Suppose that W is a finite, unitary, reflection group acting on the complex vector space V and X is a subspace of V. Define N to be the setwise stabilizer of X in W, Z to be the pointwise stabilizer, and C=N/Z. Then restriction defines a homomorphism from the algebra of W-invariant polynomial functions on V to the algebra of C-invariant functions on X. In this note we consider the special case when W is a Coxeter group, V is the complexified reflection representation of W, and X is in the lattice of the arrangement of W, and give a simple, combinatorial characterization of when the restriction mapping is surjective in terms of the exponents of W and C. As an application of our result, in the case when W is the Weyl group of a semisimple, complex, Lie algebra, we complete a calculation begun by Richardson in 1987 and obtain a simple combinatorial characterization of regular decomposition classes whose closure is a normal variety.
We study the geometry of the stratification induced by an affine hyperplane arrangement H on the quotient of a complex affine space by the action of a discrete group preserving H. We give conditions ensuring normality or normality in codimension 1 of strata. As an application, we provide the list of those categorical quotients of closures of Jordan classes and of sheets in all complex simple algebraic groups that are normal. In the simply connected case, we show that normality of such a quotient is equivalent to its smoothness.
We give a non-negative combinatorial formula, in terms of Littlewood-Richardson numbers, for the homology of the unitary representations of the cyclotomic rational Cherednik algebra, and as a consequence, for the graded Betti numbers for the ideals of a class of subspace arrangements arising from the reflection arrangements of complex reflection groups.
Ehrenborg and Jung recently related the order complex for the lattice of d-divisible partitions with the simplicial complex of pointed ordered set partitions via a homotopy equivalence. The latter has top homology naturally identified as a Specht module. Their work unifies that of Calderbank, Hanlon, Robinson, and Wachs. By focusing on the underlying geometry, we strengthen and extend these results from type A to all real reflection groups and the complex reflection groups known as Shephard groups.
We investigate the cohomology of the Milnor fibre of a reflection arrangement as a module for the group $Γ$ generated by the reflections, together with the cyclic monodromy. Although we succeed completely only for unitary reflection groups of rank two, we establish some general results which relate the isotypic componenents of the monodromy on the cohomology, to the Hodge structure and to the cohomology degree. Using eigenspace theory for reflection groups, we prove some sum formulae for additive functions such as the equivariant weight polynomial and certain polynomials related to the Euler c…
To a complex reflection arrangement with an invariant multiplicity function one can relate the space of logarithmic vector fields and the space of quasi-invariants, which are both modules over invariant polynomials. We establish a close relation between these modules. Berest-Chalykh freeness results for the module of quasi-invariants lead to new free complex reflection multiarrangements. K. Saito's primitive derivative gives a linear map between certain spaces of quasi-invariants. We also establish a close relation between non-homogeneous quasi-invariants for root systems and logarithmic vecto…
We show that for the family of complex reflection groups $G=G(m,p,2)$ appearing in the Shephard--Todd classification, the endomorphism ring of the reduced hyperplane arrangement $A(G)$ is a non-commutative resolution for the coordinate ring of the discriminant $Δ$ of $G$. This furthers the work of Buchweitz, Faber and Ingalls who showed that this result holds for any true reflection group. In particular, we construct a matrix factorization for $Δ$ from $A(G)$ and decompose it using data from the irreducible representations of $G$. For $G(m,p,2)$ we give a full decomposition of this matrix fact…
We study the hyperplane arrangements associated, via the minimal model programme, to symplectic quotient singularities. We show that this hyperplane arrangement equals the arrangement of CM-hyperplanes coming from the representation theory of restricted rational Cherednik algebras. We explain some of the interesting consequences of this identification for the representation theory of restricted rational Cherednik algebras. We also show that the Calogero-Moser space is smooth if and only if the Calogero-Moser families are trivial. We describe the arrangements of CM-hyperplanes associated to sev…
We refine Brieskorn's study of the cohomology of the complement of the reflection arrangement of a finite Coxeter group $W$. As a result we complete the verification of a conjecture by Felder and Veselov that gives an explicit basis of the space of $W$-invariants in this cohomology ring.
