For a smooth geometrically integral variety $X$ over a field $k$ of characteristic 0, we introduce and investigate the extended Picard complex $UPic(X)$. It is a certain complex of Galois modules of length 2, whose zeroth cohomology is $\bar{k}[X]^*/ \bar{k}^*$ and whose first cohomology is $Pic(\bar{X})$, where $\bar{k}$ is a fixed algebraic closure of $k$ and $\bar{X}$ is obtained from $X$ by extension of scalars to $\bar{k}$. When $X$ is a $k$-torsor of a connected linear $k$-group $G$, we compute $UPic(X)=UPic(G)$ (in the derived category) in terms of the algebraic fundamental group $π_1(G)$. As an application we compute the elementary obstruction for such $X$.
We define a tricategory T of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves, whose hom-bigroupoids consist of weak morphisms of such complexes. We also define a 3-category 2PIC(S) of Picard 2-stacks, whose hom-2-groupoids consist of additive 2-functors. We prove that these categories are triequivalent as tricategories. As a consequence we obtain a generalization of Deligne's analogous result about Picard stacks in SGA4, Exp. XVIII.
The aim of this paper is to define and study the 3-category of extensions of Picard 2-stacks over a site S and to furnish a geometrical description of the cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves. More precisely, our main Theorem furnishes (1) a parametrization of the equivalence classes of objects, 1-arrows, 2-arrows, and 3-arrows of the 3-category of extensions of Picard 2-stacks by the cohomology groups Ext^i, and (2) a geometrical description of the cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves via extensions of Picard 2-stacks. To this end, we us…
Let k be a field of characteristic 0 and let X be a smooth geometrically integral k-variety. In our previous paper we defined the extended Picard complex UPic(X) as a certain complex of Galois modules in degrees 0 and 1. We computed the isomorphism class of UPic(G) in the derived category of Galois modules for a connected linear k-group G. In this paper we assume that X is a homogeneous space of a connected linear k-group G with geometric stabilizer H. We compute the isomorphism class of UPic(X) in the derived category of Galois modules in terms of the character groups of G and H. The proof is…
We prove that a differential field K is algebraically closed and Picard-Vessiot closed if and only if the differential Galois cohomology group H^1_\partial(K,G) is trivial for any linear differential algebraic group G over K. We give an application to the parameterized Picard-Vessiot theory.
We show that every connected commutative algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 is the Picard variety of some projective variety, obtained by pinching a smooth variety along a finite subscheme. In contrast, no Witt group of dimension at least 3 over a perfect field of prime characteristic is isogenous to the Picard variety obtained by this construction.
Let X be a smooth projective variety with torsion-free Picard group. We introduce complexes of vector spaces whose homology determines the structure of the minimal free resolution of the Cox ring of X over the polynomial ring and show how the homology of these complexes can be studied by purely geometric methods. As an application of these techniques we give a simple new proof of a characterization of the Cox rings of Del Pezzo surfaces (of degree >1) conjectured by Batyrev and Popov.
We prove that the Picard group of a connected affine algebraic group $G$ is isomorphic to the fundamental group of the derived subgroup of the reductive algebraic group $G/{\mathscr R}_u(G)$, where ${\mathscr R}_u(G)$ is the unipotent radical of $G$.
We prove that an algebraic group over a field $k$is affine precisely when its Picard group is torsion, and show that in this case the Picard group is finite when $k$ is perfect, and the product of a finite group of order prime to $p$ and a $p$-primary group of finite exponent when $k$ is imperfect of characteristic $p$.
We prove some finiteness theorems for the Picard functor of an algebraic stack, in the spirit of SGA 6, exp. XII and XIII. In particular, we give a stacky version of Raynaud's relative representability theorem, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of the torsion component of the Picard functor, and for the finite generation of the Neron-Severi groups or of the Picard group itself. We give some examples and applications. In an appendix, we prove the semicontinuity theorem for a (non necessarily tame) algebraic stack.
Illusie has suggested that one should think of the classifying group of $M_X^{gp}$-torsors on a logarithmically smooth curve $X$ over a standard logarithmic point as a logarithmic analogue of the Picard group of $X$. This logarithmic Picard group arises naturally as a quotient of the algebraic Picard group by lifts of the chip firing relations of the associated dual graph. We connect this perspective to Baker and Norine's theory of ranks of divisors on a finite graph, and to Amini and Baker's metrized complexes of curves. Moreover, we propose a definition of a combinatorial rank for line bundl…
A projective manifold is algebraically hyperbolic if the degree of any curve is bounded from above by its genus times a constant, which is independent from the curve. This is a property which follows from Kobayashi hyperbolicity. We prove that hyperkahler manifolds are non algebraically hyperbolic when the Picard rank is at least 3, or if the Picard rank is 2 and the SYZ conjecture on existence of Lagrangian fibrations is true. We also prove that if the automorphism group of a hyperkahler manifold is infinite then it is algebraically non-hyperbolic.
