We propose a candidate, which we call the fractional Galois ideal after Snaith's fractional ideal, for replacing the classical Stickelberger ideal associated to an abelian extension of number fields. The Stickelberger ideal can be seen as gathering information about those $L$-functions of the extension which are non-zero at the special point $s = 0$, and was conjectured by Brumer to give annihilators of class-groups viewed as Galois modules. An earlier version of the fractional Galois ideal extended the Stickelberger ideal to include $L$-functions with a simple zero at $s = 0$, and was shown by the present author to provide class-group annihilators not existing in the Stickelberger ideal. The version presented in this article deals with $L$-functions of arbitrary order of vanishing at $s = 0$, and we give evidence using results of Popescu and Rubin that it is closely related to the Fitting ideal of the class-group, a canonical ideal of annihilators. Finally, we prove an equality involving Stark elements and class-groups originally due to Büyükboduk, but under a slightly different assumption, the advantage being that we need none of the Kolyvagin system machinery used in the original proof.
Let $ρ$ be the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to a cuspidal, regular algebraic, polarizable automorphic representation of $GL_n$. Assuming only that $ρ$ satisfies an irreducibility condition, we prove the vanishing of the adjoint Bloch--Kato Selmer group attached to $ρ$. This generalizes previous work of the author and James Newton.
Let $K$ be a $p$-adic field and $E$ an elliptic curve over $K$ with potential good reduction. For some large Galois extensions $L$ of $K$ containing all $p$-power roots of unity, we show the vanishing of certain Galois cohomology groups of $L$ with values in the $p$-adic representation associated with $E$. This generalizes some results of Coates, Sujatha and Wintenberger.
Let E/Q be an elliptic curve and p be a prime number, and let G be the Galois group of the extension of Q obtained by adjoining the coordinates of the p-torsion points on E. We determine all cases when the Galois cohomology group H^1(G, E[p]) does not vanish, and investigate the analogous question for E[p^i] when i>1. We include an application to the verification of certain cases of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, and another application to the Grunwald-Wang problem for elliptic curves.
The Stickelberger elements attached to an abelian extension of number fields conjecturally participate, under certain conditions, in annihilator relations involving higher algebraic K-groups. In [Victor P. Snaith, Stark's conjecture and new Stickelberger phenomena, Canad. J. Math. 58 (2) (2006) 419--448], Snaith introduces canonical Galois modules hoped to appear in annihilator relations generalising and improving those involving Stickelberger elements. In this paper we study the first of these modules, corresponding to the classical Stickelberger element, and prove a connection with the Stark…
We prove three theorems concerning the Hopf-Galois module structure of fractional ideals in a finite tamely ramified extension of $ p $-adic fields or number fields which is $ H $-Galois for a commutative Hopf algebra $ H $. Firstly, we show that if $ L/K $ is a tame Galois extension of $ p $-adic fields then each fractional ideal of $ L $ is free over its associated order in $ H $. We also show that this conclusion remains valid if $ L/K $ is merely almost classically Galois. Finally, we show that if $ L/K $ is an abelian extension of number fields then every ambiguous fractional ideal of $ L…
A well known result of Iwaniec and Sarnak states that for at least one third of the primitive Dirichlet characters to a large modulus q, the associated L-functions do not vanish at the central point. When q is a large power of a fixed prime, we prove the same proportion already among the primitive characters of any given order. The set of primitive characters modulo q of a given order can be described as an orbit under the action of the Galois group of the corresponding cyclotomic field. We also prove a positive proportion of nonvanishing within substantially shorter orbits generated by interm…
In this article we prove a local Riemman-Hurwitz formula which compares the dimensions of the spaces of vanishing cycles in a finite Galois cover of type (p,p,...,p) between formal germs of p-adic curves and which generalises the formula proven by the first author in the case of Galois covers of degree p. We also investigate the problem of the existence of a torsor structure for a finite Galois cover of type (p,p,...,p) between p-adic schemes.
A major difficult problem in Galois theory is the characterization of profinite groups which are realizable as absolute Galois groups of fields. Recently the Kernel $n$-Unipotent Conjecture and the Vanishing $n$-Massey Conjecture for $n\geq 3$ were formulated. These conjectures evolved in the last forty years as a byproduct of the application of topological methods to Galois cohomology. We show that both of these conjectures are true for odd rigid fields. This is the first case of a significant family of fields where both of the conjectures are verified besides fields whose Galois groups of $p…
Let p be a prime. We study pro-p groups of p-absolute Galois type, as defined by Lam-Liu-Sharifi-Wake-Wang. We prove that the pro-p completion of the right-angled Artin group associated to a chordal simplicial graph is of p-absolute Galois type, and moreover it satisfies a strong version of the Massey vanishing property. Also, we prove that Demushkin groups are of p-absolute Galois type, and that the free pro-p product -- and, under certain conditions, the direct product -- of two pro-p groups of p-absolute Galois type satisfying the Massey vanishing property is again a pro-p group of p-absolu…
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois extension of local or global fields in characteristic $0$ or $p$ with nonabelian Galois group $G$, and let ${\mathfrak B}$ be a $G$-stable fractional ideal of $L$. We show that ${\mathfrak B}$ is free over its associated order in $K[G]$ if and only if it is free over its associated order in the Hopf algebra giving the canonical nonclassical Hopf-Galois structure on the extension.
