Given a morphism $X \to S$ of fine log schemes, we develop a geometric description of the sheaves of higher-order differentials $Ω^n_{X/S}$ for $n > 1$, as well as a definition of the de Rham complex in terms of this description.
Illusie has suggested that one should think of the classifying group of $M_X^{gp}$-torsors on a logarithmically smooth curve $X$ over a standard logarithmic point as a logarithmic analogue of the Picard group of $X$. This logarithmic Picard group arises naturally as a quotient of the algebraic Picard group by lifts of the chip firing relations of the associated dual graph. We connect this perspective to Baker and Norine's theory of ranks of divisors on a finite graph, and to Amini and Baker's metrized complexes of curves. Moreover, we propose a definition of a combinatorial rank for line bundl…
We prove a structure theorem for the differential operator in the 0-term of the ${\cal V}$-filtration with respect to a free divisor. Using this theorem, we give a formula for the logarithmic de Rham complex in terms of ${\cal V}_0$-modules. We also give a sufficient condition for perversity of the logarithmic de Rham complex.
The purpose of this note is to give a short proof of a theorem of Kollár that the derived direct image of the canonical sheaf splits into a sum of its cohomology sheaves. This is deduced from a stronger decomposition theorem for direct images of sheaves of logarithmic differentials, together with the weak semistable reduction theorem.
We introduce the notion of log $p$-smoothness which weakens that of log-smoothness and that of having locally $p$-bases. We extend Berthelot's construction of arithmetic $D$-modules and some properties in this context.
We consider the stack $\mathcal{L}og_X$ parametrizing log schemes over a log scheme $X$, and weak and strong properties of log morphisms via $\mathcal{L}og_X$, as defined by Olsson. We give a concrete combinatorial presentation of $\mathcal{L}og_X$, and prove a simple criterion of when weak and strong properties of log morphisms coincide. We then apply this result to the study of logarithmic regularity, derive its main properties, and give a chart criterion analogous to Kato's chart criterion of logarithmic smoothness.
We give explicit estimates for the volume of the Green-Griffiths jet differentials of any order on a toroidal compactification of a ball quotient. To this end, we first determine the growth of the logarithmic Green-Griffiths jet differentials on these objects, using a natural deformation of the logarithmic jet space of a given order, to a suitable weighted projective bundle. Then, we estimate the growth of the vanishing conditions that a logarithmic jet differential must satisfy over the boundary to be a standard one.
Kyoji Saito's notion of a free divisor was generalized by the first author to reduced Gorenstein spaces and by Delphine Pol to reduced Cohen-Macaulay spaces. Starting point is the Aleksandrov-Terao theorem: A hypersurface is free if and only if its Jacobian ideal is maximal Cohen-Macaulay. Pol obtains a generalized Jacobian ideal as a cokernel by dualizing Aleksandrov's multi-logarithmic residue sequence. Notably it is essentially a suitably chosen complete intersection ideal that is used for dualizing. Pol shows that this generalized Jacobian ideal is maximal Cohen-Macaulay if and only if the…
We introduce the concept of directed orbifold, namely triples (X, V, D) formed by a directed algebraic or analytic variety (X, V), and a ramification divisor D, where V is a coherent subsheaf of the tangent bundle TX. In this context, we introduce an algebra of orbifold jet differentials and their sections. These jet sections can be seen as algebraic differential operators acting on germs of curves, with meromorphic coefficients, whose poles are supported by D and multiplicities are bounded by the ramification indices of the components of D. We estimate precisely the curvature tensor of the co…
Logarithmic differential forms and logarithmic vector fields associated to a hypersurface with an isolated singularity are considered in the context of computational complex analysis. As applications, based on the concept of torsion differential forms due to A.G. Aleksandrov, regular meromorphic differential forms introduced by D. Barlet and M. Kersken, and Brieskorn formulae on Gauss-Manin connections are investigated. (i) A method is given to describe singular parts of regular meromorphic differential forms in terms of non-trivial logarithmic vector fields via Saito's logarithmic residues. T…
This article deals with the irreducible components of the space of codimension one foliations in a projective space defined by logarithmic forms of a certain degree. We study the geometry of the natural parametrization of the logarithmic components and we give a new proof of the stability of logarithmic foliations, obtaining also that these irreducible components are reduced.
