The symmetric spectra introduced by Hovey, Shipley and Smith are a convenient model for the stable homotopy category with a nice associative and commutative smash product on the point set level and a compatible Quillen closed model structure. About the only disadvantage of this model is that the stable equivalences cannot be defined by inverting those morphisms which induce isomorphisms on homotopy groups, because this would leave too many homotopy types. In this sense the naively defined homotopy groups are often `wrong`, and then their precise relationship to the `true` homotopy groups (i.e., morphisms in the stable homotopy category from sphere spectra) appears mysterious.
In this paper I discuss and exploit extra algebraic structure on the naively defined homotopy groups of symmetric spectra, namely a special kind of action of the monoid of injective self maps of the natural numbers. This extra structure clarifies several issues about homotopy groups and stable equivalences and explains why the naive homotopy groups are not so wrong after all. For example, the monoid action allows a simple characterization of semistable symmetric spectra.
We obtain explicit formulas for the rational homotopy groups of generalised symmetric spaces, i.e., the homogeneous spaces for which the isotropy subgroup appears as the fixed point group of some finite order automorphism of the group. In particular, this gives explicit formulas for the rational homotopy groups of all classical compact symmetric spaces.
Ganea proved that the loop space of $\mathbb{C}P^n$ is homotopy commutative if and only if $n=3$. We generalize this result to that the loop spaces of all irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces but $\mathbb{C}P^3$ are not homotopy commutative. The computation also applies to determining the homotopy nilpotency of the loop spaces of flag manifolds.
We establish model category structures on algebras and modules over operads in symmetric spectra, and study when a morphism of operads induces a Quillen equivalence between corresponding categories of algebras (resp. modules) over operads.
We study semistable symmetric spectra based on quite general monoidal model categories, including motivic examples. In particular, we establish a generalization of Schwede's list of equivalent characterizations of semistability in the case of motivic symmetric spectra. We also show that the motivic Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum and the algebraic cobordism spectrum are semistable. Finally, we show that semistability is preserved under localization if some reasonable conditions - which often hold in practice - are satisfied.
We establish certain smash operations on spaces over operads which are general analogues of the Samelson product on single loop spaces, and obtain a conceptual description of the structure of the homotopy groups of spaces $Y$ over a symmetric $K(π,1)$ operad: $π_*Y$ is a module over the free algebraic symmetric operad generated by operations on homotopy groups induced by these smash operations. In particular the homotopy groups of double loop spaces is a module over the free algebraic symmetric operad generated by the conjugacy classes of Brunnian braids modulo the conjugation action of pure b…
We study symmetric powers in the homotopy categories of abstract closed symmetric monoidal model categories, in both unstable and stable settings. As an outcome, we prove that symmetric powers preserve the Nisnevich and etale homotopy type in the unstable and stable motivic homotopy theories of schemes over a base. More precisely, if f is a weak equivalence of motivic spaces, or a weak equivalence between positively cofibrant motivic spectra, with respect to the Nisnevich or etale topology on schemes, then all symmetric powers Sym^n(f) are weak equivalences too. This gives left derived symmetr…
We show that the symmetric track group, which is an extension of the symmetric group associated to the second Stiefel- Withney class, acts as a crossed module on the secondary homotopy group of a pointed space. An application is given to cup-one products in unstable homotopy groups of spheres, generalizing a formula of Barratt-Jones-Mahowald.
This mostly expository paper records some basic facts about towers of homotopy fiber sequences. We give a proof that a pairing of towers induces a pairing of associated spectral sequences, for towers of spaces and towers of spectra.
We construct a stable model structure on profinite symmetric spectra with a continuous action of an arbitrary profinite group. This provides a natural framework for a new construction of homotopy fixed point spectra and of homotopy fixed point spectral sequences for the action of the extended Morava stabilizer group on Lubin-Tate spectra. These continuous homotopy fixed points are canonically equivalent to the homotopy fixed points of Devinatz and Hopkins but have a drastically simplified construction.
