We construct higher genus Riemann's minimal surfaces properly embedded in the Euclidean space. To do that we glue end by end a Costa-Hoffman-Meeks examples to two halves genus zero Riemann's minimal surfaces. In first we need to perform a deformation of a Costa-Hoffman-Meeks example to prescribe the flux vector along the catenoidal ends. Then we study the mapping property of the Jacobi operator on the half Riemann example as a perturbation analysis of a CMC-Delaunay half cylinder.
Given an smooth function $K <0$ we prove a result by Berger, Kazhdan and others that in every conformal class there exists a metric which attains this function as its Gaussian curvature for a compact Riemann surface of genus $g>1$. We do so by minimizing an appropriate functional using elementary analysis. In particular for $K$ a negative constant, this provides an elementary proof of the uniformization theorem for compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g >1$.
Involutions without fixed points on hyperbolic closed Riemann surface are discussed. For an orientable surface $X$ of even genus with an arbitrary Riemannian metric $d$ admitting an involution $τ$, it is known that $\min_{p\in X}d(p,τ(p))$ is bounded by a constant which depends on the genus of $X$. The equivalent result is proved to be false in odd genus, and the optimal constant for hyperbolic Riemann surfaces is calculated in genus 2.
We show the existence of 1-parameter families of non-periodic, complete, embedded minimal surfaces in euclidean space with infinitely many parallel planar ends. In particular we are able to produce finite genus examples and quasi-periodic examples of infinite genus.
In this article we study the asymptotic behavior of small eigenvalues of Riemann surfaces for large genus. We show that for any positive integer $k$, as the genus $g$ goes to infinity, the smallest $k$-th eigenvalue of Riemann surfaces in any thick part of moduli space of Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ is uniformly comparable to $\frac{1}{g^2}$ in $g$. In the proof of the upper bound, for any constant $ε>0$, we will construct a closed Riemann surface of genus $g$ in any $ε$-thick part of moduli space such that it admits a pants decomposition whose boundary curves all have length equal to $ε$, a…
Brooks and Makover introduced an approach to random Riemann surfaces based on associating a dense set of them - Belyi surfaces - with random cubic graphs. In this paper, using Bollobas model for random regular graphs, we examine the topological structure of these surfaces, obtaining in particular an estimate for the expected value of their genus.
This article is an attempt to generalize Riemann's bilinear relations on compact Riemann surface of genus at least 2, which may lead to new structures in the theory of hyperbolic Riemann surfaces. No significant result is obtained, the article serves to bring the readers' attention to the observation made by [Bol-1949], and some easy consequences.
We will show that any open Riemann surface $M$ of finite genus is biholomorphic to an open set of a compact Riemann surface. Moreover, we will introduce a quotient space of forms in $M$ that determines if $M$ has finite genus and also the minimal genus where $M$ can be holomorphically embedded.
Let $S$ be a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$. We call a systole a shortest simple closed geodesic in $S$ and denote by $\mathop{sys}(S)$ its length. Let $\mathop{msys(g)}$ be the maximal value that $\mathop{sys}(\cdot)$ can attain among the compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$. We call a (globally) maximal surface $S_{max}$ a compact Riemann surface of genus $g$ whose systole has length $\mathop{msys}(g)$. In Section 2 we use cutting and pasting techniques to construct compact hyperbolic Riemann surfaces with large systoles from maximal surfaces. This enables us to prov…
In this paper, we build up a min-max theory for minimal surfaces using sweepouts of surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$ and $m\geq 1$ ideal boundary components. We show that the width for the area functional can be achieved by a bubble tree limit consisting of branched genus $g$ free boundary minimal surfaces with nodes, and possibly finitely many branched minimal spheres and free boundary minimal disks.
We prove that for each positive integer g, there exists a complete minimal surface of genus g that is properly embedded in three-dimensional euclidean space and that is asymptotic to the helicoid.
We employ min-max techniques to show that the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^3$ contains embedded free boundary minimal surfaces with connected boundary and arbitrary genus.