Using Shimura's reciprocity law, we calculate the Galois action on the special values of theta functions associated to primitive Dirichlet characters of odd conductor, normalised by the Dedekind eta function, at the point i. As a consequence, we prove some experimental results of Cohen and Zagier and we deduce a partial result on the non-vanishing of these special theta values with prime conductor.
We study the behavior of Iwasawa invariants among ordinary deformations of a fixed residual Galois representation taking values in a reductive algebraic group G. In particular, under the assumption that these Selmer groups are cotorsion modules over the Iwasawa algebra, we show that the vanishing of the mu invariant is independent of the deformation, while the lambda invariant depends only on the ramification. This generalizes work of Greenberg-Vatsal and Emerton-Pollack and the author in the case G = GL(2).
Let $ L/K $ be a finite separable extension of local or global fields in any characteristic, let $ H_{1}, H_{2} $ be two Hopf algebras giving Hopf-Galois structures on the extension, and suppose that the actions of $ H_{1}, H_{2} $ on $ L $ commute. We show that a fractional ideal $ {\mathfrak B} $ of $ L $ is free over its associated order in $ H_{1} $ if and only if it is free over its associated order in $ H_{2} $. We also study which properties these associated orders share.
We study the vanishing of four-fold Massey products in mod p Galois cohomology. First, we describe a sufficient condition, which is simply expressed by the vanishing of some cup-products, in direct analogy with the work of Guillot, Mináč and Topaz for p=2. For local fields with enough roots of unity, we prove that this sufficient condition is also necessary, and we ask whether this is a general fact. We provide a simple splitting variety, that is, a variety which has a rational point if and only if our sufficient condition is satisfied. It has rational points over local fields, and so, if it s…
Let p be a prime number and F a field containing a root of unity of order p. We relate recent results on vanishing of triple Massey products in the mod-p Galois cohomology of F, due to Hopkins, Wickelgren, Minac, and Tan, to classical results in the theory of central simple algebras. For global fields, we prove a stronger form of the vanishing property.
Let $p$ be a prime. We produce two new families of pro-$p$ groups which are not realizable as absolute Galois groups of fields. To prove this we use the 1-smoothness property of absolute Galois pro-$p$ groups. Moreover, we show in these families one has one-relator pro-$p$ groups which may not be ruled out as absolute Galois groups employing the quadraticity of Galois cohomology (a consequence of Rost-Voevodsky Theorem), or the vanishing of Massey products in Galois cohomology.
We show that the absolute Galois group of any field has the vanishing triple Massey product property. Several corollaries for the structure of maximal pro-$p$-quotient of absolute Galois groups are deduced. Furthermore, the vanishing of some higher Massey products is proved.
In this paper, we study the Selmer groups of two congruent Galois representations over an admissible $p$-adic Lie extension. We will show that under appropriate congruence condition, if the dual Selmer group of one satisfies the $\M_H(G)$-property, so will the other. In the event that the $\M_H(G)$-property holds, and assuming certain further hypothesis on the decomposition of primes in the $p$-adic Lie extension, we compare the ranks of the $π$-free quotient of the two dual Selmer groups. We then apply our results to compare the characteristic elements attached to the Selmer groups. We also s…
We show that any triple Massey product with respect to prime 2 contains 0 whenever it is defined over any field. This extends the theorem of M. J. Hopkins and K. G. Wickelgren, from global fields to any fields. This is the first time when the vanishing of any $n$-Massey product for some prime $p$ has been established for all fields. This leads to a strong restriction on the shape of relations in the maximal pro-2-quotients of absolute Galois groups, which was out of reach until now. We also develop an extension of Serre's transgression method to detect triple commutators in relations of pro-$p…
We prove the vanishing of the geometric Bloch-Kato Selmer group for the adjoint representation of a Galois representation associated to regular algebraic polarized cuspidal automorphic representations under an assumption on the residual image. Using this, we deduce that the localization and completion of a certain universal deformation ring for the residual representation at the characteristic zero point induced from the automorphic representation is formally smooth of the correct dimension. We do this by employing the Taylor-Wiles-Kisin patching method together with Kisin's technique of analy…
We construct an Euler system in the cohomology of the tensor product of the Galois representations attached to two modular forms, using elements in the higher Chow groups of products of modular curves. We use this Euler system to prove a finiteness theorem for the strict Selmer group of the Galois representation when the associated p-adic Rankin--Selberg L-function is non-vanishing at s = 1.
