Using the skew-symmetry of the differential operators and multiplication operators in the canonical representations of finite-dimensional classical Lie algebras, we obtain some noncanonical polynomial representations of the classical Lie algebras. The representation spaces of all polynomials are decomposed into irreducible submodules, which are infinite-dimensional. Bases for the irreducible submodules are constructed. In particular, we obtain some new infinite-dimensional irreducible modules of symplectic Lie algebras that are not of highest weight type.
We study two-parameter oscillator variations of the classical theorem on harmonic polynomials, associated with noncanonical oscillator representations of sl(n) and o(n). We find the condition when the homogeneous solution spaces of the variated Laplace equation are irreducible modules of the concerned algebras and the homogeneous subspaces are direct sums of the images of these solution subspaces under the powers of the dual differential operator. This establishes a local (sl(2),sl(n)) and (sl(2),o(n)) Howe duality, respectively. In generic case, the obtained irreducible o(n)-modules are infin…
In this paper, the correspondence between the finite dimensional representations of a simple Lie algebra and their characteristic polynomials is established, and a monoid structure on these characteristic polynomials is constructed. Furthermore, the characteristic polynomials of sl(2, C) on some classical simple Lie algebras through adjoint representations are studied, and we present some results of Borel subalgebras and parabolic subalgebras of simple Lie algebras through characteristic polynomials.
For the orthogonal Lie algebra O(2n+1), in addition to the conventional set of orthogonal polynomials, another set is produced with the help of the Lie superalgebra OSP(1|2n). Difficulties related with expression of Dyson's constant for the Lie superalgebras are discussed.
We compute the characteristic polynomials of affine Cartan, adjacency matrices and Coxeter polynomials of the associated Coxeter system using Chebyshev polynomials. We give explicit factorization of these polynomials as products of cyclotomic polynomials. Finally, we present several different methods of obtaining the exponents and Coxeter number for affine Lie algebras. In particular we compute the exponents and Coxeter number for each conjugacy class in the case of $A_n^{(1)}$.
In this paper, various polynomial representations of strange classical Lie superalgebras are investigated. It turns out that the representations for the algebras of type P are indecomposable, and we obtain the composition series of the underlying modules. As modules of the algebras of type Q, the polynomial algebras are decomposed into a direct sum of irreducible submodules.
In this paper, we generalize a result by Berman and Billig on weight modules over Lie algebras with polynomial multiplication. More precisely, we show that a highest weight module with an exp-polynomial ``highest weight'' has finite dimensional weight spaces. We also get a class of irreducible weight modules with finite dimensional weight spaces over generalized Virasoro algebras which do not occur over the classical Virasoro algebra.
We explicitly describe the defining relations for simple Lie algebra of vector fields with polynomial coefficients and its subalgebras of divergence free, hamiltonian and contact vector fields, and for the Poisson algebra (realized on polynomials). We consider generators of these Lie algebras corresponding to the systems of simple roots associated with the standard grading of these algebras. (These systems of simple roots are distinguished in the sense of Penkov and Serganova.
Orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras are fundamental symmetries in modern physics, such as massive supergravity. However, their representations are far from being thoroughly understood. In the present paper, we completely determine the structure of their various supersymmetric polynomial representations obtained by swapping bosonic multiplication operators and differential operators in the canonical supersymmetric polynomial representations. In particular, we obtain certain new infinite-dimensional irreducible representations and new composition series of indecomposable representations for these …
We give a uniform interpretation of the classical continuous Chebyshev's and Hahn's orthogonal polynomials of discrete variable in terms of Feigin's Lie algebra gl(N), where N is any complex number. One can similarly interpret Chebyshev's and Hahn's q-polynomials and introduce orthogonal polynomials corresponding to Lie superlagebras. We also describe the real forms of gl(N), quasi-finite modules over gl(N), and conditions for unitarity of the quasi-finite modules. Analogs of tensors over gl(N) are also introduced.
Let ${\mathcal W}_n$ be the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields. We classify simple weight ${\mathcal W}_n$-modules $M$ with finite weight multiplicities. We prove that every such nontrivial module $M$ is either a tensor module or the unique simple submodule in a tensor module associated with the de Rham complex on $\mathbb C^n$.
