In this paper we will obtain some further properties for specializations in a scheme. Using these results, we will take a picture for a scheme and a picture for a morphism of schemes. In particular, we will prove that every morphism of schemes is specialization-preserving and of norm not greater than one (under some condition); a necessary and sufficient condition will be given for an injective morphism of irreducible schemes.
We define the notion of a specialization morphism from a locally noetherian analytic adic space to a scheme. This captures the (classical) specialization morphism associated to a formal scheme. There is a well behaved theory of compactifications and it turns out that the classical specialization morphism is \emph{proper} in this setup. As an application, we show that the nearby cycles functor commutes with lower shriek in great generality.
We initiate and develop a framework to handle the specialization morphism as a filtered morphism for the perverse, and for the perverse Leray filtration, on the cohomology with constructible coefficients of varieties and morphisms parameterized by a curve. As an application, we use this framework to carry out a detailed study of filtered specialization for the Hitchin morphisms associated with the compactification of Dolbeault moduli spaces in [de-2018].
We give a sufficient condition under which the moduli space of morphisms between logarithmic schemes is quasifinite under the moduli space of morphisms between the underlying schemes. This implies that the moduli space of stable maps from logarithmic curves to a target logarithmic scheme is finite over the moduli space of stable maps, and therefore that it has a projective coarse moduli space when the target is projective.
A morphism of nonreduced Gieseker - Maruyama functor (of semistable coherent torsion-free sheaves) on a surface to the nonreduced functor of admissible semistable pairs with the same Hilbert polynomial, is constructed. This leads to the morphism of moduli schemes with possibly nonreduced scheme structures. As usually, we consider subfunctors corresponding to main components of moduli schemes.
We show that there is a logarithmic algebraic space parameterizing logarithmic morphisms between fixed logarithmic schemes when those logarithmic schemes satisfy natural hypotheses. As a corollary, we obtain the algebraicity of the stack of stable logarithmic maps without restriction on the logarithmic structure of the target.
Let $X$ be a fixed projective scheme which is flat over a base scheme $S$. The association taking a quasi-projective $S$-scheme $Y$ to the scheme parametrizing $S$-morphisms from $X$ to $Y$ is functorial. We prove that this functor preserves limits, and both open and closed immersions. As an application, we determine a partition of schemes parametrizing rational curves on the blow-ups of projective spaces at finitely many points. We compute the dimensions of its components containing rational curves outside the exceptional divisor and the ones strictly contained in it. Furthermore, we provide …
We introduce the notion of a relative log scheme with boundary: a morphism of log schemes together with a (log schematically) dense open immersion of its source into a third log scheme. The sheaf of relative log differentials naturally extends to this compactification and there is a notion of smoothness for such data. We indicate how this weak sort of compactification may be used to develop useful de Rham and crystalline cohomology theories for semistable log schemes over the log point over a field which are not necessarily proper.
In this article we extend Deligne's construction of Grothendieck's six operations on the derived category of torsion sheaves over the étale site of a scheme for morphisms of finite type to a larger class of morphisms. This class includes profinite étale coverings as well as separated morphisms perfectly of finite type
Using the Shioda-Tate theorem and an adaptation of Silverman's specialization theorem, we reduce the specialization of Mordell-Weil ranks for abelian varieties over fields finitely generated over infinite finitely generated fields $k$ to the the specialization theorem for Néron-Severi ranks recently proved by Ambrosi in positive characteristic. More precisely, we prove that after a blow-up of the base surface $S$, for all vertical curves $S_x$ of a fibration $S \to U \subseteq \mathbf{P}^1_k$ with $x$ from the complement of a sparse subset of $|U|$, the Mordell-Weil rank of an abelian scheme o…
We consider the stack $\mathcal{L}og_X$ parametrizing log schemes over a log scheme $X$, and weak and strong properties of log morphisms via $\mathcal{L}og_X$, as defined by Olsson. We give a concrete combinatorial presentation of $\mathcal{L}og_X$, and prove a simple criterion of when weak and strong properties of log morphisms coincide. We then apply this result to the study of logarithmic regularity, derive its main properties, and give a chart criterion analogous to Kato's chart criterion of logarithmic smoothness.
