We consider surfaces embedded in a 3D contact sub-Riemannian manifold and the problem of the finiteness of the induced distance (i.e., the infimum of the length of horizontal curves that belong to the surface). Recently it has been proved that for a surface having the topology of a sphere embedded in a tight co-orientable structure, the distance is always finite. In this paper we study closed surfaces of genus larger than 1, proving that such surfaces can be embedded in such a way that the induced distance is finite or infinite. We then study the structural stability of the finiteness/not-finiteness of the distance.
A pair of points in a riemannian manifold $M$ is secure if the geodesics between the points can be blocked by a finite number of point obstacles; otherwise the pair of points is insecure. A manifold is secure if all pairs of points in $M$ are secure. A manifold is insecure if there exists an insecure point pair, and totally insecure if all point pairs are insecure. Compact, flat manifolds are secure. A standing conjecture says that these are the only secure, compact riemannian manifolds. We prove this for surfaces of genus greater than zero. We also prove that a closed surface of genus greater…
Consider a sequence of closed, orientable surfaces of fixed genus $g$ in a Riemannian manifold $M$ with uniform upper bounds on mean curvature and area. We show that on passing to a subsequence and choosing appropriate parametrisations, the inclusion maps converge in $C^0$ to a map from a surface of genus $g$ to $M$. We also show that, on passing to a further subsequence, the distance functions corresponding to pullback metrics converge to a pseudo-metric of fractal dimension two. As a corollary, we obtain a purely geometric result. Namely, we show that bounds on the mean curvature, area and g…
In this paper, we build up a min-max theory for minimal surfaces using sweepouts of surfaces of genus $g\geq 2$. We develop a direct variational methods similar to the proof of the famous Plateau problem by J. Douglas and T. Rado. As a result, we show that the min-max value for the area functional can be achieved by a bubble tree limit consisting of branched genus-$g$ minimal surfaces with nodes, and possibly finitely many branched minimal spheres. We also prove a Colding-Minicozzi type strong convergence theorem similar to the classical mountain pass lemma. Our results extend the min-max theo…
Let $(X,g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold with quasi-positive Riemannian scalar curvature. If there exists a complex structure $J$ compatible with $g$, then the canonical bundle $K_X$ is not pseudo-effective and the Kodaira dimension $κ(X,J)=-\infty$. We also introduce the complex Yamabe number $λ_c(X)$ for compact complex manifold $X$, and show that if $λ_c(X)>0$, then $κ(X)=-\infty$; moreover, if $X$ is also spin, then the Hirzebruch $A$-hat genus $\hat A(X)=0$.
Molino's theory is a mathematical tool for studying Riemannian foliations. In this paper, we propose a generalization of Molino's theory with two Riemannian foliations. For this purpose, the projection of foliation with respect to a fibration is discussed. The generalization results in an equivariant basic cohomological isomorphism in case of Killing foliation. It is a generalization of results given by Goertsches and Töben. We also give a geometric realization of the cohomological isomorphism through equivariant basic Â-genus characters, who play a prominent role in calculating the index of a…
In this paper, we build up a min-max theory for minimal surfaces using sweepouts of surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$ and $m\geq 1$ ideal boundary components. We show that the width for the area functional can be achieved by a bubble tree limit consisting of branched genus $g$ free boundary minimal surfaces with nodes, and possibly finitely many branched minimal spheres and free boundary minimal disks.
We prove a local rigidity result for infinitesimally rigid capillary surfaces in some Riemannian $3$-manifolds with mean convex boundary. We also derive bounds on the genus, number of boundary components and area of any compact two-sided capillary minimal surface with low index under certain assumptions on the curvature of the ambient manifold and of its boundary.