In this paper an integral transform between spaces of nonstandard test functions on the affine space of dimension n is constructed. The integral transform satisfies a summation formula of Poisson type, which is derived from an analogue of the Arthur-Selberg trace formula for the Lie algebra of n by n matrices.
For a field $\mathbb{F}$, let $L_k(\mathbb{F})$ be the Lie algebra of derivations $f(t)\frac{d}{dt}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{F}[t]$, where $f(t)$ is a polynomial of degree $\geqslant k$. For any $k\geqslant -1$, we present a basis of the space of the cohomology with finite-dimensional support of the Lie algebra $L_k(\mathbb{F})$ with coefficients in the trivial module $\mathbb{F}$ for the case where ${\rm char}(\mathbb{F})=2$. The main result obtained is an analog of the famous Goncharova's Theorem for the case ${\rm char}(\mathbb{F})=0$ and $k\geqslant 1$.
We study realisations of Lie (super)algebras in Weyl (super)algebras and connections with minimal representations. The main result is the construction of small realisations of Lie superalgebras, which we apply for two distinct purposes. Firstly it naturally introduces, and generalises, the Bessel operators for Jordan algebras in the study of minimal representations of simple Lie groups. These have already been applied very successfully by several authors, however an easy direct explanation for their relevance seemed still to be missing. Secondly, we work out the theoretical realisation concret…
For an arbitrary representation $ρ$ of a complex finite-dimensional Lie algebra, we construct a collection of numbers that we call the Jordan-Kronecker invariants of $ρ$. Among other interesting properties, these numbers provide lower bounds for degrees of polynomial invariants of $ρ$. Furthermore, we prove that these lower bounds are exact if and only if the invariants are independent outside of a set of large codimension. Finally, we show that under certain additional assumptions our bounds are exact if and only if the algebra of invariants is freely generated.
Let g be a finite dimensional Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero. We collect some general results on the Poisson center of S(g), including some simple criteria regarding its polynomiality, and also on certain Poisson commutative subalgebras of S(g). These facts are then used to finish our earlier work on this subject, i.e. to give an explicit description for the Poisson center of all indecomposable, nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension at most seven. Among other things, we also provide a polynomial, maximal Poisson commutative subalgebra of S(g), enjoying ad…
The associative ring $R(P(t))=\mathbb C[t^{\pm1},u \,|\, u^2=P(t)]$, where $P(t)=\sum_{i=0}^na_it^i=\prod_{k=1}^n(t-α_i)$ with $α_i\in\mathbb C$ pairwise distinct, is the coordinate ring of a hyperelliptic curve. The Lie algebra $\mathcal{R}(P(t))=\text{Der}(R(P(t)))$ of derivations is called the hyperelliptic Lie algebra associated to $P(t)$. In this paper we describe the universal central extension of $\text{Der}(R(P(t)))$ in terms of certain families of polynomials which in a particular case are associated Legendre polynomials. Moreover we describe certain families of polynomials that arise…
The problem of computing the characters of the finite dimensional irreducible representations of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak q(n)$ over $\C$ was solved in 1996 by I. Penkov and V. Serganova. In this article, we give a different approach relating the character problem to canonical bases of the quantized enveloping algebra $U_q(\mathfrak b_{\infty})$. We also formulate for the first time a conjecture for the characters of the infinite dimensional irreducible representations in the analogue of category $\mathcal O$ for the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{q}(n)$.
Premet has conjectured that the nilpotent variety of any finite-dimensional restricted Lie algebra is an irreducible variety. In this paper, we prove this conjecture in the case of Hamiltonian Lie algebra. and show that its nilpotent variety is normal and a complete intersection. In addition, we generalize the Chevalley Restriction theorem to Hamiltonian Lie algebra. Accordingly, we give the generators of the invariant polynomial ring.
