Let G be a group, F a field of prime characteristic p and V a finite-dimensional FG-module. Let L(V) denote the free Lie algebra on V regarded as an FG-submodule of the free associative algebra (or tensor algebra) T(V). For each positive integer r, let L^r(V) and T^r(V) be the rth homogeneous components of L(V) and T(V), respectively. Here L^r(V) is called the rth Lie power of V. Our main result is that there are submodules B_1, B_2, ... of L(V) such that, for all r, B_r is a direct summand of T^r(V) and, whenever m \geq 0 and k is not divisible by p, $$ L^{p^mk}(V) = L^{p^m}(B_k) \oplus L^{p^{m-1}}(B_{pk}) \oplus ... \oplus L^p(B_{p^{m-1}k}) \oplus L^1(B_{p^mk}). $$ Thus every Lie power is a direct sum of Lie powers of p-power degree. The approach builds on an analysis of T^r(V) as a bimodule for G and the Solomon descent algebra.
We obtain minimal dimension matrix representations for each of the Lie algebras of dimension five, six, seven, and eight obtained by Turkowski that have a non-trivial Levi decomposition. The Key technique involves using subspace associated to a particular representation of semi-simple Lie algebra to help in the construction of the radical in the putative Levi decomposition.
By using of Euler's difference table, we obtain simple explicit formula for the decomposition of $k$-th tensor power of adjoint representation of $A_n$ Lie algebra at $2 k \le{n+1}$.
We determine approximations to the decomposition matrices for unipotent $\ell$-blocks of several series of finite reductive groups of classical and exceptional type over $\FF_q$ of low rank in non-defining good characteristic~$\ell$.
We prove that if $\mathfrak{s}$ is a solvable Lie algebra of matrices over a field of characteristic 0, and $A\in\mathfrak{s}$, then the semisimple and nilpotent summands of the Jordan-Chevalley decomposition of $A$ belong to $\mathfrak{s}$ if and only if there exist $S,N\in\mathfrak{s}$, $S$ is semisimple, $N$ is nilpotent (not necessarily $[S,N]=0$) such that $A=S+N$.
There exist principal $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ subalgebras for hyperbolic Kac-Moody Lie algebras. In the case of rank 2 symmetric hyperbolic Kac-Moody Lie algebras, certain $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ subalgebras are constructed. These subalgebras are generalizations of principal $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ subalgebras. We show that the rank 2 symmetric hyperbolic Kac-Moody Lie algebras themselves are irreducibly decomposed under the action of this $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ subalgebras. Furthermore, we classify irreducible components of the decomposition. In particular, we obtain multiplicities of unitary principal series and c…
For every finite dimensional Lie supergroup $(G,\mathfrak g)$, we define a $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal A:=\mathcal A(G,\mathfrak g)$, and show that there exists a canonical bijective correspondence between unitary representations of $(G,\mathfrak g)$ and nondegenerate $*$-representations of $\mathcal A$. The proof of existence of such a correspondence relies on a subtle characterization of smoothing operators of unitary representations. For a broad class of Lie supergroups, which includes nilpotent as well as classical simple ones, we prove that the associated $C^*$-algebra is CCR. In particular, …
Let $\g$ be a finite dimensional Lie algebra over a field $k$ of characteristic zero. An element $x$ of $\g$ is said to have an \emph{abstract Jordan-Chevalley decomposition} if there exist unique $s,n\in\g$ such that $x=s+n$, $[s,n]=0$ and given any finite dimensional representation $π:\g\to\gl(V)$ the Jordan-Chevalley decomposition of $π(x)$ in $\gl(V)$ is $π(x)=π(s)+π(n)$. In this paper we prove that $x\in\g$ has an abstract Jordan-Chevalley decomposition if and only if $x\in [\g,\g]$, in which case its semisimple and nilpotent parts are also in $[\g,\g]$ and are explicitly determined. We d…
We discuss Cauchy type decompositions of crystal graphs for general linear Lie superalgebras. More precisely, we consider bicrystal graph structures on various sets of matrices of non-negative integers, and obtain their decompositions with explicit combinatorial isomorphisms.
