We describe and construct here pseudo-Hermitian structures $θ$ without torsion (i.e. with transversal symmetry) whose Webster-Ricci curvature tensor is a constant multiple of the exterior differential $dθ$. We call these structures pseudo-Hermitian Einstein and our result states that they all can be derived locally from K{ä}hler-Einstein metrics. Moreover, we discuss the corresponding Fefferman metrics of the pseudo-Hermitian Einstein structures. These Fefferman metrics are never Einstein, but they are locally always conformally Einstein.
In this paper, we derive the second variation formula of pseudoharmonic maps into any pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. When the target manifold is an isometric embedded CR manifold in complex Euclidean space or a pseudo-Hermitian immersed submanifold in Heisenberg group, we give some conditions on Weingarten maps to obtain some unstability of pseudoharmonic maps between these pseudo-Hermitian manifolds.
In this paper, we show that, for every Hermitian vector bundle over a compact Kaehler Einstein manifold, if the projection is biharmonic, then it is harmonic.
In this paper, we give an estimate of sub-Laplacian of Riemannian distance functions in pseudo-Hermitian geometry which plays a similar role as Laplacian comparison theorem in Riemannian geometry, and deduce a prior horizontal gradient estimate of pseudo-harmonic maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to regular balls of Riemannian manifolds. As an application, Liouville theorem is established under the conditions of nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature and vanishing pseudo-Hermitian torsion. Moreover, we obtain the existence of pseudo-harmonic maps from complete noncompact pseudo-Hermit…
In this paper, we will give a horizontal gradient estimate of positive solutions of $Δ_b u = - λu$ on complete noncompact pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. As a consequence, we recapture the Liouville theorem of positive pseudo-harmonic functions on Sasakian manifolds with nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature.
In this paper, using Donaldson's heat flow, we show that the semi-stability of a Higgs bundle over a compact Kähler manifold implies the existence of approximate Hermitian-Einstein structure on the Higgs bundle.
The covariant derivative of the Kähler form of an almost pseudo-Hermitian or of an almost para-Hermitian manifold satisfies certain algebraic relations. We show, conversely, that any 3-tensor which satisfies these algebraic relations can be realized geometrically.
In this article we focus on multiplier Hermitian-Einstein metrics introduced by Mabuchi which include Kähler-Einstein metrics, Kähler-Ricci solitons and Mabuchi solitons as special cases. We also focus on KSM-manifolds, which are introduced by the first author as toric bundles, to establish a criterion for the existence of multiplier Hermitian-Einstein metrics in terms of KSM-data. An explicit example for a KSM-manifold admitting a family of multiplier Hermitian-Einstein metrics is constructed by using a continuous path connecting a Kähler-Ricci soliton and a Mabuchi soliton.
We prove that a simpy connected Hermitian Einstein 4-manifold with non-negative sectional curvature is isometric to complex projective space $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^{2}$ with the Fubini-Study metric or isometric to the product $\mathbb{S}^{2}\times \mathbb{S}^{2}$ with the canonical metric.
The orthogonal decomposition of the Webster curvature provides us a way to characterize some canonical metrics on a pseudo-Hermitian manifold. We derive some subelliptic differential inequalities from the Weitzenböck formulas for the traceless pseudo-Hermitian Ricci tensor and the Chern-Moser tensor of Sasakian manifolds with constant pseudo-Hermitian scalar curvature and Sasakian pseudo-Einstein manifolds respectively. By means of either subelliptic estimates or maximum principle, some rigidity theorems are established to characterize Sasakian pseudo-Einstein manifolds among Sasakian manifold…
Let (M,h) be a compact 4-dimensional Einstein manifold, and suppose that h is Hermitian with respect to some complex structure J on M. Then either (M,J,h) is Kaehler-Einstein, or else, up to rescaling and isometry, it is one of the following two exceptions: the Page metric on CP2 # (-CP2), or the Einstein metric on CP2 # 2 (-CP2) constructed in Chen-LeBrun-Weber.
In this paper we will prove that the only compact 4-manifold M with an Einstein metric of positive sectional curvature which is also hermitian with respect to some complex structure on M, is the complex projective plane CP^2, with its Fubini-Study metric.
