We define a variant of normal basis, called a {\em Galois scaffolding}, that allows for an easy determination of valuation, and has implications for Galois module structure. We identify fully ramified, elementary abelian extensions of local function fields of characteristic $p$, called {\em one-dimensional}, that, in a particular sense, are as simple as cyclic degree $p$ extensions, and prove the statement in the title above.
This paper justifies an assertion in (Elder, Proc AMS 137 (2009), no 4, 1193--1203) that Galois scaffolds make the questions of Galois module structure tractable. Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p$ and let $K=k((T))$. For the class of characteristic $p$ elementary abelian $p$-extensions $L/K$ with Galois scaffolds described in mentioned paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the valuation ring $\mathfrak{O}_L$ to be free over its associated order $\mathcal{A}_{L/K}$ in $K[\Gal(L/K)]$. Interestingly, this condition agrees with the condition found by Y. Miyata, con…
In this paper we use the Galois module structure for the classical parameterizing spaces for elementary p-abelian extensions of a field K to give necessary and sufficient conditions for the solvability of any embedding problem which is an extension of Z/p^nZ with elementary p-abelian kernel. This allows us to count the total number of solutions to a given embedding problem when the appropriate modules are finite, and leads to some nontrivial automatic realization and realization multiplicity results for Galois groups.
Let p be a prime and F(p) the maximal p-extension of a field F containing a primitive p-th root of unity. We give a new characterization of Demuskin groups among Galois groups Gal(F(p)/F) when p=2, and, assuming the Elementary Type Conjecture, when p>2 as well. This characterization is in terms of the structure, as Galois modules, of the Galois cohomology of index p subgroups of Gal(F(p)/F).
We determine the Galois module structure of the parameterizing space of elementary $p$-abelian extensions of a field $K$ when $\text{Gal}(K/F)$ is any finite $p$-group, under the assumption that the maximal pro-$p$ quotient of the absolute Galois group of $F$ is a free, finitely generated pro-$p$ group, and that $F$ contains a primitive $p$th root of unity if $\text{char}(F) \neq p$.
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois, totally ramified $p$-extension of complete local fields with perfect residue fields of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper, we give conditions, valid for any Galois $p$-group $G={Gal}(L/K)$ (abelian or not) and for $K$ of either possible characteristic (0 or $p$), that are sufficient for the existence of a Galois scaffold. The existence of a Galois scaffold makes it possible to address questions of integral Galois module structure, which is done in a separate paper. But since our conditions can be difficult to check, we specialize to elementary abelian extensions …
We present several constraints on the absolute Galois groups G_F of fields F containing a primitive pth root of unity, using restrictions on the cohomology of index p normal subgroups from a previous paper by three of the authors. We first classify all maximal p-elementary abelian-by-order p quotients of such G_F. In the case p>2, each such quotient contains a unique closed index p elementary abelian subgroup. This seems to be the first case in which one can completely classify nontrivial quotients of absolute Galois groups by characteristic subgroups of normal subgroups. We then derive analog…

In this paper we interpret the solutions to a particular Galois embedding problem over an extension K/F whose Galois group is a finite, cyclic p group in terms of certain Galois submodules within the parameterizing space of elementary p-abelian extensions of K; here p is a prime. Combined with some basic facts about the module structure of this parameterizing space, this allows us to exhibit a class of p-groups whose realization multiplicity is unbounded.
We give an account of the theory of dessins d'enfants which is both elementary and self-contained. We describe the equivalence of many categories (graphs embedded nicely on surfaces, finite sets with certain permutations, certain field extensions, and some classes of algebraic curves), some of which are naturally endowed with an action of the absolute Galois group of the rational field. We prove that the action is faithful. Eventually we prove that this absolute Galois group embeds into the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group $GT_0$ introduced by Drinfel'd. There are explicit approximations of $GT_…
Let $p$ be a prime number and let ${K}$ be a field containing a root of 1 of order $p$. If the absolute Galois group $G_{K}$ satisfies $\dim H^1(G_{K},\mathbb{F}_p)<\infty$ and $\dim H^2(G_{K},\mathbb{F}_p)=1$, we show that L.~Positselski's and T.~Weigel's Koszulity conjectures are true for ${K}$. Also, under the above hypothesis we show that the $\mathbb{F}_p$-cohomology algebra of $G_{K}$ is the quadratic dual of the graded algebra $\mathrm{gr}_\bullet\mathbb{F}_p[G_{K}]$, induced by the powers of the augmentation ideal of the group algebra $\mathbb{F}_p[G_{K}]$, and these two algebras decom…
Using the action of the Galois group of a normal extension of number fields, we generalize and symmetrize various fundamental statements in algebra and algebraic number theory concerning splitting types of prime ideals, factorization types of polynomials modulo primes, and cycle types of the Galois groups of polynomials. One remarkable example is the removal of all artificial constraints from the Kummer-Dedekind Theorem that relates splitting and factorization patterns. Finally, we present an elementary proof that the discriminant of the splitting field of a monic irreducible polynomial with i…
Let K be a local field whose residue field is a finite field of characteristic p, and let L/K be a finite totally ramified Galois extension. Fried and Heiermann defined the "indices of inseparability" of L/K, a refinement of the ramification data of L/K. We give a method for computing the indices of inseparability of the extension L/K in terms of the norm group N_{L/K}(L^*) in the case where K has characteristic p and Gal(L/K) is an elementary abelian p-group with a single ramification break. In some cases our methods lead to simple formulas for the indices of inseparability.