Let L be a finite dimensional Lie algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero. We provide necessary and also some sufficient conditions in order for its Poisson center and semi-center to be polynomial algebras over k. This occurs for instance if L is quadratic of index 2 with L not equal to [L,L] and also if L is nilpotent of index at most 2. The converse holds for filiform Lie algebras of type Ln, Qn, Rn and Wn. We also show how Dixmier's fourth problem for an algebraic Lie algebra L can be reduced to that of its canonical truncation. Moreover, Dixmier's statement hold…
We reprove the results of Jordan [18] and Siebert [31] and show that the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields on an irreducible affine variety X is simple if and only if X is a smooth variety. Given proof is self-contained and does not depend on papers mentioned above. Besides, the structure of the module of polynomial functions on an irreducible smooth affine variety over the Lie algebra of vector fields is studied. Examples of Lie algebras of polynomial vector fields on an N-dimensional sphere, non-singular hyperelliptic curves and linear algebraic groups are considered.
The ideals of the Lie algebras of unitriangular polynomial derivations are classified. An isomorphism criterion is given for the Lie factor algebras of the Lie algebras of unitriangular polynomial derivations.
Classical harmonic analysis says that the spaces of homogeneous harmonic polynomials (solutions of Laplace equation) are irreducible modules of the corresponding orthogonal Lie group (algebra) and the whole polynomial algebra is a free module over the invariant polynomials generated by harmonic polynomials. In this paper, we first establish two-parameter $\mbb{Z}^2$-graded supersymmetric oscillator generalizations of the above theorem for the Lie superalgebra $gl(n|m)$. Then we extend the result to two-parameter $\mbb{Z}$-graded supersymmetric oscillator generalizations of the above theorem fo…
Polynomials in this paper are defined starting from a compact semisimple Lie group. A known classification of maximal, semisimple subgroups of simple Lie groups is used to select the cases to be considered here. A general method is presented and all the cases of rank not greater then 3 are explicitly studied. We derive the polynomials of simple Lie groups B_3 and C_3 as they are not available elsewhere. The results point to far reaching Lie theoretical connections to the theory of multivariable orthogonal polynomials.
Let L be a restricted Lie superalgebra with its enveloping algebra u(L) over a field F of characteristic p>2. A polynomial identity is called non-matrix if it is not satisfied by the algebra of 2\times 2 matrices over F. We characterize L when u(L) satisfies a non-matrix polynomial identity. In particular, we characterize L when u(L) is Lie solvable, Lie nilpotent, or Lie super-nilpotent.
Chevalley's theorem states that for any simple finite dimensional Lie algebra G (1) the restriction homomorphism of the algebra of polynomials on G onto the Cartan subalgebra H induces an isomorphism between the algebra of G-invariant polynomials on G with the algebra of W-invariant polynomals on H, where W is the Weyl group of G, (2) each G-invariant polynomial is a linear combination of the powers of traces tr r(x), where r is a finite dimensional representation of G. None of these facts is necessarily true for simple Lie superalgebras. We reformulate Chevalley's theorem so as to embrace Lie…
We completely determine the minimal polynomial of an arbitrary simple highest weight module $L(λ)$ over a complex classical Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}\subseteq\mathfrak{gl}_N$ relative to its defining module $π=\mathbb{C}^{N}$. These results are applied to ordering on primitive ideals and algebraic properties of Howe duality correspondence.
A survey of the theory of Kac polynomials for quivers and for curves. In particular, we describe the representation-theoretic meaning of Kac polynomials in terms of Hall algebras, and the geometric meaning of Kac polynomials in relation to the geometry of moduli spaces of representations of quivers or vector bundles on smooth projective curves. We end with some heuristics concerning a family of infinite-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}^2$-graded Lie algebras attached to curves of a fixed genus (over a finite field), whose 'Cartan datum' encodes the dimension of the spaces of absolutely cuspidal functio…
We give a representation--theoretic interpretation of recent discovered coupled soliton equations using vertex operators construction of affinization of not simple but quadratic Lie algebras. In this setup we are able to obtain new integrable hierarchies coupled to each Drinfeld--Sokolov of $A$, $B$, $C$, $D$ hierarchies and to construct their soliton solutions.
