Let $L$ be the function field of a projective space ${\mathbb P}^n_k$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero, and $H$ be the group of projective transformations. An $H$-sheaf ${\mathcal V}$ on ${\mathbb P}^n_k$ is a collection of isomorphisms ${\mathcal V} \longrightarrow g^{\ast}{\mathcal V}$ for each $g\in H$ satisfying the chain rule.
We construct, for any $n>1$, a fully faithful functor from the category of finite-dimensional $L$-semi-linear representations of $H$ extendable to the semi-group ${\rm End}(L/k)$ to the category of coherent $H$-sheaves on ${\mathbb P}^n_k$.
The paper is motivated by a study of admissible representations of the automorphism group $G$ of an algebraically closed extension of $k$ of countable transcendence degree undertaken in \cite{rep}. The semi-group ${\rm End}(L/k)$ is considered as a subquotient of $G$, hence the condition on extendability.
In the appendix it is shown that, if $\tilde{H}$ is either $H$, or a bigger subgroup in the Cremona group (generated by $H$ and a standard involution), then any semi-linear $\tilde{H}$-representation of degree one is an integral $L$-tensor power of $\det_LΩ^1_{L/k}$. It is shown also that this bigger subgroup has no non-trivial representations of finite degree if $n>1$.
We give combinatorial models for complex, smooth, non-spherical, generic, irreducible representations of the group G=PGL(2,F), where F is a non-archimedean locally compact field. They use the graphs X_k lying above the tree of G, introduced in a previous work. We show that such representations may be realized as quotients of the cohomology of X_k for some k, or equivalently as spaces of discrete harmonic forms on X_k. For supercuspidal representations these models are unique.
We compute by a purely local method the elliptic, twisted by transpose-inverse, character χ_πof the representation π=I_{(3,1)}(1_3) of PGL(4,F) normalizedly induced from the trivial representation of the maximal parabolic subgroup of type (3,1), where F is a p-adic field. Put C=(GL(2,F)xGL(2,F))'/F^x (F^x embeds diagonally, prime means equal determinants). It is a twisted elliptic endoscopic group of PGL(4). We deduce from the computation that χ_πis an unstable function: its value at one twisted regular elliptic conjugacy class with norm in C is minus its value at the other class within the tw…
We show that almost all (Bushnell and Kutzko) types of PGL(2,F), F a non-Archimedean locally compact field of odd residue characteristic, naturally appear in the cohomology of finite graphs.
We classify representations of a class of Deligne-Mostow lattices into PGL(3;C). In particular, we show local rigidity for the representations (of Deligne-Mostow lattices with 3-fold symmetry and of type one) where the generators we chose are of the same type as the generators of Deligne-Mostow lattices. We also show local rigidity without constraints on the type of generators for six of them and we show the existence of local deformations for a number of representations in three of them. We use formal computations in SAGE and Maple to obtain the results. The code files are available on GitHub…
Let $V$ and $V'$ be vector spaces over division rings (possible infinite-dimensional) and let ${\mathcal P}(V)$ and ${\mathcal P}(V')$ be the associated projective spaces. We say that $f:{\mathcal P}(V)\to {\mathcal P}(V')$ is a PGL-{\it mapping} if for every $h\in {\rm PGL}(V)$ there exists $h'\in {\rm PGL}(V')$ such that $fh=h'f$. We show that for every PGL-bijection the inverse mapping is a semicollineation. Also, we obtain an analogue of this result for the projective spaces associated to normed spaces.
We complete the classification of type preserving representations of Deligne-Mostow lattices with 3-fold symmetry into PGL(3,C) started in arXiv:2003.06466. In particular, we show local rigidity for all the representations where the generators we chose are of the same type as the generators of the Deligne-Mostow lattices. We use formal computations in SAGE and MAPLE to obtain the results. The code files are available on GitHub.
Let $F$ be a non-Archimedean local field. Let $G$ be an algebraic group over $F$. A $G$-variety $X$ defined over $F$ is said to be multiplicity-free if for any admissible irreducible representation $π$ of $G(F)$ the following takes place: $\dim Hom_{G(F)}(\mathcal{S}(X(F)), π) \le 1$ where $\mathcal{S}(X(F))$ is the space of Schwartz functions on $X(F)$. In this thesis we prove that $\mathbb{P}\mathfrak{gl}_{2}(F)$ is multiplicity-free as a $PGL_{2}(F)\times PGL_{2}(F)$-variety.