Let S be a locally noetherian regular scheme. We compute the units-Picard complex of a reductive S-group scheme G in terms of the dual algebraic fundamental complex of G. To do so, we establish a units-Picard-Brauer exact sequence for a torsor under a smooth S-group scheme.
We define Albanese and Picard 1-motives of smooth (simplicial) schemes over a perfect field. For smooth proper schemes, these are the classical Albanese and Picard varieties. For a curve, these are t he homological 1-motive of Lichtenbaum and the motivic $H^1$ of Deligne. This paper proves a conjecture of Deligne about providing an algebraic description, via 1-motives, of the first homology and cohomology groups of a complex algebraic variety. (L. Barbieri-Viale and V. Srinivas have also proved this independently.) It also contains a purely algebraic proof of Lichtenbaum's conjecture that the …
In this article we study the Picard functor and the Picard stack of an algebraic stack. We give a new and direct proof of the representability of the Picard stack. We prove that it is quasi-separated, and that the connected component of the identity is proper when the fibers of the stack are geometrically normal. We study some examples of Picard functors of classical stacks. In an appendix, we review the lisse-etale cohomology of abelian sheaves on an algebraic stack.
Let A be a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field K. The derived Picard group DPic(A) is the group of two-sided tilting complexes over A modulo isomorphism. We prove that DPic(A) is a locally algebraic group, and its identity component is Out^0(A). If B is a derived Morita equivalent algebra then DPic(A) is isomorphic to DPic(B) as locally algebraic groups. Our results extend, and our based on, work of Huisgen-Zimmermann, Saorin and Rouquier.
Let $X$ be the family of hypersurfaces in the odd-dimensional torus ${\mathbb T}^{2n+1}$ defined by a Laurent polynomial $f$ with fixed exponents and variable coefficients. We show that if $nΔ$, the dilation of the Newton polytope $Δ$ of $f$ by the factor $n$, contains no interior lattice points, then the Picard-Fuchs equation of $W_{2n}H^{2n}_{\rm DR}(X)$ has a full set of algebraic solutions (where $W_\bullet$ denotes the weight filtration on de Rham cohomology). We also describe a procedure for finding solutions of these Picard-Fuchs equations.
We define, in a purely algebraic way, 1-motives $Alb^{+}(X)$, $Alb^{-}(X)$, $Pic^{+}(X)$ and $Pic^{-}(X)$ associated with any algebraic scheme $X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For $X$ over $\C$ of dimension $n$ the Hodge realizations are, respectively, $H^{2n-1}(X)(n)$, $H_{1}(X)$, $H^{1}(X)(1)$ and $H_{2n-1}(X)(1-n)$.
We give a new practical method for computing subvarieties of projective hypersurfaces. By computing the periods of a given hypersurface X, we find algebraic cohomology cycles on X. On well picked algebraic cycles, we can then recover the equations of subvarieties of X that realize these cycles. In practice, a bulk of the computations involve transcendental numbers and have to be carried out with floating point numbers. However, if X is defined over algebraic numbers then the coefficients of the equations of subvarieties can be reconstructed as algebraic numbers. A symbolic computation then ver…
We construct the logarithmic and tropical Picard groups of a family of logarithmic curves and realize the latter as the quotient of the former by the algebraic Jacobian. We show that the logarithmic Jacobian is a proper family of logarithmic abelian varieties over the moduli space of Deligne-Mumford stable curves, but does not possess an underlying algebraic stack. However, the logarithmic Picard group does have logarithmic modifications that are representable by logarithmic schemes, all of which are obtained by pullback from subdivisions of the tropical Picard group.
We give a short proof of a Grothendieck-Lefschetz Theorem for equivariant Picard groups of nonsingular varieties with the action of an affine algebraic group.