In 1971 Griffiths used a generating function to define polynomials in d variables orthogonal with respect to the multinomial distribution. The polynomials possess a duality between the discrete variables and the degree indices. In 2004 Mizukawa and Tanaka related these polynomials to character algebras and the Gelfand hypergeometric series. Using this approach they clarified the duality and obtained a new proof of the orthogonality. In the present paper, we interpret these polynomials within the context of the Lie algebra sl_{d+1}. Our approach yields yet another proof of the orthogonality. It…
We first present a filtration on the ring L of Laurent polynomials such that the direct sum decomposition of its associated graded ring gr L agrees with the direct sum decomposition of gr L, as a module over the complex general linear Lie algebra gl(n), into its simple submodules. Next, generalizing the simple modules occurring in gr L, we give some explicit constructions of weight multiplicity-free irreducible representations of gl(n).
A Leonard pair is a pair of diagonalizable linear transformations of a finite-dimensional vector space, each of which acts in an irreducible tridiagonal fashion on an eigenbasis for the other one. In the present paper we give an elementary but comprehensive account of how the following are related: (i) Krawtchouk polynomials; (ii) finite-dimensional irreducible modules for the Lie algebra ${\mathfrak{sl}_2}$; (iii) a class of Leonard pairs said to have Krawtchouk type. Along the way we obtain elementary proofs of some well-known facts about Krawtchouk polynomials, such as the three-term recurr…
This paper provides a realization of all classical and most exceptional finite groups of Lie type as Galois groups over function fields over F_q and derives explicit additive polynomials for the extensions. Our unified approach is based on results of Matzat which give bounds for Galois groups of Frobenius modules and uses the structure and representation theory of the corresponding connected linear algebraic groups.
Infinitesimal conformal transformations of $R^n$ are always polynomial and finitely generated when $n>2$. Here we prove that the Lie algebra of infinitesimal conformal polynomial transformations over $R^n$, $n>1$, is maximal in the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields. When $n$ is greater than 2 and $p,q$ are such that $p+q=n$, this implies the maximality of an embedding of $so(p+1,q+1,R)$ into polynomial vector fields that was revisited in recent works about equivariant quantizations. It also refines a similar but weaker theorem by V. I. Ogievetsky.
The decomposition of the tensor product of a positive and a negative discrete series representation of the Lie algebra su(1,1) is a direct integral over the principal unitary series representations. In the decomposition discrete terms can occur, and the discrete terms are a finite number of discrete series representations or one complementary series representation. The interpretation of Meixner functions and polynomials as overlap coefficients in the four classes of representations and the Clebsch-Gordan decomposition, lead to a general bilinear generating function for the Meixner polynomials.…
We use the machinery of categorified Jones-Wenzl projectors to construct a categorification of a type A Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of oriented framed tangles where each strand is labeled by an arbitrary finite-dimensional representation. As a special case, we obtain a categorification of the coloured Jones polynomial of links.
The classical Schur polynomials form a natural basis for the ring of symmetric polynomials, and have geometric significance since they represent the Schubert classes in the cohomology ring of Grassmannians. Moreover, these polynomials enjoy rich combinatorial properties. In the last decade, an exact analogue of this picture has emerged in the symplectic and orthogonal Lie types, with the Schur polynomials replaced by the theta and eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author. This expository paper gives an overview of what is known to date about this correspondence, with examples.
We study the category of graded representations with finite--dimensional graded pieces for the current algebra associated to a simple Lie algebra. This category has many similarities with the category $\cal O$ of modules for $\lie g$ and in this paper, we use the combinatorics of Macdonald polynomials to prove an analogue of the famous BGG duality in the case of $\lie{sl}_{n+1}$.
We give a new purely algebraic proof of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff theorem, which states that the homogeneous components of the formal expansion of $\log(e^Ae^B)$ are Lie polynomials. Our proof is based on a recurrence formula for these components and a lemma that states that if under certain conditions a commutator of a non-commuting variable and a given polynomial is a Lie polynomial, then the given polynomial itself is a Lie polynomial.
