We make a systematic study of the infinitesimal lifting conditions of a pseudo finite type map of noetherian formal schemes. We recover the usual general properties in this context, and, more importantly, we uncover some new phenomena. We define a completion map of formal schemes as the one that arises canonically by performing the completion of a noetherian formal scheme along a subscheme, following the well-known pattern of ordinary schemes. These maps are etale in the sense of this work (but not adic). They allow us to give a local description of smooth morphisms. This morphisms can be factored locally as a completion map followed from a smooth adic morphism. The latter kind of morphisms can be factored locally as an etale adic morphism followed by a (formal) affine space. We also characterize etale adic morphisms giving an equivalence of categories between the category of etale adic formal schemes over a noetherian formal scheme (X, O_X) and the category of etale schemes over the ordinary scheme (X, O_X/I), with I an Ideal of definition. These results characterize completely the local behavior of formally smooth pseudo finite type (i.e. smooth) maps of noetherian formal schemes. In the final chapter, we study the basic deformation theory of smooth morphisms.
In order to calculate the multiplicity of an isolated rational curve C in a local complete intersection variety X, i.e. the length of the Hilbert scheme of X at [C], it is important to study infinitesimal neighborhoods of the curve in X. This is equivalent to infinitesimal extensions of P^1 by locally free sheaves. In this paper we study infinitesimal extensions of P^1, determine their structure and obtain upper and lower bounds for the length of the local rings of their Hilbert schemes at [P^].
This a first step to develop a theory of smooth, etale and unramified morphisms between noetherian formal schemes. Our main tool is the complete module of differentials, that is a coherent sheaf whenever the map of formal schemes is of pseudo finite type. Among our results we show that these infinitesimal properties of a map of usual schemes carry over into the completion with respect to suitable closed subsets. We characterize unramifiedness by the vanishing of the module of differentials. Also we see that a smooth morphism of noetherian formal schemes is flat and its module of differentials …
In this article, we analyze the connection between the Log De Rham Cohomology of an fs (not necessary log smooth) log scheme $Y$ over $\mathbb C$ (for $Y$ admitting an exact closed immersion into an fs log smooth log scheme over $\mathbb C$), its Log Infinitesimal Cohomology $H^{^.}(Y^{log}_{inf}, \mathcal O_{Y^{log}_{inf}})$, and its Log Betti Cohomology, which is the Cohomology of its associated Kato-Nakayama topological space $Y^{an}_{log}$, and we prove that they are isomorphic. These results are the log scheme analogues of two classical comparison theorems.
This article is concerned with Galois theory for iterative differential fields (ID-fields) in positive characteristic. More precisely, we consider purely inseparable Picard-Vessiot extensions, because these are the ones having an infinitesimal group scheme as iterative differential Galois group. In this article we prove a necessary and sufficient condition to decide whether an infinitesimal group scheme occurs as Galois group scheme of a Picard-Vessiot extension over a given ID-field or not. In particular, this solves the inverse ID-Galois problem for infinitesimal group schemes.
The purpose of this article is to show that the Castelnuovo theory for abelian varieties, developed by G. Pareschi and M. Popa, can be infinitesimalized. More precisely, we prove that an irreducible principally polarized abelian variety has a finite scheme in extremal position, in the sense of Castelnuovo theory for abelian varieties, if, and only if, it is a Jacobian and the scheme is contained in a unique Abel-Jacobi curve.
In this article, we study the Hilbert scheme of generically non-reduced curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. We prove the existence of generically non-reduced curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$ for which there exist infinitesimal deformations of the curve that do not induce deformations of the associated reduced scheme. We show that such infinitesimal deformations contribute to the non-reducedness of the corresponding Hilbert scheme. We introduce the notion of extension of curves and prove that such infinitesimal deformations (such that the associated reduced scheme does not deform) are inherited by the extended c…
We show that the Hilbert scheme which parameterises bitangent lines to a general quartic surface is a counterexample to the infinitesimal Torelli claim and is a smooth regular surface with no rational curves and very ample canonical divisor.
For $k$ a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$ and $G/k$ a split reductive group with $p$ a non-torsion prime for $G,$ we compute the mod $p$ motivic cohomology of the geometric classifying space $BG_{(r)}$, where $G_{(r)}$ is the $r$th Frobenius kernel of $G.$ Our main tool is a motivic version of the Eilenberg-Moore spectral sequence, due to Krishna. For a flat affine group scheme $G/k$ of finite type, we define a cycle class map from the mod $p$ motivic cohomology of the classifying space $BG$ to the mod $p$ étale motivic cohomology of the classifying stack $\mathcal{B}G.$ This also gives …
We show that the classification of simple finite group schemes over an algebraically closed field reduces to the classification of abstract simple finite groups and of simple restricted Lie algebras in positive characteristic. Both these two simple objects have been classified. We review this classification. Finally, we address the problem of determining the infinitesimal deformations of simple finite group schemes.