Motivated by an application to LDPC (low density parity check) algebraic geometry codes described by Voloch and Zarzar, we describe a computational procedure for establishing an upper bound on the arithmetic or geometric Picard number of a smooth projective surface over a finite field, by computing the Frobenius action on p-adic cohomology to a small degree of p-adic accuracy. We have implemented this procedure in Magma; using this implementation, we exhibit several examples, such as smooth quartics over F_2 and F_3 with arithmetic Picard number 1, and a smooth quintic over F_2 with geometric …
In an earlier paper it was proved that if a differential field $(K,δ)$ is algebraically closed and closed under Picard-Vessiot extensions then every differential algebraic principal homogeneous space over K for a linear differential algebraic group G over K has a K-rational point (in fact if and only if). This paper explores whether and if so, how, this can be extended to (a) several derivations, (b) one automorphism. Under a natural notion of "generalized Picard-Vessiot extension" (in the case of several derivations), we give a counterexample. We also have a counterexample in the case of one …
For a linear differential equation defined over a formally real differential field K with real closed field of constants k, Crespo, Hajto and van der Put proved that there exists a unique formally real Picard- Vessiot extension up to K-differential automorphism. However such an equation may have Picard-Vessiot extensions which are not formally real fields. The differential Galois group of a Picard-Vessiot extension for this equation has the structure of a linear algebraic group defined over k and is a k-form of the differential Galois group H of the equation over the differential field K(i), w…
We study analogues of the usual Picard group for smooth analytic or non-singular algebraic varieties but instead of line bundles we study line bundles with a connection. We choose an approach which works for both cases.
This paper continues our previous work done in math.AG/0008207 and is an attempt to establish a conceptual framework which generalizes the work of Manin on the relation between non-linear second order ODEs of type Painleve VI and integrable systems. The principle behind everything is a strong interaction between K-theory and Picard-Fuchs type differential equations via Abel-Jacobi maps. Our main result is an extension of a theorem of Donagi and Markman to our setup.
We define and study the 2-category of torsors over a Picard groupoid, a central extension of a group by a Picard groupoid, and commutator maps in this central extension. Using it in the context of two-dimensional local fields and two-dimensional adelic theory we obtain the two-dimensional tame symbol and a new proof of Parshin reciprocity laws on an algebraic surface.
We show that the triviality of the differential Galois cohomologies over a partial differential field K of a linear differential algebraic group is equivalent to K being algebraically, Picard-Vessiot, and linearly differentially closed. This former is also known to be equivalent to the uniqueness up to an isomorphism of a Picard-Vessiot extension of a linear differential equation with parameters.
Let $X$ be a $\Q$-factorial complete toric variety over an algebraic closed field of characteristic $0$. There is a canonical injection of the Picard group ${\rm Pic}(X)$ in the group ${\rm Cl}(X)$ of classes of Weil divisors. These two groups are finitely generated abelian groups; whilst the first one is a free group, the second one may have torsion. We investigate algebraic and geometrical conditions under which the image of ${\rm Pic}(X)$ in ${\rm Cl}(X)$ is contained in a free part of the latter group.
For any smooth connected linear algebraic group G over an algebraically closed field k, we describe the Picard group of the universal moduli stack of principal G-bundles over pointed smooth k-projective curves.
We prove Grothendieck's existence theorem for relatively perfect complexes on an algebraic stack that is proper and flat over an $I$-adically complete Noetherian ring $A$. This generalizes an earlier result of Lieblich in the setting of algebraic spaces.
We study algebraic (Artin) stacks over $\bar{\mathcal M}_g$ giving a functorial way of compactifying the relative degree $d$ Picard variety for families of stable curves. We also describe for every $d$ the locus of genus $g$ stable curves over which we get Deligne-Mumford stacks strongly representable over $\bar{\mathcal M}_g$.
As a result of our study of the hyperbolicity of the moduli space of polarized manifold, we give a general big Picard theorem for a holomorphic curve on a log-smooth pair $(X,D)$ such that $W=X\setminus D$ admits a Finsler pseudometric that is strongly negatively curved when pulled back to the curve. We show, by some refinements of the classical Viehweg-Zuo construction, that this latter condition holds for the base space $W$, if nonsingular, of any algebraic family of polarized complex projective manifolds with semi-ample canonical bundles whose induced moduli map $ϕ$ to the moduli space of s…
The normal function associated to algebraic cycles in higher Chow groups defines a differential equation. This Picard-Fuchs equation defines an extension of $D$-modules as well as an extension of local systems. In this paper, we show that both extensions define the same extension of mixed Hodge modules determined by the normal function.
