Let $(T^k,h_k)=(S_{r_1}^1\times S_{r_2}^1 \times ... \times S_{r_k}^1, dt_1^2+dt_2^2+...+dt_k^2)$ be flat tori, $r_k\geq ...\geq r_2\geq r_1>0$ and $(\mathbb R^n,g_E)$ the Euclidean space with the flat metric. We compute the isoperimetric profile of $(T^2\times \mathbb R^n, h_2+g_E)$, $2\leq n\leq 5$, for small and big values of the volume. These computations give explicit lower bounds for the isoperimetric profile of $T^2\times\mathbb R^n$. We also note that similar estimates for $(T^k\times \mathbb R^n, h_k+g_E)$, $2\leq k\leq5$, $2\leq n\leq 7-k$, may be computed, provided estimates for $(T^{k-1}\times \mathbb R^{n+1}, h_{k-1}+g_E)$ exist. We compute this explicitly for $k=3$. We use symmetrization techniques for product manifolds, based on work of A. Ros and F. Morgan.
We show that smooth isoperimetric profiles are exceptional for real analytic Riemannian manifolds. For instance, under some extra assumption, this can happen only on topological spheres.
In the main theorem of this paper we treat the problem of existence of minimizers of the isoperimetric problem under the assumption of small volumes. Applications of the main theorem to asymptotic expansions of the isoperimetric problem are given.
Let G be a k-step Carnot group. We prove an isoperimetric-type inequality for compact C^2-smooth immersed hypersurfaces with boundary, involving the horizontal mean curvature of the hypersurface. This generalizes an inequality due to Michael and Simon, and Allard, independently. Some applications are discussed.
We study the problem of existence of isoperimetric regions for large volumes, in $C^0$-locally asymptotically Euclidean Riemannian manifolds with a finite number of $C^0$-asymptotically Schwarzschild ends. Then we give a geometric characterization of these isoperimetric regions, extending previous results contained in [EM13b], [EM13a], and [BE13]. Moreover strengthening a little bit the speed of convergence to the Schwarzschild metric we obtain existence of isoperimetric regions for all volumes for a class of manifolds that we named $C^0$-strongly asymptotic Schwarzschild, extending results of…
We show that, the solutions of the isoperimetric problem for small volumes are $C^{2,α}$-close to small spheres. On the way, we define a class of submanifolds called pseudo balls, defined by an equation weaker than constancy of mean curvature. We show that in a neighborhood of each point of a compact riemannian manifold, there is a unique family concentric pseudo balls which contains all the pseudo balls $C^{2,α}$-close to small spheres. This allows us to reduce the isoperimetric problem for small volumes to a variational problem in finite dimension.
We investigate the distribution of eigenvalues of the weighted Laplacian on closed weighted Riemannian manifolds of nonnegative Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature. We derive some universal inequalities among eigenvalues of the weighted Laplacian on such manifolds. These inequalities are quantitative versions of the previous theorem by the author with Shioya. We also study some geometric quantity, called multi-way isoperimetric constants, on such manifolds and obtain similar universal inequalities among them. Multi-way isoperimetric constants are generalizations of the Cheeger constant. Extending and …
We study, on a weighted Riemannian manifold of Ric$_{N} \geq K > 0$ for $N < -1$, when equality holds in the isoperimetric inequality. Our main theorem asserts that such a manifold is necessarily isometric to the warped product $\mathbb{R} \times_{\cosh(\sqrt{K/(1-N)}t)} Σ^{n-1}$ of hyperbolic nature, where $Σ^{n-1}$ is an $(n-1)$-dimensional manifold with lower weighted Ricci curvature bound and $\mathbb{R}$ is equipped with a hyperbolic cosine measure. This is a similar phenomenon to the equality condition of Poincaré inequality. Moreover, every isoperimetric minimizer set is isometric to a …
We prove some sharp isoperimetric type inequalities for domains with smooth boundary on Riemannian manifolds. For example, using generalized convexity, we show that among all domains with a lower bound $l$ for the cut distance and Ricci curvature lower bound $(n-1)k$, the geodesic ball of radius $l$ in the space form of curvature $k$ has the largest area-to-volume ratio. A similar but reversed inequality holds if we replace a lower bound on the cut distance by a lower bound of the mean curvature. As an application we show that $C^2$ isoperimetric domains in standard space forms are balls. Gene…