We define pseudo-Hermitian magnetic curves in Sasakian manifolds endowed with the Tanaka-Webster connection. After we give a complete classification theorem, we construct parametrizations of pseudo-Hermitian magnetic curves in $\mathbb{R}^{2n+1}(-3)$.
We provide a local classification of self-dual Einstein Riemannian four manifolds admitting a positively oriented Hermitian structure and characterize those which carry a hyperhermitian, non-hyperkählerian structure compatible with the negative orientation. We finally show that self-dual Einstein 4-manifolds obtained as quaternionic quotients of the Wolf spaces ${\mathbb H}P^2$, ${\mathbb H}H^2$, $SU(4)/S(U(2)U(2))$, and $SU(2,2)/S(U(2)U(2))$ are always Hermitian.
Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold, $E\to X$ a Hermitian vector bundle and $L\to X$ an ample line bundle. We construct a non-linear heat flow corresponding to the almost Hermitian-Einstein equation introduced by N.C. Leung, and prove that the solution exists for a short time. We also construct a potential function $D_k$ for this flow. In particular, $D_k$ decreases along the flow.
We introduce some generalizations of the Hermitian-Einstein equation for diagonal harmonic metrics on cyclic Higgs bundles, including a generalization using subharmonic functions. When the coefficients are all smooth, we prove the existence, uniqueness, and convergence of the solution of their heat equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We also generalize two inequality estimates for solutions of the Hermitian-Einstein equation for cyclic Higgs bundles.
A differential operator introduced by A. Gray on the unit sphere bundle of a Kähler-Einstein manifold is studied. A lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian for the Sasaki metric on the unit sphere bundle of a Kähler-Einstein manifold is derived. Some rigidity theorems classifying complex space forms amongst compact Hermitian surfaces and the product of two projective lines amongst all Kähler-Einstein surfaces are then derived.
In this paper, we discuss the heat flow of a pseudo-harmonic map from a closed pseudo-Hermitian manifold to a Riemannian manifold with non-positive sectional curvature, and prove the existence of the pseudo-harmonic map which is a generalization of Eells-Sampson's existence theorem. We also discuss the uniqueness of the pseudo-harmonic representative of its homotopy class which is a generalization of Hartman theorem, provided that the target manifold has negative sectional curvature.
We study 4-dimensional second-Chern-Einstein almost-Hermitian manifolds. In the compact case, we observe that under a certain hypothesis the Riemannian dual of the Lee form is a Killing vector field. We use that observation to describe 4-dimensional compact second-Chern-Einstein locally conformally symplectic manifolds and we give some examples of such manifolds. Finally, we study the second-Chern-Einstein problem on unimodular almost-abelian Lie algebras, classifying those that admit a left-invariant second-Chern-Einstein metric with a parallel non-zero Lee form.
The present article studies the class of Einstein-Hermitian harmonic maps of constant Kaehler angle from the projective line into quadrics. We provide a description of their moduli spaces up to image, and gauge-equivalence using the language of vector bundles and representation theory. It is shown that the dimension of the moduli spaces is independent of the Einstein-Hermitian constant, and rigidity of the associated real standard, and totally real maps is examined. Finally, certain classical results concerning embeddings of two-dimensional spheres into spheres are rephrased and derived in our…
In this paper, we establish a generalized maximum principle for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. As corollaries, Omori-Yau type maximum principles for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds are deduced. Moreover, we prove that the stochastic completeness for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian is equivalent to the validity of a weak form of the generalized maximum principles. Finally, we give some applications of these generalized maximum principles.
In this paper, we investigate the problem of prescribing Webster scalar curvatures on compact pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. In terms of the method of upper and lower solutions and the perturbation theory of self-adjoint operators, we can describe some sets of Webster scalar curvature functions which can be realized through pointwise CR conformal deformations and CR conformally equivalent deformations respectively from a given pseudo-Hermitian structure.
