In this paper, we give an estimate of sub-Laplacian of Riemannian distance functions in pseudo-Hermitian geometry which plays a similar role as Laplacian comparison theorem in Riemannian geometry, and deduce a prior horizontal gradient estimate of pseudo-harmonic maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to regular balls of Riemannian manifolds. As an application, Liouville theorem is established under the conditions of nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature and vanishing pseudo-Hermitian torsion. Moreover, we obtain the existence of pseudo-harmonic maps from complete noncompact pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to regular balls of Riemannian manifolds.
In this work, we first establish short time existence and Shi's type estimate of second Ricci flow on complete noncompact Hermitian manifolds. As an application, we use the second Ricci flow to discuss the existence of Kaehler-Einstein metric on complete noncompact Hermitian manifolds.
In this paper, we will give a horizontal gradient estimate of positive solutions of $Δ_b u = - λu$ on complete noncompact pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. As a consequence, we recapture the Liouville theorem of positive pseudo-harmonic functions on Sasakian manifolds with nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature.
Let $M=G/K$ be a Hermitian symmetric space of noncompact type. We provide a way of constructing $K$-equivariant embeddings from $M$ to its tangent space $T_oM$ at the origin by using the polarity of the $K$-action. As an application, we reconstruct the $K$-equivariant holomorphic embedding so called the Harish-Chandra realization and the $K$-equivariant symplectomorphism constructed by Di Scala-Loi and Roos under appropriate identifications of spaces. Moreover, we characterize the holomorphic/symplectic embedding of $M$ by means of the polarity of the $K$-action. Furthermore, we show a special…
We obtain upper estimates for the bottom (that is, greatest lower bound) of the essential spectrum of weighted Laplacian operator of a weighted manifold under assumptions of the volume growth of their geodesic balls and spheres. Furthermore, we find examples where the equality occurs in the estimates obtained. As a consequence, we give estimates for the weighted mean curvature of complete noncompact hypersurfaces into weighted manifolds.
Let (M,d) be a metric space. For 0<r<R, and p in M let G(p,r,R) be the group obtained by considering all loops based at p whose image is contained in the closed ball of radius r and identifying two loops if there is a homotopy betweeen them that is contained in the open ball of radius R. In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of the G(p,r,R) groups of complete open manifolds of nonnegative Ricci curvature. We also find relationships between the G(p,r,R) groups and tangent cones at infinity of a metric space and show that any tangent cone at infinity of a complete open manifold of nonne…
The Riemannian symmetric space SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) is both Hermitian symmetric and quaternionic Kahler symmetric. Let M be a hypersurface in SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) and denote by TM its tangent bundle. The complex structure of SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) determines a maximal complex subbundle C of TM, and the quaternionic structure of SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) determines a maximal quaternionic subbundle Q of TM. In this article we investigate hypersurfaces in SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) for which C and Q are closely related to the shape of M.
In this paper, by combining techniques from Ricci flow and algebraic geometry, we prove the following generalization of the classical uniformization theorem of Riemann surfaces. Given a complete noncompact complex two dimensional Kähler manifold $M$ of positive and bounded holomorphic bisectional curvature, suppose its geodesic balls have Euclidean volume growth and its scalar curvature decays to zero at infinity in the average sense, then $M$ is biholomorphic to $\C^2$. During the proof, we also discover an interesting gap phenomenon which says that a Kähler manifold as above automatically ha…
In this article, we provide some volume growth estimates for complete noncompact gradient Ricci solitons and quasi-Einstein manifolds similar to the classical results by Bishop, Calabi and Yau for complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. We prove a sharp volume growth estimate for complete noncompact gradient shrinking Ricci soliton. Moreover, we provide upper bound volume growth estimates for complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ=0.$ In addition, we prove that geodesic balls of complete noncompact quasi-Einstein manifolds with $λ<0$ and $μ\leq 0$ have at …
In this work, we obtain some existence results of Chern-Ricci Flows and the corresponding Potential Flows on complex manifolds with possibly incomplete initial data. We discuss the behaviour of the solution as $t\rightarrow 0$. These results can be viewed as generalization of an existence result by Giesen and Topping for surfaces of hyperbolic type of Ricci flow to higher dimensions in certain sense. On the other hand, we also discuss the long time behaviour of the solution and obtain some sufficient conditions for the existence of Kähler-Einstein metric on complete noncompact Hermitian manifo…
We find upper and lower bounds for the first eigenvalue and the volume entropy of a noncompact real analytic Kähler manifold, in terms of Calabi's diastasis function and diastatic entropy, which are sharp in the case of the complex hyperbolic space. As a corollary we obtain explicit lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the geodesic balls of an Hermitian symmetric space of noncompact type.
