The following conjecture arose out of discussions between B. Harbourne, J. Roé, C. Cilberto and R. Miranda: for a smooth projective surface $X$ there exists a positive constant $c_X$ such that $h^1(\mathcal O_X(C))\le c_X h^0(\mathcal O_X(C))$ for every prime divisor $C$ on $X$. When the Picard number $ρ(X)=2$, we prove that if either the Kodaira dimension $κ(X)=1$ and $X$ has a negative curve or $X$ has two negative curves, then this conjecture holds for $X$.
We prove that a differential field K is algebraically closed and Picard-Vessiot closed if and only if the differential Galois cohomology group H^1_\partial(K,G) is trivial for any linear differential algebraic group G over K. We give an application to the parameterized Picard-Vessiot theory.
It is known that the Picard group of a complex manifold can be expressed as a Deligne cohomology group. One may wonder if the same holds for the Picard group of a smooth algebraic variety and Deligne-Beilinson cohomology but this is not true, as already remarked by M. Saito. We explain how one has to modify the latter, show that the Picard group can be expressed by absolute Hodge cohomology, too, and introduce an intermediate object between Picard group and usual Deligne-Beilinson cohomology group. Similarly as in the case of Deligne cohomology one can relate line bundles with a regular connec…
In an earlier paper it was proved that if a differential field $(K,δ)$ is algebraically closed and closed under Picard-Vessiot extensions then every differential algebraic principal homogeneous space over K for a linear differential algebraic group G over K has a K-rational point (in fact if and only if). This paper explores whether and if so, how, this can be extended to (a) several derivations, (b) one automorphism. Under a natural notion of "generalized Picard-Vessiot extension" (in the case of several derivations), we give a counterexample. We also have a counterexample in the case of one …
We formulate a detailed conjectural Eichler-Shimura type formula for the cohomology of local systems on a Picard modular surface associated to the group of unitary similitudes $\mathrm{GU}(2,1,\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3}))$. The formula is based on counting points over finite fields on curves of genus three which are cyclic triple covers of the projective line. Assuming the conjecture we are able to calculate traces of Hecke operators on spaces of Picard modular forms. We provide ample evidence for the conjectural formula. Along the way we prove new results on characteristic polynomials of Frobenius …
We study the moduli spaces which classify smooth surfaces along with a complex line bundle. There are homological stability and Madsen--Weiss type results for these spaces (mostly due to Cohen and Madsen), and we discuss the cohomological calculations which may be deduced from them. We then relate these spaces to (a generalisation of) Kawazumi's extended mapping class groups, and hence deduce cohomological information about these. Finally, we relate these results to complex algebraic geometry. We construct a holomorphic stack classifying families of Riemann surfaces equipped with a fibrewise h…
We show that the conjecture is true for some smooth projective surfaces with Picard number 2.
The main goal of this paper is to give an explicit formula for the cohomology of the sheaf of units of the punctured spectrum of a Stanley-Reisner ring. In particular we compute the local Picard group of $K [\triangle]$. To achieve this we study the corresponding purely combinatorial problem on the punctured spectrum of the pointed monoid defined by $\triangle$. The cohomology of the sheaf of units on ${\rm Spec}^ \bullet K[\triangle ]$ is then the direct sum of this combinatorial cohomology, which has a decomposition along the vertices, and another part depending on the field $K$.
Let $X$ be a K3 surface with Picard group $\mathrm{Pic}(X)\cong\mathbb{Z} H$ such that $H^2=2n$. Let $M_{H}(\mathbf{v})$ be the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves on $X$ with Mukai vector $\mathbf{v}$. We say that $\mathbf{v}$ satisfies weak Brill-Noether if the general sheaf in $M_{H}(\mathbf{v})$ has at most one nonzero cohomology group. We show that given any rank $r \geq 2$, there are only finitely many Mukai vectors of rank $r$ on K3 surfaces of Picard rank one where weak Brill-Noether fails. We give an algorithm for finding the potential counterexamples and classify all such cou…
Given a variation of Hodge structure over $\mathbb{P}^1$ with Hodge numbers $(1,1,\dots,1)$, we show how to compute the degrees of the Deligne extension of its Hodge bundles, following Eskin-Kontsevich-Möller-Zorich, by using the local exponents of the corresponding Picard-Fuchs equation. This allows us to compute the Hodge numbers of Zucker's Hodge structure on the corresponding parabolic cohomology groups. We also apply this to families of elliptic curves, K3 surfaces and Calabi-Yau threefolds.
The zeroth line bundle cohomology on Calabi-Yau three-folds encodes information about the existence of flop transitions and the genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants. We illustrate this claim by studying several Picard number 2 Calabi-Yau three-folds realised as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. Many of these manifolds exhibit certain symmetries on the Picard lattice which preserve the zeroth cohomology.