We extend to a scheme-theoretic context the notion of a combinatorial differential form, due to A.Kock in the framework of synthetic differential geometry. We show that group-valued combinatorial forms on a scheme may be identified, under very general hypotheses, with traditional Lie algebra-valued differential forms, and that their Lie algebra structure can be recovered from first principles. Some basic results from differential geometry (Maurer-Cartan equation, Bianchi identity), as well as a higher analogue, are obtained by exploiting this identification.
In this paper we prove that any degree $d$ deformation of a generic logarithmic polynomial differential equation with a persistent center must be logarithmic again. This is a generalization of Ilyashenko's result on Hamiltonian differential equations. The main tools are Picard-Lefschetz theory of a polynomial with complex coefficients in two variables, specially the Gusein-Zade/A'Campo's theorem on calculating the Dynkin diagram of the polynomial, and the action of Gauss-Manin connection on the so called Brieskorn lattice/Petrov module of the polynomial. Some applications on the cyclicity of c…
Let $O_X$ (resp. $D_X$) be the sheaf of holomorphic functions (resp. the sheaf of linear differential operators with holomorphic coefficients) on $X$ (=the complex affine n-space). Let $Y$ be a locally weakly quasi-homogeneous free divisor defined by a polynomial $f$. In this paper we prove that, locally, the annihilating ideal of $1/f^k$ over $D_X$ is generated by linear differential operators of order 1 (for $k$ big enough). For this purpose we prove a vanishing theorem for the extension groups of a certain logarithmic $D_X$--module with $O_X$. The logarithmic $D_X$--module is naturally asso…
Given an ordinary differential field $K$ of characteristic zero, it is known that if $y$ and $1/y$ satisfy linear differential equations with coefficients in $K$, then $y'/y$ is algebraic over $K$. We present a new short proof of this fact using Gröbner basis techniques and give a direct method for finding a polynomial over $K$ that $y'/y$ satisfies. Moreover, we provide explicit degree bounds and extend the result to fields with positive characteristic. Finally, we give an application of our method to a class of nonlinear differential equations.
We study divisors in a complex manifold in view of the property that the algebra of logarithmic differential operators along the divisor is generated by logarithmic vector fields. We give a sufficient criterion for the property, a simple proof of F.J. Calderon-Moreno's theorem that free divisors have the property, a proof that divisors in dimension 3 with only isolated quasi-homogeneous singularities have the property, an example of a non-free divisor with non-isolated singularity having the property, an example of a divisor not having the property, and an algorithm to compute the V-filtration…
The theory of relative logarithmic jet spaces is developed for log schemes. With this theory the existence of bounds of intersection multiplicities of curves and divisors on certain log schemes is established. This result extends those of Noguchi and Winkelmann by replacing the semi-abelian condition by a differential one.
We characterize quasihomogeneity of isolated singularities by the injectivity of the map induced by the first differential of the logarithmic differential complex in the top local cohomology supported in the singular point.
Let $W$ be a finite irreducible real reflection group, which is a Coxeter group. We explicitly construct a basis for the module of differential 1-forms with logarithmic poles along the Coxeter arrangement by using a primitive derivation. As a consequence, we extend the Hodge filtration, indexed by nonnegative integers, into a filtration indexed by all integers. This filtration coincides with the filtration by the order of poles. The results are translated into the derivation case.
We give upper-bounds for the dimension of some linear systems. The theorem improves the differential Horace method introduced by Alexander-Hirschowitz, and was conjectured by Simpson. Possible applications are the calculus of the dimension of linear systems of hypersurfaces in a projective space $\PP^n$ with generically prescribed singularities, and the calculus of collisions of fat points in $\PP^2$. These applications will be treated independently but a simple example in the introduction explains how the theorem will be used.
Let $K$ be a local field, $X$ the Drinfel'd symmetric space $X$ of dimension $d$ over $K$ and ${\mathfrak X}$ the natural formal ${\mathcal O}_K$-scheme underlying $X$; thus $G={\rm GL}\sb {d+1}(K)$ acts on $X$ and ${\mathfrak X}$. Given a $K$-rational $G$-representation $M$ we construct a $G$-equivariant subsheaf ${\mathcal M}^0_{{\mathcal O}_{\dot{K}}}$ of ${\mathcal O}_K$-lattices in the constant sheaf $M$ on ${\mathfrak X}$. We study the cohomology of sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on $X$ (or ${\mathfrak X}$) with coefficients in ${\mathcal M}^0_{{\mathcal O}_{\dot{K}}}$. In the…
Let W be a finite group generated by unitary reflections and A be the set of reflecting hyperplanes. We will give a characterization of the logarithmic differential forms with poles along A in terms of anti-invariant differential forms. If W is a Coxeter group defined over the real numbers, then the characterization provides a new method to find a basis for the module of logarithmic differential forms out of basic invariants.
