A conjecture of Kato says that the monodromy operator on the cohomology of a semi-stable degeneration of projective varieties is represented by an algebraic cycle on the special fiber of a normal crossing model of the fiber product degeneration. We prove this conjecture in the simple case of a semi-stable degeneration arising from a Lefschetz fibration.
We give a short proof of a Grothendieck-Lefschetz Theorem for equivariant Picard groups of nonsingular varieties with the action of an affine algebraic group.
We propose a strengthening of the Grothendieck--Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for the local Picard group, prove some special cases and derive several consequences to the deformation theory of log canonical singularities. Version 2: Main conjecture changed, following recent results of Bhatt and de Jong. Small changes to the proofs.
The monodromy action in the homology (generally with twisted coefficients) of complements of stratified complex analytic varieties depending on parameters is studied. For a wide class of local degenerations of such families (stratified Morse singularities) local monodromy and variation operators are reduced to similar operators acting in the transversal slices of corresponding strata. In particular, these results imply a main part of F. Pham's generalized Picard--Lefschetz formulae.
We prove a strengthening of the Grothendieck-Lefschetz hyperplane theorem for local Picard groups conjectured by Kollár. Our approach, which relies on acyclicity results for absolute integral closures, also leads to a restriction theorem for higher rank bundles on projective varieties in positive characteristic.
We prove a type of the Lefschetz hyperplane section theorem on Q-Fano 3-folds with Picard number one and $1/2(1,1,1)$-singularities by using some degeneration method. As a byproduct, we obtain a new example of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold $X$ with Picard number one whose invariants are $$(H_X^3, c_2 (X) \cdot H_X, {e} (X)) = (8, 44, -88),$$ where $H_X$, $e(X)$ and $c_2(X)$ are an ample generator of $\Pic(X)$, the topological Euler characteristic number and the second Chern class of $X$ respectively.
We study the topology of the space of affine hyperplanes $L \subset \CC^n$ which are in general position with respect to a given generic quadratic hypersurface $A$, and calculate the monodromy action of the fundamental group of this space on the relative homology groups $H_*(\CC^n, A \cup L)$ associated with such hyperplanes.
Let X be a smooth, complex Fano 4-fold, and rho(X) its Picard number. If X contains a prime divisor D with rho(X)-rho(D)>2, then either X is a product of del Pezzo surfaces, or rho(X)=5 or 6. In this setting, we completely classify the case where rho(X)=5; there are 6 families, among which one is new. We also deduce the classification of Fano 4-folds with rho(X)>4 with an elementary divisorial contraction sending a divisor to a curve.
Let $f$ and $g$ be reduced homogeneous polynomials in separate sets of variables. We establish a simple formula that relates the eigenspace decomposition of the monodromy operator on the Milnor fiber cohomology of $fg$ to that of $f$ and $g$ separately. We use a relation between local systems and Milnor fiber cohomology that has been established by D. Cohen and A. Suciu.
We calculate the Picard group of generic (very general) spectral varieties living in the total space of a very ample line bundle over an algebraically closed field $k$ of odd characteristics or characteristic 0. We follow the strategy of Ravindra and Srinivas [RS06,RS09] via formal Picard groups. As an application, we calculate the generic fibers of Hitchin systems over a smooth quintic surface of Picard number 1.
The monodromy action in the homology of level sets of Morse functions on stratified singular analytic varieties is studied. The local variation operators in both the standard and the intersection homology groups defined by the loops around the critical values of such functions are reduced to similar operators in the homology groups of the transversal slices of the corresponding strata.
We show that Fano 4-folds with Picard number 5 have Lefschetz defect 3 if and only if they are toric of combinatorial type K. We also find a characterization for such varieties in terms of Picard number of prime divisors. Moreover, we discuss classification results for 4-dimensional complex smooth projective varieties admitting some particular fiber type contractions.
We discuss the Picard group of moduli space $\mathcal{K}_g$ of quasi-polarized K3 surfaces of genus $g\leq 12$ and $g\neq 11$. In this range, $\mathcal{K}_g$ is unirational and a general element in $\mathcal{K}_g$ is a complete intersection with respect to a vector bundle on a homogenous space, by the work of Mukai. In this paper, we find generators of the Picard group $Pic_\mathbb{Q}(\mathcal{K}_g)$ using Noether-Lefschetz theory. This verifies the Noether-Lefschetz conjecture on moduli of K3 surfaces in these cases.
