We establish a connection between the theory of cyclotomic ideal class groups and the theory of "geometric" Galois modules and obtain results on the Galois module structure of coherent cohomology groups of Galois covers of varieties over Z. In particular, we show that an invariant that measures the obstruction to the existence of a virtual normal integral basis for the coherent cohomology of such covers is annihilated by a product of certain Bernoulli numbers with orders of even K-groups of Z. We also show that the existence of such a normal integral basis is closely connected to the truth of the Kummer-Vandiver conjecture for the prime divisors of the degree of the cover. Our main tool is a theory of "hypercubic structures" for line bundles over group schemes.
Let V be a nonsingular projective algebraic variety of dimension n. Suppose there exists a very ample divisor D such that D^n=6 and dim H^0(V, O(D))=n+3. Then, (V, D) defines a D_6-Galois embedding if and only if it is a Galois closure variety of a smooth cubic in P^{n+1} with respect to a suitable projection center such that the pull back of hyperplane of P^n is linearly equivalent to D.
We study the moduli space $\widetilde{\calM}$ of marked cubic surfaces. By classical work of A.\,B. Coble, this has a compactification $\widetilde{M}$, which is linearly acted upon by the group $W(E_6)$. $\widetilde{M}$ is given as the intersection of 30 cubics in $\bP^9$. For the morphism $\widetilde{calM} \to \bP(1,2,3,4,5)$ forgetting the marking, followed by Clebsch's invariant map, we give explicit formulas. I.e., Clebsch's invariants are expressed in terms of Coble's irrational invariants. As an application, we give an affirmative answer to the inverse Galois problem for cubic surfaces o…
In the present paper, we will show that three apparently disjoint objects: Galois representations arising from twenty-seven lines on a cubic surface (number theory and arithmetic algebraic geometry), Picard modular forms (automorphic forms), rigid Calabi-Yau threefolds and their arithmetic (Diophantine geometry) are intimately related to Hessian polyhedra and their invariants. We construct a Galois representation whose image is a proper subgroup of $W(E_6)$, the Weyl group of the exceptional Lie algebra $E_6$. We give a conjecture about the identification of two different kinds of $L$-function…
Katz and Sarnak predicted that the one level density of the zeros of a family of $L$-functions would fall into one of five categories. In this paper, we show that the one level density for $L$-functions attached to cubic Galois number fields falls into the category associated with unitary matrices.
We show that there are $O_\varepsilon(H^{1.5+\varepsilon})$ monic, cubic polynomials with integer coefficients bounded by $H$ in absolute value whose Galois group is $A_3$. We also show that the order of magnitude for $D_4$ quartics is $H^2 (\log H)^2$, and that the respective counts for $A_4$, $V_4$, $C_4$ are $O(H^{2.91})$, $O(H^2 \log H)$, $O(H^2 \log H)$. Our work establishes that irreducible non-$S_3$ cubic polynomials are less numerous than reducible ones, and similarly in the quartic setting: these are the first two solved cases of a 1936 conjecture made by van der Waerden.
We give a complete description of the arboreal Galois representation of a certain postcritically finite cubic polynomial over a large class of number fields and for a large class of basepoints. This is the first such example that is not conjugate to a power map, Chebyshev polynomial, or Lattès map. The associated Galois action on an infinite ternary rooted tree has Hausdorff dimension bounded strictly between that of the infinite wreath product of cyclic groups and that of the infinite wreath product of symmetric groups. We deduce a zero-density result for prime divisors in an orbit under this…
We report on our project to construct non-singular cubic surfaces over $\bbQ$ with a rational line. Our method is to start with degree 4 Del Pezzo surfaces in diagonal form. For these, we develop an explicit version of Galois descent.
We show that if over some number field there exists a certain diagonal plane cubic curve that is locally solvable everywhere, but that does not have points over any cubic galois extension of the number field, then the algebraic part of the Brauer-Manin obstruction is not the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for K3 surfaces.
In this paper, we study simple cubic fields in the function field setting, and also generalize the notion of a set of exceptional units to cubic function fields, namely the notion of $k$-exceptional units. We give a simple proof that the Galois simple cubic function fields are the immediate analog of Shanks simplest cubic number fields. In addition to computing the invariants, including a formula for the regulator, we compute the class numbers of the Galois simple cubic function fields over $\mathbb{F}_{5}$ and $\mathbb{F}_{7}$ using truncated Euler products. Finally, as an additional applicat…
Although it is not known which groups can appear as torsion groups of elliptic curves over cubic number fields, it is known which groups can appear for infinitely many non-isomorphic curves. We denote the set of these groups as $S$. In this paper we deal with three problems concerning the torsion of elliptic curves over cubic fields. First, we study the possible torsion groups of elliptic curves that appear over the field with smallest absolute value of its discriminant and having Galois group $S_3$ and over the field with smallest absolute value of its discriminant and having Galois group $\Z…
We classify all cubic function fields over any finite field, particularly developing a complete Galois theory which includes those cases when the constant field is missing certain roots of unity. In doing so, we find criteria which allow one to easily read ramification and splitting data from the generating equation, in analogy to the known theory for Artin-Schreier and Kummer extensions. We also describe explicit irreducibility criteria, integral bases, and Galois actions in terms of canonical generating equations.
