If the characteristic of a field $k$ is odd any infinitesimal group scheme of $PGL_{2,k}$ lifts to $SL_{2,k}$. In this paper, we prove that this is not true in characteristic $2$ and we give a complete description, up to isomorphism, of infinitesimal unipotent subgroup schemes of $PGL_{2,k}$. Also, the infinitesimal trigonalizable case is considered.
Let $\mathbb{C}$ be the field of complex numbers. Let $k$ be natural number with $k \geq 2$ and let $p$ be a rational prime. In this paper we count the number of conjugacy classes of admissible cyclic subgroups of $\mathrm{PGL}_{k+1}(\mathbb{C})$ of order $p$, where with admissible we intend those finite subgroups that can be contained in the automorphism group of a set of points in $\mathbb{P}^k(\mathbb{C})$ in general position and of cardinality $n\geq k+3$. We also describe a kind of association between the conjugacy classes of these groups and show a beautiful relation connecting this type…
For each finite primitive subgroup $G$ of $\operatorname{PGL}_4(\mathbb{C})$, we find all the smooth $G$-invariant quartic surfaces. We also find all the faithful representations in $\operatorname{PGL}_4(\mathbb{C})$ of the smooth quartic $G$-invariant surfaces by the groups: $\mathfrak{A}_5,\mathfrak{S}_5, \operatorname{PSL_2(\mathbb{F}_7)},\mathfrak{A}_6,\mathbb{Z}_2^4\rtimes\mathbb{Z}_5$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2^4\rtimes D_{10}$. The primitive representation of these groups are precisely the subgroups of $\operatorname{PGL}_4(\mathbb{C})$ for which $\mathbb{P}^3$ is not $G$-super rigid. As a bypro…
Let $G$ be a subgroup of the three dimensional projective group $\mathrm{PGL}(3,q)$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of order $q$, viewed as a subgroup of $\mathrm{PGL}(3,K)$ where $K$ is an algebraic closure of $\mathbb{F}_q$. For the seven nonsporadic, maximal subgroups $G$ of $\mathrm{PGL}(3,q)$, we investigate the (projective, irreducible) plane curves defined over $K$ that are left invariant by $G$. For each, we compute the minimum degree $d(G)$ of $G$-invariant curves, provide a classification of all $G$-invariant curves of degree $d(G)$, and determine the first gap $\varepsilo…
In this paper we characterize the rank two vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^2$ which are invariant under the actions of the parabolic subgroups $G_p:=\mathrm{Stab}_p(\mathrm{PGL}(3))$ fixing a point in the projective plane, $G_L:=\mathrm{Stab}_L(\mathrm{PGL}(3))$ fixing a line, and when $p\in L$, the Borel subgroup $\mathbf{B} = G_p \cap G_L$ of $\mathrm{PGL}(3)$. Moreover, we prove that the geometrical configuration of the jumping locus induced by the invariance does not, on the other hand, characterize the invariance itself. Indeed, we find infinite families that are almost uniform but not almo…
Let $G$ be a subgroup of $S_6$, the symmetric group of degree 6. For any field $k$, $G$ acts naturally on the rational function field $k(x_1,...,x_6)$ via $k$-automorphisms defined by $σ\cdot x_i=x_{σ(i)}$ for any $σ\in G$, any $1\le i\le 6$. Theorem. The fixed field $k(x_1,...,x_6)^G$ is rational (=purely transcendental) over $k$, except possibly when $G$ is isomorphic to $PSL_2(\bm{F}_5)$, $PGL_2(\bm{F}_5)$ or $A_6$. When $G$ is isomorphic to $PSL_2(\bm{F}_5)$ or $PGL_2(\bm{F}_5)$, then $\bm{C}(x_1,...,x_6)^G$ is $\bm{C}$-rational and $k(x_1,...,x_6)^G$ is stably $k$-rational for any field $…
For any field K and any transitive subgroup G of S_8, let G acts naturally on K(x_1, . . ., x_8) by permutations of the variables, we prove that under some minor conditions K(x_1, . . ., x_8)^G is always K-rational except G is A_8 or G is isomorphic to PGL(2, 7). We pay special attentions on the characteristic 2 cases.
We classify finite subgroups $G\subset\mathrm{PGL}_4(\mathbb{C})$ such that $\mathbb{P}^3$ is not $G$-birational to conic bundles and del Pezzo fibrations, and explicitly describe all $G$-Mori fibre spaces that are $G$-birational to $\mathbb{P}^3$ for these subgroups.
Let F be a global field, and let S be a finite set of places of F containing all archimedean places. Consider the product X of the symmetric spaces and Bruhat-Tits buildings for PGL_d of the completions of F at archimedean and non-archimedean places in S, respectively. We construct compactifications of the quotient of X by S-arithmetic subgroups of PGL_d(F). The constructions make delicate use of reductive Borel-Serre spaces for archimedean places and polyhedral and seminorm compactifications at nonarchimedean places. We also briefly discuss a few potential applications of our compacifications…
Let $L$ be the function field of a projective space ${\mathbb P}^n_k$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero, and $H$ be the group of projective transformations. An $H$-sheaf ${\mathcal V}$ on ${\mathbb P}^n_k$ is a collection of isomorphisms ${\mathcal V} \longrightarrow g^{\ast}{\mathcal V}$ for each $g\in H$ satisfying the chain rule. We construct, for any $n>1$, a fully faithful functor from the category of finite-dimensional $L$-semi-linear representations of $H$ extendable to the semi-group ${\rm End}(L/k)$ to the category of coherent $H$-sheaves on ${\mathbb P}^n_…
A Mumford group is a discontinuous subgroup $Γ$ of PGL(2,K), where K denotes a non archimedean valued field, such that the quotient by $Γ$ is a curve of genus 0. As abstract group $Γ$ is an amalgam of a finite tree of finite groups. For K of positive characteristic the large collection of amalgams having two or three branch points is classified. Using these data Mumford curves with a large group of automorphisms are discovered. A long combinatorial proof, involving the classification of the finite simple groups, is needed for establishing an upper bound for the order of the group of automorphi…
Consider the diagonal action of the projective group $\PGL_3$ on $n$ copies of ${\mathbb P}^2$. In addition, consider the action of the symmetric group $Σ_n$ by permuting the copies. In this paper we find a set of generators for the invariant field of the combined group $Σ_n \times \PGL_3$. As the main application, we obtain a reconstruction principle for point configurations in ${\mathbb P}^2$ from their sub-configurations of five points. Finally, we address the question of how such reconstruction principles pass down to subgroups.

