We prove the conjectural relation between the Stokes matrix for the quantum cohomology and an exceptional collection generating the derived category of coherent sheaves in the case of smooth cubic surfaces. The proof is based on a toric degeneration of cubic surfaces, the Givental's mirror theorem for toric manifolds, and the Picard-Lefschetz theory.
We prove the conjectural relation between the Stokes matrix for the quantum cohomology and an exceptional collection generating the derived category of coherent sheaves in the case of the Grassmannian. The proof is based on the relation between the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian and that of the projective space.
We prove the universal triviality of the third unramified cohomology group of a very general complex cubic fourfold containing a plane. The proof uses results on the unramified cohomology of quadrics due to Kahn, Rost, and Sujatha.
We compute Stokes matrices and monodromy for the quantum cohomology of projective spaces. We prove that the Stokes' matrix of the quantum cohomology coincides with the Gram matrix in the theory of derived categories of coherent sheaves.
In this paper we compute the cohomology of moduli space of cubic fourfolds with ADE type singularities relying on Kirwan's blowup and Laza's GIT construction. More precisely, we obtain the Betti numbers of Kirwan's resolution of the moduli space. Furthermore, by applying decomposition theorem we obtain the Betti numbers of the intersection cohomology of Baily-Borel compactification of the moduli space.
In this paper, we prove a general principle of lifting an automorphism from positive characteristic to zero characteristic. We based on the principle to prove the automorphism group of Fano variety of cubic threefold (fourfold) acts on its cohomology group faithfully. We also prove the same result for a singular cubic threefold (fourfold) with one ordinary double singularity. As an application, we classify the automorphism groups of cubic fourfolds with small middle Picard number over complex numbers.
We compute the rational cohomology of the universal family of smooth cubic surfaces using Vassiliev's method of simplicial resolution. Modulo embedding, the universal family has cohomology isomorphic to that of $\mathbb{P}^2$. A consequence of our theorem is that over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, away from finitely many characteristics, the average number of points on a smooth cubic surface is $q^2 + q + 1$.
Mumford defined a natural isomorphism between the intermediate jacobian of a conic-bundle over $P^2$ and the Prym variety of a naturally defined étale double cover of the discrminant curve of the conic-bundle. Clemens and Griffiths used this isomorphism to give a proof of the irrationality of a smooth cubic threefold and Beauville later generalized the isomorphism to intermediate jacobians of odd-dimensional quadric-bundles over $P^2$. We further generalize the isomorphism to the primitive cohomology of a smooth cubic hypersurface in $P^n$.
The Jacobian ring J(X) of a smooth hypersurface determines its isomorphism type. This has been used by Donagi and others to prove the generic global Torelli theorem for hypersurfaces in many cases. In Voisin's original proof of the global Torelli theorem for smooth cubic fourfolds the Jacobian ring does not intervene. In this paper we present a proof of the global Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds that relies on the Jacobian ring and the (derived) global Torelli theorem for K3 surfaces. It emphasizes, once again, the relation between K3 surfaces and smooth cubic fourfolds. More generally, fo…
In this paper, we give a Prym-Tjurin construction for the cohomology and the Chow groups for a cubic hypersurface. On the space of lines meeting a given rational curve, there is the incidence correspondence. This correspondence induces an action on both of the primitive cohomology and the primitive Chow groups. We first show that this action satisfies a quadratic equation. Then the Abel-Jacobi homomorphism induces an isomorphism between the primitive cohomology of the cubic hypersurface and the Prym-Tjurin part of the above action. This also holds for Chow groups with rational coefficients.