We show that the classical Szasz analytic function $S_N(f)(x)$ is obtained by applying the pseudo-differential operator $f(N^{-1}D_θ)$ to the Bergman kernels for the Bargmann-Fock space. The expression generalizes immediately to any smooth polarized noncompact complete toric \kahler manifold, defining the generalized Szasz analytic function $S_{h^N}(f)(x)$. About $S_{h^N}(f)(x)$, we prove that it admits complete asymptotics and there exists a universal scaling limit. % We also consider some dilation operator composed with $S_{h^N}(f)(x)$ and we give an estimate about this composition. As an ex…
We prove that there is no faithful finite-dimensional representation by skew-hermitian matrices of a ``basic algebra of observables'' B on a noncompact symplectic manifold M. Consequently there exists no finite-dimensional quantization of any Lie subalgebra of the Poisson algebra C^\infty(M) containing B.
For a Kahler metric, the Riemannian scalar curvature is equal to twice the Chern scalar curvature. The question we address here is whether this equivalence can hold for a non-Kahler Hermitian metric. For such metrics, if they exist, the Chern scalar curvature would have the same geometric meaning as the Riemannian scalar curvature. Recently, Liu-Yang showed that if this equivalence of scalar curvatures holds even in average over a compact Hermitian manifold, then the metric must in fact be Kahler. However, we prove that a certain class of noncompact complex manifolds do admit Hermitian metr…
In this paper, we study the topology of complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with asymptotically nonnegative Ricci curvature. We show that a complete noncompact manifold with asymptoticaly nonnegative Ricci curvature and sectional curvature decay at most quadratically is diffeomorphic to a Euclidean n-space R^n under some conditions on the density of rays starting from the base point p or on the volume growth of geodesic balls in M.
We study boundary value problems for the Dirac operator on Riemannian Spin$^c$ manifolds of bounded geometry and with noncompact boundary. This generalizes a part of the theory of boundary value problems by C. Bär and W. Ballmann for complete manifolds with closed boundary. As an application, we derive the lower bound of Hijazi-Montiel-Zhang, involving the mean curvature of the boundary, for the spectrum of the Dirac operator on the noncompact boundary of a Spin$^c$ manifold. The limiting case is then studied and examples are then given.
On non-Kähler manifolds the notion of harmonic maps is modified to that of Hermitian harmonic maps in order to be compatible with the complex structure. The resulting semilinear elliptic system is {\it not} in divergence form. The case of noncompact complete preimage and target manifolds is considered. We give conditions for existence and uniqueness of Hermitian-harmonic maps and solutions of the corresponding parabolic system, which observe the non-divergence form of the underlying equations. Numerous examples illustrate the theoretical results and the fundamental difference to harmonic maps.
Let $K\backslash G$ be an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space of noncompact type and $Γ\,\subset\, G$ a closed torsionfree discrete subgroup. Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $ρ\, :\, π_1(X, x_0)\,\longrightarrow\, Γ$ a homomorphism such that the adjoint action of $ρ(π_1(X, x_0))$ on $\text{Lie}(G)$ is completely reducible. A theorem of Corlette associates to $ρ$ a harmonic map $X\, \longrightarrow\, K\backslash G/Γ$. We give a criterion for this harmonic map to be holomorphic. We also give a criterion for it to be anti--holomorphic.
In this work, using the method by He, we prove a short time existence for Ricci flow on a complete noncompact Riemannian manifold with the following properties: (i) there is $r_0>0$ such that the volume of any geodesic balls of radius $r\le r_0$ is close to the volume of the geodesic ball in the Euclidean space with the same radius; (ii) the Ricci curvature is bounded below; (iii) the sectional curvature is bounded below by $-Cd^2(x,x_0)$ where $d(x,x_0)$ is the distance from a fixed point. An application to the uniformization for complete noncompact Kahler manifolds with nonnegative bisection…
By a theorem of Greene and Wu, a noncompact connected Riemannian manifold admits a smooth strictly subharmonic exhaustion function. Demailly provided an elementary proof of this fact. A further simplification of Demailly's proof and some (mostly known) applications are described. Applications include the fact that the holomorphic line bundle associated to a nontrivial effective divisor on a compact connected complex manifold admits a smooth Hermitian metric with positive scalar curvature.
For simple Lie groups, the only homogeneous manifolds $G/K$, where $K$ is maximal compact subgroup, for which the phase of the scalar product of two coherent state vectors is twice the symplectic area of a geodesic triangle are the hermitian symmetric spaces. An explicit calculation of the multiplicative factor on the complex Grassmann manifold and its noncompact dual is presented. It is shown that the multiplicative factor is identical with the two-cocycle considered by A. Guichardet and D. Wigner for simple Lie groups.