The Stickelberger elements attached to an abelian extension of number fields conjecturally participate, under certain conditions, in annihilator relations involving higher algebraic K-groups. In [Victor P. Snaith, Stark's conjecture and new Stickelberger phenomena, Canad. J. Math. 58 (2) (2006) 419--448], Snaith introduces canonical Galois modules hoped to appear in annihilator relations generalising and improving those involving Stickelberger elements. In this paper we study the first of these modules, corresponding to the classical Stickelberger element, and prove a connection with the Stark…
We propose a candidate, which we call the fractional Galois ideal after Snaith's fractional ideal, for replacing the classical Stickelberger ideal associated to an abelian extension of number fields. The Stickelberger ideal can be seen as gathering information about those $L$-functions of the extension which are non-zero at the special point $s = 0$, and was conjectured by Brumer to give annihilators of class-groups viewed as Galois modules. An earlier version of the fractional Galois ideal extended the Stickelberger ideal to include $L$-functions with a simple zero at $s = 0$, and was shown b…
We construct explicit examples of cubic surfaces over $\bbQ$ such that the 27 lines are acted upon by the index two subgroup of the maximal possible Galois group. This is the simple group of order $25 920$. Our examples are given in pentahedral normal form with rational coefficients. For such cubic surfaces, we study the discriminant and show its relation to the index two subgroup. On the corresponding parameter space, we search for rational points, discuss their asymptotic, and construct an accumulating subvariety.
We prove three theorems concerning the Hopf-Galois module structure of fractional ideals in a finite tamely ramified extension of $ p $-adic fields or number fields which is $ H $-Galois for a commutative Hopf algebra $ H $. Firstly, we show that if $ L/K $ is a tame Galois extension of $ p $-adic fields then each fractional ideal of $ L $ is free over its associated order in $ H $. We also show that this conclusion remains valid if $ L/K $ is merely almost classically Galois. Finally, we show that if $ L/K $ is an abelian extension of number fields then every ambiguous fractional ideal of $ L…
To a family of smooth projective cubic surfaces one can canonically associate a family of abelian fivefolds. In characteristic zero, we calculate the Hodge groups of the abelian varieties which arise in this way. In arbitrary characteristic we calculate the monodromy group of the universal family of abelian varieties, and thus show that the Galois group of the 27 lines on a suitably general cubic surface in positive characteristic is as large as possible.
Let $K$ be a number field or a function field. Let $f\in K(x)$ be a rational function of degree $d\geq 2$, and let $β\in\mathbb{P}^1(K)$. For all $n\in\mathbb{N}\cup\{\infty\}$, the Galois groups $G_n(β)=\text{Gal}(K(f^{-n}(β))/K)$ embed into $\text{Aut}(T_n)$, the automorphism group of the $d$-ary rooted tree of level $n$. A major problem in arithmetic dynamics is the arboreal finite index problem: determining when $[\text{Aut}(T_\infty):G_\infty]<\infty$. When $f$ is a cubic polynomial and $K$ is a function field of transcendence degree $1$ over an algebraic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$, we res…
In cyclic, degree 8 extensions of algebraic number fields $N/K$, ambiguous ideals in N are canonical $\mathbb{Z}[C_8]$-modules. Their $\mathbb{Z}[C_8]$-structure is determined here. It is described in terms of indecomposable modules and determined by ramification invariants. Although infinitely many indecomposable $\mathbb{Z}[C_8]$-modules are available (classification by Yakovlev), only 23 appear.
In this article, we study the pseudo-isomorphism class of the dual fine Selmer group $X$ attached to a $p$-adic Galois deformation whose deformation ring $Λ$ is isomorphic to the ring of formal power series. By using the "Kolyvagin system" arising from a given Euler system $c$, we shall construct ideals $C_i(c)$ of $Λ$, and prove that the ideals $C_i(c)$ approximate the higher Fitting ideals of $X$ under suitable hypothesis. In particular, we shall prove that the ideals $C_i(c)$ arising from the Euler system of Beilinson-Kato elements determine the pseudo-isomorphism classes of the dual fine S…
We study a variant of the Hasse principle for finite Galois modules, allowing exceptional sets of positive density. For a Galois module whose underlying abelian group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{F}_p^{\oplus r}$ ($r \leq 2$), we show that the product of the restriction maps for places in a set of places $S$ is injective if the Dirichlet density of $S$ is strictly larger than $1 - p^{-r}$. We give applications to the local-global divisibility problem for elliptic curves and the Hasse principle for flexes on plane cubic curves.
