After having established elementary results on the relationship between a finite complex (pseudo-)reflection group W < GL(V) and its reflection arrangement A, we prove that the action of W on A is canonically related with other natural representations of W, through a `periodic' family of representations of its braid group. We also prove that, when W is irreducible, then the squares of defining linear forms for A span the quadratic forms on V, which imply |A| >= n(n+1)/2 for n = dim V, and relate the W-equivariance of the corresponding map with the period of our family.
We consider both standard and twisted action of a (real) Coxeter group G on the complement M_G to the complexified reflection hyperplanes by combining the reflections with complex conjugation. We introduce a natural geometric class of special involutions in G and give explicit formulae which describe both actions on the total cohomology H(M_G,C) in terms of these involutions. As a corollary we prove that the corresponding twisted representation is regular only for the symmetric group S_n, the Weyl groups of type D_{2m+1}, E_6 and dihedral groups I_2 (2k+1) and that the standard action has no a…
We investigate the cohomology of the Milnor fibre of a reflection arrangement as a module for the group $Γ$ generated by the reflections, together with the cyclic monodromy. Although we succeed completely only for unitary reflection groups of rank two, we establish some general results which relate the isotypic componenents of the monodromy on the cohomology, to the Hodge structure and to the cohomology degree. Using eigenspace theory for reflection groups, we prove some sum formulae for additive functions such as the equivariant weight polynomial and certain polynomials related to the Euler c…
Steinberg showed that when a finite reflection group acts on a real or complex vector space of finite dimension, the Jacobian determinant of a set of basic invariants factors into linear forms which define the reflecting hyperplanes. This result generalizes verbatim to fields whose characteristic is prime to the order of the group. Our main theorem gives a generalization of Steinberg's result for arbitrary fields using a ramification formula of Benson and Crawley-Boevey. As an intermediate result, we show that every finite group which fixes a hyperplane pointwise has a polynomial ring of invar…
Popov classified crystallographic complex reflection groups by determining lattices they stabilize. These analogs of affine Weyl groups have infinite order and are generated by reflections about affine hyperplanes; most arise as the semi-direct product of a finite complex reflection group and a full rank lattice. Steinberg's fixed point theorem asserts that the regular orbits under the action of a reflection group are exactly the orbits lying off of reflecting hyperplanes. This theorem holds for finite reflection groups (real or complex) and also affine Weyl groups but fails for some crystallo…
For well-generated complex reflection groups, Chapuy and Stump gave a simple product for a generating function counting reflection factorizations of a Coxeter element by their length. This is refined here to record the number of reflections used from each orbit of hyperplanes. The proof is case-by-case via the classification of well-generated groups. It implies a new expression for the Coxeter number, expressed via data coming from a hyperplane orbit; a case-free proof of this due to J. Michel is included.
We show that the projectivized complex reflection group $Γ$ of the unique $(1+i)$-modular Hermitian $\mathbb{Z}[i]$-module of signature $(9,1)$ is a new arithmetic reflection group in $PU(9,1)$. We find $32$ complex reflections of order four generating $Γ$. The mirrors of these $32$ reflections form the vertices of a sort of Coxeter-Dynkin diagram $D$ for $Γ$ that encode Coxeter-type generators and relations for $Γ$. The vertices of $D$ can be indexed by sixteen points and sixteen affine hyperplanes in $\mathbb{F}_2^4$. The edges of $D$ are determined by the finite geometry of these points and…
We study the hyperplane arrangements associated, via the minimal model programme, to symplectic quotient singularities. We show that this hyperplane arrangement equals the arrangement of CM-hyperplanes coming from the representation theory of restricted rational Cherednik algebras. We explain some of the interesting consequences of this identification for the representation theory of restricted rational Cherednik algebras. We also show that the Calogero-Moser space is smooth if and only if the Calogero-Moser families are trivial. We describe the arrangements of CM-hyperplanes associated to sev…
The eigenspace theory of unitary reflection groups, initiated by Springer and Lehrer, suggests that the following object is worthy of study: the poset of eigenspaces of elements of a unitary reflection group, for a fixed eigenvalue, ordered by the reverse of inclusion. We investigate topological properties of this poset. The new results extend the well-known work of Orlik and Solomon on the lattice of intersections of hyperplanes.
