We formulate a detailed conjectural Eichler-Shimura type formula for the cohomology of local systems on a Picard modular surface associated to the group of unitary similitudes $\mathrm{GU}(2,1,\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-3}))$. The formula is based on counting points over finite fields on curves of genus three which are cyclic triple covers of the projective line. Assuming the conjecture we are able to calculate traces of Hecke operators on spaces of Picard modular forms. We provide ample evidence for the conjectural formula.
Along the way we prove new results on characteristic polynomials of Frobenius acting on the first cohomology group of cyclic triple covers of any genus, dimension formulas for spaces of Picard modular forms and formulas for the numerical Euler characteristics of the local systems.
We study the reduction of Picard modular surfaces modulo an inert prime, mod p and p-adic modular forms. We construct a theta operator on such modular forms and study its poles and its effect on Fourier-Jacobi expansions.
We study variations of Hodge structures over a Picard modular surface, and compute the weights and types of their degenerations through the cusps of the Baily-Borel compactification. The main tool is a theorem of Burgos and Wildeshaus.
Motivated by an application to LDPC (low density parity check) algebraic geometry codes described by Voloch and Zarzar, we describe a computational procedure for establishing an upper bound on the arithmetic or geometric Picard number of a smooth projective surface over a finite field, by computing the Frobenius action on p-adic cohomology to a small degree of p-adic accuracy. We have implemented this procedure in Magma; using this implementation, we exhibit several examples, such as smooth quartics over F_2 and F_3 with arithmetic Picard number 1, and a smooth quintic over F_2 with geometric …
We construct generators for modules of vector-valued Picard modular forms on a unitary group of type (2,1) over the Eisenstein integers. We also calculate eigenvalues of Hecke operators acting on cusp forms.
We prove that a differential field K is algebraically closed and Picard-Vessiot closed if and only if the differential Galois cohomology group H^1_\partial(K,G) is trivial for any linear differential algebraic group G over K. We give an application to the parameterized Picard-Vessiot theory.
The paper investigates invariants of compactified Picard modular surfaces by principal congruence subgroups of Picard modular groups. The applications to the surface classification and modular forms are discussed.
We interpret Hochschild cohomology as the Lie algebra of the derived Picard group (in the sense of Rouquier-Zimmermann and Yekutieli) and deduce that it is preserved under derived equivalences.
Cohomology of a topological space with coefficients in stacks of abelian 2-groups is considered. A 2-categorical analog of the theorem of Grothendieck is proved, relating cohomology of the space with coefficients in a 2-stage spectrum and the Ext groups of appropriate stacks.
We investigate arithmetic aspects of the middle degree cohomology of compactified Picard modular surfaces $X$ attached to the unitary similitude group $\mathrm{GU}(2,1)$ for an imaginary quadratic extension $E/\mathbf{Q}$. We construct new Beilinson--Flach classes on $X$ and compute their Archimedean regulator. We obtain a special value formula involving a non-critical $L$-value of the degree six standard $L$-function, a Whittaker period, and the regulator. This provides evidence for Beilinson's conjecture in this setting.
We use the description of the Picard modular surface for discriminant $-3$ as a moduli space of curves of genus $3$ to generate all vector-valued Picard modular forms from bi-covariants for the action of ${GL}_2$ on the space of pairs of binary forms of bidegree $(4,1)$. The universal binary forms of degree $4$ and $1$ correspond to a meromorphic modular form of weight $(4,-2)$ and a holomorphic Eisenstein series of weight $(1,1)$.
Cléry and van der Geer determined generators for some modules of vector valued Picard modular forms on the two dimensional ball. In this paper we consider the case of a three dimensional ball with the action of the Picard modular group $Γ_3[\sqrt{-3}]$. The corresponding modular variety of dimension 3 is a copy of the Segre cubic.
