We prove by induction on dimension the Hodge conjecture for smooth complex projective varieties. Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety. Then $X$ is birational to a possibly singular projective hypersurface, hence to a smooth projective variety $E_0$ which is a component of a normal crossing divisor $E=\cup_{i=0}^rE_i\subset Y$ which is the singular fiber of a pencil $f:Y\to\mathbb A^1$ of smooth projective hypersurfaces. Using the smooth hypersurface case by a previous result of the autor, the nearby cycle functor on mixed Hodge module with rational de Rham factor, and the induction hypothesis, we prove that an Hodge class of $E_0$ is absolute Hodge, more precisely the locus of Hodge classes inside the algebraic vector bundle given the De Rham cohomology the rational deformation of $E_0$ is defined over $\mathbb Q$. By another previous result of the autor, we get the Hodge conjecture for $E_0$. By the induction hypothesis we also have the Hodge conjecture for $X$.
We continue our work on variations of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structures by defining analogs of the harmonic metric equations for filtered bundles and proving a precise analog of Schmid's Nilpotent Orbit Theorem for 1-parameter degenerations of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structure.
Work of Green, Griffiths, Laza, and Robles suggests that the moduli space of (smoothable) stable surfaces should admit a natural stratification defined via Hodge theoretic data. In the case of stable surfaces with $K_X^2 = 1$ and $χ(X) = 3$ we compute the Hodge type of all examples known to us and show that all predicted degenerations are geometrically realised.
In this article, we will give the Deligne 1-motives up to isogeny corresponding to the $\mathbb{Q}$-limiting mixed Hodge structures of semi-stable degenerations of curves, by using logarithmic structures and Steenbrink's cohomological mixed Hodge complexes associated to semi-stable degenerations of curves.
We use the Decomposition Theorem to derive several generalizations of the Clemens-Schmid sequence, relating asymptotic Hodge theory of a degeneration to the mixed Hodge theory of its singular fiber(s).
We consider arbitrary polarized variations of Hodge structure of weight two and $h^{2,0}=1$ over a non--singular complex algebraic curve $S$ and analyze the boundary behaviour of the associated Kudla--Millson theta series using Schmid's theorems on degenerations of Hodge structure. This allows us to prove that this theta series is always integrable over $S$ and to describe explicitly the non-holomorphic part of the Kudla--Millson generating series in terms of the mixed Hodge structures at infinity.
We construct a hermitian metric on the classifying spaces of graded-polarized mixed Hodge structures and prove analogs of the strong distance estimate between an admissible period map and the approximating nilpotent orbit. We also consider the asymptotic behavior of the biextension metric, the norm estimates and the asymptotics of the reduced limit Hodge filtration.
We prove an analog of Schmid's $\text{\rm SL}_2$-orbit theorem for a class of variations of mixed Hodge structure which includes logarithmic deformations, degenerations of 1-motives and archimedean heights. In particular, as consequence this theorem, we obtain a simple formula for the asymptotic behavior of the archimedean height of a flat family of algebraic cycles which depends only on the weight filtration and local monodromy.
Two interesting questions in algebraic geometry are: (i) how can a smooth projective varieties degenerate? and (ii) given two such degenerations, when can we say that one is "more singular/degenerate" than the other? Schmid's Nilpotent Orbit Theorem yields Hodge-theoretic analogs of these questions, and the Hodge-theoretic answers in turn provide insight into the motivating algebro-geometric questions, sometimes with applications to the study of moduli. Recently the Hodge-theoretic questions have been completely answered. This is an expository survey of that work.
We prove that the relative log de Rham cohomology groups of a projective semistable log smooth degeneration admit a natural \textit{limiting} mixed Hodge structure. More precisely, we construct a family of increasing filtrations and a family of nilpotent endomorphisms on the relative log de Rham cohomology groups and show that they satisfy a part of good properties of a nilpotnet orbit in several variables.
We study the structure of string theory flux compactification for a general family of elliptic CY 3-folds. We investigate the locus of the attractor points of the flux compactification in type IIB string theory on the boundary components of period domains. Specifically we give equations describing this locus through the asymptotic of nilpotent orbits on period domains. our approach is a mixture of techniques of asymptotic Hodge theory and the numerical period vectors used in physics.
In this article we prove that the log Hodge de Rham spectral sequences of certain proper log smooth schemes of Cartier type in characteristic $p>0$ degenerate at $E_1$. We also prove that the log Kodaira vanishings for them hold when they are projective. We formulate the log weak Lefschetz conjecture for log crystalline cohomologies and prove that it is true in certain cases.
