Let $N/F$ be an odd degree Galois extension of number fields with Galois group $G$ and rings of integers ${\mathfrak O}_N$ and ${\mathfrak O}_F=\bo$ respectively. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be the unique fractional ${\mathfrak O}_N$-ideal with square equal to the inverse different of $N/F$. Erez has shown that $\mathcal{A}$ is a locally free ${\mathfrak O}[G]$-module if and only if $N/F$ is a so called weakly ramified extension. There have been a number of results regarding the freeness of $\mathcal{A}$ as a $\Z[G]$-module, however this question remains open. In this paper we prove that $\mathcal{A}$ is free as a $\Z[G]$-module assuming that $N/F$ is weakly ramified and under the hypothesis that for every prime $\wp$ of ${\mathfrak O}$ which ramifies wildly in $N/F$, the decomposition group is abelian, the ramification group is cyclic and $\wp$ is unramified in $F/\Q$.
We make crucial use of a construction due to the first named author which uses Dwork's exponential power series to describe self-dual integral normal bases in Lubin-Tate extensions of local fields. This yields a new and striking relationship between the local norm-resolvent and Galois Gauss sum involved. Our results generalise work of the second named author concerning the case of base field $\Q$.
We define degree two cohomological invariants for G-Galois algebras over fields of characteristic not 2, and use them to give necessary conditions for the existence of a self--dual normal basis. In some cases, we show that these conditions are also sufficient.
We prove that any Galois extension of commutative rings with normal basis and abelian Galois group of odd order has a self dual normal basis. Also we show that if S/R is an unramified extension of number rings with Galois group of odd order and $R$ is totally real then the normal basis does not exist for S/R.
For an odd prime number $p$, we consider degree $p$ extensions $L/K$ of $p$-adic fields with normal closure $\widetilde{L}$ such that the Galois group of $\widetilde{L}/K$ is the dihedral group of order $2p$. We shall prove a complete characterization of the freeness of the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_L$ over its associated order $\mathfrak{A}_{L/K}$ in the unique Hopf-Galois structure on $L/K$, which is analogous to the one already known for cyclic degree $p$ extensions of $p$-adic fields. We shall derive positive and negative results on criteria for the freeness of $\mathcal{O}_L$ as $\mat…
Suppose \( ρ_1 \) and \( ρ_2 \) are two pure Galois representations of the absolute Galois group of a number field $K$ of weights \( k_1 \) and \( k_2 \) respectively, having equal normalized Frobenius traces \( Tr(ρ_1(σ_v)) /Nv^{k_1/2}\) and \( Tr(ρ_2(σ_v)) /Nv^{k_2/2}\) at a set of primes \( v\) of $K$ with positive upper density. Assume further that the algebraic monodromy group of $ρ_1$ is connected and the repesentation is absolutely irreducible. We prove that \( ρ_1 \) and \( ρ_2 \) are twists of each other by power of a Tate twist times a character of finite order. We apply this to modu…
Every Hopf-Galois structure on a finite Galois extension $K/k$ where $G=Gal(K/k)$ corresponds uniquely to a regular subgroup $N\leq B=\operatorname{Perm}(G)$, normalized by $λ(G)\leq B$, in accordance with a theorem of Greither and Pareigis. The resulting Hopf algebra which acts on $K/k$ is $H_N=(K[N])^{λ(G)}$. For a given such $N$ we consider the Hopf-Galois structure arising from a subgroup $P\triangleleft N$ that is also normalized by $λ(G)$. This subgroup gives rise to a Hopf sub-algebra $H_P\subseteq H_N$ with fixed field $F=K^{H_P}$. By the work of Chase and Sweedler, this yields a Hopf-…
Let $K$ be a number field and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve whose mod $\ell$ Galois representation locally has image contained in a group $G$, up to conjugacy. We classify the possible images for the global Galois representation in the case where $G$ is a Cartan subgroup or the normalizer of a Cartan subgroup. When $K = \mathbf{Q}$, we deduce a counterexample to the local-global principle in the case where $G$ is the normalizer of a split Cartan and $\ell = 13$. In particular, there are at least three elliptic curves (up to twist) over $\mathbf{Q}$ whose mod $13$ image of Galois is locally co…
Let S/R be a finite extension of discrete valuation rings of characteristic p>0, and suppose that the corresponding extension L/K of fields of fractions is separable and is H-Galois for some K-Hopf algebra H. Let D_{S/R} be the different of S/R. We show that if S/R is totally ramified and its degree n is a power of p, then any element $ρ$ of L with $v_L(ρ)$ congruent to $-v_L(D_{S/R})-1$ mod n generates L as an H-module. This criterion is best possible. These results generalise to the Hopf-Galois situation recent work of G. Elder for Galois extensions.