We show that for the family of complex reflection groups $G=G(m,p,2)$ appearing in the Shephard--Todd classification, the endomorphism ring of the reduced hyperplane arrangement $A(G)$ is a non-commutative resolution for the coordinate ring of the discriminant $Δ$ of $G$. This furthers the work of Buchweitz, Faber and Ingalls who showed that this result holds for any true reflection group. In particular, we construct a matrix factorization for $Δ$ from $A(G)$ and decompose it using data from the irreducible representations of $G$. For $G(m,p,2)$ we give a full decomposition of this matrix fact…
This paper continues the study of the poset of eigenspaces of elements of a unitary reflection group (for a fixed eigenvalue), which was commenced in [6] and [5]. The emphasis in this paper is on the representation theory of unitary reflection groups. The main tool is the theory of poset extensions due to Segev and Webb ([16]). The new results place the well-known representations of unitary reflection groups on the top homology of the lattice of intersections of hyperplanes into a natural family, parameterised by eigenvalue.
Following the definition of Rouquier for the "families of characters" of a Weyl group and its generalization to the case of complex reflection groups, already appeared in the works of Broue-Kim and Malle-Rouquier, we show that these "families" depend on a numerical datum of the group, its "essential hyperplanes". Using this characterization, we provide the algorithm and the results of the determination of the Rouquier blocks of the cyclotomic Hecke algebras of all exceptional complex reflection groups.
Let W be a finite group generated by unitary reflections and A be the set of reflecting hyperplanes. We will give a characterization of the logarithmic differential forms with poles along A in terms of anti-invariant differential forms. If W is a Coxeter group defined over the real numbers, then the characterization provides a new method to find a basis for the module of logarithmic differential forms out of basic invariants.
The notion of limit roots of a Coxeter group W was recently introduced (see arXiv:1112.5415 and arXiv:1303.6710): they are the accumulation points of directions of roots of a root system for W. In the case where the root system lives in a Lorentzian space W admits a faithful representation as a discrete reflection group of isometries on a hyperbolic space; the accumulation set of any of its orbits is then classically called the limit set of W. In this article we show that the limit roots of a Coxeter group W acting on a Lorentzian space is equal to the limit set of W seen as a discrete reflect…
Several finite complex reflection groups have a braid group which is isomorphic to a torus knot group. The reflection group is obtained from the torus knot group by declaring meridians to have order $k$ for some $k\geq 2$, and meridians are mapped to reflections. We study all possible quotients of torus knot groups obtained by requiring meridians to have finite order. Using the theory of $J$-groups of Achar and Aubert, we show that these groups behave like (in general infinite) complex reflection groups of rank two. The large family of "toric reflection groups" which we obtain includes, among …
In this paper, we determine the modular invariants of finite modular pseudo-reflection subgroups of the finite general linear group $ \text{GL}_n(q) $ acting on the tensor product of the symmetric algebra $ S^{\bullet}(V) $ and the exterior algebra $ \wedge^{\bullet}(V) $ of the natural $ \text{GL}_n(q) $-module $ V $. We are particularly interested in the case where $ G $ is a subgroup of the parabolic subgroups of $ \text{GL}_n(q) $ which is a generalization of Weyl group of Cartan type Lie algebra.
Let W be a complex reflection group, acting on a complex vector space H. Kato has recently introduced the notion of a "Kostka system," which is a certain collection of finite-dimensional W-equivariant modules for the symmetric algebra on H. In this paper, we show that Kostka systems can be used to construct "exotic" t-structures on the derived category of finite-dimensional modules, and we prove a derived-equivalence result for these t-structures.