Via counting over finite fields, we derive explicit formulas for the E-polynomials and Euler characteristics of GL(d)- and PGL(d)-character varieties of free groups. We prove a positivity property for these polynomials and relate them to the number of subgroups of finite index.
In this paper we study combinatorial invariants of the equivalence classes of pencils of cubics on $\mathrm{PG}(1,q)$, for $q$ odd and $q$ not divisible by 3. These equivalence classes are considered as orbits of lines in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$, under the action of the subgroup $G\cong \mathrm{PGL}(2,q)$ of $\mathrm{PGL}(4,q)$ which preserves the twisted cubic $\mathcal{C}$ in $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$. In particular we determine the point orbit distributions and plane orbit distributions of all $G$-orbits of lines which are contained in an osculating plane of $\mathcal{C}$, have non-empty intersection w…
Let $G$ be a finite abelian subgroup of $PGL(r-1,K)=\mathrm{Aut}(¶^{r-1}_K)$. In this paper, we prove that the normalization of the $G$-orbit Hilbert scheme $\Hilb^G(¶^{r-1})$ is described as a toric variety, which corresponds to the Gröbner fan for some homogeneous ideal $I$ of $K[x_1, ..., x_r]$.
Let $k$ be a field, $n \geqslant 5$ be an integer, $x_1, \dots, x_n$ be independent variables and $L_n = k(x_1, \dots, x_n)$. The symmetric group $S_n$ acts on $L_n$ by permuting the variables, and the projective linear group ${\rm PGL}_2$ acts by applying (the same) fractional linear transformation to each varaible. The fixed field $L_n^{{\rm PGL}_2}$ is called "the field of cross-ratios". Let $S \subset S_n$ be a subgroup. The Noether Problem asks whether the field extension $L_n^S/k$ is rational, and the Noether Problem for cross-ratios asks whether $K_n^S/k$ is rational. In an effort to re…
We compute the dimension of the tangent space to, and the Krull dimension of the pro-representable hull of two deformation functors. The first one is the ``algebraic'' deformation functor of an ordinary curve X over a field of positive charateristic with prescribed action of a finite group G, and the data are computed in terms of the ramification behaviour of X -> G\X. The second one is the ``analytic'' deformation functor of a fixed embedding of a finitely generated discrete group N in PGL(2,K) over a non-archimedean valued field K, and the data are computed in terms of the Bass-Serre represe…
Let $k$ be a field, $x_1, \dots, x_n$ be independent variables and $L_n = k(x_1, \dots, x_n)$. The symmetric group $Σ_n$ acts on $L_n$ by permuting the variables, and the projective linear group $\text{PGL}_2$ acts by \[ \begin{pmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{pmatrix} \colon x_i \mapsto \frac{a x_i + b}{c x_i + d} \] for each $i = 1, \ldots, n$. The fixed field $L_n^{\text{PGL}_2}$ is called "the field of cross-ratios". Given a subgroup $S \subset Σ_n$, H. Tsunogai asked whether $L_n^S$ rational over $K_n^S$. When $n \geqslant 5$ the second author has shown that $L_n^S$ is rational over $K_n^S$ i…
A Mumford curve of genus g (>1) over a non-archimedean valued field k of positive characteristic has at most max{12(g-1), 2 g^(1/2) (g^(1/2)+1)^2} automorphisms. This bound is sharp in the sense that there exist Mumford curves of arbitrary high genus that attain it (they are fibre products of suitable Artin-Schreier curves). The proof provides (via its action on the Bruhat-Tits tree) a classification of discontinuous subgroups of PGL(2,k) that are normalizers of Schottky groups of Mumford curves with more than 12(g-1) automorphisms. As an application, it is shown that all automorphisms of the …
This paper is originally designed as a part of revision of the author's preprint math.AG/9908174 "P-adic Schwarzian triangle groups of Mumford type". Recently, Yves Andr'e pointed out a flaw in that preprint; more precisely, Proposition II there was not correct, and consequently, as he pointed out, some triangle groups are missing (but only in p=2,3,5). I apologize to the readers, and will release the other part soon by the original title. In this paper, we concentrate on the constructive part, but more systematically and in more general situation. More precisely, this paper presents a complet…
Problem: Given a reductive algebraic group G, find all k-tuples of parabolic subgroups (P_1,...,P_k) such that the product of flag varieties G/P_1 x ... x G/P_k has finitely many orbits under the diagonal action of G. In this case we call G/P_1 x ... x G/P_k a multiple flag variety of finite type. (If P_1 is a Borel subgroup, the partial product G/P_2 x ... x G/P_k is a spherical variety.) In this paper we solve this problem in the case of the symplectic group G = Sp(2n). We also give a complete enumeration of the orbits, and explicit representatives for them. (It is well known that for k=2 th…