We find geometric conditions on a Hermitian-Weyl manifold under which the complex structure is a pseudo-harmonic map in the sense of G. Kokarev \cite{K09} from the manifold into its twistor space. This is done under the assumption that the dimension of the manifold is four or the Hermitian-Weyl structure is locally conformally Kähler.
This paper produces explicit strongly Hermitian Einstein-Maxwell solutions on the smooth compact $4$-manifolds that are $S^2$-bundles over compact Riemann surfaces of any genus. This generalizes the existence results by C. LeBrun in arXiv:1411.3992 and arXiv:1504.06669. Moreover, by calculating the (normalized) Einstein-Hilbert functional of our examples we generalize Theorem E of arXiv:1504.06669, which speaks to the abundance of Hermitian Einstein-Maxwell solutions on such manifolds. As a bonus, we exhibit certain pairs of strongly Hermitian Einstein-Maxwell solutions, first found in arXiv:1…
Given a Kaehlerian holomorphic fiber bundle whose fiber is a compact homogeneous Kaehler manifold, we describe the perturbed Hermitian-Einstein equations relative to certain holomorphic vector bundles. With respect to special metrics on the holomorphic bundles, there is a dimensional reduction procedure which reduces these equations to a system of equations on the base, known as the twisted coupled vortex equations.
Based on uniform CR Sobolev inequality and Moser iteration, this paper investigates the convergence of closed pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. In terms of the subelliptic inequality, the set of closed normalized pseudo-Einstein manifolds with some uniform geometric conditions is compact. Moreover, the set of closed normalized Sasakian $η$-Einstein $(2n+1)$-manifolds with Carnot-Carathéodory distance bounded from above, volume bounded from below and $L^{n + \frac{1}{2}}$ norm of pseudo-Hermitian curvature bounded is $C^\infty$ compact. As an application, we will deduce some pointed convergence of co…
In this paper, a lot of examples of four-dimensional manifolds with an almost hypercomplex pseudo-Hermitian structure are constructed in several explicit ways. The received 4-manifolds are characterized by their linear invariants in the known aspects.
Let $M$ be a pseudo-Hermitian homogeneous space of finite volume. We show that $M$ is compact and the identity component $G$ of the group of holomorphic isometries of $M$ is compact. If $M$ is simply connected, then even the full group of holomorphic isometries is compact. These results stem from a careful analysis of the Tits fibration of $M$, which is shown to have a torus as its fiber. The proof builds on foundational results on the automorphisms groups of compact almost pseudo-Hermitian homogeneous spaces. It is known that a compact homogeneous pseudo-Kähler manifold splits as a product of…
Almost hypercomplex pseudo-Hermitian manifolds are considered. Isotropic hyper-Kähler manifolds are introduced. A 4-parametric family of 4-dimensional manifolds of this type is constructed on a Lie group. This family is characterized geometrically. The condition a 4-manifold to be isotropic hyper-Kähler is given.
We calculate the first and the second variation formula for the sub-Riemannian area in three dimensional pseudo-hermitian manifolds. We consider general variations that can move the singular set of a C^2 surface and non-singular variation for C_H^2 surfaces. These formulas enable us to construct a stability operator for non-singular C^2 surfaces and another one for C2 (eventually singular) surfaces. Then we can obtain a necessary condition for the stability of a non-singular surface in a pseudo-hermitian 3-manifold in term of the pseudo-hermitian torsion and the Webster scalar curvature. Final…
We define a functional for Hermitian metrics using the curvature of the Chern connection. The Euler-Lagrange equation for this functional is an elliptic equation for Hermitian metrics. Solutions to this equation are related to Kähler-Einstein metrics, and are automatically Kähler-Einstein under certain conditions. Given this, a natural parabolic flow equation arises. We prove short time existence and regularity results for this flow, as well as stability for the flow near Kähler-Einstein metrics with negative or zero first Chern class.
The tangent bundle as a $4n$-manifold is equipped with an almost hypercomplex pseudo-Hermitian structure and it is characterized with respect to the relevant classifications. A number of 8-dimensional examples of the considered type of manifold are received from the known explicit examples in that manner.