Let $X$ be a minimal cubic surface over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. The image $Γ$ of the Galois group $\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q / \mathbb{F}_q)$ in the group $\operatorname{Aut}(\operatorname{Pic}(\overline{X}))$ is a cyclic subgroup of the Weyl group $W(E_6)$. There are $25$ conjugacy classes of cyclic subgroups in $W(E_6)$, and $5$ of them correspond to minimal cubic surfaces. It is natural to ask which conjugacy classes come from minimal cubic surfaces over a given finite field. In this paper we give a partial answer to this question and present many explicit examples.
We consider $p$-adic families of Siegel eigenforms of genus $2$ and finite slope, defined as local pieces of an eigenvariety and equipped with a suitable integral structure. Under some assumptions on the residual image, we show that the image of the Galois representation associated with a family is big, in the sense that a Lie algebra attached to it contains a congruence subalgebra of non-zero level. We call Galois level of the family the largest such level. We show that it is trivial when the residual representation has full image. When the residual representation is a symmetric cube, the zer…
Weinberger in 1972, proved that the ring of integers of a number field with unit rank at least $1$ is a principal ideal domain if and only if it is a Euclidean domain, provided the generalised Riemann hypothesis holds. Lenstra extended the notion of Euclidean domains in order to capture Dedekind domains with finite cyclic class group and proved an analogous theorem in this setup. More precisely, he showed that the class group of the ring of integers of a number field with unit rank at least $1$ is cyclic if and only if it has a Euclidean ideal class, provided the generalised Riemann hypothesis…
Let n be an odd number and F an imaginary quadratic field with odd discriminant. We show that there exists infinitely many cubic fields K such that the class number of K is divisible by n and the Galois closure of K contains F.
It is well known that the Galois group of an extension puts constraints on the structure of the relative ideal class groups. Using only basic parts of the theory of group representations, we give a unified approach to such results.
For a totally real field $F$, a finite extension $\mathbf{F}$ of $\mathbf{F}_p$ and a Galois character $χ: G_F \to \mathbf{F}^{\times}$ unramified away from a finite set of places $Σ\supset \{\mathfrak{p} \mid p\}$ consider the Bloch-Kato Selmer group $H:=H^1_Σ(F, χ^{-1})$. In an earlier paper of the authors it was proved that the number $d$ of isomorphism classes of (non-semisimple, reducible) residual representations $\overlineρ$ giving rise to lines in $H$ which are modular by some $ρ_f$ (also unramified outside $Σ$) satisfies $d \geq n:= \dim_{\mathbf{F}} H$. This was proved under the assu…
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois extension of local or global fields in characteristic $0$ or $p$ with nonabelian Galois group $G$, and let ${\mathfrak B}$ be a $G$-stable fractional ideal of $L$. We show that ${\mathfrak B}$ is free over its associated order in $K[G]$ if and only if it is free over its associated order in the Hopf algebra giving the canonical nonclassical Hopf-Galois structure on the extension.
For a cubic algebraic extension $K$ of $\mathbb{Q}$, the behavior of the ideal counting function is considered in this paper. Let $a_{K}(n)$ be the number of integral ideals of the field $K$ with norm $n$. An asymptotic formula is given for the sum $$ \sum\limits_{n_{1}^2+n_{2}^2\leq x}a_{K}(n_{1}^2+n_{2}^2). $$
Reduced ideals have been defined in the context of integer rings in quadratic number fields, and they are closely tied to the continued fraction algorithm. The notion of this type of ideal extends naturally to number fields of higher degree. In the case of pure cubic fields, generated by cube roots of integers, a convenient integral basis provides a means for identifying reduced ideals in these fields. We define integer sequences whose terms are in correspondence with some of these ideals, suggesting a generalization of continued fractions.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve defined over $\Q$, and let $G$ be the torsion group $E(K)_{tors}$ for some cubic field $K$ which does not occur over $\Q$. In this paper, we determine over which types of cubic number fields (cyclic cubic, non-Galois totally real cubic, complex cubic or pure cubic) $G$ can occur, and if so, whether it can occur infinitely often or not. Moreover, if it occurs, we provide elliptic curves $E/\Q$ together with cubic fields $K$ so that $G= E(K)_{tors}$.