We propose a generalization of Ledet conjecture, which predicts the essential dimension of cyclic $p$-groups in characteristic $p$, for finite commutative unipotent group schemes. And we show some evidence and some consequences of this new conjecture.
We discuss essential dimension of group schemes, with particular attention to infinitesimal group schemes. We prove that the essential dimension of a group scheme of finite type over a field k is at least equal to the difference between the dimension of its Lie algebra and its dimension. Furthermore, we show that the essential dimension of a trigonalizable group scheme of length p^{n} over a field of characteristic p>0 is at most n. We give several examples.
The title refers to the nilcommutative or $NC$-schemes introduced by M. Kapranov in math.AG/9802041. The latter are noncommutative nilpotent thickenings of commutative schemes. We consider also the parallel theory of nil-Poisson or $NP$-schemes, which are nilpotent thickenings of commutative schemes in the category of Poisson schemes. We study several variants of de Rham cohomology for $NC$- and $NP$-schemes. The variants include nilcommutative and nil-Poisson versions of the de Rham complex as well as of the cohomology of the infinitesimal site introduced by Grothendieck. It turns out that ea…
In order to have cohomological operations for de Rham p-adic cohomology with coefficients as manageable as possible, the main purpose of this paper is to solve intrinsically and from a cohomological point of view the lifting problem of smooth schemes and their morphisms from characteristic p > 0 to characteristic zero which has been one of the fundamental difficulties in the theory of de Rham cohomology of algebraic schemes in positive characteristic since the beginning. We show that although smooth schemes and morphisms fail to lift geometrically, it is as if this was the case within the coho…
Let G be an infinitesimal group scheme over a field k of positive characteristic p. We introduce the global p-nilpotent operator $Θ_G: k[G] \to k[V(G)]$, where V(G) is the scheme which represents 1-parameter subgroups of G. This operator applied to M encodes the local Jordan type of M, and leads to computational insights into the representation theory of G. For certain G-modules (including those of constant Jordan type), we employ the global p-nilpotent operator to associate various algebraic vector bundles on the projective scheme $\bP(G)$, the projectivization of the scheme of one-parameter …
We continue our study on infinitesimal lifting properties of maps between locally noetherian formal schemes started in math.AG/0604241. In this paper, we focus on some properties which arise specifically in the formal context. In this vein, we make a detailed study of the relationship between the infinitesimal lifting properties of a morphism of formal schemes and those of the corresponding maps of usual schemes associated to the directed systems that define the corresponding formal schemes. Among our main results, we obtain the characterization of completion morphisms as pseudo-closed immersi…
The study of infinitesimal deformations of a variety embedded in projective space requires that of deformations of a collection of points, as specified by a zero-dimensional scheme. Further, basic problems in infinitesimal interpolation correspond directly to the analysis of such a scheme We interpret conjectures of Froberg and Iarrobino on the Hilbert function of a general collection of infinitesimal neighbourhoods of a collection of points in projective space. A main result gives a method for verifying the Weak Conjecture prescribed. Further, we present results on establishing the Strong Con…
Our results concern analytic functions on the open unit $p$-adic poly-disc in $\mathbb{C}^n_p$ centered at the multiplicative unit and we prove that such functions only vanish at finitely many $n$-tuples of roots of unity $(ζ_1-1,\ldots,ζ_n-1)$ unless they vanish along a translate of the formal multiplicative group. For polynomial functions, this follows from the multiplicative Manin-Mumford conjecture. However we allow for a much wider class of analytic functions; in particular we establish a rigidity result for formal tori. Moreover, our methods apply to Lubin-Tate formal groups beyond just …
We give several results concerning the connected component ${\rm Aut}_X^0$ of the automorphism scheme of a proper variety $X$ over a field, such as its behaviour with respect to birational modifications, normalization, restrictions to closed subschemes and deformations. Then, we apply our results to study the automorphism scheme of not necessarily Jacobian elliptic surfaces $f: X \to C$ over algebraically closed fields, generalizing work of Rudakov and Shafarevich, while giving counterexamples to some of their statements. We bound the dimension $h^0(X,T_X)$ of the space of global vector fields…
Let X be a proper scheme and Z a prestack over X equipped with a flat connection. We give a local-to-global description of D-modules on the prestack S(Z) of flat sections of Z. Examples of S(Z) include the moduli stacks of principal G-bundles and de Rham local systems on X. We show that the category of D-modules is equivalent to the category of ind-coherent sheaves which are equivariant with respect to infinitesimal Hecke groupoids parametrized by finite subsets of X. We describe a number of applications to geometric representation theory and conformal field theory, including a derived enhance…
We realize the infinitesimal Abel-Jacobi map as a morphism of formal deformation theories, realized as a morphism in the homotopy category of differential graded Lie algebras. The whole construction is carried out in a general setting, of which the classical Abel-Jacobi map is a special example.
