We explicitly describe the defining relations for simple Lie algebra of vector fields with polynomial coefficients and its subalgebras of divergence free, hamiltonian and contact vector fields, and for the Poisson algebra (realized on polynomials). We consider generators of these Lie algebras corresponding to the systems of simple roots associated with the standard grading of these algebras. (These systems of simple roots are distinguished in the sense of Penkov and Serganova.
We determine approximations to the decomposition matrices for unipotent $\ell$-blocks of several series of finite reductive groups of classical and exceptional type over $\FF_q$ of low rank in non-defining good characteristic~$\ell$.
In this paper we verify Navarro's refinement of the McKay conjecture for quasi-simple groups of Lie type in their defining characteristic. Navarro's refinement takes into account the action of specific Galois automorphisms on the characters present in the McKay conjecture. Our proof of this case of the conjecture relies on a character correspondence constructed by Maslowski. Building on this we verify the inductive condition for Navarro's refinement for most groups of Lie type in defining characteristic.
The McKay--Navarro conjecture is a refinement of the McKay conjecture that additionally takes the action of some Galois automorphisms into account. We verify the inductive McKay--Navarro condition in the defining characteristic for the finite groups of Lie type with exceptional graph automorphisms, the Suzuki and Ree groups, $\mathsf{B}_n(2)$ ($n \geq 2$), and the groups of Lie type with non-generic Schur multiplier. This completes the verification of the inductive McKay--Navarro condition for the finite groups of Lie type in their defining characteristic.
Let $G$ be a finite group of Lie type and $\ell$ be a prime which is not equal to the defining characteristic of $G$. In this note we discuss some open problems concerning the $\ell$-modular irreducible representations of $G$. We also establish a strengthening of the results in [13] on the classification of the $\ell$-modular principal series representations of $G$.
The analogs of Chevalley generators are offered for simple (and close to them) Z-graded complex Lie algebras and Lie superalgebras of polynomial growth without Cartan matrix. We show how to derive the defining relations between these generators and explicitly write them for a "most natural" ("distinguished" in terms of Penkov and Serganova) system of simple roots. The results are given mainly for Lie superalgebras whose component of degree zero is a Lie algebra (other cases being left to the reader). Observe presentations of exceptional Lie superalgebras and Lie superalgebras of hamiltonian ve…
We give a lower bound of the Loewy length of the projective cover of the trivial module for the group algebra $kG$ of a finite group $G$ of Lie type defined over a finite field of odd characteristic $p$, where $k$ is an arbitrary field of characteristic $p$; the proof uses Auslander-Reiten theory.
This article discusses the modular representation theory of finite groups of Lie type from the viewpoint of Broue's abelian defect group conjecture. We discuss both the defining characteristic case, the inspiration for Alperin's weight conjecture, and the non-defining case, the inspiration for Broue's conjecture. The modular representation theory of general finite groups is conjectured to behave both like that of finite groups of Lie type in defining characteristic, and in non-defining characteristic, to a large extent. The expected behaviour of modular representation theory of finite groups o…
We completely describe presentations of Lie superalgebras with Cartan matrix if they are simple Z-graded of polynomial growth. Such matrices can be neither integer nor symmetrizable. There are non-Serre relations encountered. In certain cases there are infinitely many relations. Our results are applicable to the Lie algebras with the same Cartan matrices as the Lie superalgebras considered.
In this paper, we give a finite number of defining relations satisfied by a finite number of generators for the elliptic Lie algebras and superalgebras ${\frak g}_R$ with rank $\geq 2$. Here the $R$'s denote the reduced and non-reduced elliptic root systems with rank $\geq 2$. We also show that if ${\cal L}$ is an extended affine Lie algebra (EALA) whose non-isotropic roots form the $R$, then there exists a natural homomorphism ${\cal F}:{\frak g}_R \to{\cal L}$, which also give a universal central extension (UCE) surjective map from $[{\frak g}_R,{\frak g}_R]$ to the core of ${\cal L}$. (More…
Let G be a finite group of Lie type, defined over a field k of characteristic p > 0. We find explicit bounds for the dimension of the first cohomology group for G with coefficients in a simple kG-module. We proceed by bounding the number of composition factors of Weyl modules for simple algebraic groups independently of p and using this to deduce bounds for the 1-cohomology of simple algebraic groups. Finally, we use this to obtain estimations for the growth rate of the maximum dimension {γ_l} of these 1-cohomology groups over all groups of Lie type of rank l. We find that log γ_l is O(l^3 log…
We reformulate the inductive McKay condition, from Isaacs-Malle-Navarro, and apply the new criterion to simple groups of Lie type, when the prime is the defining characteristic p. Thereby we make use of a recent result of Maslowski. This proves that these simple group satisfy the inductive McKay condition for p. In the non simply-laced types and non-classical types this reproves earlier results by Brunat and Brunat-Himstedt.