It is known that the Picard group of a complex manifold can be expressed as a Deligne cohomology group. One may wonder if the same holds for the Picard group of a smooth algebraic variety and Deligne-Beilinson cohomology but this is not true, as already remarked by M. Saito. We explain how one has to modify the latter, show that the Picard group can be expressed by absolute Hodge cohomology, too, and introduce an intermediate object between Picard group and usual Deligne-Beilinson cohomology group. Similarly as in the case of Deligne cohomology one can relate line bundles with a regular connec…
The following conjecture arose out of discussions between B. Harbourne, J. Roé, C. Cilberto and R. Miranda: for a smooth projective surface $X$ there exists a positive constant $c_X$ such that $h^1(\mathcal O_X(C))\le c_X h^0(\mathcal O_X(C))$ for every prime divisor $C$ on $X$. When the Picard number $ρ(X)=2$, we prove that if either the Kodaira dimension $κ(X)=1$ and $X$ has a negative curve or $X$ has two negative curves, then this conjecture holds for $X$.
We study the geometry of a Picard modular fourfold which parametrizes abelian fourfolds of Weil type for the field of cube roots of unity. We find a projective model of this fourfold as a singular, degree ten, hypersurface X in projective 5-space. The Weyl group W(E_6) acts on X and we provide an explicit description of this action. Moreover, we describe various special subvarieties as well as the boundary of X.
Given a family of local systems on a punctured Riemann sphere, with moving singularities, its first parabolic cohomology is a local system on the base space. We study this situation from different points of view. For instance, we derive universal formulas for the monodromy of the resulting local system. We use a particular example of our construction to prove that the simple groups $\PSL_2(p^2)$ admit regular realizations over the field $\QQ(t)$ for primes $p\not\equiv 1,4,16\mod{21}$. Finally, we compute the monodromy of the Euler-Picard equation, reproving a classical result of Picard.
For a smooth geometrically integral variety $X$ over a field $k$ of characteristic 0, we introduce and investigate the extended Picard complex $UPic(X)$. It is a certain complex of Galois modules of length 2, whose zeroth cohomology is $\bar{k}[X]^*/ \bar{k}^*$ and whose first cohomology is $Pic(\bar{X})$, where $\bar{k}$ is a fixed algebraic closure of $k$ and $\bar{X}$ is obtained from $X$ by extension of scalars to $\bar{k}$. When $X$ is a $k$-torsor of a connected linear $k$-group $G$, we compute $UPic(X)=UPic(G)$ (in the derived category) in terms of the algebraic fundamental group $π_1(G…
A method for computing the open string mirror map and superpotential for noncompact Calabi-Yaus, following the physical computations of Lerche and Mayr, is presented. It is also shown that the obvious extension of these techniques to the compact case is not consistent. As an example, the local CP^2 case is worked out in 2 ways.
We give sufficient conditions for the semisimplicity of quantum cohomology of Fano varieties of Picard rank 1. We apply these techniques to prove new semisimplicity results for some Fano varieties of Picard rank 1 and large index. We also give examples of Fano varieties having a non semisimple small quantum cohomology but a semisimple big quantum cohomology.
In an earlier paper it was proved that if a differential field $(K,δ)$ is algebraically closed and closed under Picard-Vessiot extensions then every differential algebraic principal homogeneous space over K for a linear differential algebraic group G over K has a K-rational point (in fact if and only if). This paper explores whether and if so, how, this can be extended to (a) several derivations, (b) one automorphism. Under a natural notion of "generalized Picard-Vessiot extension" (in the case of several derivations), we give a counterexample. We also have a counterexample in the case of one …
We study the moduli spaces which classify smooth surfaces along with a complex line bundle. There are homological stability and Madsen--Weiss type results for these spaces (mostly due to Cohen and Madsen), and we discuss the cohomological calculations which may be deduced from them. We then relate these spaces to (a generalisation of) Kawazumi's extended mapping class groups, and hence deduce cohomological information about these. Finally, we relate these results to complex algebraic geometry. We construct a holomorphic stack classifying families of Riemann surfaces equipped with a fibrewise h…
We discuss the existence of an absolute Chow-Kuenneth decomposition for complete degenerations of families of Abelian threefolds with complex multiplication over a particular Picard Modular Surface studied by Holzapfel. In addition to the work of Gordon, Hanamura and Murre we use Relatively Complete Models in the sense of Mumford-Faltings-Chai of Picard Modular Surfaces in order to describe complete degenerations of families of abelian varieties. We furthermore prove vanishing results for cohomology groups of irreducible representations of certain arithmetic subgroups in SU(2,1) using the non-…
A conjecture of Kato says that the monodromy operator on the cohomology of a semi-stable degeneration of projective varieties is represented by an algebraic cycle on the special fiber of a normal crossing model of the fiber product degeneration. We prove this conjecture in the simple case of a semi-stable degeneration arising from a Lefschetz fibration.