We generalize the Chebotarev density formulas of Dawsey (2017) and Alladi (1977) to the setting of arbitrary finite Galois extensions of number fields $L/K$. In particular, if $C \subset G = \textrm{Gal}(L/K)$ is a conjugacy class, then we establish that the Chebotarev density is the following limit of partial sums of ideals of $K$: \[ -\lim_{X\rightarrow\infty} \sum_{\substack{2\leq N(I)\leq X \\ I \in S(L/K; C)}} \frac{μ_K(I)}{N(I)} = \frac{|C|}{|G|}, \] where $μ_K(I)$ denotes the generalized Möbius function and $S(L/K;C)$ is the set of ideals $I\subset \mathcal{O}_K$ such that $I$ has a uni…
We give a complete description of the normal subgroups of arboreal Galois groups of Belyi maps. The normal groups form a unique chief series. We also carefully compute the discriminate of the iterate of a polynomial minus an algebraic number, which allows us to predict when a such discriminate is a perfect square in the base field or intermediate field for a postcritically finite polynomials (PCF). As a consequence we are able to find another PCF cubic polynomial that has the same arboreal Galois group as the one of Belyi maps.
Let $K$ be a fixed number field, assumed to be Galois over $\mathbb Q$. Let $r$ and $f$ be fixed integers with $f$ positive. Given an elliptic curve $E$, defined over $K$, we consider the problem of counting the number of degree $f$ prime ideals of $K$ with trace of Frobenius equal to $r$. Except in the case $f=2$, we show that "on average," the number of such prime ideals with norm less than or equal to $x$ satisfies an asymptotic identity that is in accordance with standard heuristics. This work is related to the classical Lang-Trotter conjecture and extends the work of several authors.
We realize Frobenius conjugacy classes in Galois groups of certain $q$-polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ using specific degree 1 ideals. We combine this with methods from elementary linear algebra and group theory to realize transvections in some linear Galois groups. This enables the Galois group to be identified as a known classical group in several reasonably general cases.
In 1972, Serre showed that the adelic Galois representation associated to a non-CM elliptic curve over a number field has open image in GL_2(\hat{Z}). In Greicius' thesis, he develops necessary and sufficient criteria for determining when this representation is actually surjective and exhibits such an example. However, verifying these criteria turns out to be difficult in practice; Greicius describes tests for them that apply only to semistable elliptic curves over a specific class of cubic number fields. In this paper, we extend Greicius' methods in several directions. First, we consider the …
For each finite subgroup $G$ of $PGL_2(\mathbb{Q})$, and for each integer $n$ coprime to $6$, we construct explicitly infinitely many Galois extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ with group $G$ and whose ideal class group has $n$-rank at least $\#G-1$. This gives new $n$-rank records for class groups of number fields.
We discuss the structure of the endomorphism algebras of the jacobians of superelliptic curves y^q=f(x) where q is a prime power and f(x) is an irreducible cubic or quartic polynomial over the field of rational functions k(t) in characteristic zero, whose Galois group is the full symmetric group.
The Polya group of a number field K is the subgroup of the class group of K generated by the classes of the products of the maximal ideals with same norm. A Polya field is a number field whose Polya group is trivial. Our purpose is to start with known assertions about Polya fields to find results concerning Polya groups. In this second paper we describe the Polya group of some non-galoisian extensions of Q.
The Polya group of a number field K is the subgroup of the class group of K generated by the classes of the products of the maximal ideals with same norm. A Polya field is a number field whose Polya group is trivial. Our purpose is to start with known assertions about Polya fields to find results concerning Polya groups. This first paper inspired by Zantema's results focuses on the Polya group of the compositum of two galoisian extensions of Q.
Let $ L/K $ be a finite separable extension of local or global fields in any characteristic, let $ H_{1}, H_{2} $ be two Hopf algebras giving Hopf-Galois structures on the extension, and suppose that the actions of $ H_{1}, H_{2} $ on $ L $ commute. We show that a fractional ideal $ {\mathfrak B} $ of $ L $ is free over its associated order in $ H_{1} $ if and only if it is free over its associated order in $ H_{2} $. We also study which properties these associated orders share.
Using the action of the Galois group of a normal extension of number fields, we generalize and symmetrize various fundamental statements in algebra and algebraic number theory concerning splitting types of prime ideals, factorization types of polynomials modulo primes, and cycle types of the Galois groups of polynomials. One remarkable example is the removal of all artificial constraints from the Kummer-Dedekind Theorem that relates splitting and factorization patterns. Finally, we present an elementary proof that the discriminant of the splitting field of a monic irreducible polynomial with i…