Späth showed that the Alperin-McKay conjecture in the representation theory of finite groups holds if the so-called inductive Alperin-McKay condition holds for all finite simple groups. In a previous article, we showed that the Bonnafé-Rouquier equivalence for blocks of finite groups of Lie type can be lifted to include automorphisms of groups of Lie type. We use our results to reduce the verification of the inductive condition for groups of Lie type to quasi-isolated blocks.
The Iwasawa decomposition $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{k}_0 \oplus \hat{\mathfrak{a}}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{n}_0$ of the real semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_0$ comes from its Cartan decomposition $\mathfrak{g}_0=\mathfrak{k}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{p}_0$. Then we get $\mathfrak{g}_0=\mathfrak{k}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{b}_0$ where $\mathfrak{b}_0=\hat{\mathfrak{a}}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{n}_0$. The question of knowing if the index were additive in the decomposition $\mathfrak{g}_0=\mathfrak{k}_0 \oplus \mathfrak{b}_0$ goes back M. Raïs \cite{Rais}. In \cite{Moreau3}, I wrote that the index always is additive …
We set up an abstract framework that allows the investigation of Iwasawa decompositions for involutive infinite-dimensional Lie groups modeled on Banach spaces. As an application, we construct Iwasawa decompositions for classical real or complex Banach-Lie groups associated with the Schatten ideals ${\mathfrak S}_p({\mathcal H})$ on a complex separable Hilbert space ${\mathcal H}$ if $1<p<\infty$.
Let $(G,τ)$ be a finite-dimensional Lie group with an involutive automorphism $τ$ of $G$ and let $\mathfrak g = \mathfrak h \oplus \mathfrak q $ be its corresponding Lie algebra decomposition. We show that every non-degenerate strongly continuous representation on a complex Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ of an open $*$-subsemigroup $S \subset G$, where $s^* = τ(s)^{-1}$, has an analytic extension to a strongly continuous unitary representation of the 1-connected Lie group $G_1^c$ with Lie algebra $[\mathfrak q,\mathfrak q] \oplus i\mathfrak q$. We further examine the minimal conditions under which…
We study the category $\mathcal{F}_n$ of finite-dimensional integrable representations of the periplectic Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{p}(n)$. We define an action of the Temperley--Lieb algebra with infinitely many generators and defining parameter $0$ on the category $\mathcal{F}_n$ by translation functors. We also introduce combinatorial tools, called weight diagrams and arrow diagrams for $\mathfrak{p}(n)$ resembling those for $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$. Using the Temperley--Lieb algebra action and the combinatorics of weight and arrow diagrams, we then calculate the multiplicities of standard and…
Suppose that W is a finite, unitary, reflection group acting on the complex vector space V and X is a subspace of V. Define N to be the setwise stabilizer of X in W, Z to be the pointwise stabilizer, and C=N/Z. Then restriction defines a homomorphism from the algebra of W-invariant polynomial functions on V to the algebra of C-invariant functions on X. In this note we consider the special case when W is a Coxeter group, V is the complexified reflection representation of W, and X is in the lattice of the arrangement of W, and give a simple, combinatorial characterization of when the restriction…
We study {\em disemisimple} Lie algebras, i.e., Lie algebras which can be written as a vector space sum of two semisimple subalgebras. We show that a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ is disemisimple if and only if its solvable radical coincides with its nilradical and is a prehomogeneous $\mathfrak{s}$-module for a Levi subalgebra $\mathfrak{s}$ of $\mathfrak{g}$. We use the classification of prehomogeneous $\mathfrak{s}$-modules for simple Lie algebras $\mathfrak{s}$ given by Vinberg to show that the solvable radical of a disemisimple Lie algebra with simple Levi subalgebra is abelian. We extend th…
We study the eigenspace decomposition of a basic classical Lie superalgebra under the adjoint action of a toral subalgebra, thus extending results of Kostant. In recognition of Kostant's contribution we refer to the eigenspaces appearing in the decomposition as Kostant roots. We then prove that Kostant root systems inherit the main properties of classical root systems. Our approach is combinatorial in nature and utilizes certain graphs naturally associated with Kostant root systems. In particular, we reprove Kostant's results without making use of the Killing form.
