We describe a new method to estimate the trilinear period on automorphic representations of PGL(2,R). Such a period gives rise to a special value of the triple L-function. We prove a bound for the triple period which amounts to a subconvexity bound for the corresponding special value. Our method is based on the study of the analytic structure of the corresponding unique trilinear functional on unitary representations of PGL(2,R).

In this paper, we establish bounds of the Rankin-Selberg $L$-function for $SL(2)$ using the supnorm of the Eisenstein series and a purely representation theoretic index over the real group. Consequently, we obtain a subconvexity bound $L(\frac{1}{2}+ it, f_1 \times f_2) \leq C (1+ |t|)^{\frac{5}{6}+ε}$ for two Maass cusp forms of $SL(2, \mathbb Z)$.
We consider periods of automorphic representations of adele groups defined by integrals along Gelfand subgroups. We define natural maps between local components of such periods and construct corresponding global maps using automorphic $L$-functions. This leads to an introduction of a global invariant of an automorphic representation arising from two such periods. We compute this invariant in some cases.

We study GL_2(F)-invariant periods on representations of GL_2(A), where F is a nonarchimedean local field and A/F a product of field extensions of total degree 3. For irreducible representations, a theorem of Prasad shows that the space of such periods has dimension at most 1, and is non-zero when a certain epsilon-factor condition holds. We give an extension of this result to a certain class of reducible representations (of Whittaker type), extending results of Harris--Scholl when A is the split algebra F x F x F.
Given irreducible representations $Π$ and $π$ of the rank one special orthogonal groups $G=SO(n+1,1)$ and $G'=SO(n,1)$ with nonsingular integral infinitesimal character, we state in terms of $θ$-stable parameter necessary and sufficient conditions so that \[ \operatorname{Hom}_{G'}(Π|_{G'}, π)\not = \{0\}. \] In the special case that both $Π$ and $π$ are tempered, this implies the Gross--Prasad conjectures for tempered representations of $SO(n+1,1) \times SO(n,1)$ which are nontrivial on the center. We apply these results to construct nonzero periods and distinguished representations. If both …
We further develop and simplify the general theory of distinguished tame supercuspidal representations of reductive $p$-adic groups due to Hakim and Murnaghan, as well as the analogous theory for finite reductive groups due to Lusztig. We apply our results to study the representations of ${\rm GL}_n(F)$, with $n$ odd and $F$ a nonarchimedean local field, that are distinguished with respect to an orthogonal group in $n$ variables. In particular, we determine precisely when a supercuspidal representation is distinguished with respect to an orthogonal group and, if so, that the space of distingui…
By applying the formula for essential Whittaker functions established by Matringe and Miyauchi, we study five integral representations for irreducible admissible generic representations of ${\rm GL}_n$ over $p$-adic fields. In each case, we show that the integrals achieve local formal $L$-functions defined by Langlands parameters, when the test vector is associated to the newform. We give the relation between local periods involving essential Whittaker functions and special values of formal $L$-factors at $s=1$ for certain distinguished or unitary representations. The period integrals are also…
In this paper we study the question of determining when an irreducible admissible representation of ${\rm GL}_n(D)$ admits a symplectic model, that is when such a representation has a linear functional invariant under ${\rm Sp}_n(D)$, where $D$ is a quaternion division algebra over a non-Archimedian local field $k$ and ${\rm Sp}_{n}(D)$ is the unique non-split inner form of the symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(k)$. We show that if a representation has a symplectic model it is necessarily unique. For ${\rm GL}_2(D)$ we completely classify those representations which have a symplectic model. Glob…
We show that every irreducible representation in the discrete automorphic spectrum of GL(n) admits a non vanishing mixed (Whittaker-symplectic) period integral. The analog local problem is a study of models first considered by Klyachko over a finite field. Locally, we show that for a p-adic field F every irreducible, unitary representation of GL(n,F) has a Klyachko model.
Let E/F be a quadratic extension of number fields. For a cuspidal representation $π$ of SL(2,A_E), we study the non-vanishing of the period integral on SL(2,F)\SL(2,A_F). We characterise the non-vanishing of the period integral of $π$ in terms of $π$ being generic with respect to characters of E\A_E which are trivial on A_F. We show that the period integral in general is not a product of local invariant functionals, and find a necessary and sufficient condition when it is. We exhibit cuspidal representations of SL(2,A_E) whose period integral vanishes identically while each local constituent a…
We consider distinction of representations in the context of $p$-adic Galois symmetric spaces. We provide new sufficient conditions for distinction of parabolically induced representations in terms of similar conditions on the inducing data and deduce a characterization for distinction of representations parabolically induced from cuspidal. We explicate the results further for classical groups and give several applications, in particular, concerning the preservation of distinction via Langlands functoriality. We relate our results with a conjecture of Dipendra Prasad.