This work deals with relations between a bounded cohomological invariant and the geometry of Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. The invariant, obtained from the Kähler class, is used to define and characterize a special class of totally geodesic embeddings, called "tight embeddings". In addition, special isometric actions of finitely generated groups on Hermitian symmetric spaces are studied. Results of a joint work with M. Burger and A. Iozzi about surface group representations are also discussed.

We say that a Riemannian manifold M has rank at least k if every geodesic in M admits at least k parallel Jacobi fields. The Rank Rigidity Theorem of Ballmann and Burns-Spatzier, later generalized by Eberlein-Heber, states that a complete, irreducible, simply connected Riemannian manifold M of rank at least 2 (the higher rank assumption), whose isometry group satisfies the condition that the recurrent vectors are dense in the unit tangent bundle SM (the duality condition), is a symmetric space of noncompact type. This includes, for example, higher rank M which admit a finite volume quotient. W…
The paper is devoted to the study of Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and stability of irreversible metric-measure spaces, both in the compact and noncompact cases. While the compact setting is mostly similar to the reversible case developed by J. Lott, K.-T. Sturm and C. Villani, the noncompact case provides various surprising phenomena. Since the reversibility of noncompact irreversible spaces might be infinite, it is motivated to introduce a suitable nondecreasing function that bounds the reversibility of larger and larger balls. By this approach, we are able to prove satisfactory convergence/s…
In this paper, we study volume growth, Liouville theorem and the local gradient estimate for $f$-harmonic functions, and volume comparison property of unit balls in complete noncompact gradient Ricci shrinkers. We also study integral properties of f-harmonic functions and harmonic functions on such manifolds.
Let (M,g) be a compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary. This article is concerned with the set of scalar-flat metrics on M which are in the conformal class of g and have the boundary as a constant mean curvature hypersurface. We construct examples of metrics on the unit ball, in dimensions n>=25, for which this set is noncompact. These manifolds have umbilic boundary, but they are not conformally equivalent to the unit ball.
We solve the classical Dirichlet problem for a general complex Hessian equation on a small ball in $\bC^n$. Then, we show that there is a continuous solution, in pluripotential theory sense, to the Dirichlet problem on compact Hermitian manifolds with boundary that equipped locally conformal Kähler metrics, provided a subsolution.
Let $M$ be a connected complete noncompact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with a base point $p \in M$ whose radial sectional curvature at $p$ is bounded from below by that of a noncompact surface of revolution which admits a finite total curvature where $n \geq 2$. Note here that our radial curvatures can change signs wildly. We then show that $\lim_{t\to\infty} \mathrm{vol} B_t(p) / t^n$ exists where $\mathrm{vol} B_t(p)$ denotes the volume of the open metric ball $B_t(p)$ with center $p$ and radius $t$. Moreover we show that in addition if the limit above is positive, then $M$ has finit…
Using a flow first introduced by J.P. Anderson, we obtain some existence theorems for harmonic maps from a noncompact complete Riemannian manifold into a complete Riemannian manifold. In particular, we prove as a corollary a recent result of Hardt and Wolf stating that any quasisymmetric map of the sphere that is sufficiently close to the identity can be extended to a quasiconformal harmonic diffeomorphism of the hyperbolic ball. This version contains a much simpler proof than the first version.
We formulate and establish a generalization of Kollár's injectivity theorem for adjoint bundles twisted by suitable multiplier ideal sheaves. As applications, we generalize Kollár's torsion-freeness, Kollár's vanishing theorem, and a generic vanishing theorem for pseudo-effective line bundles. Our approach is not Hodge theoretic but analytic, which enables us to treat singular Hermitian metrics with nonalgebraic singularities. For the proof of the main injectivity theorem, we use $L^{2}$-harmonic forms on noncompact Kähler manifolds. For applications, we prove a Bertini-type theorem on the res…
Let $M_1$ and $M_2$ be two Kähler manifolds. We call $M_1$ and $M_2$ {\em relatives} if they share a non-trivial Kähler submanifold $S$, namely, if there exist two holomorphic and isometric immersions (Kähler immersions) $h_1: S\to M_1$ and $h_2: S\to M_2$. Moreover, two Kähler manifolds $M_1$ and $M_2$ are said to be {\em weakly relatives} if there exist two locally isometric (not necessarily holomorphic) Kähler manifolds $S_1$ and $S_2$ which admit two Kähler immersions into $M_1$ and $M_2$ respectively. The notions introduced are not equivalent. Our main results in this paper are Theorem 1.…