We show that the monoidal product on the stable homotopy category of spectra is essentially unique. This strengthens work of this author with Schwede on the uniqueness of models of the stable homotopy theory of spectra. As an application we show that with an added assumption about underlying model structures Margolis' axioms uniquely determine the stable homotopy category of spectra up to monoidal equivalence. Also, the equivalences constructed here give a unified construction of the known equivalences of the various symmetric monoidal categories of spectra (S-modules, \W-spaces, orthogonal sp…
The filtration on the infinite symmetric product of spheres by the number of factors provides a sequence of spectra between the sphere spectrum and the integral Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum. This filtration has received a lot of attention and the subquotients are interesting stable homotopy types. While the symmetric product filtration has been a major focus of research since the 1980s, essentially nothing was known when one adds group actions into the picture. We investigate the equivariant stable homotopy types, for compact Lie groups, obtained from this filtration of infinite symmetric produ…
In this paper homotopical methods for the description of subgroups determined by ideals in group rings are introduced. It is shown that in certain cases the subgroups determined by symmetric product of ideals in group rings can be described with the help of homotopy groups of spheres.
In this paper, we investigate some applications of commutator subgroups to homotopy groups and geometric groups. In particular, we show that the intersection subgroups of some canonical subgroups in certain link groups modulo their symmetric commutator subgroups are isomorphic to the (higher) homotopy groups. This gives a connection between links and homotopy groups. Similar results hold for braid and surface groups.
We give p-local homotopy decompositions of the loop spaces of compact, simply-connected symmetric spaces for quasi-regular primes. The factors are spheres, sphere bundles over spheres, and their loop spaces. As an application, upper bounds for the homotopy exponents are determined.
Given a CW-complex A we define an `A-shaped' homology theory which behaves nicely towards A-homotopy groups allowing the generalization of many classical results. We also develop a relative version of the Federer spectral sequence for computing A-homotopy groups. As an application we derive a generalization of the Hopf-Whitney theorem.
The focus of this paper is the comparison of two unstable homotopy spectral sequences-- the unstable mod p Adams spectral sequence that computes the unstable homotopy of a p-complete space, and the Goerss--Hopkins spectral sequence, which computes the unstable homotopy of the space of E-infinity maps between Hk-algebras, where k is the algebraic closure of the field with p elements and p is an odd prime. Using an adjunction between p-complete nilpotent spaces and a subset of Hk-algebras, this paper shows that the unit of this adjunction provides an isomorphism between these spectral sequences.
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we prove higher homotopy excision and higher Blakers-Massey theorems, and their duals, for algebras and left modules over operads in the category of modules over a commutative ring spectrum (e.g., structured ring spectra).
These are notes for a five lecture series intended to uncover large-scale phenomena in the homotopy groups of spheres using the Adams-Novikov Spectral Sequence. The lectures were given in Strasbourg, May 7-11, 2007.
We introduce a computationally tractable way to describe the $\mathbb Z$-homotopy fixed points of a $C_{n}$-spectrum $E$, producing a genuine $C_{n}$ spectrum $E^{hn\mathbb Z}$ whose fixed and homotopy fixed points agree and are the $\mathbb Z$-homotopy fixed points of $E$. These form a piece of a contravariant functor from the divisor poset of $n$ to genuine $C_{n}$-spectra, and when $E$ is an $N_{\infty}$-ring spectrum, this functor lifts to a functor of $N_{\infty}$-ring spectra. For spectra like the Real Johnson--Wilson theories or the norms of Real bordism, the slice spectral sequence pro…
We study continuous, symmetric and unanimous aggregation functions and continuous majority functions and prove that such functions exist on a choice space if and only if the choice space is contractible.
The aim of this paper is to show that homotopy pro-nilpotent structured ring spectra are TQ-local, where structured ring spectra are described as algebras over a spectral operad O. Here, TQ is short for topological Quillen homology, which is weakly equivalent to O-algebra stabilization. An O-algebra is called homotopy pro-nilpotent if it is equivalent to a limit of nilpotent O-algebras. Our result provides new positive evidence to a conjecture by Francis-Gaisgory on Koszul duality for general operads. As an application, we simultaneously extend the previously known 0-connected and nilpotent TQ…
We endow categories of non-symmetric operads with natural model structures. We work with no restriction on our operads and only assume the usual hypotheses for model categories with a symmetric monoidal structure. We also study categories of algebras over these operads in enriched non-symmetric monoidal model categories.
