This paper justifies an assertion in
(Elder, Proc AMS 137 (2009), no 4, 1193--1203) that Galois scaffolds make the questions of Galois module structure tractable. Let $k$ be a perfect field of characteristic $p$ and let $K=k((T))$. For the class of characteristic $p$ elementary abelian $p$-extensions $L/K$ with Galois scaffolds described in mentioned paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the valuation ring $\mathfrak{O}_L$ to be free over its associated order $\mathcal{A}_{L/K}$ in $K[\Gal(L/K)]$. Interestingly, this condition agrees with the condition found by Y. Miyata, concerning a class of cyclic Kummer extensions in characteristic zero.
Let $K$ be a local field and let $L/K$ be a totally ramified Galois extension of degree $p^n$. Being semistable and possessing a Galois scaffold are two conditions which facilitate the computation of the additive Galois module structure of $L/K$. In this note we show that $L/K$ is semistable if and only if $L/K$ has a Galois scaffold. We also give sufficient conditions in terms of Galois scaffolds for the extension $L/K$ to be stable.
Recently, much work has been done to investigate Galois module structure of local field extensions, particularly through the use of Galois scaffolds. Given a totally ramified $p$-extension of local fields $L/K$, a Galois Scaffold gives us a $K$-basis for $K[G]$ whose effect on the valuation of elements of $L$ is easy to determine. In 2013, N.P. Byott and G.G. Elder gave sufficient conditions for the existence of Galois scaffolds for cyclic extensions of degree $p^2$ in characteristic $p$. We take their work and adapt it to cyclic extensions of degree $p^2$ in characteristic $0$.
Let $K$ be a local field of characteristic $p$ and let $L/K$ be a totally ramified Galois extension such that Gal$(L/K)\cong C_{p^n}$. In this paper we find sufficient conditions for $L/K$ to admit a Galois scaffold. This leads to sufficient conditions for the ring of integers $O_L$ to be free of rank 1 over its associated order $A_0$, and to stricter conditions which imply that $A_0$ is a Hopf order in the group ring $K[C_{p^n}]$.
Let $L/K$ be a finite Galois, totally ramified $p$-extension of complete local fields with perfect residue fields of characteristic $p>0$. In this paper, we give conditions, valid for any Galois $p$-group $G={Gal}(L/K)$ (abelian or not) and for $K$ of either possible characteristic (0 or $p$), that are sufficient for the existence of a Galois scaffold. The existence of a Galois scaffold makes it possible to address questions of integral Galois module structure, which is done in a separate paper. But since our conditions can be difficult to check, we specialize to elementary abelian extensions …
Let $L/K$ be a finite, totally ramified $p$-extension of complete local fields with residue fields of characteristic $p > 0$, and let $A$ be a $K$-algebra acting on $L$. We define the concept of an $A$-scaffold on $L$, thereby extending and refining the notion of a Galois scaffold considered in several previous papers, where $L/K$ was Galois and $A=K[G]$ for $G=\mathrm{Gal}(L/K)$. When a suitable $A$-scaffold exists, we show how to answer questions generalizing those of classical integral Galois module theory. We give a necessary and sufficient condition, involving only numerical parameters, f…
We determine the Galois module structure of the parameterizing space of elementary $p$-abelian extensions of a field $K$ when $\text{Gal}(K/F)$ is any finite $p$-group, under the assumption that the maximal pro-$p$ quotient of the absolute Galois group of $F$ is a free, finitely generated pro-$p$ group, and that $F$ contains a primitive $p$th root of unity if $\text{char}(F) \neq p$.
An elementary approach to dessins d'enfants and the Grothendieck-Teichmüller group
Let $p$ be a prime number and let ${K}$ be a field containing a root of 1 of order $p$. If the absolute Galois group $G_{K}$ satisfies $\dim H^1(G_{K},\mathbb{F}_p)<\infty$ and $\dim H^2(G_{K},\mathbb{F}_p)=1$, we show that L.~Positselski's and T.~Weigel's Koszulity conjectures are true for ${K}$. Also, under the above hypothesis we show that the $\mathbb{F}_p$-cohomology algebra of $G_{K}$ is the quadratic dual of the graded algebra $\mathrm{gr}_\bullet\mathbb{F}_p[G_{K}]$, induced by the powers of the augmentation ideal of the group algebra $\mathbb{F}_p[G_{K}]$, and these two algebras decom…
For a finite field $\mathbb{F}$, it is a basic result of Galois theory that the fixed field $E$ of $\text{Aut}(\mathbb{F}(x)/\mathbb{F})$ is a proper extension of $\mathbb{F}$. In this expository paper we construct, for all finite fields, an element $f\in \mathbb{F}(x)$ such that $E = \mathbb{F}(f)$. This element is shown to be easily computable in all cases using a simple formula. The approach is entirely elementary, and aimed at the student level; only a basic familiarity with Galois theory and field extensions is assumed.
The power classes of a field are well-known for their ability to parameterize elementary $p$-abelian Galois extensions. These classical objects have recently been reexamined through the lens of their Galois module structure. Module decompositions have been computed in several cases, providing deep new insight into absolute Galois groups. The surprising result in each case is that there are far fewer isomorphism types of indecomposables than one would expect generically, with summands predominately free over associated quotient rings. Though non-free summands are the exception both in their for…
The full automorphism group of a certain elementary abelian $p$-cover of the Hermitian curve in characteristic $p>0$ is determined. It is remarkable that the order of Sylow $p$-groups of the automorphism group is close to Nakajima's bound in terms of the $p$-rank. Weierstrass points, Galois points, Frobenius nonclassicality, and arc property are also investigated.
Let $p$ be a prime number and $c, d$ natural numbers. Up to isomorphism, there is a unique $p$-group $G^c_d$ of least order with rank $d$ and nilpotency class $c$ named disposition group. This group plays an important role in the construction of Galois extensions over number fields with given $p$-group as Galois group. Also, it has a central series with all factors being elementary. Since $G^c_1$ is abelian we consider $d\geq 2$. In this article, first, we determine the order of all its subgroups of lower central series and $n$-th center subgroups of $G^c_d$, $(n\in\mathbb N)$. Then we deduce …
The theory of p-ramification, regarding the Galois group of the maximal pro-p-extension of a number field K, unramified outside p and $\infty$, is well known including numerical experiments with PARI/GP programs. The case of ``incomplete p-ramification'' (i.e., when the set S of ramified places is a strict subset of the set P of the p-places) is, on the contrary, mostly unknown in a theoretical point of view. We give, in a first part, a way to compute, for any S $\le$ P, the structure of the Galois group of the maximal S-ramified abelian pro-p-extension H\_(K,S) of any field K given by means o…
Let zeta5 be a primitive fifth root of unity and d<>1 be a quadratic fundamental discriminant not divisible by 5. For the 5-dual cyclic quartic field M=Q((zeta5-zeta5^-1)*d^1/2) of the quadratic fields k1=Q(d^1/2) and k2=Q((5*d)^1/2) in the sense of the quintic reflection theorem, the possibilities for the isomophism type of the Galois group G(5,2)M=Gal(M(5,2)/M) of the second Hilbert 5-class field M(5,2) of M are investigated, when the 5-class group Cl5(M) is elementary bicyclic of rank two. Usually, the maximal unramified pro-5-extension M(5,infinity) of M coincides with M(5,2) already. The …
