and its algebraic monodromy has distinct eigenvalues. In this article we aim to study the Bernstein polynomial for any function with the hypotheses above. In particular the set of all common roots of those Bernstein polynomials is given. We provide also bounds for some analytic invariants of singularities and illustrate the comp…
We give partial answers to a metric version of Zariski's multiplicity conjecture. In particular, we prove the multiplicity of complex analytic surface (not necessarily isolated) singularities in $\mathbb{C}^3$ is a bi-Lipschitz invariant.
We prove a "strong" Durfee-type inequality for isolated hypersurface surface singularities, which implies Durfee's strong conjecture for such singularities with non-negative topological Euler number of the exceptional set of the minimal resolution.
In a recent paper, M. Green and P. Griffiths used R. Thomas' works on nodal hypersurfaces to establish the equivalence of the Hodge conjecture and the existence of certain singular admissible normal functions. Inspired by their work, we study normal functions using M. Saito's mixed Hodge modules and prove that the existence of singularities of the type considered by Griffiths and Green is equivalent to the Hodge conjecture. Several of the intermediate results, including a relative version of the weak Lefschetz theorem for perverse sheaves, are of independent interest.
We study topological zeta functions of complex plane curve singularities using toric modifications and further developments. As applications of the research method, we prove that the topological zeta function is a topological invariant for complex plane curve singularities, we give a short and new proof of the monodromy conjecture for plane curves.
We study Ruan's "cohomological crepant resolution conjecture" (see math.AG/0108195) for orbifolds with transversal ADE singularities. Let [Y] be such an orbifold, Y its coarse moduli space and Z the crepant resolution of Y. Following Ruan [math.AG/0108195], we have a deformation of the cohomology ring H^*(Z) using some Gromov-Witten invariants of Z. The resulting family of rings will be denoted by H^*(Z)(q_1,...,q_n), where q_1,...,q_n are complex parameters. In the A_n case we compute both the orbifold cohomology ring H^*_{orb}([Y]) and the family H^*(Z)(q_1,...,q_n). The former is achieved i…
In 2011 Lemahieu and Van Proeyen proved the Monodromy Conjecture for the local topological zeta function of a non-degenerated surface singularity. We start from their work and obtain the same result for Igusa's p-adic and the motivic zeta function. In the p-adic case, this is, for a polynomial f in Z[x,y,z] satisfying f(0,0,0)=0 and non-degenerated with respect to its Newton polyhedron, we show that every pole of the local p-adic zeta function of f induces an eigenvalue of the local monodromy of f at some point of the complex zero locus of f close to the origin. Essentially the entire paper is…
In 1982, Tamaki Yano proposed a conjecture predicting how is the set of $b$-exponents of an irreducible plane curve singularity germ which is generic in its equisingularity class. In 1986, Pi.~Cassou-Noguès proved the conjecture for the one Puiseux pair case. In a previous work the authors proved the conjecture for two Puiseux pairs germs whose complex algebraic monodromy has distinct eigenvalues. A natural problem induced by Yano's conjecture is, for a generic equisingular deformation of an isolated plane curve singularity germ to study how the set of $b$-exponents depends on the topology of …
Let $C$ be an irreducible projective plane curve in the complex projective space ${\mathbb{P}}^2$. The classification of such curves, up to the action of the automorphism group $PGL(3,{\mathbb{C}})$ on ${\mathbb{P}}^2$, is a very difficult open problem with many interesting connections. The main goal is to determine, for a given $d$, whether there exists a projective plane curve of degree $d$ having a fixed number of singularities of given topological type. In this note we are mainly interested in the case when $C$ is a rational curve. The aim of this article is to present some of the old conj…
We prove an all genera version of the Crepant Resolution Conjecture of Ruan and Bryan-Graber for type A surface singularities. We are based on a method that explicitly computes Hurwitz-Hodge integrals described in an earlier paper and some recent results by Liu-Xu for some intersection numbers on the Deligne-Mumford moduli spaces. We also generalize our results to some three-dimensional orbifolds.
This paper deals with the Nash problem, which claims that there are as many families of arcs on a singular germ of surface $U$ as there are essential components of the exceptional divisor in the desingularisation of this singularity. Let $\mathcal{H}=\bigcup \bar{N_α}$ be a particular decomposition of the set of arcs on $U$, described later on. We give two new conditions to insure that $\bar{N_α}\not \subset \bar{N_β}$, $α\not = β$; more precisely, for the first one, we claim that if there exists $f \in {\mathcal{O}}_{U}$ such that $ord_{E_α}(f)<ord_{E_β}(f)$, where $E_α, E_β$ are exceptional d…
The Hodge conjecture is shown to be equivalent to a question about the homology of very ample divisors with ordinary double point singularities. The infinitesimal version of the result is also discussed.
Motivated by Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for log canonical thresholds, we propose an inductive point of view on singularities of pairs, in the case when the ambient variety is smooth. Our main result characterizes the log canonicity of a pair in dimension N+1 by the log canonicity of another pair (not effective, in general) in dimension N.
We prove an upper bound on the log canonical threshold of a hypersurface that satisfies a certain power condition and use it to prove several generalizations of Igusa's conjecture on exponential sums, with the log-canonical threshold in the exponent of the estimates. We show that this covers optimally all situations of the conjectures for non-rational singularities, by comparing the log canonical threshold with a local notion of the motivic oscillation index.
We study log canonical thresholds (also called global log canonical threshold or $α$-invariant) of $\mathbb{R}$-linear systems. We prove existence of positive lower bounds in different settings, in particular, proving a conjecture of Ambro. We then show that the Borisov-Alexeev-Borisov conjecture holds, that is, given a natural number $d$ and a positive real number $ε$, the set of Fano varieties of dimension $d$ with $ε$-log canonical singularities forms a bounded family. This implies that birational automorphism groups of rationally connected varieties are Jordan which in particular answers a…
We construct a collection of higher Chow cycles on certain surfaces which degenerate to an arrangement of planes in general position. When its degree is 4, this construction gives a new explicit proof of the Hodge-D-Conjecture for a certain type of K3 surfaces. As an application, we also construct a certain type of threefolds with non trivial Griffiths group.
We consider suspension hypersurface singularities of type g=f(x,y)+z^n, where f is an irreducible plane curve singularity. For such germs, we prove that the link of g determines completely the Newton pairs of f and the integer n except for two pathological cases, which can be completely described. Even in the pathological cases, the link and the Milnor number of g determine uniquely the Newton pairs of f and n. In particular, for such g, we verify Zariski's conjecture about the multiplicity. The result also supports the following conjecture formulated in the paper. If the link of an isolated h…
