Chisini's conjecture asserts that for a cuspidal curve $B\subset \mathbb P^2$ a generic morphism $f$ of a smooth projective surface onto $\mathbb P^2$ of degree $\geq 5$, branched along $B$, is unique up to isomorphism. We prove that if $°f$ is greater than the value of some function depending on the degree, genus, and number of cusps of $B$, then the Chisini conjecture holds for $B$. This inequality holds for many different generic morphisms. In particular, it holds for a generic morphism given by a linear subsystem of the $m$th canonical class for almost all surfaces with ample canonical class.
The Chisini conjecture asserts that a generic ramified covering over the complex projective plane of degree at least 5 is uniquely determined by its branch curve. We prove this for degree at least 12 using the work of Kulikov (math-AG/9803144).
It is proved that if $S\subset \mathbb P^N$ is a smooth projective surface and $f:S\to \mathbb P^2$ is a generic linear projection branched over a cuspidal curve $B\subset \mathbb P^2$, then the surface $S$ is determined uniquely up to an isomorphism of $S$ by the curve $B$.
This paper is devoted to a very classical problem that can be summarized as follows: let S be a non singular compact complex surface, f:S --> P^2 a finite morphism having simple branching, B the branch curve: to what extent does B determine f? The problem was first studied by Chisini who proved that B determines S and f, assuming B to have only nodes and cusps as singularities, the degree d of f to be greater than 5, and a very strong hypothesis on the possible degenerations of B, and posed the question if the first or the third hypothesis could be weakened. Recently Kulikov and Nemirovski pro…
We generalize results of the paper math.AG/9803144, in which Chisini's conjecture on the unique reconstruction of f by the curve B is investigated. For this fibre products of generic coverings are studied. The main inequality bounding the degree of a covering in the case of existence of two nonequivalent coverings with the branch curve B is obtained. This inequality is used for the proof of the Chisini conjecture for m-canonical coverings of surfaces of general type for $m\ge 5$.
Suppose that $C\subset\mathbb P^2$ is a general enough nodal plane curve of degree $>2$, $ν\colon \hat C\to C$ is its normalization, and $π\colon \hat C\to\mathbb P^1$ is a finite morphism simply ramified over the same set of points as a projection $\mathrm{pr}_p\circ ν\colon\hat C \to\mathbb P^1$, where $p\in\mathbb P^2\setminus C$ (if $\mathrm{deg}\, C=3$, one should assume in addition that $\degπ\ne4$). We prove that the morphism $π$ is equivalent to such a projection if and only if it extends to a finite morphism $X\to(\mathbb P^2)^*$ ramified over $C^*$, where $X$ is a smooth surface. As …
Given any smooth toric surface S, we prove a SYM-HILB correspondence which relates the 3-point, degree zero, extended Gromov-Witten invariants of the n-fold symmetric product stack [Sym^n(S)] of S to the 3-point extremal Gromov-Witten invariants of the Hilbert scheme Hilb^n(S) of n points on S. As we do not specialize the values of the quantum parameters involved, this result proves a strengthening of Ruan's Cohomological Crepant Resolution Conjecture for the Hilbert-Chow morphism from Hilb^n(S) to Sym^n(S) and yields a method of reconstructing the cup product for Hilb^n(S) from the orbifold i…
Tsuzuki has conjectured that for crystals with Frobenius and connection over a local field k((t)), the embedding of the category of overconvergent crystals into the category of convergent crystals is fully faithful. We prove Tsuzuki's conjecture restricted to the subcategory of potentially semistable (or quasi-unipotent) crystals, following de Jong's proof of a slightly weaker result. We also prove Tsuzuki's conjecture restricted to crystals with at most two distinct slopes.
Let $π: X \to Y$ be a morphism of projective varieties and suppose that $α$ is a pseudo-effective numerical cycle class satisfying $π_*α= 0$. A conjecture of Debarre, Jiang, and Voisin predicts that $α$ is a limit of classes of effective cycles contracted by $π$. We establish new cases of the conjecture for higher codimension cycles. In particular we prove a strong version when $X$ is a fourfold and $π$ has relative dimension one.