The main goal of this article is to understand how the length spectrum of a random surface depends on its genus. Here a random surface means a surface obtained by randomly gluing together an even number of triangles carrying a fixed metric. Given suitable restrictions on the genus of the surface, we consider the number of appearances of fixed finite sets of combinatorial types of curves. Of any such set we determine the asymptotics of the probability distribution. It turns out that these distributions are independent of the genus in an appropriate sense. As an application of our results we stu…
In this article, we prove that if $(M,g)$ is a genus $G$ orientable surface with a single boundary component $S^1$, and if $(D,g_0)$ is a disc such that interior points are connected by unique geodesics and $$d_{(D,g_0)}(x,y) \geq d_{(M,g)}(x,y)$$ for all $x,y \in \partial M = \partial D$, then $$(1 + \frac{2 G}π) \textrm{Area}(M,g) \geq \textrm{Area}(D,g_0).$$
We consider a non-negative biminimal properly immersed submanifold $M$ (that is, a biminimal properly immersed submanifold with $λ\geq0$) in a complete Riemannian manifold $N$ with non-positive sectional curvature. Assume that the sectional curvature $K^N$ of $N$ satisfies $K^N\geq-L(1+{\rm dist}_N(\cdot, q_0)^2)^{\fracα{2}}$ for some $L>0,$ $2>α\geq 0$ and $q_0\in N$. Then, we prove that $M$ is minimal. As a corollary, we give that any biharmonic properly immersed submanifold in a hyperbolic space is minimal. These results give affirmative partial answers to the global version of generalized …
In this paper we consider a class of Einstein warped product semi-Riemannian manifolds $\widehat{M} = M^{n}\times_{f}N^{m}$ with $n\geq 3$ and $m\geq 2$. For $\widehat{M}$ with compact base and Ricci-flat fiber, we prove that $\widehat{M}$ is simply a Riemannian product space. Then, when the base $M$ is conformal to a pseudo-Euclidean space which is invariant under the action of a $(n-1)$-dimensional translation group, we classify all such spaces. Furthermore, we get new examples of complete Einstein warped products Riemannian manifolds.
Involutions without fixed points on hyperbolic closed Riemann surface are discussed. For an orientable surface $X$ of even genus with an arbitrary Riemannian metric $d$ admitting an involution $τ$, it is known that $\min_{p\in X}d(p,τ(p))$ is bounded by a constant which depends on the genus of $X$. The equivalent result is proved to be false in odd genus, and the optimal constant for hyperbolic Riemann surfaces is calculated in genus 2.
Let $M$ be a closed Riemannian surface of genus $g$. We construct a family of 1-cycles on $M$ that represents a non-trivial element of the k'th homology group of the space of cycles and such that the mass of each cycle is bounded above by $C \max\{\sqrt{k}, \sqrt{g}\} \sqrt{Area(M)}$. This result is optimal up to a multiplicative constant.
We provide a general contractibility criterion for subsets of Riemannian metrics on the disc. For instance, this result applies to the space of metrics that have positive Gauss curvature and make the boundary circle convex (or geodesic). The same conclusion is not known in any dimension $n\geq 3$, and (by analogy with the closed case) is actually expected to be false for many values of $n\geq 4$.
On a complete Riemannian manifold M with Ricci curvature satisfying $$\textrm{Ric}(\nabla r,\nabla r) \geq -Ar^2(\log r)^2(\log(\log r))^2...(\log^{k}r)^2$$ for $r\gg 1$, where A>0 is a constant, and r is the distance from an arbitrarily fixed point in M. we prove some Liouville-type theorems for a C^2 function $f:M\rightarrow \Bbb R$ satisfying $Δf\geq F(f)$ for a function $F:\Bbb R\rightarrow \Bbb R$.
The purpose of this paper is to prove that each of the following conditions is equivalent to that the foliation ${\cal F}$ is riemannian: 1) the lifted foliation ${\cal F}^{r}$ on the $r$-transverse bundle $ν^{r}{\cal F}$ is riemannian for an $r\geq 1$; 2) the foliation ${\cal F}_{0}^{r}$ on a slashed $ν_{\ast}^{r}{\cal F}$ is riemannian and vertically exact for an $r\geq 1$; 3) there is a positively admissible transverse lagrangian on a $ν_{\ast}^{r}{\cal F}$, for an $r\geq 1$. Analogous results have been proved previously for normal jet vector bundles.