We relate the "Fourier" orbital integrals of corresponding spherical functions on the p-adic groups SO(5) and PGL(2). The correspondence is defined by a "lifting" of representations of these groups. This is a local "fundamental lemma" needed to compare the geometric sides of the global Fourier summation formulae (or relative trace formulae) on these two groups. This comparison leads to conclusions about a well known lifting of representations from PGL(2) to PGSp(4). This lifting produces counter examples to the Ramanujan conjecture.
We recall the relation between Zeta function representation of groups and two-dimensional topological Yang-Mills theory through Mednikh formula. We prove various generalisations of Mednikh formulas and define generalization of Zeta functions representations of groups. We compute some of these functions in the case of the finite group $GL(2, {\mathbb F}_q)$ and $PGL(2,{\mathbb F}_q).$ We recall the table characters of these groups for any $q$, compute the Frobenius-Schur indicator of their irreducible representations and give the explicit structure of their fusion rings
The zeta function attached to a finite complex $X_Γ$ arising from the Bruhat-Tits building for $\PGL_3(F)$ was studied in \cite{KL}, where a closed form expression was obtained by a combinatorial argument. This identity can be rephrased using operators on vertices, edges, and directed chambers of $X_Γ$. In this paper we reprove the zeta identity from a different aspect by analyzing the eigenvalues of these operators using representation theory. As a byproduct, we obtain equivalent criteria for a Ramanujan complex in terms of the eigenvalues of the operators on vertices, edges, and directed cha…
In this paper we are interested in computing representations of the fundamental group of a 3-manifold into PSL(3;C) (in particular in PSL(2;C); PSL(3;R) and PU(2; 1)). The representations are obtained by gluing decorated tetrahedra of flags. We list complete computations (giving 0-dimensional or 1-dimensional solution sets) for the first complete hyperbolic non-compact manifolds with finite volume which are obtained gluing less than three tetrahedra with a description of the computer methods used to find them.
In this paper, we give a new realization of the local Langlands correspondence for PGL(2,F), where F is a p-adic field of odd residual characteristic. In this case, supercuspidal representations of PGL(2,F) are parameterized by characters of elliptic tori. Taking a cue from real groups, we propose that supercuspidal representations are naturally parameterized by characters of covers of tori. Over the reals, Harish-Chandra defined the discrete series representations by specifying their characters restricted to an elliptic torus, and these characters may naturally be expressed in terms of charac…
We use the twisted topological trace formula developed in an earlier paper to understand liftings from symplectic to general linear groups. We analyse the lift from $\SP_{2g}$ to $\PGL_{2g+1}$ over the ground field $\Q$ in further detail, and we get a description of the image of this lift for the $L^2$ cohomology of $\SP_{2g}$ (which is related to the intersection cohomology of the Shimura variety attached to $\GSp_{2g}$) in terms of the Eisenstein cohomology of the general linear group, whose building constituents are cuspidal representations of Levi groups. This description may be used to un…
In this note, using a representation theoretic method of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro, we prove the Kuznetsov trace formula for an arbitrary discrete group $Γ$ in $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ that is cofinite but not cocompact. An essential ingredient is a kernel formula, recently proved by the author, on Bessel functions for $\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{C})$. This approach avoids the difficult analysis in the existing method due to Bruggeman and Motohashi.
In this note we prove the classical decomposition theorems for certain subgroups of the automorphism group of the Bruhat-Tits tree associated to $\mathrm{PGL}_{2}(F)$, where $F$ is a local field. The results can be used to understand the representation theory of these subgroups. Moreover, we can also use the results to obtain similar decompositions for \textit{any} closed transitive subgroup of the automorphism group of \textit{any} Bruhat-Tits tree.