By the unfolding method, Rankin-Selberg L-functions for ${\rm GL}(n)\times{\rm GL}(m)$ can be expressed in terms of period integrals. These period integrals actually define invariant forms on tensor products of the relevant automorphic representations. By the multiplicity-one theorems due to Sun-Zhu and Chen-Sun such invariant forms are unique up to scalar multiples and can therefore be related to invariant forms on equivalent principal series representations. We construct meromorphic families of such invariant forms for spherical principal series representations of ${\rm GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ an…
Let $F$ be a local non-Archimedean field of characteristic zero with a finite residue field. Based on Tadić's classification of the unitary dual of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(F)$, we classify irreducible unitary representations of $\mathrm{GL}_{2n}(F)$ that have nonzero linear periods, in terms of Speh representations that have nonzero periods. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a nonzero linear period for a Speh representation.
Let $(G,H)$ be a symmetric pair over a $p$-adic field and $π$ a discrete series representation of $G$. In this paper, for some type of symmetric pairs $(G,H)$, we show that local periods in $Hom_H(π,\mathbb{C})$ can be constructed by integrating the matrix coefficients of $π$ over $H$.
Let $G$ be a $p$-adic reductive group and $H$ a unimodular spherical subgroup of $G$. Let $π$ be a unitary supercuspidal representation of $G$. In this note, under a mild assumption, we show that local periods in $Hom_H(π,\mathbb{C})$ can be constructed by integrating the matrix coefficients of $π$ over $H$.
The main aim of this paper is to classify the irreducible admissible representations of ${\rm GL}_{4}(F)$ and ${\rm GL}_{6}(F)$ for a nonarchimedean local field $F$, which bear a nontrivial linear form invariant under the groups ${\rm Sp}_{4}(F)$ and ${\rm Sp}_{6}(F)$ respectively. We propose a few conjectures for the general case.
Let $F$ be a non archimedean local field, and $n_1$ and $n_2$ two positive even integers. We prove that if $π_1$ and $π_2$ are two smooth representations of $GL(n_1,F)$ and $GL(n_2,F)$ respectively, both admitting a Shalika period, then the normalised parabolically induced representation $π_1\times π_2$ also admits a Shalika period. Combining this with the results of \cite{M-localBF}, we obtain as a corollary the classification of generic representations of $GL(n,F)$ admitting a Shalika period when $F$ has characteristic zero. This result is relevant to the study of the Jacquet-Shalika exterio…
Using linear periods on the mirabolic subgroup of $GL(n,F)$, for $F$ a non archimedean local field, we give a list of the maximal Levi subgroups of $GL(n,F)$ which can distinguish a discrete series, and a generic representation. We also obtain the functional equation of the local exterior-square $L$-function of a generic representation of $GL(n,F)$ when $n=2m$ is even. Then we discuss the relation between Shalika models and local models for representations of $GL(2m,F)$. Finally we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the cuspidal representation $ρ$ for a generalised Steinberg represen…
Let $π'$ be a cuspidal automorphic representation of $GL_{2n}$, which is assumed to be the Jacquet-Langlands transfer from a cuspidal automorphic representation $π$ of $GL_{2m}(D)$, where $D$ is a division algebra so that $GL_{2m}(D)$ is an inner form of $GL_{2n}$. In this paper, we consider the relation between linear periods on $π$ and $π'$. We conjecture that the non-vanishing of the linear period on $π$ would imply the non-vanishing of that on $π'$. We illustrate an approach using a relative trace formula towards this conjecture, and prove the existence of smooth transfer over non-archimed…
We use the relations between the base change representations, theta lifts and Whittaker model, to give a new proof to the period problems of $GL(2)$ over a quadratic local field extension $E/F.$ And we classify both local and global $D^\times(F)-$distinguished representations $π^D$ of $D^\times(E),$ where $D^\times$ is an inner form of $GL_2$ defined over a nonarchimedean field or a number field $F.$
Hodge representations were introduced by Green-Griffiths-Kerr to classify the Hodge groups of polarized Hodge structures, and the corresponding Mumford-Tate subdomains of a period domain. The purpose of this article is to provide an exposition of how, given a fixed period domain $\mathcal{D}$, to enumerate the Hodge representations corresponding to Mumford-Tate subdomains $D \subset \mathcal{D}$. After reviewing the well-known classical cases that $\mathcal{D}$ is Hermitian symmetric (weight $n=1$, and weight $n=2$ with $p_g = h^{2,0}=1$), we illustrate this in the case that $\mathcal{D}$ is t…
An FI-module $V$ over a commutative ring $\bf{k}$ encodes a sequence $(V_n)_{n \geq 0}$ of representations of the symmetric groups $(\mathfrak{S}_n)_{n \geq 0}$ over $\bf{k}$. In this paper, we show that for a "finitely generated" FI-module $V$ over a field of characteristic $p$, the cohomology groups $H^t(\mathfrak{S}_n, V_n)$ are eventually periodic in $n$. We describe a recursive way to calculate the period and the periodicity range and show that the period is always a power of $p$. As an application, we show that if $\mathcal{M}$ is a compact, connected, oriented manifold of dimension $\ge…