The purpose of this Note is to prove that each of the following conditions is equivalent to that of the foliation ${\cal F}$ is riemannian: 1) the lifted foliation ${\cal F}^{r}$ on the bundle of $r$-transverse jets is riemannian for an $r\geq 1$; 2) the foliation ${\cal F}_{0}^{r}$ on the slashed ${\cal J}_{0}^{r}$ is riemannian and vertically exact for an $r\geq 1 $; 3) there is a positively admissible transverse lagrangian on ${\cal J}%_{0}^{r}E$, the $r$-transverse slashed jet bundle of a foliated bundle $% E\rightarrow M$, for an $r\geq 1$.
We show the existence of several new families of non-compact constant mean curvature surfaces: (i) singly-punctured surfaces of arbitrary genus $g \geq 1$, (ii) doubly-punctured tori, and (iii) doubly periodic surfaces with Delaunay ends.
We consider stable minimal surfaces of genus 1 in Euclidean space and in Riemannian manifolds. Under the condition of covering stability (all finite covers are stable) we show that a genus 1 finite total curvature minimal surface in $\mathbb R^n$ lies in an even dimensional affine subspace and is holomorphic for some constant orthogonal complex structure. For stable minimal tori in Riemannian manifolds we give an explicit bound on the systole in terms of a positive lower bound on the isotropic curvature. As an application we estimate the systole of noncyclic abelian subgroups of the fundamenta…
We show that the quantization of energy for Willmore spheres into closed Riemannian manifolds holds provided that the Willmore energy and the area are uniformly bounded. The analogous energy quantization result holds for Willmore surfaces of arbitrary genus, under the additional assumptions that the immersion maps weakly converge to a limiting (possibly branched, weak immersion) map from the same surface, and that the conformal structures stay in a compact domain of the moduli space.
We construct smooth bundles with base and fiber products of two spheres whose total spaces have non-vanishing $\hat{A}$-genus. We then use these bundles to locate non-trivial rational homotopy groups of spaces of Riemannian metrics with lower curvature bounds for all Spin-manifolds of dimension six or at least ten which admit such a metric and are a connected sum of some manifold and $S^n \times S^n$ or $S^n \times S^{n+1}$, respectively. We also construct manifolds $M$ whose spaces of Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature have homotopy groups that contain elements of infinite order …
In this paper, by using Schwarz rearrangement and isoperimetric inequalities, we prove comparison results for the solutions of Poisson equations on complete Riemannian manifolds with $Ric\geq (n-1)κ$, $\, κ\geq 0$, which extends the results in \cite{ANT-Talenti-a}. Furthermore, as applications of our comparison results, we obtain the Saint-Venant inequality and Bossel-Daners inequality for Robin Laplacian.
Given a Riemannian surface, we consider a naturally embedded graph which captures part of the topology and geometry of the surface. By studying this graph, we obtain results in three different directions. First, we find bounds on the lengths of homologically independent curves on closed Riemannian surfaces. As a consequence, we show that for any $λ\in (0,1)$ there exists a constant $C_λ$ such that every closed Riemannian surface of genus $g$ whose area is normalized at $4π(g-1)$ has at least $[λg]$ homologically independent loops of length at most $C_λ\log(g)$. This result extends Gromov's asy…
The first nontrivial eigenvalue of the Laplacian can be considered as a functional on the space of all Riemannian metrics of unit volume on a fixed surface. In this paper we prove that for the surface of genus 2 the supremum of this functional is equal to $16π$. This provides a positive answer to the conjecture by Jakobson, Levitin, Nadirashvili, Nigam and Polterovich.
Using the local picture of the degeneration of sequences of minimal surfaces developed by Chodosh, Ketover and Maximo we show that in any closed Riemannian 3-manifold $(M,g)$, the genus of an embedded CMC surface can be bounded only in terms of its index and area, independently of the value of its mean curvature. We also show that if $M$ has finite fundamental group, the genus and area of any non-minimal embedded CMC surface can be bounded in term of its index and a lower bound for its mean curvature.