We prove that the Picard group of a regular simply connected variety over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic is finitely generated. The main difficulty to overcome is the unavailability of resolution of singularities. From this we deduce that in positive characteristic there exist no nontrivial stratified line bundles on such a variety, and we present a complex analog.
We investigate the smoothing problem of limit linear series of rank one on an enrichment of the notions of nodal curves and metrized complexes called saturated metrized complexes. We give a finitely verifiable full criterion for smoothability of a limit linear series of rank one on saturared metrized complexes, characterize the space of all such smoothings, and extend the criterion to metrized complexes. As applications, we prove that all limit linear series of rank one are smoothable on saturated metrized complexes corresponding to curves of compact-type, and prove an analogue for saturated m…
Beginning with the conjecture of Artin and Tate in 1966, there has been a series of successively more general conjectures expressing the special values of the zeta function of an algebraic variety over a finite field in terms of other invariants of the variety. In this article, we present the ultimate such conjecture, and provide evidence for it. In particular, we enhance Voevodsky's Z[1/p]-category of etale motivic complexes with a p-integral structure, and show that, for this category, our conjecture follows from the Tate and Beilinson conjectures. As the conjecture is stated in terms of mot…
In this note, we prove that the Q-Picard group of the moduli space of n-pointed stable curves of genus g over an algebraically closed field is generated by the tautological classes. We also prove that the cycle map to the 2nd etale cohomology group is bijective.
The Witt group of a smooth curve over a real closed field is explicitely calculated. The method uses a comparison theorem between the graded Witt group and the etale cohomology groups. In the second part of the paper, the torsion Picard group of a smooth real curve is also computed. The calculation depends on a new invariant introduced here. We prove that several problems of real algebraic geometry are related to this invariant.
In this paper we give a construction of algebraic (Artin) stacks endowed with a modular map onto the moduli stack of n-pointed stable curves of genus g, for g greater than 2. These stacks are smooth, irreducible and have dimension 4g-3+n, yielding a geometrically meaningful compactification of the degree d universal Picard stack over the moduli stack of smooth curves with marked points.
A metrized complex of algebraic curves is a finite metric graph together with a collection of marked complete nonsingular algebraic curves, one for each vertex, the marked points being in bijection with incident edges. We establish a Riemann-Roch theorem for metrized complexes of curves which generalizes both the classical Riemann-Roch theorem and its graph-theoretic and tropical analogues due to Baker-Norine, Gathmann-Kerber, and Mikhalkin-Zharkov. We also establish generalizations of the second author's specialization lemma and its weighted graph analogue due to Caporaso and the first author…
Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth projective curve of genus $g \geq 2$ over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $G$ be a connected reductive affine algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$. Let $\mathrm{M}_{G, {\rm Higgs}}^δ$ be the moduli space of semistable principal $G$--Higgs bundles on $X$ of topological type $δ\in π_1(G)$. In this article, we compute the fundamental group and Picard group of $\mathrm{M}_{G, {\rm Higgs}}^δ$.
We introduce the notion of mixed Hodge complex on an algebraic variety, improving Du Bois' filtered complex, and relate Deligne's theory of mixed Hodge structure with the theory of mixed Hodge module. This was supposed to be true, but is quite nontrivial, because the theory of mixed Hodge module does not work on a simplicial scheme. Some application to the Du Bois singularity is given.
This paper studies the function field of an algebraic curve over an arbitrary perfect field by using the Weil reciprocity law and topologies on the adele ring. A topological subgroup of the idele class group is introduced and it is shown how it encodes arithmetic properties of the base field and of the Picard group of the curve. These results are applied to study extensions of the function field.
In this article, we prove that any complex smooth rational surface $X$ which has no automorphism of positive entropy has a finite number of real forms (this is especially the case if $X$ cannot be obtained by blowing up $\mathbb P^2_{\mathbb C}$ at $r\geq 10$ points). In particular, we prove that the group $\mathrm{Aut}^{\#}X$ of complex automorphisms of $X$ which act trivially on the Picard group of $X$ is a linear algebraic group defined over $\mathbb R$.
We study the variation of relative cohomology for a pair consisting of a smooth projective hypersurface and an algebraic subvariety in it. We construct an inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equation by applying a Picard-Fuchs operator to the holomorphic top form on a toric Calabi-Yau hypersurface, and deriving a general formula for the $d$-exact form on one side of the equation. We also derive a double residue formula, giving a purely algebraic way to compute the inhomogeneous Picard-Fuchs equations for Abel-Jacobi map, which has played an important role in recent study of D-branes [25]. Using the var…