We prove some de Rham theorems on bounded subanalytic submanifolds of $\R^n$ (not necessarily compact). We show that the $L^1$ cohomology of such a submanifold is isomorphic to its singular homology. In the case where the closure of the underlying manifold has only isolated singularities this implies that the $L^1$ cohomology is Poincaré dual to $L^\infty$ cohomology (in dimension $j <m-1$). In general, Poincaré duality is related to the so-called $L^1$ Stokes' Property. For oriented manifolds, we show that the $L^1$ Stokes' property holds if and only if integration realizes a nondegenerate pa…
A well known conjecture asserts that a cubic fourfold $X$ whose transcendental cohomology $T_X$ can not be realized as the transcendental cohomology of a $K3$ surface is irrational. Since the geometry of cubic fourfolds is intricately related to the existence of algebraic $2$-cycles on them, it is natural to ask for the most algebraic cubic fourfolds $X$ to which this conjecture is still applicable. In this paper, we show that for an appropriate `algebraicity index' $κ_X$, there exists a unique class of cubics maximizing $κ_X$, not having an associated $K3$ surface; namely, the cubic fourfolds…
The Cayley--Salmon theorem implies the existence of a 27-sheeted covering space specifying lines contained in smooth cubic surfaces over $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we compute the rational cohomology of the total space of this cover, using the spectral sequence in the method of simplicial resolution developed by Vassiliev. The covering map is an isomorphism in cohomology (in fact of mixed Hodge structures) and the cohomology ring is isomorphic to that of $PGL(4,\mathbb{C})$. We derive as a consequence of our theorem that over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ the average number of lines on a cub…
We present a simple method to calculate the Stokes matrix for the quantum cohomology of the projective spaces ${CP}^{k-1}$ in terms of certain hypergeometric group. We present also an algebraic variety whose fibre integrals are solutions to the given hypergeometric equation.
We show that on the Jacobian $(JC,θ)$ of a smooth curve $C$ of genus $g$, any effective cycle in $JC$ with cohomology class $θ^d/d!$ is a translate of $W_{g-d}(C)$ or $-W_{g-d}(C)$. We then use this result to prove that for $1<d<g$, the Jacobian locus (\resp the locus of intermediate Jacobians of cubic threefolds) is an irreducible component of the set of principally polarized abelian varieties of dimension $g$ for which $θ^d/d!$ (\resp $θ^3/3!$) is the class of an effective algebraic cycle. Moreover, on the intermediate Jacobian of a generic cubic threefold, $θ^2/2!$ is not the class of an ef…
In this paper we compute the distributions of various markings on smooth cubic surfaces defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, for example the distribution of pairs of points, `tritangents' or `double sixes'. We also compute the (rational) cohomology of certain associated bundles and covers over complex numbers.
We give an interim report on some improvements and generalizations of the Abbott-Kedlaya-Roe method to compute the zeta function of a nondegenerate ample hypersurface in a projectively normal toric variety over $\mathbb{F}_p$ in linear time in $p$. These are illustrated with a number of examples including K3 surfaces, Calabi-Yau threefolds, and a cubic fourfold. The latter example is a non-special cubic fourfold appearing in the Ranestad-Voisin coplanar divisor on moduli space; this verifies that the coplanar divisor is not a Noether-Lefschetz divisor in the sense of Hassett.
Let X be a smooth cubic threefold. We can associate two objects to X: the intermediate Jacobian J and the Fano surface F parametrising lines on X. By a theorem of Clemens and Griffiths, the Fano surface can be embedded in the intermediate Jacobian and the cohomology class of its image is minimal. In this paper we show that if X is generic, the Fano surface is the only surface of minimal class in J.
The quantum cohomology algebra of a projective manifold X is the cohomology H(X,Q) endowed with a different algebra structure, which takes into account the geometry of rational curves in X. We show that this algebra takes a remarkably simple form for complete intersections when the dimension is large enough w.r.t. the degree. As a reward we get a number of surprising enumerative formulas relating lines, conics and twisted cubics on X.
We establish a connection between the theory of cyclotomic ideal class groups and the theory of "geometric" Galois modules and obtain results on the Galois module structure of coherent cohomology groups of Galois covers of varieties over Z. In particular, we show that an invariant that measures the obstruction to the existence of a virtual normal integral basis for the coherent cohomology of such covers is annihilated by a product of certain Bernoulli numbers with orders of even K-groups of Z. We also show that the existence of such a normal integral basis is closely connected to the truth of …
We prove the Dubrovin's conjecture for the Stokes matrices for the quantum cohomology of orbifold projective lines. The conjecture states that the Stokes matrix of the first structure connection of the Frobenius manifold constructed from the Gromov-Witten theory coincides with the Euler matrix of a full exceptional collection of the bounded derived category of the coherent sheaves. Our proof is based on the homological mirror symmetry, primitive forms of affine cusp polynomials and the Picard-Lefschetz theory.