We study the problem of recovering a function on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold from its integrals over all null geodesics in three geometries: pseudo-Riemannian products of Riemannian manifolds, Minkowski spaces and tori. We give proofs of uniqueness anc characterize non-uniqueness in different settings. Reconstruction is sometimes possible if the signature $(n_1,n_2)$ satisfies $n_1\geq1$ and $n_2\geq2$ or vice versa and always when $n_1,n_2\geq2$. The proofs are based on a Pestov identity adapted to null geodesics (product manifolds) and Fourier analysis (other geometries). The problem in a M…
A classical result by Cheng in 1976, improved later by Besson and Nadirashvili, says that the multiplicities of the eigenvalues of the Schrodinger operator with a smooth potential on a compact Riemannian surface M are bounded in terms of the eigenvalue index and the genus of M. We prove that these multiplicity bounds hold for an L^p-potential, where p>1. We also discuss similar multiplicity bounds for Laplace eigenvalues on singular Riemannian surfaces.
We prove two explicit bounds for the multiplicities of Steklov eigenvalues $σ_k$ on compact surfaces with boundary. One of the bounds depends only on the genus of a surface and the index $k$ of an eigenvalue, while the other depends as well on the number of boundary components. We also show that on any given smooth Riemannian surface with boundary, the multiplicities of Steklov eigenvalues $σ_k$ are uniformly bounded in $k$.
In this paper, we prove a classification theorem for the stable compact minimal submanifolds of the Riemannian product of an $m_1$-dimensional ($m_1\geq3$) hypersurface $M_1$ in the Euclidean space and any Riemannian manifold $M_2$, when the sectional curvature $K_{M_1}$ of $M_1$ satisfies $\frac{1}{\sqrt{m_1-1}}\leq K_{M_1}\leq 1.$ This gives a generalization to the results of F. Torralbo and F. Urbano [9], where they obtained a classification theorem for the stable minimal submanifolds of the Riemannian product of a sphere and any Riemannian manifold. In particular, when the ambient space is…
The authors give a short survey of previous results on $δ$-homogeneous Riemannian manifolds, forming a new proper subclass of geodesic orbit spaces with non-negative sectional curvature, which properly includes the class of all normal homogeneous Riemannian manifolds. As a continuation and an application of these results, they prove that the family of all compact simply connected indecomposable $δ$-homogeneous Riemannian manifolds with positive Euler characteristic, which are not normal homogeneous, consists exactly of all generalized flag manifolds $Sp(l)/U(1)\cdot Sp(l-1)=\mathbb{C}P^{2l-1}$…
We define the "sum of squares of the wavelengths" of a Riemannian surface (M,g) to be the regularized trace of the inverse of the Laplacian. We normalize by scaling and adding a constant, to obtain a "mass", which is scale invariant and vanishes at the round sphere. This is an anlaog for closed surfaces of the ADM mass from general relativity. We show that if M has positive genus then on each conformal class, the mass attains a negative minimum. For the minimizing metric, there is a sharp logarithmic Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality and a Moser-Trudinger-Onofri type inequality.
We discuss the cobordism type of spin manifolds with nonnegative sectional curvature. We show that in each dimension $4k \geq 12$, there are infinitely many cobordism types of simply connected and nonnegatively curved spin manifolds. Moreover, we raise and analyze a question about possible cobordism obstructions to nonnegative curvature.
Fix a number $g>1$, let $S$ be a close surface of genus $g$, and $Teich(S)$ be the Teichmüller space of $S$ endowed with the Weil-Petersson metric. In this paper we show that the Riemannian sectional curvature operator of $Teich(S)$ is non-positive definite. As an application we show that any twist harmonic map from rank-one hyperbolic spaces $H_{Q,m}=Sp(m,1)/Sp(m)\cdot Sp(1)$ or $H_{O,2}=F_{4}^{-20}/SO(9)$ into $Teich(S)$ is a constant.
It is well-known that the spectrum of a $\text{spin}^{\mathbb{C}}$ Dirac operator on a closed Riemannian $\text{spin}^{\mathbb{C}}$ manifold $M^{2k}$ of dimension $2k$ for $k \in \mathbb{N}$ is symmetric. In this article, we prove that over an odd-dimensional Riemannian product $M_{1}^{2p} \times M_{2}^{2q+1}$ with a product $\text{spin}^{\mathbb{C}}$ structure for $p \geq 1, q \geq 0$, the spectrum of a $\text{spin}^{\mathbb{C}}$ Dirac operator given by a product connection is symmetric if and only if either the $\text{spin}^{\mathbb{C}}$ Dirac spectrum of $M_{2}^{2q+1}$ is symmetric or $(e^{…
For any compact riemannian surface of genus three $(Σ,ds^2)$ Yang and Yau proved that the product of the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian $λ_1(ds^2)$ and the area $Area(ds^2)$ is bounded above by $24π$. In this paper we improve the result and we show that $λ_1(ds^2)Area(ds^2)\leq16(4-\sqrt{7})π\approx 21.668\,π$. About the sharpness of the bound, for the hyperbolic Klein quartic surface numerical computations give the value $\approx 21.414\,π$.
