Motivated by Shokurov's ACC Conjecture for log canonical thresholds, we propose an inductive point of view on singularities of pairs, in the case when the ambient variety is smooth. Our main result characterizes the log canonicity of a pair in dimension N+1 by the log canonicity of another pair (not effective, in general) in dimension N.

In this revised version, the mistake of the author confusing the weak transform and strict transform, pointed out by E. Bierstone, is corrected. It gives a self-contained proof of (embedded) resolution of singularities over a field of characteristic zero following the inductive algorithm of Encinas and Villamayor. A chapter explaining the background motivation for the invariants used (based upon a lecture by Villamayor) and another containing some examples demonstrating the subtle points are added.

Thom (residual) polynomials in characteristic classes are used in the analysis of geometry of functional spaces. They serve as a tool in description of classes Poincaré dual to subvarieties of functions of prescribed types. We give explicit universal expressions for residual polynomials in spaces of functions on complex curves having isolated singularities and multisingularities, in terms of few characteristic classes. These expressions lead to a partial explicit description of a stratification of Hurwitz spaces.
We investigate Cox rings of minimal resolutions of surface quotient singularities and provide two descriptions of these rings. The first one is the equation for the spectrum of a Cox ring, which is a hypersurface in an affine space. The second is the set of generators of the Cox ring viewed as a subring of the coordinate ring of a product of a torus and another surface quotient singularity. We introduce an inductive argument for proving birational superrigidity and K-stability of singular Fano complete intersections of index one, using the same types of information from lower dimensions. In particular, we prove that a hypersurface in $\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of degree $n+1$ with only ordinary singularities of multiplicity at most $n-5$ is birationally superrigid and K-stable if $n\gg0$. As part of the argument, we also establish an adjunction type result for local volumes of singularities.

We give a description of the Grauert-Riemenschneider canonical sheaf of $Y$ in terms of the multiplier ideal sheaves associated to $X$ and use it to study the singularities of $Y$. In this note I give a description of Lyubeznik's local cohomology invariants for a certain natural class of local rings, namely the ones which have the same local cohomology vanishing as one expects from an isolated singularity. This strengthens the results of Bondu and myself in math.AG/0406265 while at the same time somewhat simplifying the proofs. Through examples I further point out the bad behavior of these invariants under reduction to positive characteristic.