The fundamental theorem of arithmetic factorizes any integer into a product of prime numbers. The Jordan-Holder theorem dissolves many groups by their normal series which can be refined into composition series. The main topic of this thesis is the dissociation of field extensions. We dissociate algebraic extensions by their intermediate fields to build a tower with the greatest possible number of Galois steps. We call "galtowerable" the extensions admitting a field tower all the steps of which are Galois extensions,i.e. a "Galois tower". Two Galois towers of the same galtowerable extension (fi…
We present several constraints on the absolute Galois groups G_F of fields F containing a primitive pth root of unity, using restrictions on the cohomology of index p normal subgroups from a previous paper by three of the authors. We first classify all maximal p-elementary abelian-by-order p quotients of such G_F. In the case p>2, each such quotient contains a unique closed index p elementary abelian subgroup. This seems to be the first case in which one can completely classify nontrivial quotients of absolute Galois groups by characteristic subgroups of normal subgroups. We then derive analog…
In 2002, M. A. Tsfasman and S. G. Vlăduţ formulated the generalized Brauer-Siegel conjecture for asymptotically exact families of number fields. In this article, we establish this conjecture for asymptotically good towers and asymptotically bad families of number fields with solvable normal closure.
Given two pure representations of the absolute Galois group of an $\ell$-adic number field with coefficients in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}_p$ (with $\ell\neq p$), we show that the Frobenius-semisimplifications of the associated Weil--Deligne representations are twists of each other by an integral power of certain unramified character if they have equal normalized traces. This is an analogue of a recent result of Patankar and Rajan in the context of local Galois representations.
A Galois scaffold, in a Galois extension of local fields with perfect residue fields, is an adaptation of the normal basis to the valuation of the extension field, and thus can be applied to answer questions of Galois module structure. Here we give a sufficient condition for a Galois scaffold to exist in fully ramified Galois extensions of degree $p^2$ of characteristic $p$ local fields. This condition becomes necessary when we restrict to $p=3$. For extensions $L/K$ of degree $p^2$ that satisfy this condition, we determine the Galois module structure of the ring of integers by finding necessa…
We consider Hopf-Galois structures on separable (but not necessarily normal) field extensions $L/K$ of squarefree degree $n$. If $E/K$ is the normal closure of $L/K$ then $G=\mathrm{Gal}(E/K)$ can be viewed as a permutation group of degree $n$. We show that $G$ has derived length at most $4$, but that many permutation groups of squarefree degree and of derived length $2$ cannot occur. We then investigate in detail the case where $n=pq$ where $q \geq 3$ and $p=2q+1$ are both prime. (Thus $q$ is a Sophie Germain prime and $p$ is a safeprime). We list the permutation groups $G$ which can arise, a…
Let $G$ be a Frobenius group with an abelian Frobenius kernel $F$ and let $k$ be a finite extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We obtain an upper bound for the number of degree $|F|$ algebraic extensions $K/k$ with Galois group $G$ with the norm of the discriminant $\mathcal{N}_{k/\mathbb{Q}}(d_{K/k})$ bounded above by $X$. We extend this method for any group $G$ that has an abelian normal subgroup. If $G$ has an abelian normal subgroup, then we obtain upper bounds for the number of degree $|G|$ extensions $N/k$ with Galois group $G$ with bounded norm of the discriminant. Malle made a conjecture about w…
The Galois representation associated to a p-divisible group over a complete noetherian normal local ring with perfect residue field is described in terms of its Dieudonné display. As a corollary we deduce in arbitrary characteristic Kisin's description of the Galois representation associated to a commutative finite flat p-group scheme over a p-adic discrete valuation ring in terms of its Breuil-Kisin module. This was obtained earlier by W. Kim by a different method.
Let K/F be a cyclic field extension of odd prime degree. We consider Galois embedding problems involving Galois groups with common quotient Gal(K/F) such that corresponding normal subgroups are indecomposable Fp[Gal(K/F)]-modules. For these embedding problems we prove conditions on solvability, formulas for explicit construction, and results on automatic realizability.