We give examples of isospectral non-isometric surfaces of genus 2 and 3 with variable curvatures and apply the result to construct isospectral potentials on Riemann surfaces of genus 2.
Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two. The main theorem of arxiv:1010.1488 says that for any positive integer $n \leq 2({\rm genus}(X)-1)$, the symmetric product $S^n(X)$ does not admit any Kähler metric satisfying the condition that all the holomorphic bisectional curvatures are nonnegative. Our aim here is to give a very simple and direct proof of this result of Bökstedt and Romão.
We construct Weierstrass data for higher genus embedded doubly periodic minimal surfaces and present numerical evidence that the associated period problem can be solved. In the orthogonal ends case, there previously was only one known surface for each genus. We illustrate multiple new examples for each genus g>2. In the parallel ends case, the known examples limit as a foliation of parallel planes with nodes. We construct a new example for each genus g>2 that limit as g-1 singly periodic Scherk surfaces glued between two doubly periodic Scherk surfaces and also as a singly periodic surface wit…
In this article, we provide bounds on systoles associated to a holomorphic $1$-form $ω$ on a Riemann surface $X$. In particular, we show that if $X$ has genus two, then, up to homotopy, there are at most $10$ systolic loops on $(X,ω)$ and, moreover, that this bound is realized by a unique translation surface up to homothety. For general genus $g$ and a holomorphic 1-form $ω$ with one zero, we provide the optimal upper bound, $6g-3$, on the number of homotopy classes of systoles. If, in addition, $X$ is hyperelliptic, then we prove that the optimal upper bound is $6g-5$.
Let M be a 3-manifold (possibly with boundary). We show that, for any positive integer g, there exists an open nonempty set of metrics on M for each of which there are stable compact embedded minimal surfaces of genus g with arbitrarily large area. This extends the result of Colding and Minicozzi for g=1.
To a compact Riemann surface of genus g can be assigned a principally polarized abelian variety (PPAV) of dimension g, the Jacobian of the Riemann surface. The Schottky problem is to discern the Jacobians among the PPAVs. Buser and Sarnak showed, that the square of the first successive minimum, the squared norm of the shortest non-zero vector in the lattice of a Jacobian of a Riemann surface of genus g is bounded from above by log(4g), whereas it can be of order g for the lattice of a PPAV of dimension g. We show, that in the case of a hyperelliptic surface this geometric invariant is bounded …
In this article we study the first eigenvalues of closed Riemann surfaces for large genus. We show that for every closed Riemann surface $X_g$ of genus $g$ $(g\geq 2)$, the first eigenvalue of $X_g$ is greater than $\frac{\mathcal{L}_1(X_g)}{g^2}$ up to a uniform positive constant multiplication. Where $\mathcal{L}_1(X_g)$ is the shortest length of multi closed curves separating $X_g$. Moreover,we also show that this new lower bound is optimal as $g \to \infty$.
In this paper we construct an example of a complete immersed minimal surface in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of genus one with two embedded catenoid-type ends, one Enneper-type end and total Gauss curvature $-16π.$ The proof of the existence of this example, was obtained using the Weierstrass representation, the theory of elliptic functions and explicitly solving the period problem.
The Weierstrass representation for minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ provides a flexible method for constructing minimal surfaces of arbitrary genus. The topological limitations of minimal surfaces interfere with this providing a more general geometric modeling tool. Minimal surfaces lie in the larger class of harmonic surfaces, which in general don't have the same topological limitations of minimal surfaces and can have complicated embedded ends. In this paper we demonstrate the flexibility of using the Weierstrass representation for harmonic surfaces to combine embedded harmonic ends togeth…
A very interesting problem in the classical theory of minimal surfaces consists of the classification of such surfaces under some geometrical and topological constraints. In this short paper, we give a brief summary of the known classification results for properly embedded minimal surfaces with genus zero in $\mathbb{R}^3$ or quotients of $\mathbb{R}^3$ by one or two independent translations. This does not intend to be an exhaustive review of the tools or proofs in the field, but a simple explanation of the currently known results.