In this paper we obtain the LU-decomposition of a noncommutative linear system of equations that, in the rank one case, characterizes the image of the Lepowsky homomorphism $U(\lieg)^{K}\to U(\liek)^{M}\otimes U(\liea)$. This LU-decomposition can be transformed into very simple matrix identities, where the entries of the matrices involved belong to a special class of Jacobi polynomials. In particular, each entry of the L part of the original system is expressed in terms of a single ultraspherical Jacobi polynomial. In turns, these matrix identities yield a biorthogonality relation between the …
We develop a powerful framework to calculate expectation values of polynomials and moments on compact Lie groups based on elementary representation-theoretic arguments and an integration by parts formula. In the setting of lattice gauge theory, we generalize expectation value formulas for products of Wilson loops by Chatterjee and Jafarov to arbitrary compact Lie groups, and study explicit examples for many classical compact Lie groups and the exceptional Lie group $G_2$. Extending classical results by Collins and Lévy, we use our framework to derive expectation value formulas of polynomials o…
Recursive algebraic construction of two infinite families of polynomials in $n$ variables is proposed as a uniform method applicable to every semisimple Lie group of rank $n$. Its result recognizes Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kind as the special case of the simple group of type $A_1$. The obtained not Laurent-type polynomials are proved to be equivalent to the partial cases of the Macdonald symmetric polynomials. Basic relation between the polynomials and their properties follow from the corresponding properties of the orbit functions, namely the orthogonality and discretizat…
We investigate the boundedness of oscillating singular integrals on Lie groups of polynomial growth in order to extend the classical oscillating conditions due to Fefferman and Stein for the boundedness of oscillating convolution operators. Kernel criteria are presented in terms of a fixed sub-Riemannian structure on the group induced by a sub-Laplacian associated to a Hörmander system of vector fields. In the case where the group is graded, kernel criteria are presented in terms of the Fourier analysis associated to an arbitrary Rockland operator.
The oscillator Racah algebra $\mathcal{R}_n(\mathfrak{h})$ is realized by the intermediate Casimir operators arising in the multifold tensor product of the oscillator algebra $\mathfrak{h}$. An embedding of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{n-1}$ into $\mathcal{R}_n(\mathfrak{h})$ is presented. It relates the representation theory of the two algebras. We establish the connection between recoupling coefficients for $\mathfrak{h}$ and matrix elements of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-representations which are both expressed in terms of multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials of Griffiths type.
We describe a family of polynomials discovered via a particular recursion relation, which have connections to Chebyshev polynomials of the first and the second kind, and the polynomial version of Pell's equation. Many of their properties are listed in Section 3. We show that these families of polynomials in the variable $t$ satisfy certain second order linear differential equations that may be of interest to mathematicians in conformal field theory and number theory. We also prove that these families of polynomials in the setting of Date-Jimbo-Kashiwara-Miwa algebras when multiplied by a suita…
Recently we have started a program to describe the action of Lie algebras associated with Dynkin-type diagrams on generic Verma modules in terms of polynomial vector fields. In this paper we explain that the results for the classical ABCD series of Lie algebras coincide with the more conventional approach, based on the knowledge of the entire algebra, not only the simple roots. We apply the coset description, starting with a large representation and then reducing it with the help of the algebra, commuting with the original one. The irreducible representations are then obtained by gauge fixing …
We have general frameworks to obtain Poincare polynomials for Finite and also Affine types of Kac-Moody Lie algebras. Very little is known however beyond Affine ones, though we have a constructive theorem which can be applied both for finite and infinite cases. One can conclusively said that theorem gives the Poincare polynomial P(G) of a Kac-Moody Lie algebra G in the product form P(G)=P(g) R where g is a precisely chosen sub-algebra of G and R is a rational function. Not in the way which theorem says but, at least for 48 hyperbolic Lie algebras considered in this work, we have shown that the…
We investigate an algebraic model for the quantum oscillator based upon the Lie superalgebra sh(2|2), known as the Heisenberg-Weyl superalgebra or "the algebra of supersymmetric quantum mechanics", and its Fock representation. The model offers some freedom in the choice of a position and a momentum operator, leading to a free model parameter gamma. Using the technique of Jacobi matrices, we determine the spectrum of the position operator, and show that its wavefunctions are related to Charlier polynomials C_n with parameter gamma^2. Some properties of these wavefunctions are discussed, as well…