The author has previously shown that solvable Lie A-algebras and complemented solvable Lie algebras decompose as a vector space direct sum of abelian subalgebras, and their ideals relate nicely to this decomposition. However, neither of these classes is contained in the other. The object of this paper is to find a larger class of algebras, containing each of these classes, in which these same results hold.
Let $G$ be a semisimple Lie group and let $\g =\n_- +\hh +\n$ be a triangular decomposition of $\g= \hbox{Lie}\,G$. Let $\b =\hh +\n$ and let $H,N,B$ be Lie subgroups of $G$ corresponding respectively to $\hh,\n$ and $\b$. We may identify $\n_-$ with the dual space to $\n$. The coadjoint action of $N$ on $\n_-$ extends to an action of $B$ on $\n_-$. There exists a unique nonempty Zariski open orbit $X$ of $B$ on $\n_-$. Any $N$-orbit in $X$ is a maximal coadjoint orbit of $N$ in $\n_-$. The cascade of orthogonal roots defines a cross-section $\r_-^{\times}$ of the set of such orbits leading to…
We give a block decomposition of the equivariant derived category arising from a cyclically graded Lie algebra. This generalizes certain aspects of the generalized Springer correspondence to the graded setting.
We give uniform formulas for the branching rules of level 1 modules over orthogonal affine Lie algebras for all conformal pairs associated to symmetric spaces. We also provide a combinatorial intepretation of these formulas in terms of certain abelian subalgebras of simple Lie algebras.
We exhibit explicit orthogonal decompositions of every multidimensional restricted root space of a real semi-simple Lie algebra. We then show a link between this result and a radiality property of smooth functions on G-homogeneous spaces when G is a real semi-simple Lie group.
We completely describe the decompositions (into indecomposable submodules) of the tensor products of irreducible sl(2)-modules in characteristic 3. The answer resembles analogous decompositions for the Lie superalgebra sl(1|1).
Inspired by recent activities on Whittaker modules over various (Lie) algebras we describe some general framework for the study of Lie algebra modules locally finite over a subalgebra. As a special case we obtain a very general setup for the study of Whittaker modules, which includes, in particular, Lie algebras with triangular decomposition and simple Lie algebras of Cartan type. We describe some basic properties of Whittaker modules, including a block decomposition of the category of Whittaker modules and certain properties of simple Whittaker modules under some rather mild assumptions. We e…
The Bonnafé-Rouquier equivalence can be seen as a modular analogue of Lusztig's Jordan decomposition for groups of Lie type. In this paper, we show that this equivalence can be lifted to include automorphisms of the finite group of Lie type. Moreover, we prove the existence of a local version of this equivalence which satisfies similar properties.
Using $n$ finite order automorphisms on a simple complex Lie algebra we construct twisted $n$-toroidal Lie algebras. Thus obtaining Lie algebras wich have a rootspace decomposition. For the case $n=2$ we list certain simple Lie algebras and their automorphisms, which produce twisted 2-toroidal algebras. In this way we obtain Lie algebras that are related to all Extended Affine Root Systems of K. Saito.
Let L be a Lie pseudoalgebra, a in L. We show that, if a generates a (finite) solvable subalgebra S=<a>, then one may find a lifting a' in S of [a] in S/S' such that <a'> is nilpotent. We then apply this result towards vertex algebras: we show that every finite vertex algebra V admits a decomposition into a semi-direct product V = U + N, where U is a subalgebra of V whose underlying Lie conformal algebra U^lie is a nilpotent self-normalizing subalgebra of V^lie, and N is a canonically determined ideal contained in the nilradical Nil V.
We construct generators of the center of the universal enveloping algebra of the complex orthogonal Lie algebra realized as the alternative matrices of size $n$. These elements are constructed in accordance with the Iwasawa decomposition of the real rank one indefinite orthogonal Lie algebra. We also discuss the Iwasawa decomposition of the Pfaffian.
An extended version of Riedtmann's Lie algebra of the gentle one-cycle algebra $Λ(n-1,1,1)$ is computed and is shown to admit a Cartan decomposition by the positive roots of the root system of type $\mathbf{BC}_n$.