The Hitchin morphism is a map from the moduli space of Higgs bundles $\mathscr{M}_X$ to the Hitchin base $\mathscr{B}_X$, where $X$ is a smooth projective variety. When $X$ has dimension at least two, this morphism is not surjective in general. Recently, Chen-Ngô introduced a closed subscheme $\mathscr{A}_X$ of $\mathscr{B}_X$, which is called the space of spectral data. They proved that the Hitchin morphism factors through $\mathscr{A}_X$ and conjectured that $\mathscr{A}_X$ is the image of the Hitchin morphism. We prove that when $X$ is a smooth projective surface, this conjecture is true fo…
Given a morphism between complex projective varieties, we make several conjectures on the relations between the set of pseudo-effective (co)homology classes which are annihilated by pushforward and the set of classes of varieties contracted by the morphism. We prove these conjectures for classes of curves or divisors. We also prove that one of these conjectures implies Grothendieck's generalized Hodge conjecture for varieties with Hodge coniveau at least 1.

In a work of Costa and Miró-Roig state the following conjecture: Every smooth complete toric Fano variety has a full strongly exceptional collection of line bundles. The goal of this article is to prove it for toric Fano 3-folds.
We combine the Bondal-Uehara method for producing exceptional collections on toric varieties with a result of the first author and Favero to expand the set of varieties satisfying Orlov's Conjecture on derived dimension.
Let $\Cal C,\Cal C'$ be curves over a base scheme $S$ with $g(\Cal C)\ge 2$. Then the functor $T\mapsto\{$generically smooth $T$-morphisms $T\times_S\Cal C'\to T\times_S\Cal C\}$ from $((S$-schemes)) to ((sets)) is represented by a quasi-finite unramified $S$-scheme. From this one can deduce that for any two integers $g\ge 2$ and $g'$, there is an integer $M(g,g')$ such that for any two curves $C,C'$ over any field $k$ with $g(C)=g$, $g(C')=g'$, there are at most $M(g,g')$ separable $k$-morphisms $C'\to C$. It is conjectured that the arithmetic function $M(g,g')$ is bounded by a linear functio…
In this paper, we prove that Ruan's Cohomological Crepant Resolution Conjecture holds for the Hilbert-Chow morphisms. There are two main ideas in the proof. The first one is to use the representation theoretic approach proposed in [QW] which involves vertex operator techniques. The second is to prove certain universality structures about the 3-pointed genus-0 extremal Gromov-Witten invariants of the Hilbert schemes by using the indexing techniques from [LiJ], the product formula from [Beh2] and the co-section localization from [KL1, KL2, LL]. We then reduce Ruan's Conjecture from the case of a…
In this paper, we explore the structure of the Hitchin morphism for higher dimensional varieties. We show that the Hitchin morphism factors through a closed subscheme of the Hitchin base, which is in general a non-linear subspace of lower dimension. We conjecture that the resulting morphism, which we call the spectral data morphism, is surjective. In the course of the proof, we establish connections between the Hitchin morphisms for higher dimensional varieties, the invariant theory of the commuting schemes, and Weyl's polarization theorem. We use the factorization of the Hitchin morphism to c…
We prove boundedness of global strong $(δ,n)$-complements for generalized $ε$-log canonical pairs of Fano type. We also prove some partial results towards boundedness of local strong $(δ,n)$-complements for semi-stable morphisms. As applications, we prove an effective generalized canonical bundle formula for generalized klt pairs and an effective generalized adjunction formula for exceptional generalized log canonical centers. Moreover, we prove that the existence of strong $(δ,n)$-complements implies a conjecture due to M$^{\rm c}$Kernan concerning the singularities of the base of a Mori fibe…
We define etale cohomology of the moduli spaces of mixed characteristic local shtukas so that it gives smooth representations including the case where the relevant elements of the Kottwitz set are both non-basic. Then we relate the etale cohomology of different moduli spaces of mixed characteristic local shtukas using convolution morphisms, duality morphisms and twist morphisms. As an application, we show the Kottwitz conjecture in some new cases including the cases for all inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_3$ and minuscule cocharacters. We study also some non-minuscule cases and show that the Kottw…
We prove that if $X \to Y$ is a (geometrically) regular morphism of Noetherian schemes, then from a Nisnevich-local perspective, the Gersten complex for Quillen $K$-theory on $X$ becomes acyclic in degrees beyond the Krull dimension of $Y$. Using our methods, we also reduce the general Gersten conjecture for regular, unramified local rings to the case of a discrete valuation ring which is essentially smooth over $\mathbb{Z}$. We apply our results to the the theory of algebraic cycles --- globally to obtain relative versions of Bloch's Formula and locally to address the Claborn-Fossum Conjectur…
We study Deligne's conjecture on the monodromy weight filtration on the nearby cycles in the mixed characteristic case, and reduce it to the nondegeneracy of certain pairings in the semistable case. We also prove a related conjecture of Rapoport and Zink which uses only the image of the Cech restriction morphism, if Deligne's conjecture holds for a general hyperplane section. In general we show that Deligne's conjecture is true if the standard conjectures hold.
The Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture relates two different invariants of a surjective endomorphism, the dynamical and arithmetic degrees. As the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture is only meaningful when a morphism has a Zariski dense orbit, it has no content for varieties with positive Kodaira dimension. A generalization of the Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture which is meaningful in positive Kodaira dimension is the so called sAND conjecture, which involves the set of "small" arithmetic degrees. Kawaguchi and Silverman showed that a small arithmetic degree is the modulus of an eigenvalue of $f^*\colo…
We prove a conjecture by Kawaguchi-Silverman on arithmetic and dynamical degrees, for self-morphisms of semi-abelian varieties. Moreover, we determine the set of the arithmetic degrees of orbits and the (first) dynamical degrees of self-morphisms of semi-abelian varieties.
Up to a translation in the language of arithmetic $\D$-modules, we prove a conjecture of Berthelot on the preservation of the overconvergence under the direct image by a smooth proper morphism of varieties over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$.
In their book Rapoport and Zink constructed rigid analytic period spaces $F^{wa}$ for Fontaine's filtered isocrystals, and period morphisms from PEL moduli spaces of $p$-divisible groups to some of these period spaces. They conjectured the existence of an étale bijective morphism $F^a \to F^{wa}$ of rigid analytic spaces and of a universal local system of $Q_p$-vector spaces on $F^a$. For Hodge-Tate weights $n-1$ and $n$ we construct in this article an intrinsic Berkovich open subspace $F^0$ of $F^{wa}$ and the universal local system on $F^0$. We conjecture that the rigid-analytic space associ…
Let ${\mathbb C}[x_1,\dots,x_n]_{d+1}$ be the vector space of homogeneous forms of degree $d+1$ on ${\mathbb C}^n$, with $n,d\ge 2$. In earlier articles by J. Alper, M. Eastwood and the author, we introduced a morphism, called $A$, that assigns to every nondegenerate form the so-called associated form lying in the space ${\mathbb C}[y_1,\dots,y_n]_{n(d-1)}$. One of the reasons for our interest in $A$ is the conjecture---motivated by the well-known Mather-Yau theorem on complex isolated hypersurface singularities---asserting that all regular ${\mathrm {GL}}_n$-invariant functions on the affine …
The toroidalization conjecture of D. Abramovich, K. Karu, K. Matsuki, and J. Wlodarczyk asks whether any given morphism of nonsingular varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero can be modified into a toroidal morphism. Following a suggestion by Dale Cutkosky, we define the notion of \emph{locally toroidal} morphisms and ask whether any locally toroidal morphism can be modified into a toroidal morphism. In this paper, we answer the question in the affirmative when the morphism is between any arbitrary variety and a surface.
For a non-isotrivial family of surfaces of general type over a complex projective curve, we give upper bounds for the degree of the direct images of powers of the relative dualizing sheaf. They imply that, fixing the curve and the possible degeneration locus, the induced morphisms to the moduli scheme of stable surfaces of general type are parameterized by a scheme of finite type. The method extends to families of canonically polarized manifolds, but the modular interpretation requires the existence of relative minimal models.
I define a morphism on $\mathbb{C}_p$ called a lift of $p$-th power if its natural restriction to the residue field of $\mathbb{C}_p$ is a $p$-th power of some morphism. This definition generalizes from the lift of Frobenius. In this paper the theory of perfectoid spaces is applied on the morphism to the Manin-Mumford conjecutre, the Mordell-Lang conjecture and the Tate-Volch conjecture.