Consider a sequence of closed, orientable surfaces of fixed genus $g$ in a Riemannian manifold $M$ with uniform upper bounds on mean curvature and area. We show that on passing to a subsequence and choosing appropriate parametrisations, the inclusion maps converge in $C^0$ to a map from a surface of genus $g$ to $M$. We also show that, on passing to a further subsequence, the distance functions corresponding to pullback metrics converge to a pseudo-metric of fractal dimension two. As a corollary, we obtain a purely geometric result. Namely, we show that bounds on the mean curvature, area and g…
For every genus $g$, we prove that $S^2 \times R$ contains complete, properly embedded, genus-$g$ minimal surfaces whose two ends are asymptotic to helicoids of any prescribed pitch. We also show that as the radius of the $S^2$ tends to infinity, these examples converge smoothly to complete, properly embedded minimal surfaces in $R^3$ that are helicoidal at infinity. We prove that helicoidal surfaces in $R^3$ of every prescribed genus occur as such limits of examples in $S^2\times R$.
We formulate and solve the analog of the universal Conformal Ward Identity for the stress-energy tensor on a compact Riemann surface of genus $g>1$, and present a rigorous invariant formulation of the chiral sector in the induced two-dimensional gravity on higher genus Riemann surfaces. Our construction of the action functional uses various double complexes naturally associated with a Riemann surface, with computations that are quite similar to descent calculations in BRST cohomology theory. We also provide an interpretation for the action functional in terms of the geometry of different fiber…
In this paper, we build up a min-max theory for minimal surfaces using sweepouts of surfaces of genus $g\geq 2$. We develop a direct variational methods similar to the proof of the famous Plateau problem by J. Douglas and T. Rado. As a result, we show that the min-max value for the area functional can be achieved by a bubble tree limit consisting of branched genus-$g$ minimal surfaces with nodes, and possibly finitely many branched minimal spheres. We also prove a Colding-Minicozzi type strong convergence theorem similar to the classical mountain pass lemma. Our results extend the min-max theo…
We prove that the area of each nonflat genus zero free boundary minimal surface embedded in the unit $3$-ball is less than the area of its radial projection to $\mathbb{S}^2$. The inequality is asymptotically sharp, and we prove any sequence of surfaces saturating it converges weakly to $\mathbb{S}^2$, as currents and as varifolds.
The topological type of a non-compact Riemann surface is determined by its ends space and the ends having infinite genus. In this paper for a non-compact Riemann Surface $S_{m,s}$ with $s$ ends and exactly $m$ of them with infinite genus, such that $m,s\in \mathbb{N}$ and $1<m\leq s$, we give a precise description of the infinite set of generators of a Fuchsian (geometric Schottky) group $Γ_{m,s}$ such that the quotient space $\mathbb{H}/ Γ_{m, s}$ is homeomorphic to $S_{m,s}$ and has infinite area. For this construction, we exhibit a hyperbolic polygon with an infinite number of sides and giv…
Let $S_g$ be a closed surface of genus $g$ and $\mathbb{M}_g$ be the moduli space of $S_g$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. In this paper we investigate the Weil-Petersson curvatures of $\mathbb{M}_g$ for large genus $g$. First, we study the asymptotic behavior of the extremal Weil-Petersson holomorphic sectional curvatures at certain thick surfaces in $\mathbb{M}_g$ as $g \to \infty$. Then we prove two curvature properties on the whole space $\mathbb{M}_g$ as $g\to \infty$ in a probabilistic way.
A pair of points in a riemannian manifold $M$ is secure if the geodesics between the points can be blocked by a finite number of point obstacles; otherwise the pair of points is insecure. A manifold is secure if all pairs of points in $M$ are secure. A manifold is insecure if there exists an insecure point pair, and totally insecure if all point pairs are insecure. Compact, flat manifolds are secure. A standing conjecture says that these are the only secure, compact riemannian manifolds. We prove this for surfaces of genus greater than zero. We also prove that a closed surface of genus greater…
We prove optimal genus bounds for minimal surfaces arising from the min-max construction of Simon-Smith. This confirms a conjecture made by Pitts-Rubinstein in 1986.