We construct a noncommutative desingularization of the discriminant of a finite reflection group $G$ as a quotient of the skew group ring $A=S*G$. If $G$ is generated by order two reflections, then this quotient identifies with the endomorphism ring of the reflection arrangement $\mathcal{A}(G)$ viewed as a module over the coordinate ring $S^G/(Δ)$ of the discriminant of $G$. This yields, in particular, a correspondence between the nontrivial irreducible representations of $G$ to certain maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules over the coordinate ring $S^G/(Δ)$. These maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules a…
Let $W$ be a finite irreducible real reflection group, which is a Coxeter group. We explicitly construct a basis for the module of differential 1-forms with logarithmic poles along the Coxeter arrangement by using a primitive derivation. As a consequence, we extend the Hodge filtration, indexed by nonnegative integers, into a filtration indexed by all integers. This filtration coincides with the filtration by the order of poles. The results are translated into the derivation case.
After having established elementary results on the relationship between a finite complex (pseudo-)reflection group W < GL(V) and its reflection arrangement A, we prove that the action of W on A is canonically related with other natural representations of W, through a `periodic' family of representations of its braid group. We also prove that, when W is irreducible, then the squares of defining linear forms for A span the quadratic forms on V, which imply |A| >= n(n+1)/2 for n = dim V, and relate the W-equivariance of the corresponding map with the period of our family.
In his seminal paper on complex reflection arrangements, Bessis introduces a Garside structure for the braid group of a well-generated irreducible complex reflection group. Using this Garside structure, he establishes a strong connection between regular elements in the reflection group, and roots of the "full twist" element of the pure braid group. He then suggests that it would be possible to extend the conclusion of this theorem to centralizers of regular elements in well-generated groups. In this paper we give a positive answer to this question and we show moreover that these results hold f…
Suppose that G is a finite, unitary reflection group acting on a complex vector space V and X is the fixed point subspace of an element of G. Define N to be the setwise stabilizer of X in G, Z to be the pointwise stabilizer, and C=N/Z. Then restriction defines a homomorphism from the algebra of G-invariant polynomial functions on V to the algebra of C-invariant functions on X. Extending earlier work by Douglass and Roehrle for Coxeter groups, we characterize when the restriction mapping is surjective for arbitrary unitary reflection groups G in terms of the exponents of G and C, and their refl…
The purpose of this article is to study the relationship between numerical invariants of certain subspace arrangements coming from reflection groups and numerical invariants arising in the representation theory of Cherednik algebras. For instance, we observe that knowledge of the equivariant graded Betti numbers (in the sense of commutative algebra) of any irreducible representation in category O is equivalent to knowledge of the Kazhdan-Lusztig character of the irreducible object (we use this observation in joint work with Fishel-Manosalva). We then explore the extent to which Cherednik algeb…
The Eulerian idempotents, first introduced for the symmetric group and later extended to all reflection groups, generate a family of representations called the Eulerian representations that decompose the regular representation. In Type $A$, the Eulerian representations have many elegant but mysterious connections to rings naturally associated with the braid arrangement. In this paper, we unify these results and show that they hold for any reflection group of coincidental type -- that is, $S_{n}$, $B_{n}$, $H_{3}$ or the dihedral group $I_{2}(m)$ -- by giving six characterizations of the Euleri…
We study the quiver of the descent algebra of a finite Coxeter group W. The results include a derivation of the quiver of the descent algebra of types A and B. Our approach is to study the descent algebra as an algebra constructed from the reflection arrangement associated to W.
(Abridged abstract) For a finite real reflection group W and a W-orbit O of flats in its reflection arrangement---or equivalently a conjugacy class of its parabolic subgroups---we introduce a statistic on elements of W. We then study the operator of right-multiplication within the group algebra of W by the element whose coefficients are given by this statistic. We reinterpret the operators geometrically in terms of the arrangement of reflecting hyperplanes for W. We show that they are self-adjoint and positive semidefinite. via two explicit factorizations into a symmetrized form A^t A. In one …
The Loewy length of the descent algebra of type D_{2m+1} is shown to be m+2, for m \geq 2, by providing an upper bound that agrees with the lower bound in \cite{BonnafePfeiffer2006}. The bound is obtained by showing that the length of the longest path in the quiver of the descent algebra of D_{2m+1} is at most m+1. To achieve this bound, the geometric approach to the descent algebra is used, in which the descent algebra of a finite Coxeter group is identified with an algebra associated to the reflection arrangement of the group.
Let $\mathcal{L}$ be the noncrossing partition lattice associated to a finite Coxeter group $W$. In this paper we construct explicit bases for the top homology groups of intervals and rank-selected subposets of $\mathcal{L}$. We define a multiplicative structure on the Whitney homology of $\mathcal{L}$ in terms of the basis, and the resulting algebra has similarities to the Orlik-Solomon algebra. As an application, we obtain four chain complexes which compute the integral homology of the Milnor fibre of the reflection arrangement of $W$, the Milnor fibre of the discriminant of $W$, the hyperpl…
