In this paper we will prove that there exists a covariant functor from the category of schemes to the category of graphs. This functor provides a combination between algebraic varieties and combinatorial graphs so that the invariants defined on graphs can be introduced to algebraic varieties in a natural manner. By the functor, we will define the combinatorial norm of a morphism of schemes. Then we will obtain some properties of morphisms of norm not great than one. The topics discussed here can be applied to study the discrete Morse theory on arithmetic schemes and Kontsevich's theory of graph homology.
We introduce the notion of combinatorial type of varieties $X$ which generalizes the concept of the dual complex of SNC divisors. It is a unique, up to homotopy, finite simplicial complex $Σ(X)$ which is functorial with respect to morphisms of varieties. Its cohomology $H^i(Σ(X),Q)$ for complex projective varieties coincide with weight zero part of the Deligne filtration $W_0(H^i(X,Q))$. The notion can be understood as a topological measure of the singularities of algebaric schemes of finite type. We also prove that any variety in characteristic zero admits the Hironaka desingularization with …
We consider the stack $\mathcal{L}og_X$ parametrizing log schemes over a log scheme $X$, and weak and strong properties of log morphisms via $\mathcal{L}og_X$, as defined by Olsson. We give a concrete combinatorial presentation of $\mathcal{L}og_X$, and prove a simple criterion of when weak and strong properties of log morphisms coincide. We then apply this result to the study of logarithmic regularity, derive its main properties, and give a chart criterion analogous to Kato's chart criterion of logarithmic smoothness.
We investigate the tree gonality of a genus-$g$ metric graph, defined as the minimum degree of a tropical morphism from any tropical modification of the metric graph to a metric tree. We give a combinatorial constructive proof that this number is at most $\lceil g/2 \rceil + 1$, a fact whose proofs so far required an algebro-geometric detour via special divisors on curves. For even genus, the tropical morphism which realizes the bound belongs to a family of tropical morphisms that is pure of dimension $3g-3$ and that has a generically finite-to-one map onto the moduli space of genus-$g$ metric…
Let $Y$ be a normal and projective variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ and $V$ a vector bundle over $Y$. We prove that if there exist a $k$-scheme $X$ and a finite surjective morphism $g:X\to Y$ that trivializes $V$ then $V$ is essentially finite.
We extend the Cox-Hu-Keel construction of the Cox rings to any proper birational morphisms of normal noetherian schemes. It allows the representation of any proper birational morphism by a map of schemes with mild singularities with torus actions. In a particular case, the notion generalizes the combinatorial construction of Satriano and the recent construction of multiple weighted blow-ups on Artin-stacks by Abramovich-Quek. The latter can be viewed as an extension of stack theoretic blow-ups by Abramovich, Temkin, and Wlodarczyk, a similar construction of McQuillan and the author's recent co…
Morphisms of matroids are combinatorial abstractions of linear maps and graph homomorphisms. We introduce the notion of basis for morphisms of matroids, and show that its generating function is strongly log-concave. As a consequence, we obtain a generalization of Mason's conjecture on the $f$-vectors of independent subsets of matroids to arbitrary morphisms of matroids. To establish this, we define multivariate Tutte polynomials of morphisms of matroids, and show that they are Lorentzian in the sense of [BH19] for sufficiently small positive parameters.
We give an effective criterion for openness of a morphism of schemes of finite type over a field: Over a normal base of dimension n, failure of openness is detected by a vertical component in the n'th fibred power of the morphism. This is a topological analogue of a criterion for flatness that originates with Auslander.
We introduce the notion of a separator for a morphism of schemes f:T\to S; in particular, it is universal among morphisms from T to separated S-schemes. A separator is a local isomorphism; this property conveys the intuition of gluing some affine covering more, in order to make the scheme separated. When f is quasi-separated, its separator exists if and only if the schematic closure of the diagonal projects on both factors by flat morphisms of finite type. In particular, f admits a separator if T is Noetherian Dedekind and S=Spec(Z), or if f is étale of finite presentation and S is normal. Any…
Let $X$ be a projective variety (possibly singular) over an algebraically closed field of any characteristic and $\mathcal{F}$ be a coherent sheaf. In this article, we define the determinant of $\mathcal{F}$ such that it agrees with the classical definition of determinant in the case when $X$ is non-singular. We study how the Hilbert polynomial of the determinant varies in families of singular varieties. Consider a singular family such that every fiber is a normal, projective variety. Unlike in the case when the family is smooth, the Hilbert polynomial of the determinant does not remain consta…
We present a method to control gonality of nonarchimedean curves based on graph theory. Let k denote a complete nonarchimedean valued field. We first prove a lower bound for the gonality of a curve over the algebraic closure of k in terms of the minimal degree of a class of graph maps, namely: one should minimize over all so-called finite harmonic graph morphisms to trees, that originate from any refinement of the dual graph of the stable model of the curve. Next comes our main result: we prove a lower bound for the degree of such a graph morphism in terms of the first eigenvalue of the Laplac…