We use Colding--Minicozzi lamination theory to study the systole of large genus minimal surfaces in an ambient three-manifold of positive Ricci curvature.
Minimal tori that are linearly full in the 3-sphere possess a natural invariant g called their spectral genus, which was introduced by Hitchin. We show that for each g>0, there are countably many real g-dimensional families of minimally immersed tori with spectral genus g (two of these dimensions are just reparametrisations of the torus). Each family maps from a fixed torus of rectangular conformal type.
For Finsler metrics (no reversibility assumed) on closed orientable surfaces of genus greater than one, we study the dynamics of minimal rays and minimal geodesics in the universal cover. We prove in particular, that for almost all asymptotic directions the minimal rays with these directions laminate the universal cover and that the Busemann functions with these directions are unique up to adding constants. Moreover, using a kind of weak KAM theory, we show that for almost all types of minimal geodesics in the sense of Morse, there is precisely one minimal geodesic of this type.
This paper is the first in a series where we attempt to give a complete description of the space of all embedded minimal surfaces of fixed genus in a fixed (but arbitrary) closed Riemannian 3-manifold. The key for understanding such surfaces is to understand the local structure in a ball and in particular the structure of an embedded minimal disk in a ball in $\RR^3$ (with the flat metric).
This paper is the fourth in a series where we describe the space of all embedded minimal surfaces of fixed genus in a fixed (but arbitrary) closed 3-manifold. The key is to understand the structure of an embedded minimal disk in a ball in $\RR^3$. This was undertaken in [CM3], [CM4] and the global version of it will be completed here; see [CM15] for discussion of the local case and [CM13], [CM14] where we have surveyed our results about embedded minimal disks.
For each integer $g\geq 1$ we use variational methods to construct in the unit $3$-ball $B$ a free boundary minimal surface $Σ_g$ of symmetry group $\mathbb{D}_{g+1}$. For $g$ large, $Σ_g$ has three boundary components and genus $g$. As $g\rightarrow\infty$ the surfaces $Σ_g$ converge as varifolds to the union of the disk and critical catenoid. These examples are the first with genus greater than $1$ and were conjectured to exist by Fraser-Schoen. We also construct several new free boundary minimal surfaces in $B$ with the symmetry groups of the cube, tetrahedron and dodecahedron. Finally, we …
Short geodesics are important in the study of the geometry and the spectra of Riemann surfaces. Bers' theorem gives a global bound on the length of the first $3g-3$ geodesics. We use the construction of Brooks and Makover of random Riemann surfaces to investigate the distribution of short ($< \log (g)$) geodesics on a random Riemann surfaces. We calculate the expected value of the shortest geodesic, and show that if one orders prime non-intersecting geodesics by length $γ_1\le γ_2\le ... \le γ_i ,...$, then for fixed $k$, if one allows the genus to go to infinity, the length of $γ_{k}$ is inde…
We consider any Finsler metric on a closed, orientable surface of genus greater than one. H. M. Morse proved that we can associate an asymptotic direction to minimal rays in the universal cover (in the Poincaré disc: a point on the unit circle). We prove here that, if two minimal rays have a common asymptotic direction, which is not a fixed point of the group of deck transformations, then the two rays can intersect at most in a common initial point. This has strong consequences for the structure of the set of minimal geodesics, as well as for the set of Busemann functions associated to the Fin…
In this article, we prove that if $(M,g)$ is a genus $G$ orientable surface with a single boundary component $S^1$, and if $(D,g_0)$ is a disc such that interior points are connected by unique geodesics and $$d_{(D,g_0)}(x,y) \geq d_{(M,g)}(x,y)$$ for all $x,y \in \partial M = \partial D$, then $$(1 + \frac{2 G}π) \textrm{Area}(M,g) \geq \textrm{Area}(D,g_0).$$
For every odd natural number g=2d+1 we prove the existence of a countably infinite family of special Lagrangian cones in C^3 over a closed Riemann surface of genus g, using a geometric PDE gluing method.