The purpose of this note is to study the Maulik-Okounkov $K-$theoretic stable basis for the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane, which depends on a "slope" $m \in \mathbb{R}$. When $m = \frac ab$ is rational, we study the change of stable matrix from slope $m-\varepsilon$ to $m+\varepsilon$ for small $\varepsilon>0$, and conjecture that it is related to the Leclerc-Thibon conjugation in the $q-$Fock space for $U_q\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}_b$. This is part of a wide framework of connections involving derived categories of quantized Hilbert schemes, modules for rational Cherednik algebras and He…
The Chow groups of codimension-p algebraic cycles modulo rational equivalence on a smooth algebraic variety X have steadfastly resisted the efforts of algebraic geometers to fathom their structure. This book explores a "linearization" approach to this problem, focusing on the infinitesimal structure of the Chow groups near their identity elements. This method was adumbrated in recent work of Mark Green and Phillip Griffiths. Similar topics have been explored by Bloch, Stienstra, Hesselholt, Van der Kallen, and others. A famous formula of Bloch expresses the Chow groups as Zariski sheaf cohomol…
If $X$ is a smooth scheme of characteristic zero or a complex analytic manifold, and $S$ is a locally split infinitesimal thickening of $X$, we compute explicitly the derived self-intersection of $X$ in $S$.
In this article we give a sufficient condition for a morphism $φ$ from a smooth variety $X$ to projective space, finite onto a smooth image, to be deformed to an embedding. This result puts some theorems on deformation of morphisms of curves and surfaces such as $K3$ and general type, obtained by ad hoc methods, in a new, more conceptual light. One of the main interests of our result is to apply it to the construction of smooth varieties in projective space with given invariants. We illustrate this by using our result to construct canonically embedded surfaces with $c_1^2=3p_g-7$ and derive so…
We describe the mod $p^r$ pro $K$-groups $\{K_n(A/I^s)/p^r\}_s$ of a regular local $\mathbb F_p$-algebra $A$ modulo powers of a suitable ideal $I$, in terms of logarithmic Hodge-Witt groups, by proving pro analogues of the theorems of Geisser-Levine and Bloch-Kato-Gabber. This is achieved by combining the pro Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg theorem in topological cyclic homology with the development of the theory of de Rham-Witt complexes and logarithmic Hodge-Witt sheaves on formal schemes in characteristic $p$. Applications include the following: the infinitesimal part of the weak Lefschetz con…
In this paper, we continue our project of defining and studying the infinitesimal versions of the classical, real analytic, invariants of motives. Here, we construct an infinitesimal analog of Bloch's regulator. Let $X/k$ be a scheme of finite type over a field $k$ of characteristic 0. Suppose that $\underline{X} \hookrightarrow X$ is a closed subscheme, smooth over $k,$ and defined by a square-zero sheaf of ideals, which is locally free on $\underline{X}.$ We define two regulators: $ρ_1,$ from the infinitesimal part of the motivic cohomology ${\rm H}^2 _{M}(X,\mathbb{Q}(2))$ of $X$ to ${\rm k…
To any unramified double cover $π:\tilde C \to C$ of projective irreducible and nonsingular curves one associates the Prym variety $P = P(π)$. For $C$ nonhyperelliptic of genus $g \geq 6$ we consider the natural embedding $\tilde C \subset P$ (defined up to translation) of $\tilde C$ into $P$ and we study the local structure of the Hilbert scheme $Hilb^P$ of $P$ at the point $[\tilde C]$. We show that this structure is related with the local geometry of the Prym map, or more precisely with the validity of the infinitesimal version of Torelli's theorem for Pryms at $[π]$
We think about what the subscheme of the formal scheme is. Differently form the ordinary scheme, the formal scheme has different notions of ``subscheme''. We lay a foundation for these notions and compare them. We also relate them to singularities of foliations.
By considering non-trivial global deformations of the Witt (and the Virasoro) algebra given by geometric constructions it is shown that, despite their infinitesimal and formal rigidity, they are globally not rigid. This shows the need of a clear indication of the type of deformations considered. The families appearing are constructed as families of algebras of Krichever-Novikov type. They show up in a natural way in the global operator approach to the quantization of two-dimensional conformal field theory. In addition, a proof of the infinitesimal and formal rigidity of the Witt algebra is pre…
We formulate analogues, for Noetherian local $\mathbb Q$-algebras which are not necessarily regular, of the injectivity part of Gersten's conjecture in algebraic $K$-theory, and prove them in various cases. Our results suggest that the algebraic $K$-theory of such a ring should be detected by combining the algebraic $K$-theory of both its regular locus and the infinitesimal thickenings of its singular locus.