We prove relations between fractional linear cycles in Bloch's integral cubical higher Chow complex in codimension two of number fields, which correspond to functional equations of the dilogarithm. These relations suffice, as we shall demonstrate with a few examples, to write down enough relations in Bloch's integral higher Chow group CH^2(F,3) for certain number fields F to detect torsion cycles. Using the regulator map to Deligne cohomology, one can check the non-triviality of the torsion cycles thus obtained. Using this combination of methods, we obtain explicit higher Chow cycles generatin…
In this paper we prove that, for every $r \geq 2$, the moduli space $M^s_X(r;c_1,c_2)$ of rank $r$ stable vector bundles with Chern classes $c_1=rH$ and $c_2=(3r^2-r)/2$ on a nonsingular cubic surface $X \subset \mathbb{P}^3$ contains a nonempty smooth open subset formed by ACM bundles, i.e. vector bundles with no intermediate cohomology. The bundles we consider for this study are extremal for the number of generators of the corresponding module (these are known as Ulrich bundles), so we also prove the existence of indecomposable Ulrich bundles of arbitrarily high rank on $X$.
In this paper, we study the structure of the quantum cohomology ring of a projective hypersurface with non-positive 1st Chern class. We prove a theorem which suggests that the mirror transformation of the quantum cohomology of a projective Calabi-Yau hypersurface has a close relation with the ring of symmetric functions, or with Schur polynomials. With this result in mind, we propose a generalized mirror transformation on the quantum cohomology of a hypersurface with negative first Chern class and construct an explicit prediction formula for three point Gromov-Witten invariants up to cubic rat…
In this article formulas for the quantum product of a rational surface are given, and used to give an algebro-geometric proof of the associativity of the quantum product for strict Del Pezzo surfaces, those for which $-K$ is very ample. An argument for the associativity in general is proposed, which also avoids resorting to the symplectic category. The enumerative predictions of Kontsevich and Manin concerning the degree of the rational curve locus in a linear system are recovered. The associativity of the quantum product for the cubic surface is shown to be essentially equivalent to the class…
Let $(A,Θ)$ be a principally polarised abelian variety, and let Y be a subvariety. Pareschi and Popa conjectured that Y has minimal cohomology class if and only if the structure sheaf of Y satisfies a property that they call M-regularity. Let now X be a smooth cubic threefold. By a classical result due to Clemens and Griffiths, its intermediate Jacobian J(X) is a principally polarised abelian variety; furthermore the Fano surface of lines on X can be embedded in J(X) and has minimal cohomology class. In this short note we show that its structure sheaf is M-regular.
An involution on a surface induces involutions on the cohomology, the Chow group and the Brauer group of the surface. We give a detailed study of those actions. We show that the odd part of these groups can be used to describe the geometry of cubic fourfolds and conic bundles over $\mathbb{P}^3$.
In this paper, we continue the study of boundedness questions for (simply connected) smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds commenced in arXiv:1706.01268. The diffeomorphism class of such a threefold is known to be determined up to finitely many possibilities by the integral middle cohomology and two integral forms on the integral second cohomology, namely the cubic cup-product form and the linear form given by cup-product with the second chern class. The question addressed in both papers is whether knowledge of these cubic and linear forms determines the threefold up to finitely many families, that is …
We study the moduli space $\fM^s(6;3,6,4)$ of simple rank 6 vector bundles $\E$ on $\PP^3$ with Chern polynomial $1+3t+6t^2+4t^3$ and properties of these bundles, especially we prove some partial results concerning their stability. We first recall how these bundles are related to the construction of sextic nodal surfaces in $\PP^3$ having an even set of 56 nodes (cf. \cite{CaTo}). We prove that there is an open set, corresponding to the simple bundles with minimal cohomology, which is irreducible of dimension 19 and bimeromorphic to an open set $\fA^0$ of the G.I.T. quotient space of the proje…
In this paper we consider a conjecture formulated by the second author in occasion of the 1998 ICM in Berlin (arXiv:math/9807034v2). This conjecture states the equivalence, for a Fano variety $X$, of the semisimplicity condition for the quantum cohomology $QH^\bullet(X)$ with the existence condition of full exceptional collections in the derived category of coherent sheaves $\mathcal D^b(X)$. Furthermore, in its quantitative formulation, the conjecture also prescribes an explicit relationship between the monodromy data of $QH^\bullet(X)$ and characteristic classes of both $X$ and objects of th…