We provide a purely local computation of the (elliptic) twisted (by "transpose-inverse") character of the representation π=I(\1) of PGL(3) over a p-adic field induced from the trivial representation of the maximal parabolic subgroup. This computation is independent of the theory of the symmetric square lifting of [IV] of automorphic and admissible representations of SL(2) to PGL(3). It leads to a proof of the (unstable) fundamental lemma in the theory of the symmetric square lifting, namely that corresponding spherical functions (on PGL(2) and PGL(3)) are matching: they have matching orbital i…
Let $F$ be a local non-archimedian field, $G$ a semisimple $F$-group, $dg$ a Haar measure on $G$ and $\mathcal S(G)$ be the space of locally constant complex valued functions $f$ on $G$ with compact support. For any regular elliptic congugacy class $Ω=h^G\subset G$ we denote by $I_Ω$ the $G$-invariant functional on $\mathcal S (G)$ given by $$I_Ω(f)=\int_G f(g^{-1}hg)dg$$ This paper provides the spectral decomposition of functionals $I_Ω$ in the case $G=PGL(2,F)$ and in the last section first steps of such an analysis for the general case.
For a local field $F$ and an Artinian local coefficient ring $Λ$ with the same positive residue characteristic $p$ we define, for any $e\in{\mathbb N}$, a category ${\mathfrak C}^{(e)}(Λ)$ of ${\rm GL}_2(F)$-equivariant coefficient systems on the Bruhat-Tits tree $X$ of ${\rm PGL}_2(F)$. There is an obvious functor from the category of ${\rm GL}_2(F)$-representations over $Λ$ to ${\mathfrak C}^{(e)}(Λ)$. If $F={\mathbb Q}_p$ then ${\mathfrak C}^{(1)}(Λ)$ is equivalent to the category of smooth ${\rm GL}_2({\mathbb Q}_p)$-representations over $Λ$ generated by their invariants under a pro-$p$-Iw…
Given an algebraic variety $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$ with stabilizer $H$, the quotient $PGL_{N+1}/H$ can be interpreted a parameter space for all $PGL_{N+1}$-translates of $X$. We define $X$ to be a $\textit{homogeneous variety}$ if $H$ acts on it transitively, and satisfies a few other properties, such as $H$ being semisimple. Some examples of homogeneous varieties are quadric hypersurfaces, rational normal curves, and Veronese and Segre embeddings. In this case, we construct new compactifications of the parameter spaces $PGL_{N+1}/H$, obtained compactifying $PGL_{N+1}$ to the classically known …
We describe a new method to estimate the trilinear period on automorphic representations of PGL(2,R). Such a period gives rise to a special value of the triple L-function. We prove a bound for the triple period which amounts to a subconvexity bound for the corresponding special value of the triple L-function. Our method is based on the study of the analytic structure of the corresponding unique trilinear functional on unitary representations of PGL(2,R).
In this note we prove that the Borel class of representations of 3-manifold groups to PGL(n,C) is preserved under Cartan involution up to sign. For representations to PGL(3,C) this is implied by a more general result of E. Falbel and Q. Wang, however our proof appears to be much shorter for that special case.
We describe a new method to estimate the trilinear period on automorphic representations of PGL(2,R). Such a period gives rise to a special value of the triple L-function. We prove a bound for the triple period which amounts to a subconvexity bound for the corresponding special value. Our method is based on the study of the analytic structure of the corresponding unique trilinear functional on unitary representations of PGL(2,R).
In this paper we construct a Rankin-Selberg integral which represents the Spin_10 x St L-function attached to the group GSO_10 x PGL_2. We use this integral representation to give some equivalent conditions for a generic cuspidal representation on GSO_10 to be a functorial lift from the group G_2 x PGL_2.
We study irreducible representations of the Hecke algebra of the pair $({\rm PGL}_2 (F[ε] / (ε^2)) , {\rm PGL}_2 (\mathcal{O}[ε] / (ε^2)))$ where $F$ is a local non-Archimedean field of characteristic different than $2$ and $\mathcal{O} \subset F$ is its ring of integers. We expect to apply our analysis to the study of the spectrum of Hecke operators on the space of cuspidal functions on the space of principal ${\rm PGL}_2$-bundles on curves over rings $\mathbb{F}_q [ε] / (ε^2)$.
