We describe a Hodge theoretic approach to the question: In what ways can a smooth projective variety degenerate?
Work of Green, Griffiths, Laza, and Robles suggests that the moduli space of (smoothable) stable surfaces should admit a natural stratification defined via Hodge theoretic data. We give a spectral sequence to compute the logarithmic Hodge groups on a hypersurface type toric log Calabi-Yau space, compute its E_1 term explicitly in terms of tropical degeneration data and Jacobian rings and prove its degeneration at E_2 under mild assumptions. We prove the basechange of the affine Hodge groups and deduce it for the logarithmic Hodge groups in low dimensions. As an application, we prove a mirror symmetry duality in dimension two and four involving the usual Hodge numbers, the stringy Hodge numbers and the affine Hodge numbers.

In this paper the authors consider a certain toroidal compactification of the moduli space of degenerations of (1,p)-polarized abelian surfaces with (canonical) level structure. We study one parameter degenerations of complex projective manifolds by introducing certain type of Hodge metrics coming from the pluricanonical forms. We show that degenerations with at most canonical singularities are all in the finite distance boundary of moduli spaces. We also propose the converse to be true in the sense that finite distance degenerations admit birational models which have at most canonical singularities in the degenerate fiber. We verify this for curves and show that the Calabi-Yau case follows from the minimal model conjecture.

In this paper, we show that the mixed Hodge structures of character varieties are of Hodge--Tate type and that the mixed Hodge polynomials are independent of the choice of generic eigenvalues, which is a conjecture due to Hausel, Letellier and Rodriguez-Villegas.