In this paper, we first establish an $L^2$-type Dolbeault isomorphism for logarithmic differential forms by Hörmander's $L^2$-estimates. By using this isomorphism and the construction of smooth Hermitian metrics, we obtain a number of new vanishing theorems for sheaves of logarithmic differential forms on compact Kähler manifolds with simple normal crossing divisors, which generalize several classical vanishing theorems, including Norimatsu's vanishing theorem, Gibrau's vanishing theorem, Le Potier's vanishing theorem and a version of the Kawamata-Viehweg vanishing theorem.
We introduce in this paper a hypercohomology version of the resonance varieties and obtain some relations to the characteristic varieties of rank one local systems on a smooth quasi-projective complex variety $M$, see Theorem (3.1) and Corollaries (3.2) and (4.2). A logarithmic resonance variety is also considered in Proposition (4.5). As an application, we determine the first characteristic variety of the configuration space of $n$ distinct labeled points on an elliptic curve, see Proposition (5.1). Finally, for a logarithmic one form $α$ on $M$ we investigate the relation between the resonan…
Morphisms of matroids are combinatorial abstractions of linear maps and graph homomorphisms. We introduce the notion of basis for morphisms of matroids, and show that its generating function is strongly log-concave. As a consequence, we obtain a generalization of Mason's conjecture on the $f$-vectors of independent subsets of matroids to arbitrary morphisms of matroids. To establish this, we define multivariate Tutte polynomials of morphisms of matroids, and show that they are Lorentzian in the sense of [BH19] for sufficiently small positive parameters.
In this paper we provide a formula for the canonical differential form of the hypersimplex $Δ_{k,n}$ for all $n$ and $k$. We also study the generalization of the momentum amplituhedron $\mathcal{M}_{n,k}$ to $m=2$, and we conclude that the existing definition does not possess the desired properties. Nevertheless, we find interesting momentum amplituhedron-like logarithmic differential forms in the $m=2$ version of the spinor helicity space, that have the same singularity structure as the hypersimplex canonical forms.
Given a logarithmic $1$-form on the snc locus of a log canonical surface pair $(X, D)$ over a perfect field of characteristic $p \ge 7$, we show that it extends with at worst logarithmic poles to any resolution of singularities. We also prove the analogous statement for regular differential forms, under an additional tameness hypothesis. In addition, residue and restriction sequences for tamely dlt pairs are established. We give a number of examples showing that our results are sharp in the surface case, and that they fail in higher dimensions. On the other hand, our techniques yield a new pro…
In this paper consisting of two parts, we study the integral of a logarithmic differential form on a compact semi-algebraic set in R^n or C^n. In Part I, we prove the convergence of the integral when the semi-algebraic set satisfies allowability (or admissibility), a condition on the dimension of the intersection of the set and the pole divisor of the differential form.
The principal goal of the paper is to apply the approach inspired by the theory of integrable systems to construct explicit sections of line bundles over the combinatorial model of the moduli space of pointed Riemann surfaces based on Jenkins-Strebel differentials. The line bundles are tensor products of the determinants of the Hodge or Prym vector bundles with the standard tautological line bundles $\mathcal L_j$ and the sections are constructed in terms of tau functions. The combinatorial model is interpreted as the real slice of a complex analytic moduli space of quadratic differentials whe…
Let $(X, D)$ be a logarithmic pair, and let $h$ be a singular metric on the tangent bundle, smooth on the open part of $X$. We give sufficient conditions on the curvature of $h$ for the logarithmic and the standard cotangent bundles to be big. As an application, we give a metric proof of the bigness of logarithmic cotangent bundle on any toroidal compactification of a bounded symmetric domain. Then, we use this singular metric approach to study the bigness and the nefness of the standard tangent bundle in the more specific case of the ball. We obtain effective ramification orders for a cover $…