In this paper, the correspondence between the finite dimensional representations of a simple Lie algebra and their characteristic polynomials is established, and a monoid structure on these characteristic polynomials is constructed. Furthermore, the characteristic polynomials of sl(2, C) on some classical simple Lie algebras through adjoint representations are studied, and we present some results of Borel subalgebras and parabolic subalgebras of simple Lie algebras through characteristic polynomials.
For the orthogonal Lie algebra O(2n+1), in addition to the conventional set of orthogonal polynomials, another set is produced with the help of the Lie superalgebra OSP(1|2n). Difficulties related with expression of Dyson's constant for the Lie superalgebras are discussed.
Using the skew-symmetry of the differential operators and multiplication operators in the canonical representations of finite-dimensional classical Lie algebras, we obtain some noncanonical polynomial representations of the classical Lie algebras. The representation spaces of all polynomials are decomposed into irreducible submodules, which are infinite-dimensional. Bases for the irreducible submodules are constructed. In particular, we obtain some new infinite-dimensional irreducible modules of symplectic Lie algebras that are not of highest weight type.
We compute the characteristic polynomials of affine Cartan, adjacency matrices and Coxeter polynomials of the associated Coxeter system using Chebyshev polynomials. We give explicit factorization of these polynomials as products of cyclotomic polynomials. Finally, we present several different methods of obtaining the exponents and Coxeter number for affine Lie algebras. In particular we compute the exponents and Coxeter number for each conjugacy class in the case of $A_n^{(1)}$.
This document is the first iteration of an attempt to collate information about small-rank groups of Lie type over small fields, and their representation theory over the defining field. This information is important in the author's work on subgroup structure of exceptional groups of Lie type. The most important information in that work is information about $\mathrm{Ext}^1$ between simple modules, and so in Version 1 of this document, that data is almost all of the data available. In addition, a lot of information about the dimensions of the simple and Weyl modules is included. More generally, …
In this paper, various polynomial representations of strange classical Lie superalgebras are investigated. It turns out that the representations for the algebras of type P are indecomposable, and we obtain the composition series of the underlying modules. As modules of the algebras of type Q, the polynomial algebras are decomposed into a direct sum of irreducible submodules.
Let $G$ be a finite group of Lie type defined in characteristic $p$, and let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $r>0$. We will assume that $r \neq p$ (so, we are in the non-defining characteristic case). Let $V$ be a finite-dimensional irreducible left $kG$-module. In 2011, Guralnick and Tiep found bounds on the dimension of $H^1(G,V)$ in non-defining characteristic, which are independent of $V$. The aim of this paper is to generalize the work of Gurlanick and Tiep. We assume that $G$ is split and use methods of modular Harish-Chandra theory to find bounds on the dimension …
In this paper we determine the torsion free rank of the group of endotrivial modules for any finite group of Lie type, in both defining and non-defining characteristic. On our way to proving this, we classify the maximal rank $2$ elementary abelian $\ell$-subgroups in any finite group of Lie type, for any prime $\ell$, which may be of independent interest.
In this paper, we generalize a result by Berman and Billig on weight modules over Lie algebras with polynomial multiplication. More precisely, we show that a highest weight module with an exp-polynomial ``highest weight'' has finite dimensional weight spaces. We also get a class of irreducible weight modules with finite dimensional weight spaces over generalized Virasoro algebras which do not occur over the classical Virasoro algebra.
Orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras are fundamental symmetries in modern physics, such as massive supergravity. However, their representations are far from being thoroughly understood. In the present paper, we completely determine the structure of their various supersymmetric polynomial representations obtained by swapping bosonic multiplication operators and differential operators in the canonical supersymmetric polynomial representations. In particular, we obtain certain new infinite-dimensional irreducible representations and new composition series of indecomposable representations for these …
We give a uniform interpretation of the classical continuous Chebyshev's and Hahn's orthogonal polynomials of discrete variable in terms of Feigin's Lie algebra gl(N), where N is any complex number. One can similarly interpret Chebyshev's and Hahn's q-polynomials and introduce orthogonal polynomials corresponding to Lie superlagebras. We also describe the real forms of gl(N), quasi-finite modules over gl(N), and conditions for unitarity of the quasi-finite modules. Analogs of tensors over gl(N) are also introduced.
Let ${\mathcal W}_n$ be the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields. We classify simple weight ${\mathcal W}_n$-modules $M$ with finite weight multiplicities. We prove that every such nontrivial module $M$ is either a tensor module or the unique simple submodule in a tensor module associated with the de Rham complex on $\mathbb C^n$.