New updated edition by Yves Laszlo of the book ``Cohomologie locale des faisceaux cohérents et théorèmes de Lefschetz locaux et globaux (SGA 2)'', Advanced Studies in Pure Mathematics 2, North-Holland Publishing Company - Amsterdam, 1968. Published by the Societe Mathematique de France http://smf.emath.fr/Publications/DocumentsMathematiques/ Original text also available in the LaTeX file. Dans cet ouvrage, on montre des théorèmes d'algébrisation et de pureté qui permettent d'obtenir des théorèmes de type Lefschetz pour le groupe fondamental ou de Picard. In this monograph algebraization and pu…
Noether-Lefschetz divisors in the moduli of K3 surfaces are the loci corresponding to Picard rank at least 2. We relate the degrees of the Noether-Lefschetz divisors in 1-parameter families of K3 surfaces to the Gromov-Witten theory of the 3-fold total space. The reduced K3 theory and the Yau-Zaslow formula play an important role. We use results of Borcherds and Kudla-Millson for O(2,19) lattices to determine the Noether-Lefschetz degrees in classical families of K3 surfaces of degrees 2, 4, 6 and 8. For the quartic K3 surfaces, the Noether-Lefschetz degrees are proven to be the Fourier coeffi…
This note is a short survey on the Lefschetz defect, an invariant of smooth Fano varieties that has been recently introduced; it is related to the Picard number rho(X) of X, and to the Picard number of prime divisors in X. We explain the definition of the Lefschetz defect delta(X) and its origin, the known results - mainly on the case delta(X)>1, and several examples, especially in dimensions 3 and 4. In particular, we explain how the results on the Lefschetz defect allow to recover the classification of Fano 3-folds with rho(X)>4, due to Mori and Mukai. We also review the known examples of Fa…
Let G be a reductive group and let Bun_G denote the moduli stack of G-bundles on a smooth projective curve. We begin the study of the singularities of a canonical compactification of Bun_G due to V. Drinfeld (unpublished), which we refer to as the Drinfeld-Lafforgue-Vinberg compactification. For G=GL_n certain smooth open substacks of this compactification have already appeared in the work of Drinfeld and of L. Lafforgue on the Langlands correspondence for function fields. The Drinfeld-Lafforgue-Vinberg compactification is however already singular for G=SL_2; questions about its singularities …
The Noether-Lefschetz theorem asserts that any curve in a very general surface $X$ in $\mathbb P^3$ of degree $d \geq 4$ is a restriction of a surface in the ambient space, that is, the Picard number of $X$ is $1$. We proved previously that under some conditions, which replace the condition $d \geq 4$, a very general surface in a simplicial toric threefold $\mathbb P_Σ$ (with orbifold singularities) has the same Picard number as $\mathbb P_Σ$. Here we define the Noether-Lefschetz loci of quasi-smooth surfaces in $\mathbb P_Σ$ in a linear system of a Cartier ample divisor with respect to a (-1)…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over a field of characteristic $0$ and $L$ an ample divisor. In this paper we study the Weak Lefschetz conjecture for Chow groups using the technique employed by Grothendieck in his study of the problem for Picard groups, and using Bloch's formula to interpret Chow groups in terms of Milnor $K$- theory we prove the infinitesimal part of the conjecture.
The paper continues the discussion of symplectic aspects of Picard-Lefschetz theory begun in "Vanishing cycles and mutation" (this archive). There we explained how to associate to a suitable fibration over a two-dimensional disc a triangulated category, the "derived directed Fukaya category" which describes the structure of the vanishing cycles. The present second part serves two purposes. Firstly, it contains various kinds of algebro-geometric examples, including the "mirror manifold" of the projective plane. Secondly there is a (largely conjectural) discussion of more advanced topics, such a…
We prove that the derived Fukaya category of the Lefschetz fibration defined by a Brieskorn-Pham polynomial is equivalent to the triangulated category of singularities associated with the same polynomial together with a grading by an abelian group of rank one. Symplectic Picard-Lefschetz theory developed by Seidel is an essential ingredient of the proof.
We prove Lefschetz type theorems for cohomology groups and Picard groups of degeneracy loci for vector bundle maps. We also treat the case of antisymmetric maps.
Let X be a smooth, complex Fano variety, and delta(X) its Lefschetz defect. It is known that if delta(X) is at least 4, then X is isomorphic to a product SxT, where dim T=dim X-2. In this paper we prove a structure theorem for the case where delta(X)=3. We show that there exists a smooth Fano variety T with dim T=dim X-2 such that X is obtained from T with two possible explicit constructions; in both cases there is a P^2-bundle Z over T such that X is the blow-up of Z along three pairwise disjoint smooth, irreducible, codimension 2 subvarieties. Then we apply the structure theorem to Fano 4-fo…
We study the moduli space F_{2d} of polarised K3 surfaces of degree 2d. We compute all relations between Noether-Lefschetz divisors on these moduli spaces for d up to around 50. This leads to a very concrete description of the rational Picard group of F_{2d}. We show how to determine the coefficients of boundary components of relations in the rational Picard group, giving relations on a (toroidal) compactification of F_{2d}. We draw conclusions from this about the Kodaira dimension of F_{2d}, in many cases confirming earlier results by Gritsenko, Hulek and Sankaran, and in two cases giving a n…
In this survey article we present connections between Picard--Lefschetz invariants of isolated hypersurface singularities and Blanchfield forms for links. We emphasize the unifying role of Hermitian Variation Structures introduced by Némethi.
We use Picard-Lefschetz theory to prove a new formula for intersection numbers of twisted cocycles associated to a given arrangement of hyperplanes. In a special case when this arrangement produces the moduli space of punctured Riemann spheres, intersection numbers become tree-level scattering amplitudes of quantum field theories in the Cachazo-He-Yuan formulation.
A now classical construction due to Kato and Nakayama attaches a topological space (the "Betti realization") to a log scheme over $\mathbf{C}$. We show that in the case of a log smooth degeneration over the standard log disc, this construction allows one to recover the topology of the germ of the family from the log special fiber alone. We go on to give combinatorial formulas for the monodromy and the $d^2$ differentials acting on the nearby cycle complex in terms of the log structures. We also provide variants of these results for the Kummer etale topology. In the case of curves, these data a…
We compute the monodromy of the Hitchin fibration for the moduli space of $L$-twisted $SL(n,\mathbb{C})$ and $GL(n,\mathbb{C})$-Higgs bundles for any $n$, on a compact Riemann surface of genus $g>1$. We require the line bundle $L$ to either be the canonical bundle or satisfy $deg(L) > 2g-2$. The monodromy group is generated by Picard-Lefschetz transformations associated to vanishing cycles of singular spectral curves. We construct such vanishing cycles explicitly and use this to show that the $SL(n,\mathbb{C})$ monodromy group is a {\em skew-symmetric vanishing lattice} in the sense of Janssen…