We prove that the isoperimetric profile of a convex domain $Ω$ with compact closure in a Riemannian manifold $(M^{n+1},g)$ satisfies a second order differential inequality which only depends on the dimension of the manifold and on a lower bound on the Ricci curvature of $Ω$. Regularity properties of the profile and topological consequences on isoperimetric regions arise naturally from this differential point of view. Moreover, by integrating the differential inequality we obtain sharp comparison theorems: not only can we derive an inequality which should be compared with Lévy-Gromov Inequality…
For compact Riemannian manifolds with convex boundary, B.White proved the following alternative: Either there is an isoperimetric inequality for minimal hypersurfaces or there exists a closed minimal hypersurface, possibly with a small singular set. There is the natural question if a similar result is true for submanifolds of higher codimension. Specifically, B.White asked if the non-existence of an isoperimetric inequality for k-varifolds implies the existence of a nonzero, stationary, integral k-varifold. We present examples showing that this is not true in codimension greater than two. The …
We provide an isoperimetric comparison theorem for small volumes in an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$ with strong bounded geometry, as in Definition $2.3$, involving the scalar curvature function. Namely in strong bounded geometry, if the supremum of scalar curvature function $S_g<n(n-1)k_0$ for some $k_0\in\mathbb{R}$, then for small volumes the isoperimetric profile of $(M^n,g)$ is less then or equal to the isoperimetric profile of $\mathbb{M}^n_{k_0}$ the complete simply connected space form of constant sectional curvature $k_0$. This work generalizes Theorem $2$ of [Dru02b] …
We study the Riemannian quantiative isoperimetric inequality. We show that direct analogue of the Euclidean quantitative isoperimetric inequality is--in general--false on a closed Riemannian manifold. In spite of this, we show that the inequality is true generically. Moreover, we show that a modified (but sharp) version of the quantitative isoperimetric inequality holds for a real analytic metric, using the Lojasiewicz-Simon inequality. A main novelty of our work is that in all our results we do not require any a priori knowledge on the structure/shape of the minimizers.
We prove existence of regions minimizing perimeter under a volume constraint in contact sub-Riemannian manifolds such that their quotient by the group of contact transformations preserving the sub-Riemannian metric is compact.
In general relativity, spatial light rays of static spherically symmetric spacetimes are geodesics of surfaces in Riemannian optical geometry. In this paper, we apply results on the isoperimetric problem to show that length-minimizing curves subject to an area constraint are circles, and discuss implications for the photon spheres of Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom, as well as continuous mass models solving the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation. Moreover, we derive an isoperimetric inequality for gravitational lensing in Riemannian optical geometry, using curve shortening flow and the Gaus…
For a complete noncompact connected Riemannian manifold with bounded geometry, we prove the existence of isoperimetric regions in a larger space obtained by adding finitely many limit manifolds at infinity. As one of many possible applications, we extend properties of the isoperimetric profile from compact manifolds to such noncompact manifolds.
Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold possessing a strictly convex Lipschitz continuous exhaustion function. We show that the isoperimetric profile of $M$ is a continuous and non-decreasing function. Particular cases are Hadamard manifolds and complete non-compact manifolds with strictly positive sectional curvatures.
We present a new and direct proof of the local Neumann isoperimetric inequality on convex domains of a Riemannian manifold with Ricci curvature bounded below.
We construct sequences of `expander manifolds' and we use them to show that there is a complete connected 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold with discontinuous isoperimetric profile, answering a question of Nardulli and Pansu. Using expander manifolds in dimension 3 we show that for any $ε, M>0$ there is a Riemannian 3-sphere $S$ of volume 1, such that any (not necessarily connected) surface separating $S$ in two regions of volume greater than $ε$, has area greater than $M$.
We obtain an estimate of the Cheeger isoperimetric constant in terms of the volume growth for a properly immersed submanifold in a Riemannian manifold which possesses at least one pole and sectional curvature bounded from above .