The notion of defining relations is well-defined for any nilpotent Lie algebra. Therefore a conventional way to present a simple Lie algebra G is by splitting it into the direct sum of a commutative Cartan subalgebra and two maximal nilpotent subalgebras (positive and negative) and together the generators of both these nilpotent subalgebras together generate G. Though there are many relations between these generators, they are neat (Serre relations). It is possible to determine the relations for generators of different type, e.g, with the principal embeddings of sl(2) into G one can associate …
Recently Alberto Elduque listed all simple and graded modulo 2 finite dimensional Lie algebras and superalgebras whose odd component is the spinor representation of the orthogonal Lie algebra equal to the even component, and discovered one exceptional such Lie superalgebra in characteristic 5. For this Lie superalgebra all inequivalent Cartan matrices (in other words, inequivalent systems of simple roots) are listed together with defining relations between analogs of its Chevalley generators.
In this paper an integral transform between spaces of nonstandard test functions on the affine space of dimension n is constructed. The integral transform satisfies a summation formula of Poisson type, which is derived from an analogue of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula for the Lie algebra of n by n matrices.
For a field $\mathbb{F}$, let $L_k(\mathbb{F})$ be the Lie algebra of derivations $f(t)\frac{d}{dt}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{F}[t]$, where $f(t)$ is a polynomial of degree $\geqslant k$. For any $k\geqslant -1$, we present a basis of the space of the cohomology with finite-dimensional support of the Lie algebra $L_k(\mathbb{F})$ with coefficients in the trivial module $\mathbb{F}$ for the case where ${\rm char}(\mathbb{F})=2$. The main result obtained is an analog of the famous Goncharova's Theorem for the case ${\rm char}(\mathbb{F})=0$ and $k\geqslant 1$.
The motivation comes from boson fermion correspondence. This article shows for each fermionic root there is correspondence a bosonic root, as a result we get for each Dynkin diagram of Lie Superalgebra a corresponding flip Dynkin Superdiagram. This article construct all the filp Dynkin Superdiagrams of Lie superalgebras(LS). This can create non conjugate classes Borel subalgebra (subsuperalgebras) or non isomorphic Dynkin diagrams of LS using \inδsequences. We have got the defining relations for the both the Dynkin diagrams and flip Dynkin diagrams.
The ideals of the Lie algebras of unitriangular polynomial derivations are classified. An isomorphism criterion is given for the Lie factor algebras of the Lie algebras of unitriangular polynomial derivations.
We give an analog of a Chevalley-Serre presentation for the Lie superalgebras W(n) and S(n) of Cartan type. These are part of a wider class of Lie superalgebras, the so-called tensor hierarchy algebras, denoted W(g) and S(g), where g denotes the Kac-Moody algebra A_r, D_r or E_r. Then W(A_{n-1}) and S(A_{n-1}) are the Lie superalgebras W(n) and S(n). The algebras W(g) and S(g) are constructed from the Dynkin diagram of the Borcherds-Kac-Moody superalgebras B(g) obtained by adding a single grey node (representing an odd null root) to the Dynkin diagram of g. We redefine the algebras W(A_r) and …
We construct characteristic identities for the split (polarized) Casimir operators of the simple Lie algebras in defining (minimal fundamental) and adjoint representations. By means of these characteristic identities, for all simple Lie algebras we derive explicit formulae for invariant projectors onto irreducible subrepresentations in T^{\otimes 2} in two cases, when T is the defining and the adjoint representation. In the case when T is the defining representation, these projectors and the split Casimir operator are used to explicitly write down invariant solutions of the Yang-Baxter equatio…
Polynomials in this paper are defined starting from a compact semisimple Lie group. A known classification of maximal, semisimple subgroups of simple Lie groups is used to select the cases to be considered here. A general method is presented and all the cases of rank not greater then 3 are explicitly studied. We derive the polynomials of simple Lie groups B_3 and C_3 as they are not available elsewhere. The results point to far reaching Lie theoretical connections to the theory of multivariable orthogonal polynomials.
In this work, we introduce a new concept which is obtained by defining a new compatibility condition between Lie algebras and Lie coalgebras. With this terminology, we describe the interrelation between the Killing form and the adjoint representation in a new perspective.
Let L be a restricted Lie superalgebra with its enveloping algebra u(L) over a field F of characteristic p>2. A polynomial identity is called non-matrix if it is not satisfied by the algebra of 2\times 2 matrices over F. We characterize L when u(L) satisfies a non-matrix polynomial identity. In particular, we characterize L when u(L) is Lie solvable, Lie nilpotent, or Lie super-nilpotent.