The Shafarevich-Tate and Selmer groups arise in the context of Kummer theory for elliptic curves. The finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate group of an elliptic curve $E$ over the field of rational numbers is included in the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectures, and is still an open question. We present an overview of the Shafarevich-Tate and Selmer groups of an elliptic curve in the framework of Galois cohomology. Known results on the finiteness of the Shafarevich-Tate group are mentioned, including results of Coates and Wiles, Rubin, Gross and Zagier, and Kolyvagin. We then prove the vanishing…
We prove a lower bound of the correct order of magnitude in the conductor aspect for small rational moments of Drichlet $L$-functions. Such bounds require new techniques, which is visible from the relationship to non-vanishing results for $L(1/2, χ)$.
Let $N/F$ be an odd degree Galois extension of number fields with Galois group $G$ and rings of integers ${\mathfrak O}_N$ and ${\mathfrak O}_F=\bo$ respectively. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be the unique fractional ${\mathfrak O}_N$-ideal with square equal to the inverse different of $N/F$. Erez has shown that $\mathcal{A}$ is a locally free ${\mathfrak O}[G]$-module if and only if $N/F$ is a so called weakly ramified extension. There have been a number of results regarding the freeness of $\mathcal{A}$ as a $\Z[G]$-module, however this question remains open. In this paper we prove that $\mathcal{A}$ i…
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois CM-extension of number fields with Galois group $G$. In an earlier paper, the author has defined a module $SKu(L/K)$ over the center of the group ring $\mathbb Z[G]$ which coincides with the Sinnott-Kurihara ideal if $G$ is abelian and, in particular, contains many Stickelberger elements. It was shown that a certain conjecture on the integrality of $SKu(L/K)$ implies the minus part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture at an odd prime $p$ for an infinite class of (non-abelian) Galois CM-extensions of number fields which are at most tamely ramified above $p$…
Let L/K be a finite Galois extension of number fields with Galois group G. Let p be a rational prime and let r be a non-positive integer. By examining the structure of the p-adic group ring Z_p[G], we prove many new cases of the p-part of the equivariant Tamagawa number conjecture (ETNC) for the pair (h^0(Spec(L)(r),Z[G])). The same methods can also be applied to other conjectures concerning the vanishing of certain elements in relative algebraic K-groups. We then prove a conjecture of Burns concerning the annihilation of class groups as Galois modules for a wide class of interesting extension…
We consider $L$-functions attached to representations of the Galois group of the function field of a curve over a finite field. Under mild tameness hypotheses, we prove non-vanishing results for twists of these $L$-functions by characters of order prime to the characteristic of the ground field and by certain representations with solvable image. We also allow local restrictions on the twisting representation at finitely many places. Our methods are geometric, and include the Riemann-Roch theorem, the cohomological interpretation of $L$-functions, and some monodromy calculations of Katz. As an …
Let $\K$ be a galois CM extension of $\Q$ and $\K_{\infty}$ its cyclotomic $\Z_p$-extension. Let $A_n$ be the $p$-parts of the class groups in the intermediate subfields $\K_n \subset \K_{\infty}$ and $\rg{A} = \varprojlim_n A_n$. We show that the $p$-rank of $\rg{A}$ is finite, which is equivalent to the vanishing of Iwasawa's constant $μ$ for $\rg{A}$. (Currently withdrawn)
The principal aim of this article is to attach and study $p$-adic $L$-functions to cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations $Π$ of $\mathrm{GL}(2n)$ over a totally real field $F$ admitting a Shalika model. We use a modular symbol approach, along the global lines of the work of Ash and Ginzburg, but our results are more definitive since we draw heavily upon the methods used in the recent and separate works of all the three authors. By construction our $p$-adic $L$-functions are distributions on the Galois group of the maximal abelian extension of $F$ unramified outside $p\infty$. More…
The theme of this work is the study of the Nekovář-Selmer group H^1_f(K,T) attached to a twisted Hida family T of Galois representations and a quadratic number field K. The results that we obtain have the following shape: if a twisted L-function of a suitable modular form in the Hida family has order of vanishing r at most 1 at the central critical point then the rank of H^1_f(K,T) as a module over a certain local Hida-Hecke algebra is equal to r. Under the above assumption, we also show that infinitely many twisted L-functions of modular forms in the Hida family have the same order of vanishi…
In this article, we study the monoid of fractional ideals and the ideal class semigroup of an arbitrary given one dimensional normal domain O obtained by an infinite integral extension of a Dedekind domain. We introduce a notion of "upper semicontinuous functions" whose domain is the maximal spectrum of O equipped with a certain topology, and whose codomain is a certain totally ordered monoid containing the set of real numbers. We construct an isomorphism between a monoid consisting of such upper semicontinuous functions satisfying certain conditions and the monoid of fractional ideals of O. T…
Let E be a rational elliptic curve of conductor N without complex multiplication and let K be an imaginary quadratic field of discriminant D prime to N. Assume that the number of primes dividing N and inert in K is odd, and let H be the ring class field of K of conductor c prime to ND with Galois group G over K. Fix a complex character χof G. Our main result is that if the special value of the χ-twisted L-function of E/K is non-zero then the tensor product (with respect to χ) of the p-Selmer group of E/H with W over Z[G] is 0 for all but finitely many primes p, where W is a suitable finite ext…