The local Langlands conjectures imply that to every generic supercuspidal irreducible representation of $G_2$ over a $p$-adic field, one can associate a generic supercuspidal irreducible representation of either $PGSp_6$ or$PGL_3$. We prove this conjectural dichotomy, demonstrating a precise correspondence between certain representations of $G_2$ and other representations of $PGSp_6$ and $PGL_3$. This correspondence arises from theta correspondences in $E_6$ and $E_7$, analysis of Shalika functionals, and spin L-functions. Our main result reduces the conjectural Langlands parameterization of g…
In the paper "Pappus's theorem and the modular group", R. Schwartz constructed a 2-dimensional family of faithful representations $ρ_Θ$ of the modular group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ into the group $\mathscr{G}$ of projective symmetries of the projective plane via Pappus Theorem. The image of the unique index 2 subgroup $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})_o$ of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ under each representation $ρ_Θ$ is in the subgroup $\mathrm{PGL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ of $\mathscr{G}$ and preserves a topological circle in the flag variety, but $ρ_Θ$ is not Anosov. In her PhD Thesis, V. P. Valério e…
We relate the analytic conductor of a generic irreducible representation of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ to the invariance properties of vectors in that representation. The relationship is an analytic archimedean analogue of some aspects of the classical non-archimedean newvector theory of Casselman and Jacquet--Piatetski-Shapiro--Shalika. We illustrate how this relationship may be applied in trace formulas to majorize sums over automorphic forms on $\mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{Z}) \backslash \mathrm{PGL}_n(\mathbb{R})$ ordered by analytic conductor.
We adapt methods from quiver representation theory and Hall algebra techniques to the counting of representations of virtually free groups over finite fields. This gives rise to the computation of the E-polynomials of $\mathbf{GL}_d(\mathbb{C})$-character varieties of virtually free groups. As examples we discuss the representation theory of $\mathbb{D}_\infty$ , $\mathbf{PSL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ , $\mathbf{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ , $\mathbf{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and $\mathbf{PGL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$ .
Let $Γ$ be a surface group of higher genus. Let $ρ\_0: Γ\to {PGL}(V)$ be a discrete faithful representation with image contained in the natural embedding of ${SL}(2, {\mathbb R})$ in ${PGL}(3, {\mathbb R})$ as a group preserving a point and a disjoint projective line in the projective plane. We prove that such a representation is $(G,Y)$-Anosov (following the terminology of \cite{labourieanosov}), where $Y$ is the frame bundle. More generally, we prove that all the deformations $ρ: Γ\to {PGL}(3, {\mathbb R})$ studied in \cite{barflag} are $(G,Y)$-Anosov. As a corollary, we obtain all the main …
Let $G=PSL(2,\mathbb{R})$, let $Γ$ be a lattice in $G$, and let $\mathcal{H}$ be an irreducible unitary representation of $G$ with square-integrable matrix coefficients. A theorem in [Goodman, de la Harpe, Jones 1989] states that the von Neumann dimension of $\mathcal{H}$ as a $RΓ$-module is equal to the formal dimension of the discrete series representation $\mathcal{H}$ times the covolume of $Γ$, calculated with respect to the same Haar measure. We prove two results inspired by this theorem. First, we show there is a representation of $RΓ_2$ on a subspace of cuspidal automorphic functions in…
Let G=GL(n,q), SL(n,q) or PGL(n,q) where q is a power of some prime number p, let U denote a Sylow p-subgroup of G and let R be a commutative ring in which p is invertible. Let D(U) denote the derived subgroup of U and let e be the central primitive idempotent of the group algebra RD(U) corresponding to the projection on the invariant RD(U)-submodule. The aim of this note is to prove that the R-algebras RG and eRGe are Morita equivalent (through the natural functor sending an RG-module M to the eRGe-module eM).
Let $G$ be a finite reductive group defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$, with $q$ a power of a prime $p$. Motivated by a problem recently posed by C. Curtis, we first develop an algorithm to express each element of $G$ into a canonical form in terms of a refinement of a Bruhat decomposition, and we then use the output of the algorithm to explicitly determine the structure constants of the endomorphism algebra of a Gelfand-Graev representation of $G$ when $G=\mathrm{PGL}_3(q)$ for an arbitrary prime $p$, and when $G=\mathrm{SO}_5(q)$ for $p$ odd.