We study a family of Siegel modular forms that are constructed using Jacobi forms that arise in Umbral moonshine. All but one of them arise as the Weyl-Kac-Borcherds denominator formula of some Borcherds-Kac-Moody (BKM) Lie superalgebras. These Lie superalgebras have a $\widehat{sl(2)}$ subalgebra which we use to study the Siegel modular forms. We show that the expansion of the Umbral Jacobi forms in terms of $\widehat{sl(2)}$ characters leads to vector-valued modular forms. We obtain closed formulae for these vector-valued modular forms. In the Lie algebraic context, the Fourier coefficients …
The square-root of Siegel modular forms of CHL Z_N orbifolds of type II compactifications are denominator formulae for some Borcherds-Kac-Moody Lie superalgebras for N=1,2,3,4. We study the decomposition of these Siegel modular forms in terms of characters of two sub-algebras: one is a $\widehat{sl(2)}$ and the second is a Borcherds extension of the $\widehat{sl(2)}$. This is a continuation of our previous work where we studied the case of Siegel modular forms appearing in the context of Umbral moonshine. This situation is more intricate and provides us with a new example (for N=5) that did no…
The decomposition of the tensor product of a positive and a negative discrete series representation of the Lie algebra su(1,1) is a direct integral over the principal unitary series representations. In the decomposition discrete terms can occur, and the discrete terms are a finite number of discrete series representations or one complementary series representation. The interpretation of Meixner functions and polynomials as overlap coefficients in the four classes of representations and the Clebsch-Gordan decomposition, lead to a general bilinear generating function for the Meixner polynomials.…
We first present a filtration on the ring L of Laurent polynomials such that the direct sum decomposition of its associated graded ring gr L agrees with the direct sum decomposition of gr L, as a module over the complex general linear Lie algebra gl(n), into its simple submodules. Next, generalizing the simple modules occurring in gr L, we give some explicit constructions of weight multiplicity-free irreducible representations of gl(n).
The purpose of this article is to set foundations for decomposition numbers of perverse sheaves, to give some methods to calculate them in simple cases, and to compute them concretely in two situations: for a simple (Kleinian) surface singularity, and for the closure of the minimal non-trivial orbit in a simple Lie algebra. This work has applications to modular representation theory, for Weyl groups using the nilpotent cone of the corresponding semisimple Lie algebra, and for reductive algebraic group schemes using the affine Grassmannian of the Langlands dual group.
We study the coadjoint representation of contractions of reductive Lie algebras associated with symmetric decompositions. Let $\frak g=\frak g_0\oplus \frak g_1$ be a symmetric decomposition of a reductive Lie algebra $\frak g$. Then the semi-direct product of $\frak g_0$ and the $\frak g_0$-module $\frak g_1$ is a contraction of $\frak g$. We conjecture that these contractions have many properties in common with reductive Lie algebras. In particular, it is proved that in many cases the algebra of invariants is polynomial. We also discuss the so-called "codim--2 property" for coadjoint represe…
In this paper, we present an approach to the definition of multiparameter quantum groups by studying Hopf algebras with triangular decomposition. Classifying all of these Hopf algebras which are of what we call weakly separable type over a group, we obtain a class of pointed Hopf algebras which can be viewed as natural generalizations of multiparameter deformations of universal enveloping algebras of Lie algebras. These Hopf algebras are instances of a new version of braided Drinfeld doubles, which we call asymmetric braided Drinfeld doubles. This is a generalization of an earlier result by Be…
We study the Howe dualities involving the reductive dual pairs $(O(d),spo(2m|2n))$ and $(Sp(d),osp(2m|2n))$ on the (super)symmetric tensor of $\C^d\otimes\C^{m|n}$. We obtain complete decompositions of this space with respect to their respective joint actions. We also use these dualities to derive a character formula for these irreducible representations of $spo(2m|2n)$ and $osp(2m|2n)$ that appear in these decompositions.
The plethysms of the Weyl characters associated to a classical Lie group by the symmetric functions stabilize in large rank. In the case of a power sum plethysm, we prove that the coefficients of the decomposition of this stabilized form on the basis of Weyl characters are branching coefficients which can be determined by a simple algorithm. This generalizes in particular some classical results by Littlewood on the power sum plethysms of Schur functions. We also establish explicit formulas for the outer multiplicities appearing in the decomposition of the tensor square of any irreducible finit…
We consider the natural Lie algebra structure on the (associative) group algebra of a finite group $G$, and show that the Lie subalgebras associated to natural involutive antiautomorphisms of this group algebra are reductive ones. We give a decomposition in simple factors of these Lie algebras, in terms of the ordinary representations of $G$.