The aim of this paper is to define and study the 3-category of extensions of Picard 2-stacks over a site S and to furnish a geometrical description of the cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves. More precisely, our main Theorem furnishes (1) a parametrization of the equivalence classes of objects, 1-arrows, 2-arrows, and 3-arrows of the 3-category of extensions of Picard 2-stacks by the cohomology groups Ext^i, and (2) a geometrical description of the cohomology groups Ext^i of length 3 complexes of abelian sheaves via extensions of Picard 2-stacks. To this end, we us…
We study geometric properties of the action of the Picard modular group $Γ=PU(2,1,\mathcal{O}_7)$ on the complex hyperbolic plane $H^2_\mathbb{C}$, where $\mathcal{O}_7$ denotes the ring of algebraic integers in $\mathbb{Q}(i\sqrt{7})$. We list conjugacy classes of maximal finite subgroups in $Γ$ and give an explicit description of the Fuchsian subgroups that occur as stabilizers of mirrors of complex reflections in $Γ$. As an application, we describe an explicit torsion-free subgroup of index $336$ in $Γ$.
We prove that the Brauer group of TMF is isomorphic to the Brauer group of the derived moduli stack of elliptic curves. Then, we compute the local Brauer group, i.e., the subgroup of the Brauer group of elements trivialized by some étale cover of the moduli stack, up to a finite 2-torsion group.
The main goal of this paper is to give an explicit formula for the cohomology of the sheaf of units of the punctured spectrum of a Stanley-Reisner ring. In particular we compute the local Picard group of $K [\triangle]$. To achieve this we study the corresponding purely combinatorial problem on the punctured spectrum of the pointed monoid defined by $\triangle$. The cohomology of the sheaf of units on ${\rm Spec}^ \bullet K[\triangle ]$ is then the direct sum of this combinatorial cohomology, which has a decomposition along the vertices, and another part depending on the field $K$.
We present a systematic effective method to construct coarse fundamental domains for the action of the Picard modular groups $PU(2,1,\mathcal{O}_d)$ where $\mathcal{O}_d$ has class number one, i.e. $d=1,2,3,7,11,19,43,67,163$. The computations can be performed quickly up to the value $d=19$. As an application of this method, we classify conjugacy classes of torsion elements, deduce short presentations for the groups, and construct neat subgroups of small index.
We continue our study of the variation of parabolic cohomology (math.AG/0310139) and derive an exact formula for the underlying Poincare duality. As an illustration of our methods, we compute the monodromy of the Picard-Euler system and its invariant Hermitian form, reproving a classical theorem of Picard.
We study differential equations satisfied by modular forms associated to $Γ_1\timesΓ_2$, where $Γ_i (i=1,2)$ are genus zero subgroups of $SL_2(\mathbf R)$ commensurable with $SL_2(\mathbf Z)$, e.g., $Γ_0(N)$ or $Γ_0(N)^*$. In some examples, these differential equations are realized as the Picard--Fuch differential equations of families of K3 surfaces with large Picard numbers, e.g., $19, 18, 17, 16$. Our method rediscovers some of the Lian--Yau examples of ``modular relations'' involving power series solutions to the second and the third order differential equations of Fuchsian type in [14, 15…
Let $f$ and $g$ be reduced homogeneous polynomials in separate sets of variables. We establish a simple formula that relates the eigenspace decomposition of the monodromy operator on the Milnor fiber cohomology of $fg$ to that of $f$ and $g$ separately. We use a relation between local systems and Milnor fiber cohomology that has been established by D. Cohen and A. Suciu.