J.Eells and L. Lemaire introduced k-harmonic maps, and T. Ichiyama, J. Inoguchi and H.Urakawa showed the first variation formula. In this paper, we describe the ordinary differential equations of $3$-harmonic curves into a Riemannian manifold with constant sectional curvature, and show biharmonic curve is k-harmonic curve $(k\geq 2)$.
In this paper, we discuss complete minimal immersions in $\mathbb{R}^N$($N\geq4$) with finite total curvature and embedded planar ends. First, we prove nonexistence for the following cases: (1) genus 1 with 2 embedded planar ends, (2) genus $\neq4$, hyperelliptic with 2 embedded planar ends like the Lagrangian catenoid. Then we show the existence of embedded minimal spheres in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with 3 embedded planar ends. Moreover, we construct genus $g$ examples in $\mathbb{R}^4$ with $d$ embedded planar ends such that $g\geq 1$ and $g+2\leq d\leq 2g+1$. These examples include a family of embed…
Let $X$ be a compact Riemann surface of genus $\geq 2$ of constant negative curvature -1. An extremal disk is an embedded (resp. covering) disk of maximal (resp. minimal) radius. A surface containing an extremal disk is an {\em extremal surface}. This paper gives formulas enumerating extremal surfaces of genus $\geq 4$ up to isometry. We show also that the isometry group of an extremal surface is always cyclic of order 1, 2, 3 or 6.
I study Gromov-Hausdorff limits of complex curves endowed with singular flat metrics of constant diameter. I formulate a criterion that the limit is collapsed in terms of a certain piecewise affine weight function on the dual intersection complex of a semi-stable model of the degeneration introduced by Kontsevich and Soibelman. I describe the collapsed and non-collapsed limits, which are, respectively, metric graphs and finite collections of complex curves with flat metrics glued along finitely many points. I show that the collapsed limit of any positive genus can occur.
We give some rigidity theorems for an n$(\geq4)$-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold with harmonic Weyl curvature, positive scalar curvature and positive constant $σ_2$. Moreover, when $n=4,$ we prove that a 4-dimensional compact locally conformally flat Riemannian manifold with positive scalar curvature and positive constant $σ_2$ is isometric to a quotient of the round $\mathbb{S}^4$.
We study the existence of solutions of the non-linear differential equations on the compact Riemannian manifolds $(M^n,g), n\geq 2$, Δ_p u + a(x)u^{p-1} = λf(u,x), (E2) where $Δ_p$ is the $p-$laplacian, with $1<p<n$. The equation (E2) generalizes a equation considered by Aubin, where he has considered, a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, the differential equation ($p=2$) Δu + a(x)u = λf(u,x), (E1) where $a(x)$ is a $C^{\infty}$ function defined on $M$ and $f(u,x)$ is a $C^{\infty}$ function defined on $\mathbb{R}\times M$. We show that the equation (E2) has solution $(λ,u)$, where $λ\in \ma…
We consider a closed Riemannian manifold $(M^n ,g)$ of dimension $n\geq 3$ and study positive solutions of the equation $-Δ_g u + λu = λu^q$, with $λ>0$, $q>1$. If $M$ supports a proper isoparametric function with focal varieties $M_1$, $M_2$ of dimension $d_1 \geq d_2 $ we show that for any $q<\frac{ n-d_2+2 }{n - d_2 -2}$ the number of positive solutions of the equation $-Δ_g u + λu = λu^q$ tends to $\infty$ as $λ\rightarrow +\infty$. We apply this result to prove multiplicity results for positive solutions of critical and supercritical equations. In particular we prove multiplicity results …
Let $M$ be an $n$-dimensional compact connected manifold with boundary, $κ>0$ a constant and $1\leq q\leq n-1$ an integer. We prove that $M$ supports a Riemannian metric with the interior $q$-curvature $K_q\geq -qκ^2$ and the boundary $q$-curvature $Λ_q\geq qκ$, if and only if $M$ has the homotopy type of a CW complex with a finite number of cells with dimension $\leq (q-1)$. Moreover, any Riemannian manifold $M$ with sectional curvature $K\geq -κ^2$ and boundary principal curvature $Λ\geq κ$ is diffeomorphic to the standard closed $n$-ball.