The full automorphism group of a certain elementary abelian $p$-cover of the Hermitian curve in characteristic $p>0$ is determined. It is remarkable that the order of Sylow $p$-groups of the automorphism group is close to Nakajima's bound in terms of the $p$-rank. Weierstrass points, Galois points, Frobenius nonclassicality, and arc property are also investigated.
For a finite field $\mathbb{F}$, it is a basic result of Galois theory that the fixed field $E$ of $\text{Aut}(\mathbb{F}(x)/\mathbb{F})$ is a proper extension of $\mathbb{F}$. In this expository paper we construct, for all finite fields, an element $f\in \mathbb{F}(x)$ such that $E = \mathbb{F}(f)$. This element is shown to be easily computable in all cases using a simple formula. The approach is entirely elementary, and aimed at the student level; only a basic familiarity with Galois theory and field extensions is assumed.
Ramification invariants are necessary, but not in general sufficient, to determine the Galois module structure of ideals in local number field extensions. This insufficiency is associated with elementary abelian extensions, where one can define a refined ramification filtration -- one with more ramification breaks [JNTB 17 (2005)]. The first refined break number comes from the usual ramification filtration and is therefore necessary. Here we study the second refined break number.
We prove the "divisible case" of the Milnor-Bloch-Kato conjecture (which is the first step of Voevodsky's proof of this conjecture for arbitrary prime l) in a rather clear and elementary way. Assuming this conjecture, we construct a 6-term exact sequence of Galois cohomology with cyclotomic coefficients for any finite extension of fields whose Galois group has an exact quadruple of permutational representations over it. Examples include cyclic groups, dihedral groups, the biquadratic group Z/2\times Z/2, and the symmetric group S_4. Several exact sequences conjectured by Bloch-Kato, Merkurjev-…
The theory of p-ramification, regarding the Galois group of the maximal pro-p-extension of a number field K, unramified outside p and $\infty$, is well known including numerical experiments with PARI/GP programs. The case of ``incomplete p-ramification'' (i.e., when the set S of ramified places is a strict subset of the set P of the p-places) is, on the contrary, mostly unknown in a theoretical point of view. We give, in a first part, a way to compute, for any S $\le$ P, the structure of the Galois group of the maximal S-ramified abelian pro-p-extension H\_(K,S) of any field K given by means o…
For a smooth and geometrically irreducible variety X over a field k, the quotient of the absolute Galois group G_{k(X)} by the commutator subgroup of G_{\bar k(X)} projects onto G_k. We investigate the sections of this projection. We show that such sections correspond to "infinite divisions" of the elementary obstruction of Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc. If k is a number field and the Tate-Shafarevich group of the Picard variety of X is finite, then such sections exist if and only if the elementary obstruction vanishes. For curves this condition also amounts to the existence of divisors of degree…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $0$, and let $α_{1}$, $α_{2}$, ..., $α_{5}$ be algebraically independent and transcendental over $k$. Let $K$ be the transcendental extension of $k$ obtained by adjoining the elementary symmetric functions of the $α_{i}$'s. Let $J$ be the Jacobian of the hyperelliptic curve defined over $K$ which is given by the equation $y^{2} = \prod_{i = 1}^{5} (x - α_{i})$. We define a tower of field extensions $K = K_{0}' \subset K_{1}' \subset K_{2}' \subset ...$ by giving recursive formulas for the generators of each $K_{n}'$ over $K_{n - 1}'$, and let $K_{\infty}' =…