Any constant-scalar-curvature Kaehler (cscK) metric on a complex surface may be viewed as a solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, and this allows one to produce solutions of these equations on any 4-manifold that arises as a compact complex surface with b_1 even. It is shown, however, that not all solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations on such manifolds arise in this way; new examples can be constructed by means of conformally Kaehler geometry.
The class of the hypercomplex pseudo-Hermitian manifolds is considered. The flatness of the considered manifolds with the 3 parallel complex structures is proved. Conformal transformations of the metrics are introduced. The conformal invariance and the conformal equivalence of the basic types manifolds are studied. A known example is characterized in relation to the obtained results.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate canonical metrics on a semi-stable vector bundle E over a compact Kahler manifold X. It is shown that, if E is semi-stable, then Donaldson's functional is bounded from below. This implies that E admits an approximate Hermitian-Einstein structure, generalizing a classic result of Kobayashi for projective manifolds to the Kahler case. As an application some basic properties of semi-stable vector bundles over compact Kahler manifolds are established, such as the fact that semi-stability is preserved under tensor product and certain exterior and symmetri…
We prove some Liouville type results for generalized holomorphic maps in three classes: maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to almost Hermitian manifolds, maps from almost Hermitian manifolds to pseudo-Hermitian manifolds and maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to pseudo-Hermitian manifolds, assuming that the domains are compact. For instance, we show that any $(J,J^N)$ holomorphic map from a compact pseudo-Hermitian manifold $M$ with nonnegative (resp. positive) pseudo-Hermitian sectional curvature to an almost Hermitian manifold $N$ with negative (resp. nonpositive) holomorphic sectional c…
Mabuchi introduced multiplier Hermitian structures on compact Kahler manifolds and defined metrics similar to Kahler-Einstein metrics under these structures. In this note we generalize the inequality of Moser-Trudinger type on Kahler-Einstein manifolds to this case.
Let $X$ be a compact Gauduchon manifold, and let $E$ and $V_0$ be holomorphic vector bundles over $X$. Suppose that $E$ is stable when considering all subsheaves preserved by a Higgs field $θ\in H^0($End$(E)\otimes V_0)$. Then a modified version of the Donaldson heat flow converges along a subsequence of times to a solution of a generalized Hermitian-Einstein equation, given by $iΛF+[θ,θ^\dagger]=λI$.
In this paper, we consider some generalized holomorphic maps between pseudo-Hermitian manifolds and Hermitian manifolds. By Bochner formulas and comparison theorems, we establish related Schwarz type results. As corollaries, Liouville theorem and little Picard theorem for basic CR functions are deduced. Finally, we study CR Carathéodory pseudodistance on CR manifolds.
From a view point of the moment map, we shall introduce the notion of Einstein-Hermitian generalized connections over a generalized Kähler manifold of symplectic type. We show that moduli spaces of Einstein-Hermitian generalized connections arise as the Kähler quotients. The deformation complex of Einstein-Hermitian generalized connections is an elliptic complex and it turns out that the smooth part of the moduli space is a finite dimensional Kähler manifold. The canonical line bundle over a generalized Kähler manifold of symplectic type has the canonical generalized connection and its curvatu…
For a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact Kähler orbifold, the slope stability of the bundle is shown to be equivalent to the existence of a Hermitian-Einstein metric or to the properness of a certain functional introduced by Donaldson.
In this paper, we consider some generalized holomorphic maps between pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. These maps include the \emph{CR} maps and the transversally holomorphic maps. In terms of some sub-Laplacian or Hessian type Bochner formulas, and comparison theorems in the pseudo-Hermitian version, we are able to establish several Schwarz type results for both the \emph{CR} maps and the transversally holomorphic maps between pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. Finally, we also discuss the \emph{CR} hyperbolicity problem for pseudo-Hermitian manifolds.
The Horrocks-Mumford bundle $E$ is a famous stable complex vector bundle of rank 2 on 4-dimensional complex projective space. By construction, $E$ has a natural Hermitian metric $h_1$. On the other hand, stability implies the existence of a Hermitian-Einstein metric in $E$ which is unique up to a positive scalar. Now the obvious question is if $h_1$ is in fact the Hermitian-Einstein metric. In this note we indicate how to show by computation that this is not the case.