We show that there is a complete connected 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold with discontinuous isoperimetric profile, answering a question of Nardulli and Pansu.
In this paper we prove the existence of isoperimetric regions of any volume in Riemannian manifolds with Ricci bounded below assuming Gromov--Hausdorff asymptoticity to the suitable simply connected model of constant sectional curvature. The previous result is a consequence of a general structure theorem for perimeter-minimizing sequences of sets of fixed volume on noncollapsed Riemannian manifolds with a lower bound on the Ricci curvature. We show that, without assuming any further hypotheses on the asymptotic geometry, all the mass and the perimeter lost at infinity, if any, are recovered by…
We prove an Hersch's type isoperimetric inequality for the third positive eigenvalue on $\mathbb S^2$. Our method builds on the theory we developped to construct extremal metrics on Riemannian surfaces in conformal classes for any eigenvalue.
We prove existence of isoperimetric regions for every volume in non-compact Riemannian $n$-manifolds $(M,g)$, $n\geq 2$, having Ricci curvature $Ric_g\geq (n-1) k_0 g$ and being locally asymptotic to the simply connected space form of constant sectional curvature $k_0$; moreover in case $k_0=0$ we show that the isoperimetric regions are indecomposable. We also discuss some physically and geometrically relevant examples. Finally, under assumptions on the scalar curvature we prove existence of isoperimetric regions of small volume.
By using optimal mass transport theory we prove a sharp isoperimetric inequality in ${\sf CD} (0,N)$ metric measure spaces assuming an asymptotic volume growth at infinity. Our result extends recently proven isoperimetric inequalities for normed spaces and Riemannian manifolds to a nonsmooth framework. In the case of $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature, we outline an alternative proof of the rigidity result of S. Brendle (2021). As applications of the isoperimetric inequality, we establish Sobolev and Rayleigh-Faber-Krahn inequalities with explicit sharp const…
In a Riemannian manifold with a smooth positive function that weights the associated Hausdorff measures we study stable sets, i.e., second order minima of the weighted perimeter under variations preserving the weighted volume. By assuming local convexity of the boundary and certain behaviour of the Bakry-Émery-Ricci tensor we deduce rigidity properties for stable sets by using deformations constructed from parallel vector fields tangent to the boundary. As a consequence, we completely classify the stable sets in some Riemannian cylinders $Ω\times\mathbb{R}$ with product weights. Finally, we al…
In this paper we prove that isoperimetric sets in three-dimensional homogeneous spaces diffeomorphic to $\mathbb{R}^3$ are topological balls. We also prove that in three-dimensional homogeneous spheres isopermetric sets are either two-spheres or symmetric genus-one tori. We then apply our first result to the three-dimensional Heisenberg group $\mathsf{H}^1$, characterizing the isoperimetric sets and constants for a family of Riemannian adapted metrics. Using $Γ$-convergence of the perimeter functionals, we also settle an isoperimetric conjecture in $\mathsf{H}^1$ posed by P.Pansu.
We equip many non compact non simply connected surfaces with smooth Riemannian metrics whose isoperimetric profile is smooth, a highly non generic property. The computation of the profile is based on a calibration argument, a rearrangement argument, the Bol-Fiala curvature dependent inequality, together with new results on the profile of surfaces of revolution and some hardware know-how.
In this paper we study the relationship of hyperbolicity and (Cheeger) isoperimetric inequality in the context of Riemannian manifolds and graphs. We characterize the hyperbolic manifolds and graphs (with bounded local geometry) verifying this isoperimetric inequality, in terms of their Gromov boundary. Furthermore, we characterize the trees with isoperimetric inequality (without any hypothesis). As an application of our results, we obtain the solvability of the Dirichlet problem at infinity for these Riemannian manifolds and graphs, and that the Martin boundary is homeomorphic to the Gromov b…
Given closed Riemannian manifold $(M^n, g)$ of positive Ricci curvature $Ricci(g) \geq (n-1)g$ we study isoperimetric regions on the spherical cone over $M$. When $g$ is Einstein we use this to compute the Yamabe constant of $(M \times {\bf R}, g + dt^2)$ and so to obtain lower bounds for the Yamabe invariant of $M\times S^1$.
