Minimal surfaces with uniform curvature (or area) bounds have been well understood and the regularity theory is complete, yet essentially nothing was known without such bounds. We discuss here the theory of embedded (i.e., without self-intersections) minimal surfaces in Euclidean 3-space without a priori bounds. A General Existence Theorem for Embedded Minimal Surfaces with Free Boundary

In this paper, we develop a general existence theory for properly embedded minimal surfaces with free boundary in any compact Riemannian 3-manifold $M$ with boundary $\partial M$. The main feature of our result is that no convexity assumption is required on $\partial M$. Our proof uses a variant of the min-max construction first considered by Almgren and Pitts. Genus bounds for minimal surfaces arising from min-max constructions

In this paper we prove genus bounds for closed embedded minimal surfaces in a closed 3-dimensional manifold constructed via min-max arguments. A stronger estimate was announced by Pitts and Rubistein but to our knowledge its proof has never been published. Our proof follows ideas of Simon and uses an extension of a famous result of Meeks, Simon and Yau on the convergence of minimizing sequences of isotopic surfaces. This result is proved in the second part of the paper.

On the Canham Problem: Bending Energy Minimizers for any Genus and Isoperimetric Ratio

Building on work of Mondino-Scharrer, we show that among closed, smoothly embedded surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^3$ of genus $g$ and given isoperimetric ratio $v$, there exists one with minimum bending energy $\mathcal{W}$. We do this by gluing $g+1$ small catenoidal bridges to the bigraph of a singular solution for the linearized Willmore equation $Δ(Δ+2)φ=0$ on the $(g+1)$-punctured sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$ to construct a comparison surface of genus $g$ with arbitrarily small isoperimetric ratio $v\in (0, 1)$ and $\mathcal{W} < 8π$.

Minimal surfaces in S^3: a survey of recent results

In this survey, we discuss various aspects of the minimal surface equation in the three-sphere S^3. After recalling the basic definitions, we describe a family of immersed minimal tori with rotational symmetry. We then review the known examples of embedded minimal surfaces in S^3. Besides the equator and the Clifford torus, these include the Lawson and Kapouleas-Yang examples, as well as a new family of examples found recently by Choe and Soret.