We extend the Kuga-Satake construction to the case of limit mixed Hodge structures of K3 type. We use this to study the geometry and Hodge theory of degenerations of Kuga-Satake abelian varieties, associated to polarized variations of K3 type Hodge structures over the punctured disc.

We study rational curves on general Fano hypersurfaces in projective space, mostly by degenerating the hypersurface along with its ambient projective space to reducible varieties. We prove results on existence of low-degree rational curves with balanced normal bundle, and reprove some results on irreducibility of spaces of rational curves of low degree.
We provide a construction of examples of semistable degeneration via toric geometry. The applications include a higher dimensional generalization of classical degeneration of K3 surface into 4 rational components, an algebraic geometric version of decomposing K3 as the fiber sum of two E(1)'s as well as it's higher dimensional generalizations, and many other new examples.
For a regular function f on a smooth complex quasi-projective variety, J.-D. Yu introduced in arXiv:1203.2338 a filtration (the irregular Hodge filtration) on the de Rham complex with twisted differential d+df, extending a definition of Deligne in the case of curves. In this article, we show the degeneration at E_1 of the spectral sequence attached to the irregular Hodge filtration, by using the method of arXiv:0804.4328. We also make explicit the relation with a complex introduced by M. Kontsevich and give details on its proof of the corresponding E_1 degeneration, by reduction to characteris…
We give a spectral sequence to compute the logarithmic Hodge groups on a hypersurface type toric log Calabi-Yau space, compute its E_1 term explicitly in terms of tropical degeneration data and Jacobian rings and prove its degeneration at E_2 under mild assumptions. We prove the basechange of the affine Hodge groups and deduce it for the logarithmic Hodge groups in low dimensions. As an application, we prove a mirror symmetry duality in dimension two and four involving the usual Hodge numbers, the stringy Hodge numbers and the affine Hodge numbers.
We give a Hodge-theoretic criterion for a Calabi--Yau variety to have finite Weil--Petersson distance on higher dimensional bases up to a set of codimension $\geq 2$. The main tool is variation of Hodge structures and variation of mixed Hodge structures. We also give a description on the codimension 2 locus for the moduli space of Calabi--Yau threefolds. We prove that the points lying on exactly one finite and one infinite divisor have infinite Weil--Petersson distance along angular slices. Finally, by giving a classification of the dominant term of the candidates of the Weil--Petersson potent…
We study variations of Hodge structures over a Picard modular surface, and compute the weights and types of their degenerations through the cusps of the Baily-Borel compactification. The main tool is a theorem of Burgos and Wildeshaus.
We introduce an algebraic method for describing the Hodge filtration of degenerating hypersurfaces in projective toric varieties. For this purpose, we show some fundamental properties of logarithmic differential forms on proper equivariant morphisms of toric varieties.
We define defect for hypersurfaces with A-D-E singularities in complex projective normal Cohen-Macaulay fourfolds having some vanishing properties of Bott-type and prove formulae for Hodge numbers of big resolutions of such hypersurfaces. We compute Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau manifolds obtained as small resolutions of cuspidal triple sextics and double octics with higher A_j singularities.
We show that very general hypersurfaces in odd-dimensional simplicial projective toric varieties verifying a certain combinatorial property satisfy the Hodge conjecture (these include projective spaces). This gives a connection between the Oda conjecture and Hodge conjecture. We also give an explicit criterion which depends on the degree for very general hypersurfaces for the combinatorial condition to be verified.
We revisit the non-commutative Hodge-to-de Rham Degeneration Theorem of the first author, and present its proof in a somewhat streamlined and improved form that explicitly uses spectral algebraic geometry. We also try to explain why topology is essential to the proof.
We determine the second fundamental form of a variation of Hodge Structure of a smooth projective hypersurface using the classical identification of the Hodge structure and the action of the infinitesimal variation of Hodge structure with pieces of the Jacobian Ideal of the hypersurface. This simple algebraic description also implies that, in this case, the variation of Hodge structure satisfies a new set of second order partial differential equations.Comments are welcome!
In this paper we are interested in proving that the infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure of hypersurfaces of high enough degree lie in a proper subvariety of the variety of all infinitesimal variations. This is proved using a space of symmetrizers as defined by Donagi, to identify a geometric structure carried by the variety of all infinitesimal variations of Hodge structure.
In this paper the authors consider a certain toroidal compactification of the moduli space of degenerations of (1,p)-polarized abelian surfaces with (canonical) level structure. Using Hodge theory we give a proof that a degenerate abelian surface associated to a corank 1 boundary point is (almost) completely determined by the boundary point. The crucial ingredient in the proof is the Local Invariant Cycle theorem which relates the variation of Hodge structure to the mixed Hodge structure on the singular surface.