We show that the isoperimetric profile $h_{g(t)}(ξ)$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ is jointly continuous when metrics $g(t)$ vary continuously. We also show that, when $M$ is a compact surface and $g(t)$ evolves under normalized Ricci flow, $h^2_{g(t)}(ξ)$ is uniform Lipschitz continuous and hence $h_{g(t)}(ξ)$ is uniform locally Lipschitz continuous.
We study the isoperimetric structure of Riemannian manifolds that are asymptotic to cones with non-negative Ricci curvature. Specifically, we generalize to this setting the seminal results of G. Huisken and S.-T. Yau on the existence of a canonical foliation by volume preserving stable constant mean curvature surfaces at infinity of asymptotically flat manifolds as well as the results of the second-named author with S. Brendle and J. Metzger on the isoperimetric structure of asymptotically flat manifolds. We also include an observation on the isoperimetric cone angle of such manifolds. This re…
Let $(M,g)$ be a complete Riemannian $3$-manifold asymptotic to Schwarzschild-anti-deSitter and with scalar curvature $R \geq - 6$. Building on work of A.~Neves and G.~Tian and of the first-named author, we show that the leaves of the canonical foliation of $(M, g)$ are the unique solutions of the isoperimetric problem for their area. The assumption $R \geq -6$ is necessary. This is the first characterization result for large isoperimetric regions in the asymptotically hyperbolic setting that does not assume exact rotational symmetry at infinity.
Let $\,(M,g)\,$ be a $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold and $\,Ω\,$ be any compact connected domain in $\,M$. We study the problem of finding the {\em maxima} of the functional $\, {\mathcal E} (Ω)\,$ (known as {\em torsional rigidity} associated to $Ω$) among all domains of prescribed volume $v$. Our results show that for a given Riemannian manifold which is strictly isoperimetric at one of its points the maximum of such functional is realized by the geodesic ball centered at this point. More generally, we prove estimates for the functional $\, {\mathcal E} (Ω)\,$ by comparison with symmetri…
The notion of strictly outward minimising hull is investigated for open sets of finite perimeter sitting inside a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold. Under natural geometric assumptions on the ambient manifold, the strictly outward minimising hull $Ω^*$ of a set $Ω$ is characterised as a maximal volume solution of the least area problem with obstacle, where the obstacle is the set itself. In the case where $Ω$ has $\mathscr{C}^{1, α}$-boundary, the area of $\partial Ω^*$ is recovered as the limit of the $p$-capacities of $Ω$, as $p \to 1^+$. Finally, building on the existence of strictly …
In the context of sub-Riemannian Heisenberg groups Hn, n \geq 1, we shall study Isoperimetric Profiles, which are closed compact hypersurfaces having constant horizontal mean curvature, very similar to ellipsoids. Our main goal is to study the stability of Isoperimetric Profiles.
In this paper, we study contact forms on the three- dimensional Heisenberg manifold with its standard CR structure. We discover that the $Q'$-curvature, introduced by Branson, Fontana and Morpurgo [BFM13] on the CR three-sphere and then generalized to any pseudo-Einstein CR three manifold by Case and Yang [CY95], controls the isoperimetric inequality on such a CR-manifold. To show this, we first prove that the nonnegative Webster curvature at infinity deduces that the metric is normal, which is analogous to the behavior on a Riemannian four-manifold.
In this note, we show that there is some counterexample for isoperimetric inequality if the condition $(ϕ')^2-ϕ"ϕ\leq 1$ does not hold in warped product space.
For any closed Riemannian manifold $X$ we prove that large isoperimetric regions in $X\times{\mathbb R}^n$ are of the form $X\times$(Euclidean ball). We prove that if $X$ has non-negative Ricci curvature then the only soap bubbles enclosing a large volume are the products $X\times$(Euclidean sphere). We give an example of a surface $X$, with Gaussian curvature negative somewhere, such that the product $X\times{\mathbb R}$ contains stable soap bubbles of arbitrarily large enclosed volume which do not even project surjectively onto the $X$ factor.