Let $ K $ be a number field and let $ L/K $ be a tamely ramified radical extension of prime degree $ p $. If $ K $ contains a primitive $ p^{th} $ root of unity then $ L/K $ is a cyclic Kummer extension; in this case the group algebra $ K[G] $ (with $ G=\mbox{Gal}(L/K) $) gives the unique Hopf-Galois structure on $ L/K $, the ring of algebraic integers $ \mathfrak{O}_L $ is locally free over $ \mathfrak{O}_{K}[G] $ by Noether's theorem, and Gómez Ayala has determined a criterion for $ \mathfrak{O}_L $ to be a free $ \mathfrak{O}_{K}[G] $-module. If $ K $ does not contain a primitive $ p^{th} $…
We define a variant of normal basis, called a {\em Galois scaffolding}, that allows for an easy determination of valuation, and has implications for Galois module structure. We identify fully ramified, elementary abelian extensions of local function fields of characteristic $p$, called {\em one-dimensional}, that, in a particular sense, are as simple as cyclic degree $p$ extensions, and prove the statement in the title above.
We give a complete description of the normal subgroups of arboreal Galois groups of Belyi maps. The normal groups form a unique chief series. We also carefully compute the discriminate of the iterate of a polynomial minus an algebraic number, which allows us to predict when a such discriminate is a perfect square in the base field or intermediate field for a postcritically finite polynomials (PCF). As a consequence we are able to find another PCF cubic polynomial that has the same arboreal Galois group as the one of Belyi maps.
We study the rigid generic fiber $\mathcal{X}^\square_{\overlineρ}$ of the framed deformation space of the trivial representation $\overlineρ: G_K \to \text{GL}_n(k)$ where $k$ is a finite field of characteristic $p>0$ and $G_K$ is the absolute Galois group of a finite extension $K/\mathbf{Q}_p$. Under some mild conditions on $K$ we prove that $\mathcal{X}^\square_{\overlineρ}$ is normal. When $p > n$ we describe its irreducible components, and show Zariski density of its crystalline points.
Let $F/E$ be a finite Galois extension of fields with abelian Galois group $Γ$. A self-dual normal basis for $F/E$ is a normal basis with the additional property that $Tr_{F/E}(g(x),h(x))=δ_{g,h}$ for $g,h\inΓ$. Bayer-Fluckiger and Lenstra have shown that when $char(E)\neq 2$, then $F$ admits a self-dual normal basis if and only if $[F:E]$ is odd. If $F/E$ is an extension of finite fields and $char(E)=2$, then $F$ admits a self-dual normal basis if and only if the exponent of $Γ$ is not divisible by $4$. In this paper we construct self-dual normal basis generators for finite extensions of fini…
We use new over-convergent p-adic exponential power series, inspired by work of Pulita, to build self-dual normal basis generators for the square root of the inverse different of certain abelian weakly ramified extensions of an unramified extension K of Qp. These extensions, whose set we denote by M, are the degree p subextensions over K of Mp,2, the maximal abelian totally, wildly and weakly ramified extension of K, whose norm group contains p. Our construction follows Pickett's, who dealt with the same set M of extensions of K, but does not depend on the choice of a basis of the residue fiel…
We give a simple derivation of the formula for the number of normal elements in an extension of finite fields. Our proof is based on the fact that units in the Galois group ring of a field extension act simply transitively on normal elements.
We determine conditions for the invariance of the gonality under base extension, depending on the numeric invariants of the curve. More generally, we study the Galois descent of morphisms of curves to Brauer-Severi varieties, and also of rational normal scrolls.
We establish a connection between the theory of cyclotomic ideal class groups and the theory of "geometric" Galois modules and obtain results on the Galois module structure of coherent cohomology groups of Galois covers of varieties over Z. In particular, we show that an invariant that measures the obstruction to the existence of a virtual normal integral basis for the coherent cohomology of such covers is annihilated by a product of certain Bernoulli numbers with orders of even K-groups of Z. We also show that the existence of such a normal integral basis is closely connected to the truth of …
Let $p$ be prime. Let $L/K$ be a finite, totally ramified, purely inseparable extension of local fields, $\left[ L:K\right] =p^{n},\;n\geq2.$ It is known that $L/K$ is Hopf Galois for numerous Hopf algebras $H,$ each of which can act on the extension in numerous ways. For a certain collection of such $H$ we construct "Hopf Galois scaffolds" which allow us to obtain a Hopf analogue to the Normal Basis Theorem for $L/K.$ The existence of a scaffold structure depends on the chosen action of $H$ on $L.$ We apply the theory of scaffolds to describe when the fractional ideals of $L$ are free over th…
Given a $p$-adic field $K$ and a prime number $\ell$, we count the total number of the isomorphism classes of $p^\ell$-extensions of $K$ having no intermediate fields. Moreover for each group that can appear as Galois group of the normal closure of such an extension, we count the number of isomorphism classes that contain extensions whose normal closure has Galois group isomorphic to the given group. Finally we determine the ramification groups and the discriminant of the composite of all $p^\ell$-extensions of K with no intermediate fields. The principal tool is a result, proved at the beginn…
Let L be an abelian number field of degree n with Galois group G. In this paper we study how to compute efficiently a normal integral basis for L, if there is at least one, assuming that the group G and an integral basis for L are known.