Chevalley's theorem states that for any simple finite dimensional Lie algebra G (1) the restriction homomorphism of the algebra of polynomials on G onto the Cartan subalgebra H induces an isomorphism between the algebra of G-invariant polynomials on G with the algebra of W-invariant polynomals on H, where W is the Weyl group of G, (2) each G-invariant polynomial is a linear combination of the powers of traces tr r(x), where r is a finite dimensional representation of G. None of these facts is necessarily true for simple Lie superalgebras. We reformulate Chevalley's theorem so as to embrace Lie…
We completely determine the minimal polynomial of an arbitrary simple highest weight module $L(λ)$ over a complex classical Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}\subseteq\mathfrak{gl}_N$ relative to its defining module $π=\mathbb{C}^{N}$. These results are applied to ordering on primitive ideals and algebraic properties of Howe duality correspondence.
A survey of the theory of Kac polynomials for quivers and for curves. In particular, we describe the representation-theoretic meaning of Kac polynomials in terms of Hall algebras, and the geometric meaning of Kac polynomials in relation to the geometry of moduli spaces of representations of quivers or vector bundles on smooth projective curves. We end with some heuristics concerning a family of infinite-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}^2$-graded Lie algebras attached to curves of a fixed genus (over a finite field), whose 'Cartan datum' encodes the dimension of the spaces of absolutely cuspidal functio…
We give a representation--theoretic interpretation of recent discovered coupled soliton equations using vertex operators construction of affinization of not simple but quadratic Lie algebras. In this setup we are able to obtain new integrable hierarchies coupled to each Drinfeld--Sokolov of $A$, $B$, $C$, $D$ hierarchies and to construct their soliton solutions.
In 1971 Griffiths used a generating function to define polynomials in d variables orthogonal with respect to the multinomial distribution. The polynomials possess a duality between the discrete variables and the degree indices. In 2004 Mizukawa and Tanaka related these polynomials to character algebras and the Gelfand hypergeometric series. Using this approach they clarified the duality and obtained a new proof of the orthogonality. In the present paper, we interpret these polynomials within the context of the Lie algebra sl_{d+1}. Our approach yields yet another proof of the orthogonality. It…
We first present a filtration on the ring L of Laurent polynomials such that the direct sum decomposition of its associated graded ring gr L agrees with the direct sum decomposition of gr L, as a module over the complex general linear Lie algebra gl(n), into its simple submodules. Next, generalizing the simple modules occurring in gr L, we give some explicit constructions of weight multiplicity-free irreducible representations of gl(n).
We use the machinery of categorified Jones-Wenzl projectors to construct a categorification of a type A Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of oriented framed tangles where each strand is labeled by an arbitrary finite-dimensional representation. As a special case, we obtain a categorification of the coloured Jones polynomial of links.
The classical Schur polynomials form a natural basis for the ring of symmetric polynomials, and have geometric significance since they represent the Schubert classes in the cohomology ring of Grassmannians. Moreover, these polynomials enjoy rich combinatorial properties. In the last decade, an exact analogue of this picture has emerged in the symplectic and orthogonal Lie types, with the Schur polynomials replaced by the theta and eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author. This expository paper gives an overview of what is known to date about this correspondence, with examples.
We determine the image of the braid groups inside the Temperley-Lieb algebras, defined over finite field, in the semisimple case, and for suitably large (but controlable) order of the defining (quantum) parameter. We also prove that, under natural conditions on this parameter, the representations of the Hecke algebras over a finite field are unitary for the action of the braid groups.
We develop a powerful framework to calculate expectation values of polynomials and moments on compact Lie groups based on elementary representation-theoretic arguments and an integration by parts formula. In the setting of lattice gauge theory, we generalize expectation value formulas for products of Wilson loops by Chatterjee and Jafarov to arbitrary compact Lie groups, and study explicit examples for many classical compact Lie groups and the exceptional Lie group $G_2$. Extending classical results by Collins and Lévy, we use our framework to derive expectation value formulas of polynomials o…
Recursive algebraic construction of two infinite families of polynomials in $n$ variables is proposed as a uniform method applicable to every semisimple Lie group of rank $n$. Its result recognizes Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kind as the special case of the simple group of type $A_1$. The obtained not Laurent-type polynomials are proved to be equivalent to the partial cases of the Macdonald symmetric polynomials. Basic relation between the polynomials and their properties follow from the corresponding properties of the orbit functions, namely the orthogonality and discretizat…
Recently we have started a program to describe the action of Lie algebras associated with Dynkin-type diagrams on generic Verma modules in terms of polynomial vector fields. In this paper we explain that the results for the classical ABCD series of Lie algebras coincide with the more conventional approach, based on the knowledge of the entire algebra, not only the simple roots. We apply the coset description, starting with a large representation and then reducing it with the help of the algebra, commuting with the original one. The irreducible representations are then obtained by gauge fixing …