We compute the mod(p) homotopy groups of the continuous homotopy fixed point spectrum E_2^{hH_2} for p>2, where E_n is the Landweber exact spectrum whose coefficient ring is the ring of functions on the Lubin-Tate moduli space of lifts of the height n Honda formal group law over F_{p^n}, and H_n is the subgroup WF^x_{p^n} wreath product Gal(F_{p^n}/F_p) of the extended Morava stabilizer group G_n. We examine some consequences of this related to Brown-Comenetz duality and to finiteness properties of homotopy groups of K(n)_*-local spectra. We also indicate a plan for computing pi_*(E_n^{hH_n} s…
We extend the theory of equivariant orthogonal spectra from finite groups to profinite groups, and more generally from compact Lie groups to compact Hausdorff groups. The G-homotopy theory is "pieced together" from the G/U-homotopy theories for suitable quotient groups G/U of G; a motivation is the way continuous group cohomology of a profinite group is built out of the cohomology of its finite quotient groups. In the model category of equivariant spectra Postnikov towers are studied from a general perspective. We introduce pro-G-spectra and construct various model structures on them. A key pr…
The primary algebraic model of a ring spectrum is the ring of homotopy groups. We introduce the secondary model which has the structure of a secondary analogue of a ring. This new algebraic model determines Massey products and cup-one squares. As an application we obtain new derivations of the homotopy ring.
We survey computations of stable motivic homotopy groups over various fields. The main tools are the motivic Adams spectral sequence, the motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, and the effective slice spectral sequence. We state some projects for future study.
We provide a calculational method for rational stable equivariant homotopy theory for a torus G based on the homology of the Borel construction on fixed points. More precisely we define an abelian torsion model, A_t(G) of finite injective dimension, a homology theory \piAt_* taking values in A_t(G) based on the homology of the Borel construction, and a finite Adams spectral sequence Ext_{A_t(G)}^{*,*}(\piAt_*(X), \piAt_*(Y)) ==> [X,Y]^G_* for rational G-spectra X and Y.
We classify thick tensor ideals of finite objects in the category of rational torus-equivariant spectra, showing that they are completely determined by geometric isotropy. This is essentially equivalent to showing that the Balmer spectrum is the set of closed subgroups under cotoral inclusion. Corresponding statements are deduced for toral spectra for general groups.
In order to treat multiplicative phenomena in twisted (co)homology, we introduce a new point-set level framework for parametrized homotopy theory. We provide a convolution smash product that descends to the corresponding infinity-categorical product and allows for convenient constructions of commutative parametrized ring spectra. As an immediate application, we compare various models for generalized Thom spectra. In a companion paper, this approach is used to compare homotopical and operator algebraic models for twisted K-theory.
We prove, under mild assumptions, that a Quillen equivalence between symmetric monoidal model categories gives rise to a Quillen equivalence between their model categories of (non-symmetric) operads, and also between model categories of algebras over operads. We also show left properness results on model categories of operads and algebras over operads. As an application, we prove homotopy invariance for (unital) associative operads.
Modern categories of spectra such as that of Elmendorf et al equipped with strictly symmetric monoidal smash products allows the introduction of symmetric monoids providing a new way to study highly coherent commutative ring spectra. These have categories of modules which are generalisations of the classical categories of spectra that correspond to modules over the sphere spectrum; passing to their derived or homotopy categories leads to new contexts in which homotopy theory can be explored. In this paper we describe some of the tools available for studying these `brave new homotopy theories' …
This paper is an English translation of chapter nine of the book "Adams spectral sequence and stable homotopy groups of spheres" by Jinkun Lin (in Chinese)(Sciences Press, Beijing 2007). In this paper, a sequence of new indecomposable families in the stable homotopy groups of spheres such as h_0h_n,h_nb_n,h_0h_nh_m,h_0(h_mb_{n-1}-b_{m-1}h_n) families was detected. The proof of all the detections was stated in this paper in based on several published papers by the author.