Let $(T^k,h_k)=(S_{r_1}^1\times S_{r_2}^1 \times ... \times S_{r_k}^1, dt_1^2+dt_2^2+...+dt_k^2)$ be flat tori, $r_k\geq ...\geq r_2\geq r_1>0$ and $(\mathbb R^n,g_E)$ the Euclidean space with the flat metric. We compute the isoperimetric profile of $(T^2\times \mathbb R^n, h_2+g_E)$, $2\leq n\leq 5$, for small and big values of the volume. These computations give explicit lower bounds for the isoperimetric profile of $T^2\times\mathbb R^n$. We also note that similar estimates for $(T^k\times \mathbb R^n, h_k+g_E)$, $2\leq k\leq5$, $2\leq n\leq 7-k$, may be computed, provided estimates for $(T…
For each $k\geq 3$, we construct a 1-parameter family of complete properly Alexandrov-embedded minimal surfaces in the Riemannian product space $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ with genus $1$ and $k$ embedded ends asymptotic to vertical planes. We also obtain complete minimal surfaces with genus $1$ and $2k$ ends in the quotient of $\mathbb{H}^2\times\mathbb{R}$ by an arbitrary vertical translation. They all have dihedral symmetry with respect to $k$ vertical planes, as well as finite total curvature $-4kπ$. Finally, we also provide examples of complete properly Alexandrov-embedded minimal surfa…
This paper gives some examples of hypersurfaces $ϕ_t(M^n)$ evolving in time with speed determined by functions of the normal curvatures in an $(n+1)$-dimensional hyperbolic manifold; we emphasize the case of flow by harmonic mean curvature. The examples converge to a totally geodesic submanifold of any dimension from 1 to $n$, and include cases which exist for infinite time. Convergence to a point was studied by Andrews, and only occurs in finite time. For dimension $n=2,$ the destiny of any harmonic mean curvature flow is strongly influenced by the genus of the surface $M^2$.
We prove existence of isoperimetric regions for every volume in non-compact Riemannian $n$-manifolds $(M,g)$, $n\geq 2$, having Ricci curvature $Ric_g\geq (n-1) k_0 g$ and being locally asymptotic to the simply connected space form of constant sectional curvature $k_0$; moreover in case $k_0=0$ we show that the isoperimetric regions are indecomposable. We also discuss some physically and geometrically relevant examples. Finally, under assumptions on the scalar curvature we prove existence of isoperimetric regions of small volume.
We use the time real analyticity of Ricci flow proved by Kotschwar to extend a result in ~\cite{B}, namely, we prove that the Laplace spectra of negatively curved compact surfaces having same genus $γ\geq 2$, same area and same curvature bounds vary in a "controlled way", of which we give a quantitative estimate (Theorem 1.1 below). We also observe how said real analyticity can lead to unexpected conclusions about spectral properties of generic metrics on a compact surface of genus $γ\geq 2$ (Proposition 1.5 below).
Let $(M^m,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold $(m\geq 2)$ of positive scalar curvature and $(N^n,h)$ any closed manifold. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the second Yamabe constant and the second $N-$Yamabe constant of $(M\times N,g+th)$ as $t$ goes to $+\infty$. We obtain that $\lim_{t \to +\infty}Y^2(M\times N,[g+th])=2^{\frac{2}{m+n}}Y(M\times \re^n, [g+g_e]).$ If $n\geq 2$, we show the existence of nodal solutions of the Yamabe equation on $(M\times N,g+th)$ (provided $t$ large enough). When the scalar curvature of $(M,g)$ is constant, we prove that $\lim_{t \to +\infty}Y^2_N(M\times …