We consider the restriction to $SL_2({\mathbb Q}_p)$ of an irreducible $p$-adic unitary Banach space representation $Π$ of $GL_2({\mathbb Q}_p)$. If $Π$ is associated, via the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence, to an absolutely irreducible 2-dimensional Galois representation $ψ$, then the restriction of $Π$ decomposes as a direct sum of $r \le 2$ irreducible representations. The main result of this paper is that $r$ is equal to the cardinality $s$ of the centralizer in $PGL_2$ of the projective Galois representation $\overlineψ$ associated to $ψ$, and the restriction is multiplicity-free…
Let $F$ be a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic $0$ and residue field of order not divisible by $2$. We show how to calculate the product of the covolume of a torsion-free lattice in $PGL(2,F)$ and the formal dimension of a discrete series representation of $GL(2,F)$. The covolume comes from a theorem of Ihara, and the formal dimensions are contained in results of Corwin, Moy, and Sally. By a theorem going back to Atiyah, and by triviality of the second cohomology group of a free group, the resulting product is the von Neumann dimension of a discrete series representation considered …
We develop the theory of semisimplifications of tensor categories defined by Barrett and Westbury. In particular, we compute the semisimplification of the category of representations of a finite group in characteristic $p$ in terms of representations of the normnalizer of its Sylow $p$-subgroup. This allows us to compute the semisimplification of the representation category of the symmetric group $S_{n+p}$ in characteristic $p$, where $0\le n\le p-1$, and of the Deligne category $\underline{\rm Rep}^{\rm ab}S_t$, where $t\in \Bbb N$. We also compute the semisimplification of the category of re…
Let $V$ be a left vector space over a division ring and let ${\mathcal P}(V)$ be the associated projective space. We describe all finite subsets $X\subset V$ such that every permutation on $X$ can be extended to a linear automorphism of $V$ and all finite subsets ${\mathcal X}\subset {\mathcal P}(V)$ such that every permutation on ${\mathcal X}$ can be extended to an element of ${\rm PGL}(V)$. Also, we reformulate the results in terms of linear and projective representations of symmetric groups.
Let $G$ and $\tilde G$ be reductive groups over a local field $F$. Let $η: \tilde G \to G$ be a $F$-homomorphism with commutative kernel and commutative cokernel. We investigate the pullbacks of irreducible admissible $G$-representations $π$ along $η$. Following Borel, Adler--Korman and Xu, we pose a conjecture on the decomposition of the pullback $η^* π$. It is formulated in terms of enhanced Langlands parameters and includes multiplicities. This can be regarded as a functoriality property of the local Langlands correspondence. We prove this conjecture for three classes: principal series repr…
We use the representation theory of the quasisplit form G of SU(3) over a p-adic field to investigate whether certain quotients of the Bruhat--Tits tree associated to this form are Ramanujan bigraphs. We show that a quotient of the tree associated with G (which is a biregular bigraph) is Ramanujan if and only if G satisfies a Ramanujan type conjecture. This result is analogous to the seminal case of PGL(2) considered by Lubotzky-Phillips-Sarnak. As a consequence, the classification by Rogawski of the automorphic spectrum of U(3) implies the existence of certain infinite families of Ramanujan b…
Let $G$ be a finite group with given subgroups $H$ and $K$. Let $π$ be an irreducible complex representation of $G$ such that its space of $H$-invariant vectors as well as the space of $K$-invariant vectors are both one dimensional. Let $v_H$ (resp. $v_K$) denote an $H$-invariant (resp. $K$-invariant) vector of unit norm in the standard $G$-invariant inner product $\langle ~,~ \rangle_π$ on $π$. Our interest is in computing the square of the absolute value of $\langle v_H,v_K \rangle_π$. This is the correlation constant $c(π;H,K)$ defined by Gross. In this paper, we give a sufficient condition…
Let $G$ be a unimodular locally compact group. We define a property of irreducible unitary $G$-representations $V$ which we call c-temperedness, and which for the trivial $V$ boils down to Følner's condition (equivalent to the trivial $V$ being tempered, i.e. to $G$ being amenable). The property of c-temperedness is a-priori stronger than the property of temperedness. We conjecture that for semisimple groups over local fields temperedness implies c-temperedness. We check the conjecture for a special class of tempered $V$'s, as well as for all tempered $V$'s in the cases of $G := SL_2 (\mathbb{…