Using the action of the Galois group of a normal extension of number fields, we generalize and symmetrize various fundamental statements in algebra and algebraic number theory concerning splitting types of prime ideals, factorization types of polynomials modulo primes, and cycle types of the Galois groups of polynomials. One remarkable example is the removal of all artificial constraints from the Kummer-Dedekind Theorem that relates splitting and factorization patterns. Finally, we present an elementary proof that the discriminant of the splitting field of a monic irreducible polynomial with i…
Explicit descriptions of local integral Galois module generators in certain extensions of $p$-adic fields due to Pickett have recently been used to make progress with open questions on integral Galois module structure in wildly ramified extensions of number fields. In parallel, Pulita has generalised the theory of Dwork's power series to a set of power series with coefficients in Lubin-Tate extensions of $\Q_p$ to establish a structure theorem for rank one solvable p-adic differential equations. In this paper we first generalise Pulita's power series using the theories of formal group exponent…
The V_4-lines for each linearly normal space elliptic curve form the edges of a tetrahedron, however in case the elliptic curve has j=12^3, there exist Z_4-lines in addition. We show the arrangement of V_4 and Z_4-lines explicitly for the curve. As a corollary we obtain that each irreducible quartic curve with genus one has at most two Galois points.
Let $(\mathbb{T}_f,\mathfrak{m}_f)$ denote the mod $p$ local Hecke algebra attached to a normalised Hecke eigenform $f$, which is a commutative algebra over some finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of characteristic $p$ and with residue field $\mathbb{F}_q$. By a result of Carayol we know that, if the residual Galois representation $\overlineρ_f:G_\mathbb{Q}\rightarrow\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ is absolutely irreducible, then one can attach to this algebra a Galois representation $ρ_f:G_\mathbb{Q}\rightarrow\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{T}_f)$ that is a lift of $\overlineρ_f$. We will show how one can deter…
For a list $\cal{L}$ of finite groups and for a profinite group $G$, we consider the intersection $T(G)$ of all open normal subgroups $N$ of $G$ with $G/N$ in $\cal{L}$. We give a cohomological characterization of the epimorphisms $π\colon S\to G$ of profinite groups (satisfying some additional requirements) such that $π[T(S)]=T(G)$. For $p$ prime, this is used to describe cohomologically the profinite groups $G$ whose $n$th term $G_{(n,p)}$ (resp., $G^{(n,p)}$) in the $p$-Zassenhaus filtration (resp., lower $p$-central filtration) is an intersection of this form. When $G=G_F$ is the absolute …
A semicommutative finite group scheme is a finite group scheme which can be obtained from commutative finite group schemes by iterated performing semidirect products with commutative kernels and taking quotients by normal subgroups. In this article, for an étale tame semicommutative finite group scheme $G$, we give a lower bound on the number of connected $G$-torsors of bounded height (such as discriminant).
We establish new conditions that prevent the existence of (weak) normal integral bases in tame Galois extensions of number fields. This leads to the following result: under appropriate technical hypotheses, the existence of a normal integral basis in the upper layer of an abelian tower Q \subset K \subset L forces the tower to be split in a very strong sense.