This is a report on a joint project in experimental mathematics with Jonas Bergström and Carel Faber where we obtain information about modular forms by counting curves over finite fields.
We have recently proved a homological stability theorem for moduli spaces of r-Spin Riemann surfaces, which in particular implies a Madsen--Weiss theorem for these moduli spaces. This allows us to effectively study their stable cohomology, and to compute their stable rational cohomology and their integral Picard groups. Using these methods we give a complete description of their integral Picard groups for genus at least 9 in terms of geometrically defined generators, and determine the relations between them.
The cohomological rigidity problem for toric manifolds asks whether toric manifolds are diffeomorphic (or homeomorphic) if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. Many affirmative partial solutions to the problem have been obtained and no counterexample is known. In this paper, we study the diffeomorphism classification of toric Fano $d$-folds with $d=3,4$ or with Picard number $\ge 2d-2$. In particular, we show that those manifolds except for two toric Fano $4$-folds are diffeomorphic if their integral cohomology rings are isomorphic. The exceptional two toric Fano $4$-folds (their ID…
Let S be a site. We introduce the 2-category of biextensions of strictly commutative Picard S-stacks. We define the pull-back, the push-down, and the sum of such biextensions and we compute their homological interpretation: if P,Q and G are strictly commutative Picard S-stacks, the equivalence classes of biextensions of (P,Q) by G are parametrized by the cohomology group Ext^1([P] {\otimes} [Q] ,[G]), the isomorphism classes of arrows from such a biextension to itself are parametrized by the cohomology group Ext^0([P]{\otimes} [Q] ,[G]) and the automorphisms of an arrow from such a biextension…
The zeroth line bundle cohomology on Calabi-Yau three-folds encodes information about the existence of flop transitions and the genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants. We illustrate this claim by studying several Picard number 2 Calabi-Yau three-folds realised as complete intersections in products of projective spaces. Many of these manifolds exhibit certain symmetries on the Picard lattice which preserve the zeroth cohomology.
The aim of this paper is to extend some arithmetic results on elliptic modular forms to the case of Hilbert modular forms. Among these results let's mention : (1) the control of the image of the Galois representation modulo $p$, (2) Hida's congruence criterion outside an explicit set of primes $p$, and (3) the freeness of the integral cohomology of the Hilbert modular variety over certain local components of the Hecke algebra and the Gorenstein property of these local algebras. We study the arithmetic of the Hilbert modular forms by studying their modulo $p$ Galois representations and our main…
Let $X$ be a proper smooth toric variety over a perfectoid field of prime residue characteristic $p$. We study the perfectoid space $\mathcal{X}^{perf}$ which covers $X$ constructed by Scholze, showing that $\text{Pic}(\mathcal{X}^{perf})$ is canonically isomorphic to $\text{Pic}(X)[p^{-1}]$. We also compute the cohomology of line bundles on $\mathcal{X}^{perf}$ and establish analogs of Demazure and Batyrev-Borisov vanishing. This generalizes the first author's analogous results for "projectivoid space".
A new class of examples of surfaces with maximal Picard number is constructed. These carry pencils of genus two or three curves such their Jacobian fibrations are isogenous to fibre products of elliptic modular surfaces.
We determine explicit generators for a cohomology group constructed from a solution of a fuchsian linear differential equation and describe its relation with cohomology groups with coefficients in a local system. In the parameterized case, this yields into an algorithm which computes new fuchsian differential equations from those depending on multi-parameters. This generalizes the classical convolution of solutions of fuchsian differential equations.