We prove some isoperimetric type inequalities in warped product manifolds, or more generally, multiply warped product manifolds. We then relate them to inequalities involving the higher order mean-curvature integrals. We also apply our results to obtain sharp eigenvalue estimates and some sharp geometric inequalities in space forms.
We investigate the minimal and isoperimetric surface problems in a large class of sub-Riemannian manifolds, the so-called Vertically Rigid spaces. We construct an adapted connection for such spaces and, using the variational tools of Bryant, Griffiths and Grossman, derive succinct forms of the Euler-Lagrange equations for critical points for the associated variational problems. Using the Euler-Lagrange equations, we show that minimal and isoperimetric surfaces satisfy a constant horizontal mean curvature conditions away from characteristic points. Moreover, we use the formalism to construct a …
Let $(M, g)$ be an asymptotically flat Riemannian $3$-manifold with non-negative scalar curvature and positive mass. We show that each leaf of the canonical foliation through stable constant mean curvature surfaces of the end of $(M, g)$ is uniquely isoperimetric for the volume it encloses.
Given a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ without boundary, we show that large isoperimetric regions in $M\times\mathbb{R}^k$ are tubular neighborhoods of $M\times\{x\}$, with $x\in\mathbb{R}^k$.
By adapting some ideas of M. Ledoux \cite{ledoux2}, \cite{ledoux-stflour} and \cite{Led} to a sub-Riemannian framework we study Sobolev, Poincaré and isoperimetric inequalities associated to subelliptic diffusion operators that satisfy the generalized curvature dimension inequality that was introduced by F. Baudoin and N. Garofalo in \cite{Bau2}. Our results apply in particular on all CR Sasakian manifolds whose horizontal Webster-Tanaka-Ricci curvature is non negative, all Carnot groups with step two, and wide subclasses of principal bundles over Riemannian manifolds whose Ricci curvature is …
In this paper we prove a sub-Riemannian version of the classical Santaló formula: a result in integral geometry that describes the intrinsic Liouville measure on the unit cotangent bundle in terms of the geodesic flow. Our construction works under quite general assumptions, satisfied by any sub-Riemannian structure associated with a Riemannian foliation with totally geodesic leaves (e.g. CR and QC manifolds with symmetries), any Carnot group, and some non-equiregular structures such as the Martinet one. A key ingredient is a "reduction procedure" that allows to consider only a simple subset of…
In this paper we first prove some linear isoperimetric inequalities for submanifolds in the de Sitter-Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom manifolds. Moreover, the equality is attained. Next, we prove some monotonicity formulas for submanifolds with bounded mean curvature vector in warped product manifolds and, as consequences, we give lower bound estimates for the volume of these submanifolds in terms of the warping function. We conclude the paper with an isoperimetric inequality for minimal surfaces.
Let $(M,g)$ be a complete non-compact Riemannian manifold together with a function $e^h$, which weights the Hausdorff measures associated to the Riemannian metric. In this work we assume lower or upper radial bounds on some weighted or unweighted curvatures of $M$ to deduce comparisons for the weighted isoperimetric quotient and the weighted capacity of metric balls in $M$ centered at a point $o\in M$. As a consequence, we obtain parabolicity and hyperbolicity criteria for weighted manifolds generalizing previous ones. A basic tool in our study is the analysis of the weighted Laplacian of the …
Given a compact Riemannian manifold with density $M$ without boundary and the real line $\mathbb{R}$ with constant density, we prove that isoperimetric regions of large volume in $M\times\mathbb{R}$ with the product density are slabs of the form $M\times [a,b]$. We previously prove, as a necessary step, the existence of isoperimetric regions in any manifold of density where a subgroup of the group of transformations preserving weighted perimeter and volume acts cocompactly.
In this work we consider a question in the calculus of variations motivated by riemannian geometry, the isoperimetric problem. We show that solutions to the isoperimetric problem, close in the flat norm to a smooth submanifold, are themselves smooth and $C^{2,α}$-close to the given sub manifold. We show also a version with variable metric on the manifold. The techniques used are, among other, the standards outils of linear elliptic analysis and comparison theorems of riemannian geometry, Allard's regularity theorem for minimizing varifolds, the isometric immersion theorem of Nash and a paramet…