We develop a functorial approach to the study of the homotopy groups of spheres and Moore spaces $M(A,n)$, based on the Curtis spectral sequence and the decomposition of Lie functors as iterates of simpler functors such as the symmetric or exterior algebra functors. The discussion takes place over the integers, and includes a functorial description of the derived functors of certain Lie algebra functors, as well as of all the main cubical functors (such as the degree 3 component $SP^3$ of the symmetric algebra functor). As an illustration of this method, we retrieve in a purely algebraic manne…
In this paper we develop the basic homotopy theory of G-symmetric spectra (that is, symmetric spectra with a G-action) for a finite group G, as a model for equivariant stable homotopy with respect to a G-set universe. This model lies in between Mandell's equivariant symmetric spectra and the G-orthogonal spectra of Mandell and May and is Quillen equivalent to the two. We further discuss equivariant semistability, construct model structures on module, algebra and commutative algebra categories and describe the homotopical properties of the multiplicative norm in this context.
Let $R$ be a commutative ring with unit. We consider the homotopy theory of the category of spectral sequences of $R$-modules with the class of weak equivalences given by those morphisms inducing a quasi-isomorphism at a certain fixed page. We show that this admits a structure close to that of a category of fibrant objects in the sense of Brown and in particular the structure of a partial Brown category with fibrant objects. We use this to compare with related structures on the categories of multicomplexes and filtered complexes.
Using techniques in motivic homotopy theory, especially the theorem of Gheorghe, the second and the third author on the isomorphism between motivic Adams spectral sequence for $Cτ$ and the algebraic Novikov spectral sequence for $BP_*$, we compute the classical and motivic stable homotopy groups of spheres from dimension 0 to 90, except for some carefully enumerated uncertainties.
Recently we introduced a class $\widetilde{\mathcal{Z}}$ of $2$-local finite spectra and showed that all spectra $Z\in \widetilde{\mathcal{Z}}$ admit a $v_2$-self-map of periodicity $1$. The aim of this article is to compute the $K(2)$-local homotopy groups $π_*L_{K(2)}Z$ of all spectra $Z \in \widetilde{\mathcal{Z}}$ using a homotopy fixed point spectral sequence, and we give an almost complete computation. The incompleteness lies in the fact that we are unable to eliminate one family of $d_3$-differentials and a few potential hidden extensions, though we conjecture that all these differentia…
We construct an abelian category A(G) of sheaves over a category of closed subgroups of the r-torus G and show it is of finite injective dimension. It can be used as a model for rational $G$-spectra in the sense that there is a homology theory \piA_*: G-spectra/Q --> A(G) on rational G-spectra with values in A(G), and the associated Adams spectral sequence converges for all rational $G$-spectra and collapses at a finite stage.
We use a "twisted group algebra" method to constructively adjoin formal radicals $\sqrt[n]α$, for $α$ a unit in a commutative ring spectrum or an invertible object in a symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category. We show that this construction is classified by maps from Eilenberg-Mac Lane objects to the unit spectrum, the Picard spectrum, and the Brauer spectrum.
The purpose of this paper is to show that various convolution products are fully homotopical, meaning that they preserve weak equivalences in both variables without any cofibrancy hypothesis. We establish this property for diagrams of simplicial sets indexed by the category of finite sets and injections and for tame $M$-simplicial sets, with $M$ the monoid of injective self-maps of the positive natural numbers. We also show that a certain convolution product studied by Nikolaus and the first author is fully homotopical. This implies that every presentably symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category c…
Let E(n) and T(m) for nonnegative integers n and m denote the Johnson-Wilson and the Ravenel spectra, respectively. Given a spectrum whose E(n)_*-homology is E(n)_*(T(m))/(v_1,...,v_{n-1}), then each homotopy group of it estimates the order of each homotopy group of L_nT(m). We here study the E(n)-based Adams E_2-term of it and present that the determination of the E_2-term is unexpectedly complex for odd prime case. At the prime two, we determine the E_{infty}-term for pi_*(L_2T(1)/(v_1)), whose computation is easier than that of pi_*(L_2T(1)) as we expect.
We analyze the functorial and multiplicative properties of the Thom spectrum functor in the setting of symmetric spectra, and we establish the relevant homotopy invariance.