The cohomological rigidity problem for toric manifolds asks whether toric manifolds are diffeomorphic (or homeomorphic) if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. Many affirmative partial solutions to the problem have been obtained and no counterexample is known. In this paper, we study the diffeomorphism classification of toric Fano $d$-folds with $d=3,4$ or with Picard number $\ge 2d-2$. In particular, we show that those manifolds except for two toric Fano $4$-folds are diffeomorphic if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. The exceptional two toric Fano $4$-folds (their ID…
We find an algorithm to compute the cohomology groups of spherical vector bundles on complex projective K3 surfaces, in terms of their Mukai vectors. In many good cases, we give significant simplifications of the algorithm. As an application, when the Picard rank is one, we show a numerical condition that is equivalent to weak Brill-Noether for a spherical vector bundle.
Let $S$ be a surface isogenous to a product of curves of unmixed type. After presenting several results useful to study the cohomology of $S$ we prove a structure theorem for the cohomology of regular surfaces isogenous to a product of unmixed type with $χ(\mathcal{O}_S)=2$. In particular we found two families of surfaces of general type with maximal Picard number.
Assuming that the differential field $(K,δ)$ is differentially large, in the sense of León Sánchez and Tressl, and "bounded" as a field, we prove that for any linear differential algebraic group $G$ over $K$, the differential Galois (or constrained) cohomology set $H^1_δ(K,G)$ is finite. This applies, among other things, to closed ordered differential fields $K$, in the sense of Singer, and to closed $p$-adic differential fields in the sense of Tressl. As an application, we prove a general existence result for parameterized Picard-Vessiot extensions within certain families of fields; if $(K,δ_…
We determine explicit generators for a cohomology group constructed from a solution of a fuchsian linear differential equation and describe its relation with cohomology groups with coefficients in a local system. In the parameterized case, this yields into an algorithm which computes new fuchsian differential equations from those depending on multi-parameters. This generalizes the classical convolution of solutions of fuchsian differential equations.
In this paper, we continue the study of boundedness questions for (simply connected) smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds commenced in arXiv:1706.01268. The diffeomorphism class of such a threefold is known to be determined up to finitely many possibilities by the integral middle cohomology and two integral forms on the integral second cohomology, namely the cubic cup-product form and the linear form given by cup-product with the second chern class. The question addressed in both papers is whether knowledge of these cubic and linear forms determines the threefold up to finitely many families, that is …
An equivariant stable birational invariant of an action of a finite group on a smooth projective variety is the first cohomology group of the Picard module. Bogomolov-Prokhorov and Shinder computed this for actions of cyclic groups on rational surfaces, with maximal stabilizers, in terms of the geometry of the fixed point locus. Using the Brauer group of the quotient stack, we extend the computation to more general actions and relate it to the equivariant Burnside group formalism.
The purpose of this article is to construct a Hecke-equivariant Chow motive whose realizations equal interior (or intersection) cohomology of Picard surfaces with regular algebraic coefficients. As a consequence, we are able to define Grothendieck motives for Picard modular forms.
We analyse line bundle cohomologies on all favourable co-dimension two Complete Intersection Calabi Yau (CICY) manifolds of Picard number two. Our results provide further evidence that the cohomology dimensions of such line bundles are given by analytic expressions, which change between regions in the line bundle charge space. This agrees with recent observations of CY line bundles presented in Refs [1,2]. In many cases, the expressions for bundle cohomology dimensions are polynomial functions of the line bundle charges (of degree at most 3), and the regions are cones. A more novel observation…
We prove duality theorems for the {é}tale cohomology of logarithmic Hodge-Witt sheaves and split tori on smooth curves over a local field of positive characteristic. As an application, we obtain a description of the Brauer group of the function fields of curves over local fields in terms of the characters of the idele groups. We also show that the classical Brauer-Manin pairing between the Brauer and Picard groups of smooth projective curves over local fields has analogues for arbitrary smooth curves, smooth projective curves with modulus and singular projective curves over such fields.
We study a surface discovered by Stover which is the surface with minimal Euler number and maximal automorphism group among smooth arithmetic ball quotient surfaces. We study the natural map $\wedge^{2}H^{1}(S,\mathbb{C})\to H^{2}(S,\mathbb{C})$ and we discuss the problem related to the so-called Lagrangian surfaces. We obtain that this surface $S$ has maximal Picard number and has no higher genus fibrations. We compute that its Albanese variety $A$ is isomorphic to $(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}[α])^{7}$, for $α=e^{2iπ/3}$.
Let k be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. A del Pezzo threefold F with maximal Picard number is isomorphic to P^1xP^1xP^1, where P^1 is the projective line over k. In the present paper we completely classify locally free sheaves of rank 2 with vanishing intermediate cohomology over such an F. Such a classification extends similar results proved by E. Arrondo and L. Costa regarding del Pezzo threefolds with Picard number 1.