The weight systems of finite-dimensional representations of complex, simple Lie algebras exhibit patterns beyond Weyl-group symmetry. These patterns occur because weight systems can be decomposed into lattice polytopes in a natural way. Since lattice polytopes are relatively simple, this decomposition is useful, in addition to being more economical than the decomposition into single weights. An expansion of characters into polytope sums follows from the polytope decomposition of weight systems. We study this polytope expansion here. A new, general formula is given for the polytope sums involve…
There is a decomposition of a Lie algebra for open matrix chains akin to the triangular decomposition. We use this decomposition to construct unitary irreducible representations. All multiple meson states can be retrieved this way. Moreover, they are the only states with a finite number of non-zero quantum numbers with respect to a certain set of maximally commuting linearly independent quantum observables. Any other state is a tensor product of a multiple meson state and a state coming from a representation of a quotient algebra that extends and generalizes the Virasoro algebra. We expect the…
We determine the Jordan-Holder decomposition multiplicities of projective and cell modules over periplectic Brauer algebras in characteristic zero. These are obtained by developing the combinatorics of certain skew Young diagrams. We also establish a useful relationship with the Kazhdan-Lusztig multiplicities of the periplectic Lie superalgebra.
Let ${\goth g}$ be a semi-simple complex Lie algebra, ${\goth g}={\goth n^-}\oplus{\goth h}\oplus{\goth n}$ its triangular decomposition. Let $U({\goth g})$, resp. $U_q({\goth g})$, be its enveloping algebra, resp. its quantized enveloping algebra. This article gives a quantum approach to the combinatorics of (classical) harmonic elements and Kostant's generalized exponents for ${\goth \g}$. On the one hand, we give specialization results concerning harmonic elements, central elements of $U_q({\goth g})$, and the Joseph and Letzter's decomposition. For ${\goth g}={\goth sl}_{n+1}$, we describe…
We show that a certain symmetry exists in the stable irreducible decomposition of the Lie algebra consisting of symplectic derivations of the free Lie algebra generated by the first homology group of compact oriented surfaces.
We show that a tensor product of irreducible, finite dimensional representations of a simple Lie algebra over a field of characteristic zero, determines the individual constituents uniquely. This is analogous to the uniqueness of prime factorisation of natural numbers.
We consider the problem of decomposing tensor powers of the fundamental level 1 highest weight representation $V$ of the affine Kac-Moody algebra $\g(E_9)$. We describe an elementary algorithm for determining the decomposition of the submodule of $\Vn$ whose irreducible direct summands have highest weights which are maximal with respect to the null-root. This decomposition is based on Littelmann's path algorithm and conforms with the uniform combinatorial behavior recently discovered by H. Wenzl for the series $E_N$, $N\not=9$.
Consider the Plancherel decomposition of the tensor product of a highest weight and a lowest weight unitary representations of $SL_2$. We construct explicitly the action of the Lie algebra $sl_2 + sl_2$ in the direct integral of Hilbert spaces. It turns out that a Lie algebra operator is a second order differential operator in one variable and second order difference operator with respect to another variable. The difference operators are defined in terms of the shift in the imaginary direction $f(s)\mapsto f(s+i)$, $i^2=-1$ (the Plancherel measure is supported by real $s$).
In this paper a characterisation is given of solvable complemented Lie algebras. They decompose as a direct sum of abelian subalgebras and their ideals relate nicely to this decomposition. The class of such algebras is shown to be a formation whose residual is the ideal closure of the prefrattini subalgebras.
We consider the Plancherel measure on irreducible components of tensor powers of the spinor representation of so(2n+1). The irreducible representations correspond to the generalized Young diagrams. With respect to this measure the probability of an irreducible representation is the product of its multiplicity and dimension, divided by the total dimension of the tensor product. We study the limit shape of the generalized Young diagram when the tensor power N and the rank n of the algebra tend to infinity with N/n fixed. We derive an explicit formula for the limit shape and prove convergence to …