We consider a hypersurface in $\mathbb{C}^n$ with an isolated singular point at the origin, and study the mixed Hodge structure of the stalk of its intersection cohomology complex at the origin. In particular we express the dimension of each graded piece of the weight filtration of this mixed Hodge structure in terms of the numbers of the Jordan blocks in the Milnor monodromy.
We identify the twisted sectors of a compact simplicial toric variety. We do the same for a generic nondegenerate Calabi-Yau hypersurface of an $n$-dimensional simplicial Fano toric variety and then explicitly compute $h^{1,1}_{orb}$ and $h^{n-2,1}_{orb}$ for the hypersurface. We give applications to the orbifold string theory conjecture and orbifold mirror symmetry.
We introduce a version of the Cartier isomorphism for de Rham cohomology valid for associative, not necessarily commutative algebras over a field of positive characteristic. Using this, we imitate the well-known argument of P. Deligne and L. Iluusie and prove, in some cases, a conjecture of M. Kontsevich which claims that the Hodge-to-de Rham, a.k.a. Hochschild-to-cyclic spectral sequence degenerates.
The most fundamental example of mirror symmetry compares the Fermat hypersurfaces in P^n and P^n/G, where G is a finite group that acts on P^n and preserves the Fermat hypersurface. We generalise this to hypersurfaces in Grassmannians, where the picture is richer and more complex. There is a finite group G that acts on the Grassmannian Gr(n,r) and preserves an appropriate Calabi-Yau hypersurface. We establish how mirror symmetry, toric degenerations, blow-ups and variation of GIT relate the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces inside Gr(n,r) and Gr(n,r)/G. This allows us to describe a compactification of …
We study the Milnor monodromies of non-isolated hypersurface singularities and show that the reduced cohomology groups of the Milnor fibers are concentrated in the middle degree for some eigenvalues of the monodromies. As an application of this result, we give an explicit formula for some parts of their Jordan normal forms.
We introduce Hodge ideal spectrum for isolated hypersurface singularities to see the difference between the Hodge ideals and the microlocal $V$-filtration modulo the Jacobian ideal. Via the Tjurina subspectrum, we can compare the Hodge ideal spectrum with the Steenbrink spectrum which can be defined by the microlocal $V$-filtration. As a consequence of a formula of Mustata and Popa, these two spectra coincide in the weighted homogeneous case. We prove sufficient conditions for their coincidence and non-coincidence in some non-weighted-homogeneous cases where the defining function is semi-weigh…
We give sharp lower bounds for the degree of the syzygies involving the partial derivatives of a homogeneous polynomial defining an even dimensional nodal hypersurface. This implies the validity of formulas due to M. Saito, L. Wotzlaw and the author for the graded pieces with respect to the Hodge filtration of the top cohomology of the hypersurface complement in many new cases. A classical result by Severi on the position of the singularities of a nodal surface in $\mathbb{P}^3$ is improved and applications to deformation theory of nodal surfaces are given.
We complete the construction of the fundamental diagram of various partial compactifications of the moduli spaces of mixed Hodge structures with polarized graded quotients. The diagram includes the space of nilpotent orbits, the space of SL(2)-orbits, and the space of Borel--Serre orbits. We give amplifications of this fundamental diagram, and amplify the relations of these spaces. We describe how this work is useful to understand asymptotic behaviors of Beilinson regulators and of local height parings in degeneration. We discuss "mild degenerations" in which regulators converge.
First, we define phase tropical hypersurfaces in terms of a degeneration data of smooth complex algebraic hypersurfaces in $(\mathbb{C}^*)^n$. Next, we prove that complex hyperplanes are diffeomorphic to their degeneration called phase tropical hyperplanes. More generally, using Mikhalkin's decomposition into pairs-of-pants of smooth algebraic hypersurfaces, we show that phase tropical hypersurfaces with smooth tropicalization, possess naturally a smooth differentiable structure. Moreover, we prove that phase tropical hypersurfaces possess a natural symplectic structure.
We establish the Hodge conjecture for some subvarieties of a class of toric varieties. First we study quasi-smooth intersections in a projective simplicial toric variety, which is a suitable notion to generalize smooth complete intersection subvarieties in the toric environment, and in particular quasi-smooth hypersurfaces. We show that under appropriate conditions, the Hodge Conjecture holds for a very general quasi-smooth intersection subvariety, generalizing the work on quasi-smooth hypersurfaces of the first author and Grassi in [3]. We also show that the Hodge Conjecture holds asymptotica…