The notions of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein scheme and of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein morphism are introduced for locally Noetherian schemes by dualizing complexes and (relative) canonical sheaves. These cover all the previously known notions of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein algebraic variety and of $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein deformation satisfying Kollár condition, over a field. By studies on relative $\mathbf S_{2}$-condition and base change properties, valuable results are proved for $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein morphisms, which include infinitesimal criterion, valuative criterion, $\mathbb Q$-Gorenstein refinement, a…
We introduce the notion of a separator for a morphism of schemes f:T\to S; in particular, it is universal among morphisms from T to separated S-schemes. A separator is a local isomorphism; this property conveys the intuition of gluing some affine covering more, in order to make the scheme separated. When f is quasi-separated, its separator exists if and only if the schematic closure of the diagonal projects on both factors by flat morphisms of finite type. In particular, f admits a separator if T is Noetherian Dedekind and S=Spec(Z), or if f is étale of finite presentation and S is normal. Any…
We give some necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Néron models of jacobians of semistable morphisms of arbitrary relative dimension over base schemes of arbitrary dimension. To do this, we introduce a notion of alignment for semistable morphisms over any regular base scheme, and show that the jacobian of an aligned projective semistable morphism admits a separated model with the Néron mapping property. When the Picard scheme is smooth over the base scheme along its unit section we show that the converse holds.
Given a scheme S and a flat morphism T \to S of finite presentation we define a surjective S-morphism to an {é}tale and separated S-scheme, which is universal in an obvious sense. Properties of this morphism are deduced from a thorough uses of quotients by equivalence relations whose graph is open and closed.
A ringed finite space is a ringed space whose underlying topological space is finite. The category of ringed finite spaces contains, fully faithfully, the category of finite topological spaces and the category of affine schemes. Any ringed space, endowed with a finite open covering, produces a ringed finite space. We introduce the notions of schematic finite space and schematic morphism, showing that they behave, with respect to quasi-coherence, like schemes and morphisms of schemes do. Finally, we construct a fully faithful and essentially surjective functor from a localization of a full subc…
We extend the Cox-Hu-Keel construction of the Cox rings to any proper birational morphisms of normal noetherian schemes. It allows the representation of any proper birational morphism by a map of schemes with mild singularities with torus actions. In a particular case, the notion generalizes the combinatorial construction of Satriano and the recent construction of multiple weighted blow-ups on Artin-stacks by Abramovich-Quek. The latter can be viewed as an extension of stack theoretic blow-ups by Abramovich, Temkin, and Wlodarczyk, a similar construction of McQuillan and the author's recent co…
We investigate the $W_2(k)$-liftability of singular schemes. We prove constructibility of the locus of $W_2(k)$-liftable schemes in a flat family $X \to S$. Moreover, we construct an explicit $W_2(k)$-lifting of a Frobenius split scheme $X$ over a perfect field $k$, reproving Bhatt's existential result. Furthermore, we study existence of liftings of the Frobenius morphism. In particular, we prove that in dimension $n \geq 4$ ordinary double points do not admit a $W_2(k)$-lifting compatible with Frobenius, and that canonical surface singularities are Frobenius liftable. Combined with Bhatt's re…
Relations between some kinds of formal and standard smoothness, for morphisms of schemes, are clarified in surprisingly simple and direct ways, bypassing much of the customarily employed machinery. Even the deep local-to-global property of formal smoothness has a fairly elementary proof, under mild additional hypotheses.
We give an effective criterion for openness of a morphism of schemes of finite type over a field: Over a normal base of dimension n, failure of openness is detected by a vertical component in the n'th fibred power of the morphism. This is a topological analogue of a criterion for flatness that originates with Auslander.
We give criteria for certain morphisms from an algebraic stack to a (not necessarily algebraic) stack to admit an (appropriately defined) scheme-theoretic image. We apply our criteria to show that certain natural moduli stacks of local Galois representations are algebraic (or Ind-algebraic) stacks.