We study some basic properties and examples of Hermitian metrics on complex manifolds whose traces of the curvature of the Chern connection are proportional to the metric itself.
We study nilpotent Lie algebras endowed with a complex structure and a quadratic structure which is pseudo-Hermitian for the given complex structure. We propose several methods to construct such Lie algebras and describe a method of double extension by planes to get an inductive description of all of them. As an application, we give a complete classification of nilpotent quadratic Lie algebras where the metric is Lorentz-Hermitian and we fully classify all nilpotent pseudo-Hermitian quadratic Lie algebras up to dimension 8 and their inequivalent pseudo-Hermitian metrics.
In this paper, we study the theory of geodesics with respect to the Tanaka-Webster connection in a pseudo-Hermitian manifold, aiming to generalize some comparison results in Riemannian geometry to the case of pseudo-Hermitian geometry. Some Hopf-Rinow type, Cartan-Hadamard type and Bonnet-Myers type results are established.
Let E_G be a principal G-bundle over a compact connected Kähler manifold, where G is a connected reductive complex linear algebraic group. We show that E_G is semistable if and only if it admits approximate Hermitian-Einstein structures.
Given a smooth complex projective variety X and a smooth divisor D on X, we prove the existence of Hermitian-Einstein connections, with respect to a Poincaré-type metric on X - D, on polystable parabolic principal Higgs bundles with parabolic structure over D, satisfying certain conditions on its restriction to D.
Let X be a smooth complex projective curve and S a finite subset of X. We show that an orthogonal or symplectic parabolic Higgs bundle on X with parabolic structure over S admits a Hermitian-Einstein connection if and only if it is polystable.
We develop a theory of stable bundles and affine Hermitian-Einstein metrics for flat vector bundles over a special affine manifold (a manifold admitting an atlas whose gluing maps are all locally constant volume-preserving affine maps). Our paper presents a parallel to Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau's proof of the existence of Hermitian-Einstein metrics on Kähler manifolds, and the extension of this theorem by Li-Yau to the non-Kähler complex case of Gauduchon metrics. Our definition of stability involves only flat vector subbundles (and not singular subsheaves), and so is simpler than the complex ca…
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over $\mathbb C$. We prove that a twisted Higgs vector bundle $(\calE\, ,θ)$ on $X$ admits an Einstein--Hermitian connection if and only if $(\calE\, ,θ)$ is polystable. A similar result for twisted vector bundles (no Higgs fields) was proved by S. Wang in \cite{Wa}. Our approach is simpler.
We introduce a new system of equations coupling Kähler-Einstein and Hermitian-Yang-Mills equations. We provide a moment map interpretation of these equations. We identify a Futaki type invariant as an obstruction to the existence of solutions to these equations. We also prove a Matsushima-Lichnerowicz type theorem. We prove a deformation result that produces nontrivial solutions of these equations under some conditions. We produce examples on some projective bundles using Calabi ansatz.
Let $M$ be a compact connected special flat affine manifold without boundary equipped with a Gauduchon metric $g$ and a covariant constant volume form. Let $G$ be either a connected reductive complex linear algebraic group or the real locus of a split real form of a complex reductive group. We prove that a flat principal $G$-bundle $E_G$ over $M$ admits a Hermitian-Einstein structure if and only if $E_G$ is polystable. A polystable flat principal $G$--bundle over $M$ admits a unique Hermitian-Einstein connection. We also prove the existence and uniqueness of a Harder-Narasimhan filtration for …
We adapt the notions of stability of holomorphic vector bundles in the sense of Mumford-Takemoto and Hermitian-Einstein metrics in holomorphic vector bundles for canonically polarized framed manifolds, i.e. compact complex manifolds X together with a smooth divisor D such that K_X \otimes [D] is ample. It turns out that the degree of a torsion-free coherent sheaf on X with respect to the polarization K_X \otimes [D] coincides with the degree with respect to the complete Kähler-Einstein metric g_{X \setminus D} on X \setminus D. For stable holomorphic vector bundles, we prove the existence of a…