Let $E\subseteq \mathbb{P}^2$ be a complex rational cuspidal curve contained in the projective plane and let $(X,D)\to (\mathbb{P}^2,E)$ be the minimal log resolution of singularities. Applying the log minimal model program to $(X,\frac{1}{2}D)$ we prove that if $E$ has more than two singular points or if $D$, which is a tree of rational curves, has more than six maximal twigs or if $\mathbb{P}^2\setminus E$ is not of log general type then $E$ is Cremona equivalent to a line, i.e. the Coolidge-Nagata conjecture for $E$ holds. We show also that if $E$ is not Cremona equivalent to a line then th…
Generalizing the well-known Shafarevich hyperbolicity conjecture, it has been conjectured by Viehweg that a quasi-projective manifold that admits a generically finite morphism to the moduli stack of canonically polarized varieties is necessarily of log general type. Given a quasi-projective surface that maps to the moduli stack, we employ extension properties of logarithmic pluri-forms to establish a strong relationship between the moduli map and the minimal model program of the surface. As a result, we can describe the fibration induced by the moduli map quite explicitly. A refined affirmativ…
In this paper, we consider the limit $ \lim_{n \to \infty} \sum_{v\in S} λ_{Y,v}(f^{n}(x))/h_{H}(f^{n}(x)) $ where $f \colon X \longrightarrow X$ is a surjective self-morphism on a smooth projective variety $X$ over a number field, $S$ is a finite set of places, $ λ_{Y,v}$ is a local height function associated with a proper closed subscheme $Y \subset X$, and $h_{H}$ is an ample height function on $X$. We give a geometric condition which ensures that the limit is zero, unconditionally when $\dim Y=0$ and assuming Vojta's conjecture when $\dim Y\geq1$. In particular, we prove (one is unconditio…
Spectral transformation is known to set up a birational morphism between the Hitchin and Beauville-Mukai integrable systems. The corresponding phase spaces are: (a) the cotangent bundle of the moduli space of bundles over a curve C, and (b) a symmetric power of the cotangent surface T^*(C). We conjecture that this morphism can be quantized, and we check this conjecture in the case where C is a rational curve with marked points and rank 2 bundles. We discuss the relation of the resulting isomorphism of quantized algebras with Sklyanin's separation of variables.
A non-zero constant Jacobian polynomial map $F=(P,Q):\mathbb{C}^2 \longrightarrow \mathbb{C}^2$ has a polynomial inverse if the component $P$ is a simple polynomial, i.e. if, when $P$ extended to a morphism $p:X\longrightarrow \mathbb{P}^1$ of a compactification $X$ of $\mathbb{C}^2$, the restriction of $p$ to each irreducible component $C$ of the compactification divisor $D = X-\mathbb{C}^2$ is either degree 0 or 1.
We study the topology of Hitchin fibrations via abelian surfaces. We establish the P=W conjecture for genus $2$ curves and arbitrary rank. In higher genus and arbitrary rank, we prove that P=W holds for the subalgebra of cohomology generated by even tautological classes. Furthermore, we show that all tautological generators lie in the correct pieces of the perverse filtration as predicted by the P=W conjecture. In combination with recent work of Mellit, this reduces the full conjecture to the multiplicativity of the perverse filtration. Our main technique is to study the Hitchin fibration as a…
Let X be a surface whose Cox ring has a single relation satisfying moreover a kind of linearity property. Under a simple assumption, we show that the geometric Manin's conjectures hold for some degrees lying in the dual of the effective cone of X (in particular, for those degrees the moduli space of morphisms has the expected dimension). The result applies to a class of generalized del Pezzo surfaces which has been intensively studied in the context of the arithmetic Manin's conjecture.
We give applications of integral canonical models of orthogonal Shimura varieties and the Kuga-Satake morphism to the arithmetic of K3 surfaces over finite fields. We prove every K3 surface of finite height over a finite field admits a characteristic 0 lifting whose generic fiber is a K3 surface with complex multiplication. Combined with the results of Mukai and Buskin, we prove the Tate conjecture for the square of a K3 surface over a finite field. To obtain these results, we construct an analogue of Kisin's algebraic group for a K3 surface of finite height, and construct characteristic 0 lif…
Let E be an elliptic curve of conductor N and rank one over Q. So there is a non-constant morphism X+0(N) --> E defined over Q, where X+0(N) = X0(N)/wN and wN is the Fricke involution of the modular curve X+0(N). Under this morphism the traces of the Heegner points of X+0(N) map to rational points on E. In this paper we study the index I of the subgroup generated by all these traces on E(Q). We propose and also discuss a conjecture that says that if N is prime and I > 1, then either the number of connected components of the real locus X+0(N)(R) is greater than 1 or (less likely) the order S of…
By applying the positivity theorem of direct images and a pluricanonical version of the structure theorem on the cohomology jumping loci à la Green-Lazarsfeld-Simpson, we show that the klt Kähler version of the Iitaka conjecture $C_{n,m}$ (Ueno, 1975) for $f:X\to Y$ (surjective morphism between compact Kähler manifolds with connected general fibre) holds true when the determinant of the direct image of some power of the relative canonical bundle is big on $Y$ or when $Y$ is a complex torus. These generalize the corresponding results of Viehweg (1983) and of Cao-P\u aun (2017) respectively. We …