This paper concerns the recent Virasoro conjecture for the theory of stable pairs on a 3-fold proposed by Oblomkov, Okounkov, Pandharipande and the author in arXiv:2008.12514. Here we extend the conjecture to 3-folds with non-$(p,p)$-cohomology and we prove it in two specializations. For the first specialization, we let $S$ be a simply-connected surface and consider the moduli space $P_n(S\times \mathbb{P}^1, n[\mathbb{P}^1])$, which happens to be isomorphic to the Hilbert scheme $S^{[n]}$ of $n$ points on $S$. The Virasoro constraints for stable pairs, in this case, can be formulated entirely…
We set up the geometric background necessary to extend rigid cohomology from the case of algebraic varieties to the case of general locally noetherian formal schemes. In particular, we generalize Berthelot's strong fibration theorem to adic spaces: we show that if we are given a morphism of locally noetherian formal schemes which is partially proper and formally smooth around a formal subscheme, and we pull back along a morphism from an analytic space which is locally of noetherian type, then we obtain locally a fibration on strict neighborhoods.
We prove equality of the various $p$-adic period morphisms for smooth, not necessarily proper, schemes. We start with showing that the $K$-theoretical uniqueness criterium we had found for proper smooth schemes extends to proper finite simplicial schemes in the good reduction case and to cohomology with compact support in the semistable reduction case. It yields the equality of the period morphisms for cohomology with compact support defined using the syntomic, almost étale, and motivic constructions. We continue with showing that the $h$-cohomology period morphism agrees with the syntomic and…
Given an arbitrary projective birational morphism of varieties, we provide a natural and explicit way of constructing relative compactifications of the maps induced on the main components of the jet schemes. In the case the morphism is the Nash blow-up of a variety, such relative compactifications are shown to be given by the Nash blow-ups of the main components of the jet schemes.
Let $X$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective curve. Let ${\mathcal Q}(r,d)$ be the Quot scheme parametrizing all coherent subsheaves of ${\mathcal O}^{\oplus r}_X$ of rank $r$ and degree $-d$. There are natural morphisms ${\mathcal Q}(r,d) \longrightarrow \text{Sym}^d(X)$ and $\text{Sym}^d(X) \longrightarrow \text{Pic}^d(X)$. We prove that both these morphisms induce isomorphism of Brauer groups if $d \geq 2$. Consequently, the Brauer group of ${\mathcal Q}(r,d)$ is identified with the Brauer group of $\text{Pic}^d(X)$ if $d \geq 2$.
The aim of this paper is to give a unified definition of a large class of discriminants arising in algebraic geometry using the discriminant of a morphism of locally free sheaves. The discriminant of a morphism of locally free sheaves has a geometric definition in terms of grassmannian bundles, tautological sequences and projections and is a simultaneous generalization of the discriminant of a morphism of schemes, the discriminant of a linear system on a smooth projective scheme and the classical discriminant of degree $d$ polynomials. We study the discriminant of a morphism in various situati…
Consider the scheme parametrizing non-constant morphisms from a fixed projective curve to a projective surface. There is a rational map between this scheme and the Chow variety of $1$-cycles on the surface. We prove that, if the curve is non-singular, then this rational map is a morphism. As a consequence, we obtain that, if the surface is rational and we fix a divisor class containing a non-singular rational curve, then the scheme parametrizing rational curves on this class is irreducible. Further, if the class has non-negative self-intersection, then the scheme of rational curves has expecte…
We show that the weakly étale morphisms, used to define the pro-étale site of a scheme, are characterized by a lifting property similar to the one which characterizes formally étale morphisms. In order to prove this, we prove a theorem called Henselian descent which is a "Henselized version" of the fact that a scheme defines a sheaf for the fpqc topology. Finally, we show that weakly étale algebras over regular rings arising in geometry are ind-étale and that weakly étale algebras do not always lift along surjective ring homomorphisms.