We construct examples of $K3$ surfaces of geometric Picard rank $1$. Our method is a refinement of that of R. van Luijk. It is based on an analysis of the Galois module structure on étale cohomology. This allows to abandon the original limitation to cases of Picard rank $2$ after reduction modulo $p$. Furthermore, the use of Galois data enables us to construct examples which require significantly less computation time.
We determine all complex K3 surfaces with Picard rank 20 over Q. Here the Neron-Severi group has rank 20 and is generated by divisors which are defined over Q. Our proof uses modularity, the Artin-Tate conjecture and class group theory. With different techniques, the result has been established by Elkies to show that Mordell-Weil rank 18 over Q is impossible for an elliptic K3 surface. We then apply our methods to general singular K3 surfaces, i.e. with Neron-Severi group of rank 20, but not necessarily generated by divisors over Q.
Let $F$ be a totally real field in which $p$ is unramified. We prove that, if a cuspidal overconvergent Hilbert cuspidal form has small slopes under $U_p$-operators, then it is classical. Our method follows the original cohomological approach of Coleman. The key ingredient of the proof is giving an explicit description of the Goren-Oort stratification of the special fiber of the Hilbert modular variety. A byproduct of the proof is to show that, at least when $p$ is inert, of the rigid cohomology of the ordinary locus has the same image as the classical forms in the Grothendieck group of Hecke …
Part of these notes was written as the author's 2013 master thesis. For proper flat schemes over a complete discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristic, we construct an isomorphism of certain subgroups of the Picard group and the first cohomology group of the structure sheaf. When the Picard scheme is available and smooth, it recovers the isomorphism coming from its formal completion. A reinterpretation of an old theorem of Mattuck is given.
In this note, we prove that the Q-Picard group of the moduli space of n-pointed stable curves of genus g over an algebraically closed field is generated by the tautological classes. We also prove that the cycle map to the 2nd etale cohomology group is bijective.
Assuming that the differential field $(K,δ)$ is differentially large, in the sense of León Sánchez and Tressl, and "bounded" as a field, we prove that for any linear differential algebraic group $G$ over $K$, the differential Galois (or constrained) cohomology set $H^1_δ(K,G)$ is finite. This applies, among other things, to closed ordered differential fields $K$, in the sense of Singer, and to closed $p$-adic differential fields in the sense of Tressl. As an application, we prove a general existence result for parameterized Picard-Vessiot extensions within certain families of fields; if $(K,δ_…
The Witt group of a smooth curve over a real closed field is explicitely calculated. The method uses a comparison theorem between the graded Witt group and the etale cohomology groups. In the second part of the paper, the torsion Picard group of a smooth real curve is also computed. The calculation depends on a new invariant introduced here. We prove that several problems of real algebraic geometry are related to this invariant.
Let $X$ be a K3 surface with Picard group $\mathrm{Pic}(X)\cong\mathbb{Z} H$ such that $H^2=2n$. Let $M_{H}(\mathbf{v})$ be the moduli space of Gieseker semistable sheaves on $X$ with Mukai vector $\mathbf{v}$. We say that $\mathbf{v}$ satisfies weak Brill-Noether if the general sheaf in $M_{H}(\mathbf{v})$ has at most one nonzero cohomology group. We show that given any rank $r \geq 2$, there are only finitely many Mukai vectors of rank $r$ on K3 surfaces of Picard rank one where weak Brill-Noether fails. We give an algorithm for finding the potential counterexamples and classify all such cou…
The purpose of this article is to construct a Hecke-equivariant Chow motive whose realizations equal interior (or intersection) cohomology of Picard surfaces with regular algebraic coefficients. As a consequence, we are able to define Grothendieck motives for Picard modular forms.
We investigate a method proposed by E. Arrondo and J. Caravantes to study the Picard group of a smooth low-codimension subvariety X in a variety Y when Y is homogeneous. We prove that this method is strongly related to the signature σ_Y of the Poincare pairing on the middle cohomology of Y. We give under some topological assumptions a bound on the rank of Picard group Pic(X) in terms of σ_Y and remove these assumptions for grassmannians to generalise the main result of E. Arrondo and J. Caravantes.