In this article, we extend Sullivan's PL de Rham theory to obtain simple algebraic models for the rational homotopy theory of parametrised spectra. This simplifies and complements the results of arXiv:1910.14608, which are based on Quillen's rational homotopy theory. According to Sullivan, the rational homotopy type of a nilpotent space $X$ with finite Betti numbers is completely determined by a commutative differential graded algebra $A$ modelling the cup product on rational cohomology. In this article we extend this correspondence between topology and algebra to parametrised stable homotopy …
Cofiltered diagrams of spectra, also called pro-spectra, have arisen in diverse areas, and to date have been treated in an ad hoc manner. The purpose of this paper is to systematically develop a homotopy theory of pro-spectra and to study its relation to the usual homotopy theory of spectra, as a foundation for future applications. The surprising result we find is that our homotopy theory of pro-spectra is Quillen equivalent to the opposite of the homotopy theory of spectra. This provides a convenient duality theory for all spectra, extending the classical notion of Spanier-Whitehead duality w…
Let G be a profinite group with finite virtual cohomological dimension and let X be a discrete G-spectrum. If H and K are closed subgroups of G, with H normal in K, then, in general, the K/H-spectrum X^{hH} is not known to be a continuous K/H-spectrum, so that it is not known (in general) how to define the iterated homotopy fixed point spectrum (X^{hH})^{hK/H}. To address this situation, we define homotopy fixed points for delta-discrete G-spectra and show that the setting of delta-discrete G-spectra gives a good framework within which to work. In particular, we show that by using delta-discre…
We show that every small homotopy functor from spectra to spectra is weakly equivalent to a filtered colimit of representable functors represented in cofibrant spectra. Moreover, we present this classification as a Quillen equivalence of the category of small functors from spectra to spectra equipped with the homotopy model structure and the opposite of the pro-category of spectra with the strict model structure.
In this paper we study the global structure of the stable homotopy theory of spectra. We establish criteria for when the homotopy theory associated to a given stable model category agrees with the classical stable homotopy theory of spectra. One sufficient condition is that the associated homotopy category is equivalent to the stable homotopy category as a triangulated category with an action of the ring of stable homotopy groups of spheres. In other words, the classical stable homotopy theory, with all of its higher order information, is determined by the homotopy category as a triangulated c…
Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we describe and study a homotopy completion tower for algebras and left modules over operads in the category of modules over a commutative ring spectrum (e.g., structured ring spectra). We prove a strong convergence theorem that for 0-connected algebras and modules over a (-1)-connected operad, the homotopy completion tower interpolates (in a strong sense) between topological Quillen homology and the identity functor. By systematically exploiting strong convergence, we prove several theorems concerning the topological Quillen homology of algebras an…
Toen has interpreted the schematization problem as originally imagined by Grothendieck in "Pursuing Stacks" in such a way that solution(s) to this problem could be given. As he pointed out, there are many solutions available, and he gave two constructions solving this problem. What we do in the present work is reconsider what Grothendieck initially had in mind and develop a formalism that provides a concept of "schematization" and corresponding homotopy groups of "schematized" homotopy types. In our view this can be realized if we generalize topological spaces to symmetric spectra, and the map…
We give rigorous foundations for parametrized homotopy theory in this monograph. After preliminaries on point-set topology, base change functors, and proper actions of non-compact Lie groups, we develop the homotopy theory of equivariant ex-spaces (spaces over and under a given space) and of equivariant parametrized spectra. We emphasize several issues of independent interest and include much new material on the general theory of topologically enriched model categories. The essential point is to resolve problems in parametrized homotopy theory that have no nonparametrized counterparts. In cont…
Building on Quillen's rational homotopy theory, we obtain algebraic models for the rational homotopy theory of parametrised spectra. For any simply-connected space $X$ there is a dg Lie algebra $Λ_X$ and a (coassociative cocommutative) dg coalgebra $C_X$ that model the rational homotopy type. In this article, we prove that the rational homotopy type of an $X$-parametrised spectrum is completely encoded by a $Λ_X$-representation and also by a $C_X$-comodule. The correspondence between rational parametrised spectra and algebraic data is obtained by means of symmetric monoidal equivalences of hom…