Let $p\geq 5$ be a prime number, $\mathbb{F}$ a finite field of characteristic $p$ and let $\barχ$ be the mod-$p$ cyclotomic character. Let $\barρ:\operatorname{G}_{\mathbb{Q}}\rightarrow \operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{F})$ be a Galois representation such that the local representation $\barρ_{\restriction \operatorname{G}_{\mathbb{Q}_p}}$ is flat and irreducible. Further, assume that $\operatorname{det}\barρ=\barχ$. The celebrated theorem of Khare and Wintenberger asserts that if $\barρ$ satisfies some natural conditions, there exists a normalized Hecke-eigencuspform $f=\sum_{n\geq 1} a_n q^n$ an…
We provide a concrete example of a normal basis for a finite Galois extension which is not abelian. More precisely, let $\mathbb{C}(X(N))$ be the field of meromorphic functions on the modular curve $X(N)$ of level $N$. We construct a completely free element in the extension $\mathbb{C}(X(N))/\mathbb{C}(X(1))$ by means of Siegel functions.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number and $F$ a field containing a primitive $p$th root of unity. We prove a new restriction on the group-theoretic structure of the absolute Galois group $G_F$ of $F$. Namely, the third subgroup $G_F^{(3)}$ in the descending $p$-central sequence of $G_F$ is the intersection of all open normal subgroups $N$ such that $G_F/N$ is 1, $\mathbb{Z}/p^2$, or the modular group $M_{p^3}$ of order $p^3$.
A number field $K$ is Hilbert-Speiser if all of its tame abelian extensions $L/K$ admit NIB (normal integral basis). It is known that $\mathbb{Q}$ is the only such field, but when we restrict $\text{Gal}(L/K)$ to be a given group $G$, the classification of $G$-Hilbert-Speiser fields is far from complete. In this paper, we present new results on so-called $G$-Leopoldt fields. In their definition, NIB is replaced by ``weak NIB'' (defined below). Most of our results are negative, in the sense that they strongly limit the class of $G$-Leopoldt fields for some particular groups $G$, sometimes even …
Let $p$ be a prime. A pro-$p$ group $G$ is said to be 1-smooth if it can be endowed with a continuous representation $θ\colon G\to\mathrm{GL}_1(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ such that every open subgroup $H$ of $G$, together with the restriction $θ\vert_H$, satisfies a formal version of Hilbert 90. We prove that every 1-smooth pro-$p$ group contains a unique maximal closed abelian normal subgroup, in analogy with a result by Engler and Koenigsmann on maximal pro-$p$ Galois groups of fields, and that if a 1-smooth pro-$p$ group is solvable, then it is locally uniformly powerful, in analogy with a result by Wa…
The smallest non-abelian p-groups play a fundamental role in the theory of Galois p-extensions. We illustrate this by highlighting their role in the definition of the norm residue map in Galois cohomology. We then determine how often these groups --- as well as other closely related, larger p-groups --- occur as Galois groups over given base fields. We show further how the appearance of some Galois groups forces the appearance of other Galois groups in an interesting way.
Let $L$ be a Galois algebra with Galois group $G$ and let $x$ be a normal element of $L$. The moduli space $\mathcal X$ of pairs $(L,x)$ is isomorphic to an open subset of the quotient variety $\mathbb P/G$, where $\mathbb P$ is the projective space of the regular representation of $G$. We provide a formula for the height of any pair $(L,x) \in \mathcal X(\mathbb Q)$ in terms of algebraic invariants of $L$ and $x$ with respect to a natural adelic metric on the anticanonical divisor of $\mathbb P/G$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective connected curve of genus $g\ge 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic $p>0$. Let $G$ be a finite group, $P$ a Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ and $N_G(P)$ its normalizer in $G$. We show that if there exists an étale Galois cover $Y\to X$ with group $N_G(P)$, then $G$ is the Galois group wan étale Galois cover $\mathcal{Y}\to\mathcal{X}$, where the genus of $\mathcal{X}$ depends on the order of $G$, the number of Sylow $p$-subgroups of $G$ and $g$. Suppose that $G$ is an extension of a group $H$ of order prime to $p$ by a $p$-group $P$ and $…
Given a field $k$ and a finite group $G$, the Beckmann--Black problem asks whether every Galois field extension $F/k$ with group $G$ is the specialization at some $t_0 \in k$ of some Galois field extension $E/k(T)$ with group $G$ and $E \cap \overline{k} = k$. We show that the answer is positive for arbitrary $k$ and $G$, if one waives the requirement that $E/k(T)$ is normal. In fact, our result holds if ${\rm{Gal}}(F/k)$ is any given subgroup $H$ of $G$ and, in the special case $H=G$, we provide a similar conclusion even if $F/k$ is not normal. We next derive that, given a division ring $H$ a…
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois extension of $p$-adic fields with group $G$. It is well-known that $\mathcal{O}_L$ contains a free $\mathcal{O}_K[G]$-submodule of finite index. We study the minimal index of such a free submodule, and determine it exactly in several cases, including for any cyclic extension of degree $p$ of $p$-adic fields.