This paper defines the partition algebra for complex reflection group $G(r,p,n)$ acting on $k$-fold tensor product $(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes k}$, where $\mathbb{C}^n$ is the reflection representation of $G(r,p,n)$. A basis of the centralizer algebra of this action of $G(r,p,n)$ was given by Tanabe and for $p =1$, the corresponding partition algebra was studied by Orellana. We also establish a subalgebra as partition algebra of a subgroup of $G(r,p,n)$ acting on $(\mathbb{C}^n)^{\otimes k}$. We call these algebras as Tanabe algebras. The aim of this paper is to study representation theory of Tan…
In this paper we construct finite dimensional representations of the wreath product symplectic reflection algebra H(k,c,N,G) of rank N attached to a finite subgroup G of SL(2,C) (here k is a number and c a class function on the set of nontrivial elements of G). Specifically, we show that if W is an irreducible representation of S_N whose Young diagram is a rectangle, and Y an irreduible finite dimensional representation of H(c,1,G), then the representation M=W\otimes Y^N of H(0,c_0,N,G) can be deformed along a hyperplane in the space of parameters (k,c) passing through c_0. On the other hand, …
Lewis, Reiner, and Stanton conjectured a Hilbert seriesfor a space of invariants under an action of finite general linear groups using $(q,t)$-binomial coefficients. This work gives an analog in positive characteristic of theorems relating various Catalan numbers to the representation theory of rational Cherednik algebras. They consider a finite general linear group as a reflection group acting on the quotient of a polynomial ring by iterated powers of the irrelevant ideal under the Frobenius map. We prove a variant of their conjecture in the local case, when the group acting fixes a reflectin…
To every irreducible finite crystallographic reflection group (i.e., an irreducible finite reflection group G acting faithfully on an abelian variety X), we attach a family of classical and quantum integrable systems on X (with meromorphic coefficients). These families are parametrized by G-invariant functions of pairs (T,s), where T is a hypertorus in X (of codimension 1), and s in G is a reflection acting trivially on T. If G is a real reflection group, these families reduce to the known generalizations of elliptic Calogero-Moser systems, but in the non-real case they appear to be new. We gi…
Let G be a finite group of complex n by n unitary matrices generated by reflections acting on C^n. Let R be the ring of invariant polynomials, and χbe a multiplicative character of G. Let Ω^χbe the R-module of χ-invariant differential forms. We define a multiplication in Ω^χand show that under this multiplication Ω^χhas an exterior algebra structure. We also show how to extend the results to vector fields, and exhibit a relationship between χ-invariant forms and logarithmic forms.
Suppose that G is a finite, unitary reflection group acting on a complex vector space V and X is the fixed point subspace of an element of G. Define N to be the setwise stabilizer of X in G, Z to be the pointwise stabilizer, and C=N/Z. Then restriction defines a homomorphism from the algebra of G-invariant polynomial functions on V to the algebra of C-invariant functions on X. Extending earlier work by Douglass and Roehrle for Coxeter groups, we characterize when the restriction mapping is surjective for arbitrary unitary reflection groups G in terms of the exponents of G and C, and their refl…
Let G be a finite subgroup of SL(2,C). Let S_N#G^N be the wreath product of G by the symmetric group of degree N, acting symplectically on a complex vector space V of dimension 2N, with symplectic basis {x_i, y_i} i=1,...,N. In this paper we classify all the irreducible representations of S_N#G^N that can be extended to a representation of the associated symplectic reflection algebra H(k,c,N,G) (where k is a complex number and c a class function on the non-trivial elements of G) for non-zero values of k and with trivial action of the generators x_i,y_i\in H(k,c,N,G).
Suppose that W is a finite, unitary, reflection group acting on the complex vector space V and X is a subspace of V. Define N to be the setwise stabilizer of X in W, Z to be the pointwise stabilizer, and C=N/Z. Then restriction defines a homomorphism from the algebra of W-invariant polynomial functions on V to the algebra of C-invariant functions on X. In this note we consider the special case when W is a Coxeter group, V is the complexified reflection representation of W, and X is in the lattice of the arrangement of W, and give a simple, combinatorial characterization of when the restriction…
Shephard groups are unitary reflection groups arising as the symmetries of regular complex polytopes. For a Shephard group, we identify the representation carried by the principal ideal in the coinvariant algebra generated by the image of the product of all linear forms defining reflecting hyperplanes. This representation turns out to have many equivalent guises making it analogous to the sign representation of a finite Coxeter group. One of these guises is (up to a twist) the cohomology of the Milnor fiber for the isolated singularity at 0 in the hypersurface defined by any homogeneous invari…
We give a combinatorial description (including explicit differential-form bases) for the cohomology groups of the space of n distinct nonzero complex numbers, with coefficients in rank-one local systems which are of finite monodromy around the coordinate hyperplanes and trivial monodromy around all other hyperplanes. In the case where the local system is equivariant for the symmetric group, we write the cohomology groups as direct sums of inductions of one-dimensional characters of subgroups. This relies on an equivariant description of the Orlik-Solomon algebras of full monomial reflection gr…
We consider finite groups acting on quantum (or skew) polynomial rings. Deformations of the semidirect product of the quantum polynomial ring with the acting group extend symplectic reflection algebras and graded Hecke algebras to the quantum setting over a field of arbitrary characteristic. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for such algebras to satisfy a Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt property using the theory of noncommutative Groebner bases. We include applications to the case of abelian groups and the case of groups acting on coordinate rings of quantum planes. In addition, we classify g…
